Astringent is a drying effect that can also have numbing associated with it. That being said, it is caused by wood/herb tannins or unripe fruits which are bitter/sour.
Unsweetened Tea, cranberries and Cabernet Sauvignon are what comes to mind for astringent mouthfeel.
I considered writing something about this, but honestly you killed it. Definitive and correct, while also relatable. Well done!
And isopropyl alcohol or witch hazel@@jswarner319
Green persimmons, black tea, pine needles, pomegranate.
It’s an effect of rapidly adding water to proof something down to fast also usually that’s what they are referring to
Having lived in Pikesville, MD for several years, I bought this for the nostalgia. It is now my favorite rye, with Rare Breed coming in second. Honestly, I was rooting for Pikesville the whole tasting. Well done! 👏👏
This comment isn't really specific to this video, but I didn't have a good place to put it. Just wanted to let you guys know, I really appreciate this channel alot. In a youtube bourbon world where I feel like alot of channels are very elitist and unwelcoming, you guys are truly the "everyman" channel. You create well produced, thought out, and considerate content while maintaining the feeling that I am sitting in the room having a conversation with friends on the same journey as I am. I love your personalities and I hope you guys keep doing what you're doing, the way you're doing it, for a long time. I honestly feel good watching your videos. Thank you.

Rare Breed Rye is WONDERFUL. That and Pikesville are my two go-to’s. Love them both. Great selection.
Hey gentlemen, thanks for this video! Here’s another request to put bottle information in the description of each of your videos! We don’t need all the info, just the important basic stuff (year, distillery, model, batch). Thanks!
Hey guys, I’m a big fan, luv your videos…they are insightful and informative…just fyi Peter Fasciano of Whiskey is a Journey has a specific video titled Sip it or Skip it…
How about “Try or let it fly”? Thanks for your content! Best, Joe
I first heard of Pikeville on the Bourbon Judge a few weeks back. In a moment of serendipity a day later, a store near me stocked it. Loved it. I am a fan of Old Forrester Rye as well, but the prices just shot up significantly.
Can’t beat the WT 101 Rye as a bargain sip. Thanks, gents. Another great show!
I was looking for a comment that mentioned Wild Turkey I'll pick up a bottle. I seen it the other day at the liquor store $23.99..
I am a newbie maybe 2 months into my journey. Didn't know I liked Rye until I had Bear Wallow straight rye, whiskey, bottled in bond. Nashville Indiana 3 miles down the road from Hard Truth. Hard Truth has some great stuff to.
The WT101 is the only one of these I've tried (and love it). I clearly have some work to do! Pikesville is $55 here, and I "think" it's actually available here. That may be my next rye buy.
THANK YOU for putting the name on the screen - and leaving it through the taste. Pikesville in Phoenix is $70. :-(
The RUclips channel “Whiskey is a Journey” has an ongoing segment called “Sip it or Skip It”
Great show guys I really enjoyed it. I am new to whiskeys so I have never had a rye whiskey. You guys have given me some advice as to which to start with but today the bottle s you suggested did not fair very well LOL. But looking forward to my trip to the Liquor store this weekend. Thank for the information you gentlemen provide.
I really like your videos. They are very honest and real. Any whisky drinker will gleen knowledge from your insights and descriptions. Thanks fellas.
Have you guys tried Russell's Single Barrel Rye? It's super good IMO.
I never agree with any of your placements on anything you have ever reviewed but I do enjoy the banter between y'all on why you chose what you did and I can agree with that. My flavor profile is so far off what you enjoy it's crazy but I do enjoy the banter. Keep up the good work!
I like Pikesville Rye too but it's a "barely legal" rye and my palate definitely leans toward the earthy/grassy in the WT101 Rye.. So that probably would have been my #1 in this lineup but I say probably because I haven't had that maple rye or even the OF 100. This was awesome though...beautiful piano outro as well. Goes well with my OGD nightcap here.
Nicely done all around. And, Trenton calling the bottle for 1st place was super impressive 👊
I was so hoping first place was Pikesville 🙌 when Trent was guessing. My favorite rye, I buy it whenever I see it, finishing one bottle and have another bunkered, not around here often great for $50
I bought the Pikesville a while back when you said to go get it, and i love it. Not surprised it was your #1.
