    Outstanding vid! You are the Dynamic Duo of “reasonably priced” bourbons! Two things: (1) I’m going to give JB Choice a try......and (2) I will continue to enjoy 1783. Yep.....in last few years, I obviously enjoy Woodfords Reserve, Jefferson’s, Gentleman Jack, on and on. (I’m retired now....every night is Friday!). But surprisingly....those times I’ve sat out and listened to spring peepers with my dog, watched the Milky Way from a fresh mowed yard, backpacked parts of the Appalachian Trail, bikepacked to my favorite trout streams in NH and Maine, 1783 has been there - if for no other reason than for cost savings and ease in finding it - but flavor and sipping pleasure, too. Bravo-Zulu, you two! Job well done!!

      I completely agree. I drink EW Black label and it's under $10 a 750ml. Great mixer with diet coke and even better with A&W Diet rootbeer. 6 oz. root beer, 2 ounces EW on ice. Outstanding and the vanilla of the root beer and bourbon make a nice sweet taste.

    Super fun video! One thing I"d recommend when making another video like this (and maybe you've done this, as this is the first I've seen of yours), is to, in editing the video, put the name of the bourbon you're tasting on the screen. Thanks, Matt! OGD BIB is a good one! Yeah I was a little surprised it didn't make the cut in our 3rd flight, but blind flights can surprise you like that! Who's to say the results wouldn't be different if you did the same flight another day. In fact, we've been talking about doing the same blind flight 10 times or so to see how often the results stay the same! Drinking bourbon in the name of science, it's a hard life. Haha.

    I agree how you say Jim Beam is regarded as a low grade bourbon because people always think of the white label sometimes found in a plastic bottle but in my opinion after Knob Creek came out they saw the potential in the higher top shelfy type stuff and started playing around with new ideas and alot of people have not given the new era of Jim Beam products enough of a chance to see they are putting out quality product that can stand up to the rest of highly regarded bourbons on the market.

      I've been telling people for years that on an availability, cost and quality basis, plain old Jim Beam white label is hard to beat. Yes there are better out there but they cost more and very few things at that price point compare. It's just a damn good whisky. I like it neat and goes great with Coke as well.
      That being said, don't limit yourself to just that. There are some other damn fine and cheap bourbons out there, many of which were featured here. Buffalo Trace is another excellent choice. I'm also a fan of Bulleit.

      plus in certain flights there was a decent difference in alcohol content.. flight 2 contains 2 of my preferred bourbons, the Fighting Cock at 103 proof and Old Crow at 80 proof. %10 ABV can really take the breath out of novice drinker (not that either of these fine folks would qualify). Old Crow is also a sour mash so an entirely different beast all together. Great Video! Drink what you like people drink what you like!

    Keep your two top picks from the under $25 category and add them to a menu of under $35 bourbons, many of which get reviewed and compared to the top shelf stuff. My own preference, informally arrived at, is 1792, which I find has a very mellow texture combined with a neutral flavor (on the sweet < - > oak/dry) spectrum. Some critics liked that profile, some found it uninspiring. I'd like to see what a blind tasting competition reveals. Also, I think the under $35 price category will be more qualitatively useful.

    My cellar has some expensive bottles, some over $2K, but one thing you can always find in it there, is a bottle of Buffalo Trace, one of my all time favorites, and the best whiskey for the money ever.

    Cool video. I love trying cheaper bourbon and finding tasty ones under $25. Larceny and Henry McKenna BIB are my go-tos. How Ancient Age 80 and Jim Beam white made it that far is crazy to me but to each their own. Cheers.

    • @ItsBourbonNight
      @ItsBourbonNight  8 лет назад +1

      I would have said the same thing about AA 80 and Beam white before I did the blind flight! Also, I have to think if we did these flights over and over again, different ones might take the win from time to time. I think a little bit of it has to do with the order they are in, time of day, your mood, what you had for lunch, haha, so many variables!

      Made it on our own. Used a glass cutter to cut off the bottoms, sanded them, and did the wiring. Not too hard but very rewarding!

    Being a lover of Bourbon, but also on SS, I can't afford to splurge on expensive Bourbons. So it's Evan Williams black label, because in my local store, the 750 mil bottle is 13 bucks, and the larger bottle is 18 bucks, and it's just fine, is
    smooth as I like it

  • @bax323

    I prefer Wild Turkey of the ones they had but that's just me. Best bang for the buck is Old Crow, sure it isn't the best tasting bourbon but for less that 10 bucks who cares.

