Best Rye Whiskey 101 Proof & Above (Blind Flight Fight)

- Chad and Sara blind taste four rye whiskeys to see which ones stack up and which fall short in this 101 proof and above battle! We're looking for the best affordable rye, so that means we won't be testing ryes from the BTAC collection or Whistle Pig's Black Prince or whatever.

Don't sweat an "Oh Shit!" moment once in a while, it's refreshing how honest you guys are. What are we on, Network Television? Keep up the fun!
its ok sara i was not fond of black liceroise i will admitt i dont mind the red licorious
You guys are spot on about that Pikesville 110. I'm not much of a rye fan, but that stuff is fantastic.
i was trying bourbons and scotches if i try a rye i would rather try a sample and if its not worthy of a fith lol why waste your money
Great review! Glad I bought pikesville! Love seeing u do rye reviews! Recently got into ryes myself. Haven’t had a scotch yet but that day may be coming. Can’t wait for the live streams!!! 🥃👍
Thanks so much guys, your videos are Always informative.👍
I just found my 1st liter of 101 rye after a year of keeping my eye out for it. My birthday is next week. That's when I'm gonna crack it open. I like Pikesville but prefer Rittenhouse bib. That is my go to rye. Inexpensive and tasty. I paid $49 +tx for the 101 in SoCal.
Yowza Yowza Yowza Thank you for the coherent A/A, B/B comparison format. I like that and the fact you listed the brands for us viewers during the commentary. Here's to years of happy drinking.
[Name the movie "Yowza, Yowza, Yowza" is from (hint: man in white dinner jacket)].
PalJoey1957 Hummm I think you got me stumped on that one!
The quotation is from the ultimate expression on film of existential nihilism, 1969's "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Starring Jane Fonda, Gig Young (Academy Award), Michael Sarazin, Susannah York, Bonnie Bedelia, Bruce Dern, and very strong supporting characters and directed by Sydney Pollack. It is the Depression Era in the 1930s. People are out of work, out of food, and out in the street with nowhere to go.
They seek shelter by entering a dance marathon contest. Couples dance before an audience until they either drop or win a cash prize. The depression and hopelessness are as omnipresent as are the contestants foolish hopes. And of course everyone, as you might expect, is getting f___ed with every breath.
Holding my head in my hands in horror, I simply could not believe the descent of human behavior. And the closing scene? A magnificent shot of a spot lit, white jacketed Gig Young as the marathon host, standing before the assembled contestants and onlookers:
"Yowza, Yowza, Yowza!
Here they are again,
those wonderful, wonderful kids,
still struggling, still hoping.
As the Clock of Fate ticks away,
the Dance of Destiny continues.
The marathon goes on, and on, and on.
How long ... can they last?
Let's hear it. C'mon, c'mon. Let's hear it. Let's hear it."
Exit theater, feeling empty, nearly shaking, glancing at other patrons for reactions. Can I possibly recommend a movie more strongly. See it, at least, on a large screen TV.
PalJoey1957 Thanks! We'll have to check it out!
I am with you guys on the Willett--I was so disappointed with it when I got it. I have even given it time since I've opened the bottle and still find it undrinkable. I am curious how Whistle Pig would stack up against Pikesville. I still prefer Pikesville AND it is cheaper.
Love the “further testing is required “ with a straight face line....😀
How is this not better than television?
newmennium Right?? Haha :) Thank ya.
Awesome 😎 I new Pikesville would win!!! , still a close one with Knob Creek have to wait and see.......great job as always 😊
Great flight guys going to pick up a Pikesville.
Nice one, well done. I was more surprised by what I didn't see namely Sazerac, Michter, high west, and Russel... well you could use another winner for a full flight of winners.
Hey, guys,
Buffalo Trace should put out an every day rye under the BT label - just sayin...
What kind of glasses are those that the two of you used? I would love to get my hands on a set
It was very nice that you both got the same whiskies at the same time... That's always been confusing to me trying to get tasting notes from the videos when you're talking about different ones simultaneously. I understand why you do it the way you do -- trying to reduce the "power of suggestion"... But maybe you both have a good enough palate at this point that you could dispense with that and taste the same whiskey together? "For the people..."
Ed Butler Hummm, perhaps. We're both highly suggestible. :)
Poor Sara, had to do that one rye back to back. I feel for you.
Another great blind flight as always. We all knew you were going to pick the Pikesville!