I had that Pikesville at Heaven Hill this week and really enjoyed it, call me crazy but I got like a sweet potato pie on it
Turkey 101 rye is my budget rye hitter. Always available and often slept on as far as taste
Sip it or Skip it is a great title, and is very fitting....but there is another channel using this for one of their regular video series...."Whiskey Is A Journey"...not that they have a trademark on that, but just happened to watch one and it was fresh on my mind. Just trowing that out, I think it's fine you both use it, but wanted to mention.
Love your channel, always great content.
I am a big rye guy. It's interesting that you did this and I have been tasting through my ryes in the last few nights to find my top 5 for a tasting with friends. So far my top 5 are Nashville Barrel Co. (store pick) Old Ezra 7 year, Rare Character (ADHD pick), Rossville Union (MGP) and Knob Creek (It's Bourbon Night pick) The Knob creek is #1 so far. with the first 3 all a close second. Rye's are often much more complex than bourbons. I get a lot of different flavors and they change a lot in as they set. (nose and palate) Cheers.
¿ New Riff Ryes?
@@paleggett1897 I have a 113.3 proof New Riff Rye but I haven't got to it yet.
@@paleggett1897 I have one. It might take me a while though. I have 89 bottles. Some are duplicates but I would guess probably 70 different ones.
I have only had WT101. Almost a daily pour but with a couple cubes. Interesting video.
Man, I love the Old Forester 100 rye.
I'm usually more of a bourbon guy but I have been drinking ryes a little more recently. Appreciating the reviews.
PS impressive picking the first place bottle.
I was wondering why Knob Creek Rye is rarely featured? They have a recent new 7 year age statement bottle. Would appreciate a review. 😊
"...with Trenton and me." You fixed it! 🎉
There is another channel that does a sip it or skip it ... not that it matters ... lol
Was just about to comment this lol
Peter from Whiskey is a Journey has been doing Sip it or Skip for a while.
Bulliet 95 is my rye everyday all day but interested in trying pikesville and seeing how it stands up.
Pikesville is my go-to neat pour and 101 rye is my go-to mixer - makes a great old fashioned.
Pikesville is hard to find in my area (actually never seen it in my state but I live on a border and I usually find it across the river). Clearly I enjoy it - it was the first bottle I actually killed off. I havent' replaced it specifically so I drink something else. It's a great proof point and it's an easy mashbill.
Always love the videos guys! Right now I am loving jack Daniel’s bonded rye. Makes me look forward to trying new rye
I've been tempted to buy Pikesville for months now, and it sits on shelves out here for about $40 so I think I shall go out and get one haha. I'm still new to rye, only ever had Old Forester rye which is pretty good.
Heck yes. I was hoping for a Pikesville win as soon as I saw it was on the table. Such a phenomenal rye.
Stopped by Heaven Hill last week to do a little tasting....the Pikeville Rye was such a great stand-out flavor!
Fun, indeed. Pikesville doesn’t seem to be available where I am in SW Florida. I’m a big fan of Old Forester (BTW, 65% rye) and WT 101 and Rare Breed ryes.
Thanks for all the videos love them. They really help me in my choices. Question… how much do you spend in a year on bourbon
Great show. Getting more into rye so going to check a few of these out.
I've tried enough ryes to know I'd rather drink scotch. But the Pikesville and WT101 are very quintessential and on my short list for favorite ryes.
i love rye and WT101 bourbon, but not a big fan of WT101 rye myself. Willett is my favorite rye so far.
Had half a bottle of Johnnie Walker high rye yesterday. Drinking some wild turkey 101 and Angels Envy Finnish Rye along with the show!
I have been told and heard that with bourbon once the liquid gets very near the bottom one should just go ahead and finish it off cuz the taste usually tends to go negatively off. Not saying that it is poo just that the flavor will be off.
I was amazed he guessed the #1. I love Pikesville too, but I wouldn't be able to pick it out of a lineup of ryes or bourbons. It’s just generally delicious, with nothing specific that stands out.
The channel I like for sip it or skip it is called Whiskey is a Journey
Another great blind and this one was especially fun. I have not been able to find a Pikeville here in Columbus yet but I do really want to try it. I always have WT 101 rye or the OF rye on hand and like to use them in an Old Fashioned. Very enjoyable video!
Pikesville is excellent, a good old style Maryland rye.
Look for Sagamore Bottled in Bond rye. Very good.
I’ve been on a rye kick lately. Saz has been my favorite, but the Angels Envy Rum finished I had a sample of was really good. I have an Old Overholt and a Jim Beam single barrel I still need to crack and try
In my own blind tastings, Alberta premium Rye has always beaten Pikesville. I would be interested to see how that one ranks for you guys. Put that one in the blind with willet and pikesville
As Ed Sullivan would have said, "It's a really big show!". Great job, as always, SLB!
