  • “Horizon: An American Saga-Chapter 1” is an epic Western that fills the movie screen for three hours, and Jason Whitlock sat through the entire film. That may be the greatest endorsement of a movie ever. Whitlock makes his case for why every American should see the latest work by Kevin Costner.

It's one of the most misunderstood and misguided periods of the America story. The truth that NO one likes to talk about is that ALL the "native" DNA comes from ASIA and that there is proof there was ANOTHER civilization here, PRIOR to their arrival and eventual conquest of that people. The 'native' tribes were a VERY divided bunch, many tribes were embroiled in LONG standing, VERY bitter rivalries. Elders told stories about other tribes and their barbarity over and over, many of them killed on sight members of other tribes, the hate was that deep.
The Spanish were met with thousands of people that were desperate for them to get rid of the human sacrifice cults (Maya, Inca, Aztec) that were murdering them in the name of their demon 'gods'. In truth, the 'native' blood lines are still here and in great numbers, from South America to the North Pole. The myth that they were some sort of 'nature elves', skipping though the forest in harmony with all things is a lie, the entire continent had just suffered a major famine before the arrival or Anglo's. There was also an ongoing plague that was ravaging tribes...this was NOT 'brought by the white man', it was the result of starvation and nutrient deprivation.

2LT Gephardt should not have had a Bar in 1862. Also, it was early for so many cartridge conversion pistols and Henry Rifles in 1862.
The Apache had a material culture not much different that this is 1862. Hell, I was up in Apacharia in 1989 on a Staff Ride at the MI School and they don't have much more now. {Except that they are free,, not on a Reservation and are left alone by the US Army.)

Shemeka, please travel to Montana, you'll be able to see Costner's vision. Just returned from Big Sky, and not that I'm a world traveler, I'm not, but that was sheer beauty. I was raised in the city, and fought this vacation, but I fell in love with the state. Onto the movie, I saw it when it was first released, and if you go, please note, you'll have to invest to see this series through. I understand, and have read the reviews, and certainly can see what the journalists are saying that appears negative. Again, if you go, please go not expecting it to wrap up in 3 hours, it doesn't, it keeps going, and that's why I trust 2, 3, & 4 deliver the goods. I'm really hoping for that, so we'll see. In terms of the racism, did you catch the Chinese towards the end of Chapter 1, and how they were treated, Shemeka did. I do agree, the film is a throw back to "1883," you had to be hard to survive.

Jason, I think every man has a deep desire to test himself and see how far he can make it. It is that biblical mandate to want to exercise dominion over God’s world. I just got back from the Alaskan wilderness for a week. Your guest is right. You will see how soft we have all become very quickly. You can’t be out of shape. You have to know what to do. It is not comfortable. Most people wouldn’t make it very long.

I loved horizon and thought it was a great film. My only pushback is that I thought the movie was centered around Kevin Costner's character and not multiple stories. Jason's analysis of the film is really mundane because it's rooted in republican talking points. I wouldn't expect a movie like "Horizon" to appeal to women like Shemeka. We can't over look the distinct differences between the feminine and the masculine. History and hard core actions films don't appeal to the feminine and that's ok.