Blind Whiskey Reviews Thanks! Yeah this one was pretty obvious I guess hahah.
I must like intense flavors, because I like Willett, but it’s actually a bit tame for me. Whatever it’s got, I want more.I might like the Pepper even more. I already love Pikesville for it’s rye-like bourbon flavor, but it doesn’t have as much spice as I like.
Hey guys..... Nice Rye review! I agree with Sara - Scotch makes me make funny faces too, as much as I have given it a fair shake many times - finally decided to just stay with Bourbon :) Have been experimenting with Rye lately, but still a loyal fan of Bourbon and Jack Single Barrel Select. I just received the over priced Norlan Glasses and have only tried them once, but did not notice much of a difference. I am going to give them another shot in a few minutes - this time with some Woodford's reserve Double Oaked.
Bobby W Yeah it really depends on what bourbon you're using in the Norlan. It's fun to pour the same thing into a rocks glass and the Norlan and give it a smell and taste.
Im not sure weather i should go for the WT 101 rye or the knob creek rye. They are both the same price in my country. I have only tried Jim beam and bulleit before, loved the JB and hated the bulleit.
Bulleit is going to be a high rye percentage rye, while the Jim Beam is more around a barley legal rye (51% rye or there’s about). Turkey rye is liter so there’s always that plus for it and it’s also a barely level rye.
BTW My favorite proof (in most that is) is between 90 and 95. Anything much over that is less taste and more burn. Just a personal thing I suppose..... I will credit you for getting me started drinking Bourbons neat. :) Use to just automatically throw in ice.
Bobby W Awesome!
I'm enjoying the James E. Pepper 1776 right now. Sadly the 100 proof, but am wanting to get the barre proof real soon.
Ok, Ok, I'll go out and pick up the Pikesville! :) Good job!
I seen the Pikesville rye the other day but grabbed the Knob Creek rye instead since I already know I like it; do y'all believe the Pikesville is as good or better ?
ArkansasBadBoy As of right now I believe so, but we haven't done our final blind flight yet! We'll know soon.
It's Bourbon Night No worries, thanks for the delightful reviews
I've had both and prefer Pikesville but opinions really are that common
You guys should revisit Willet rye, but the 4 year. It's now Willet distilled, not MGP and Sarah may have a better reaction lol...
Glad to see the Pikesville held up. I've tried the Michter's, Rittenhouse, Turkey, Russell's Reserve, and Kentucky Owl. I still find Rittenhouse most drinkable, though I will say that the Kentucky Owl Rye is the most interesting.
Any thoughts on the Owl rye?
Ben Stafford We've been sent a sample. Gotta get around to trying it!
Haha Short Circuit reference! Classic
Bridges Cutlery Great job!! Wasn't sure if anyone was going to get that one. :)
Great review you two. Chad "Lay off me im starving?" is. a reference from a SNL skit with Chris Farley.
Love the little outtakes.
Emergency rye interrupt! AD Laws. Unanimously well reviewed, affordable, handsome bottle, I now don't see much reference to it. Can you throw it in as an add-on to the rye finals? I have a bottle I simply can't drink until I hear from you.
PalJoey1957 Haven't seen this one in our area before. Not sure if we can get it, but would love to try it.
He peeps, nice video!
I really like the fact that you 2 had the same whisky's at the same time, its a little less caotic this way
So what are your thoughts on Bulleit Rye? Its a 95% rye mashbill.
Give our 80-90 proof Rye Flight Fight a view to find out ;)
I see what you did there. Just my taste profile but I tend to judge other ryes using Bulleit as a baseline, given its price and profile. I enjoy the dill/spearmint combination.
I believe Sara's nose turned red when smelling the James E Pepper. That's spicy!
Love you two playing off each other. Great review.
Not sure how you got a medicinal flavor to the Willett 3yr. Oh well, to each their own.
If I could suggest trying the Willett 3yr in an Old Fashioned. It might change your mind.
elkhead01 Yeah, for sure, I love old fashioned so we'll try the Willett in one!
Just bought pikesville rye it is fantastic whiskey but a bit expensive at £75.
I like when they are reviewing the same whiskey at the same time....never understood the mixed up reviews
I love the Super Troopers reference
I like the Willett. I'm a licorice fan and mix my Manhattans with it
willett 4 year , neck in neck with pikesville .