Trenton giving off serious Charlie Kelly vibes questioning whether hornets make honey 😂
There is a whiskey tuber already using sip it or skip it
We tried the Pikesville at the Heaven Hill tour. Liked it enough to buy it!!
U guys are so funny together. Lifts me up every time
Pikesville is a GREAT rye and a worthy winner. The price is ALL OVER THE PLACE in my area: I have seen it for under $40 all the way up to almost $80.
I have been looking for the pikesville for ever can’t find it anywhere!
I hust bought a pikesville yesterday. Its awesome!
I would love to know you guys opinion on mastersons 10 year rye. I searched and didn’t see a video from you guys on it.
Don’t know if anyone has mentioned it, but “Sip it or Skip it” is a feature used by “Whiskey is a Journey” RUclipsr.
You guys are always fun to watch. Keep it up 👍
Love Pikesville and OF 100 rye. I get grape soda on both. I’m ashamed to say I have never tried WT 101 rye. The WT 101 bourbon is one of my daily drinkers. Off topic, are there SLB T-shirts for sale? All I see are long sleeves and hoodies. 🥃
I would love to have seen Rare Breed Rye instead of WT101. Love it.
I hadn't had Hard Truth until last weekend, and I tried their sweet mash Harvest Rye and it was pretty dang good for a rye.
Been following for a good while and love it, what careers to yall have? Thanks
Appreciate the content fellas.
Yep Pikesville is delicious. Strangely I detect scotch notes in it, but lovely depth and on the sweet side.
Well done fellas! I would love to see Trenton try Rarebreed rye for the first time!
I love the Bardstown Orgien Rye, but my favorite is the Pursuit United single barrel ryes, super rich flavors
I'm just happy to know sip it or skip it win!! I love rye whiskies! Let's go!!
Great episode on the Rye's, and also a local one in my state of Ohio.
I love your rye battles. But... may it be you never had the Knob Creek Rye on a show? Think it has fantastic value.
Trent, what would you say is your favorite rye, period? I am just getting into rye and am really liking it, but so far for me, nothing can touch your Sagamore pick from earlier this year.
I was surprised that you didn’t include WT Rare Breed Rye.
I can’t believe Trent hasn’t had WT rare breed when he loves ryes so much! WT RB is soo good!
Agreed: Pikesville is a phenomenal rye. Definitely one of my favorite whiskeys across all categories. Rittenhouse is another great rye from Heaven Hill that’s $28 in my area.
pikesville in Seattle is $47 plus all our taxes! in limited supply
Hayner distillery is here in my hometown of Troy, Ohio. Theirs a lot of history that goes with the name.
Great job, Trent! Cheers! 🥃
Old Forester rye is perfect for my Manhattan
Redwood Empire Emerald Giant CS is a four grain rye. There are a few more out there now.
GREAT blind! 🎉 Would have loved to also see my favorite budget rye (also from Heaven Hill) - Rittenhouse - included 😊
Pikesville here in Houston for $41
I hope to find me a Pikesville Rye soon.
$42 for Pikesville!!!!! MSRP 😢is $55 + tax in State ran abc sales. Does that change your recommendation on that price range?
Woodinville Whiskey finishes a maple syrup in their whiskey barrels. It’s really good maple syrup but pricey.
No switching after the first reveal is on the bar top. That defeats the purpose of the blind lmao 😅
Can you two please do this again with higher percentage rye in the mash. Thanks
Yall going crazy with the commercials. Still love yall though
WT 101 rye 19-20 here in Texas..Hard to beat!
“Leaf particulate” lol very descriptive!
Should have called this the McConaughey blind….
All rye all rye all rye
I have an old empty Hayner whiskey bottle from 1897!
I do not believe you can get Pikesville for 43. I bought one 2 years ago and it was 55. Haven't seen one since.
Pikesville is allocated in my area, can't find it. Wish I could.
Pikesville is excellent rye, one of the best in it's price range ($50+ in Wisconsin). Rare Breed Rye is another favorite in the same price range.
A blind taste would be challenging, because you automatically show preference based on label recognition. I do like pikeville rye as it drinks more oaky. barrel aged
I just tasted the sweet mash rye of Hard Truth and it was delicious!
today I'm drinking Sazerac rye it is very good today