    Question: did you make any effort to dilute every whisky in a flight/fight to the same ABV?

    • @ItsBourbonNight
      @ItsBourbonNight  7 лет назад +2

      RabidMortal1 Thanks for the question! No, we didn't. One, we don't have the equipment to accurately measure the ABV, but for us, it really came down to wanting to compare these bourbons to each other the way the distillery is offering them. I can see where you are coming from and we could have added water to something like WT 101 to get it to exactly the same proof as Jim Beam White, but what average drinker is going to repeat that same process at home? We could have proofed everything down to 80, but we were more interested in seeing what characteristics came through in the higher proof bourbons and if that made it more enjoyable for us. There's a few barrel strength bourbons that I'll add a little water or a small ice cube to, but I always try it neat first. But anyway, thanks for your question and happy drinking!!

    Powering my way through a bottle of Evan Williams1783 right now, and not really enjoying it. Guess I've been spoiled in the past with all the Jefferson & Makers Mark that I've had, the 1783 was my first foray into "budget bourbon" - which really isn't worth the $10-15 you save from the mid-rangers. I will give both the Larceny, Jim Beam Choice, & Buffalo Trace a try though. Thanks for the vid!

      drivebybodypierce Thanks! The Jim Beam Choice has been discontinued, so you might have to hunt for that one if you really want to try it.

    New subscriber, informative videos. I like the blind taste testing idea, but it'd be much more informative for us as the viewers if a third party organized the bourbons for each of you in the same order. It'd be great to hear your two opinions on the same bourbon side by side. Also, it would be helpful if you described what you were tasting specifically in each bourbon vs I like or dislike them.
    I was pleased to see Wild Turkey 101 in the final 4, however, due to its much higher proof, it's unmistakable to confuse it with anything else in the final 4. It seems to me that WT 101 had a disadvantage vs the other 3 just for the higher alcohol burn it exhibits vs the others...WT 101 to me has a taste profile significantly superior to everything else it competed against.
    I'm a WT 101 fan can you tell? Best flavor profile, what I like in a bourbon, I've had so far, but looking to expand my horizons. Boone County Distillery's Eighteen 33 edges out WT 101 to me, but is more than double the price, minus the WT 101 burn which I like. I think both of these have a similar flavor profile don't you think?
    In your opinions, what bourbon or bourbons has the same flavor profile as WT101 and Eighteen 33 between the two price points, $20-$50?

    • @ItsBourbonNight
      @ItsBourbonNight  8 лет назад

      Jimmy Villella Thanks for the comments and for watching! We make each other's flights for 2 reasons. 1, we are a 2 person operation, no camera operators, no one behind the scenes, so logistically we have to make each other's instead of having a 3rd person do it for us. 2nd, we wanted to leave the power of suggestion out of it. If Sara says "I taste bananas in this" then I'm (Chad) more likely to say, "yeah me too!" That's why we make it random.
      As for WT 101 being at a disadvantage, that's just how the bracket worked out. I will say that we have been fooled by proofages before. A bad, low proof bourbon can taste much hotter than you think it should or a lovely barrel proof can taste as smooth as a 90 proof bourbon. The fact of the matter is that the under $25 category has more 80 to 90 proof bourbons and less 100s and above. Also, the fact that neither one of us are huge WT 101 drinkers (though I drink it a lot more now after that 1st episode) it was harder for us to pick out its distinctive taste in a blind flight of 4.
      Now, to your question about similar tastes to WT 101. This is tough for me. I poured a glass of 101 today and tried several other bourbons. WT has a distinct taste IMO. I haven't found anything yet that I would say is real, real close. If I had to suggest something, I would say try it next to Johnny Drum Private Stock. It's also a 101, but I picked it more so bc of its unique barrel taste. It has a lovely burn as well. Let me know what you think! I haven't tried the other bourbon you asked about. I'll have to give it a try soon. I hope this helped. Thanks!

    I haven't put in the research to the level you just did. I'll admit to being jealous and a little hurt I didn't get an invite. Buuuuuut. Henry McKenna is my go to bottom shelf pick right now. In Oregon it is $11.95. It comes across as light, sweet and there is nothing offensive about it. That last trait is a surprise for that price point.
