    Seems to me that the forge work isn’t really needed you mostly cut with band saw and grinding profile and bevels? Knives look great

    8:56 what is this here that you are doing?

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  2 года назад +3

      I am putting the knives into a container full of hardwood ash, this allows them to cool down extremely slow which anneals the steel and makes grinding and drilling it easier. A clay based cat litter or floor dry works well also. I appreciate you watching.

    How did you drill through the hardened blade tang ? Thanks

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  2 года назад +2

      I used a hand torch to soften the tang, I just clamp it in the vice where the shoulders of the ricasso are so the heat don't transfer into the blade portion and ruin the temper. After doing that and letting it cool its nice and soft. I appreciate you watching!

    Im sorry sir but i wanna ask. Why forge the steel when u going to cut it later? Why dont u just cut it right away? I thought by forging the steel is for not wasting the steel by cutting it🤔 im not judging im just curious

      No problem. When it comes to knife making/forging there will always be an element of stock removal involved, be it from grinding or cutting. On this particular project the stock was a little too narrow for what I had planned and it was all that I had on hand so I forged it a little to get the dimensions I needed. There are some projects here on my channel where I will forge something to shape and others where I just may forge the blade and then cut or grind the tang to the desired size. It really just boils down to stock size and personal preference. As I have gotten older and the wear and tear on my body has began to catch up to me I find myself more and more doing stock removal because it is less labor intensive but I still enjoy forging. I appreciate you watching.