Can't wait for the hula hoop competition! My money is on Chad. 😀
I thought you guys had the same order in another fight once before? I agree with Sarah, not a fan of the Willett 3 year (at least the bottle I have)
Kyle Ragsdale Maybe, but I think it's the first. There have been times where are results were in the same order though.
It wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong, haha
You know I enjoy your videos. I'm happily married but I have to say that Sara is very knowledgeable
Glad to see some rye shoot outs!! \m/
PS: The Larceny is REALLY growing on me big time! Can't beat it for under $25!!
"MMmmm, these fries are good, can I have some?"
p3r1h4ck3r Right you are!
I love turkey and living in Japan I can get 101 8 year for $21 so yea all about the turkey !🥃
Kevin Walsh That's awesome! Send us some? Ok, thanks!
You guys should put out an outtakes vid!
I love willett, but that 3yr is hot trash. I bought a bottle because it came with a neat little willett bottle sweater, but that thing is going to collect some dust on my bar. Sara's face was accurate lol.
Have you thought of losing the background music? It’s kind of irritating
Ok, Pikesville Rye @ $57 or Wild Turkey Rye @ $24…. Sorry, that’s not a challenging choice for me. I agree with Chad on this one. Pikesville and WT are neck and neck but the Pikesville is THREE TIMES more expensive than WT Rye. So unless I hit the lottery, it’s Wild Turkey 101 Rye every time.
hope you have michter's toasted barrel rye in the ultimate edition :D
When is the review of Cleveland Underground coming?
Holcombi Guess we'll have to get a bottle first. Haven't seen it in our area.
Balcones cast strength rye. That is where it is at
GREAT JOB !!!!!
WhiskyJason Thanks, Jason!
Need to up my Rye game.
if this videogets `00 likes chad should do a hoolahoop live on the channel. I would still see to pay this
shenlun Hahaha you got it
LOL @7:56 Also Sara, how many times a day are you told you look like Allison Brie?
MrDasNiche You make the 3rd or 4th person to say so, I think :)
Pikesville!!!!!!
How do you become a whiskey reviewer?? Is that your main job guys?
Andre Vidal Kaufman We just started reviewing whiskey and putting the videos up. If you're consistent, people will start watching. But no, this isn't our main job. Maybe one day.
Thanks for the reply! You two do an excellent job! I've been curious about a new 10 year bourbon from NY state called Widow Jane. I'd love to see y'all do a review of that if you can get a hold of a bottle, its supposed to be really good. I haven't seen any of the major reviewers taste that one. They make a rye as well. Thinking of going for a tour of their distillery here in NYC. Peace!
I've seen Widow Jane and believe I've had a sample of it before, but I think the price has kept me from buying a bottle so far. I don't know about NY, but here it's close to $100. Would love to eventually review it though.
That's understandable, their 10 year costs about $80 here in NYC (surprisingly cheaper, i guess because they are NY based). Their rye runs for about 45-50 bucks though if you could find one of those! Cheers!
Andre Vidal Kaufman Would love to try the rye!
super troopers
speed rakk Boom!
favorite bourbons vs favorite rye whiskeys blind flight fight?
That sounds like a fun idea!
Love your shows, but this “drink different things” doesn’t work for me. I’d much rather it was the same whiskey even if there’s bias
The bottles were in the same order as well... HMMM
Randy O'Connor Same order as what?
It's Bourbon Night the bottles on the shelf were the same order as your flights.
Randy O'Connor Ohh going right to left, haha yeah, I see. Well, no conspiracy here, we make the flights off set and then carry the bottles over. I think they were in a different order on the table where we made them ;)
It's Bourbon Night lol,. I wasn't trying to say it was a anything more than a coincidence. BTW, I agree, Pikesville is by far the best of the flight
Randy O'Connor hahhaa oh I know. Yes, Pikesville is awesome! You have good taste ;)
No Old Gran- dad ?
liter of cola is from super troopers, not obscure if you love comedy. Lay off man I'm starving is a Chris farley Saturday night live skit
hey i don't know why you guys are doing whiskey all of a sudden but i subscribed for the hula hoop content so if you wouldn't mind catering to your *original audience*??
Air hoola hoop
First again?
Homer Simpson First again, Homer. No "d'oh!" for you!
100th comment...lol....
shut up farva!!!!
James Dellinger :)
Don't fear the high rye!!! It's the young age that's throwing you for a loop on this flight for sure.
