  • Same old tricks, Ricks killing Ricks. This episode was intense, yo! Not only was there a mega lore dump about Evil Morty’s origins and perspectives within the first thirty seconds of the episode, Rick Prime’s storyline is pretty much wrapped. I’m not gonna lie - I didn’t think Prime could be explained, expanded on, AND annihilated in 23 minutes, but the boys at Rick and Morty have done it again! We have a bonkers amount of easter eggs, details, speculation, and character analysis to do - you’re watching WhitneyVision, and this is our breakdown of Unmortricken.

EM said it, using a weapon like that doesn't get you ignored. It's really hard to take out a chain of people such that no one cares about anyone that you killed. And even if you can do something on that scale the sheer power of it will get noticed and be seen as a threat.
EM is smart to keep it as an unrealized threat.
Though I think you're still on to something about EM enjoying an adventure with people who actually showed some respect.

I can't believe people haven't noticed that rick is literally subtly training morty to be just as smart and capable as Evil Morty is. Morty has literally been forced on more than one occasion to show his own smarts and ingenuity in fights, and planning out how to do just about anything. He disarms drunkenly improvised neutrino bombs on the regular because of how drunk rick gets all the time. Bombs which even the guardians rip offs were worried about and even surprised at how well Morty is able to figure out and disarm. Plus with the look of confusion they all had during ricks black out session it's obvious that they had no idea how to counter rick and were kinda worried about how morty know how to answer all of ricks traps.
I never see people talking about how Morty through all the seasons of the show has subtly gone from not understanding anything about rick or any of his devices to literally building, using and fixing them all on his own. People speculate and like to think morty becomes rick and i feel that isn't true. Rick trains morty not to be another rick but to be even better than him. Sort of like a legacy to pass on.

I don't think Morty even knows algebra considering how often he's out of school. He's equivalent to an ipad kid in intelligence but he's definitely gained some street smarts

I don't think you can "train" someone to be Einstein or Steve Jobs or Elon Musk. They are born that way then they maximize that born with brilliance. So, our Morty is smart, but like there is only one Rick C137, one Einstein, there is only one "Evil" Morty.

The reason there are tons of different portal inventors is because Evil Morty is outside the CFC. That means Universes where someone besides Rick is the smartest person in the universe exist and portal between each other. So someone who is as smart as C-137 or Rick Prime exists as the person who invents multiverse travel via portals. And apparently a ton of them get really unlucky with their first portaling.

    • @ZeroXMarquis

An infinite amount of them would get unlucky. However, for every Jetson-like family that gets unlucky, there are (smaller) infinite amounts that get it right, and (smaller) infinite amounts that set up their own CFC. Ah, the power and scope of infinity.

This was an amazing analysis. I got emotional at the end due to you pointing out how the only reason our Rick succeeded is because he clearly loves Morty despite what he says, and showed evil Morty a genuine amount of respect.

I don’t really understand the hang up with Rick choosing to kill Rick Prime over stopping Evil Morty from taking the plans.
Rick didn’t care that Evil Morty had the plans. Everything we’ve seen is that Evil Morty just wants to be left alone. The idea that Evil Morty might use the device to kill all Rick’s is reasonable, but I don’t think Rick would have stopped him; especially not after he was instrumental in finding and defeating Rick Prime AND saving his life so that he could finally get his revenge. Why revive Rick just to immediately kill him?
Worst case is that he might kill the rest of his family (except possibly Morty, since that could kill himself). But there’s no indication that he intended to do that. I’m pretty sure we haven’t seen Evil Morty kill anyone that wasn’t a Rick, a Morty or a Crystal alien monster.

WOW... Whitney... I love Rick and Morty and I watch a few of the other R&M reaction channels, but your analyses are WAY WAY more thoughtful and thought-provoking than any other ones I've watched yet ! Your channel should be BLOWIN' UP, BABE ! You hit all the callbacks they do plus a couple more regularly but your insights into the motivations of Rick and Evil Morty in this episode are really perceptive and well reasoned. Like your brilliant observation on what makes Rick the most Rick isn't that he's the most loner, or the most violent, but that he has the most genuine Rick / family balance... The show is "Rick and Morty" after all, not "Rick's Adventures Through the Multiverse" or something like that.
I'm really glad I looked you up after a couple of years and found this channel !

I think Evil Morty is definitely warming up to them, gradually realizing over time that this Rick isn't so bad, wanting to go on adventures with them like Whitney mentioned, but I feel there could be even more hidden meaning to his lines about "vengeful Summers" than an excuse... What if part of him actually fears the idea of a Summer who might possibly be capable of beating him - more so than a vengeful one? Like a Genius Summer or an Evil Summer who's a "smart bitch" instead of a dumb one, taking after Rick more.
If a particularly intelligent Vengeful Summer has her Wolverine claws with her, she might be able to sever Evil Morty's Iron Spider arms with the adamantinite. Maybe there's already a vengeful Evil Summer out there somewhere that Evil Morty secretly fears, and it's HER he could use their help with later when he says they might be useful to him at the end. So not only is he starting to like them more, but he's also realizing that with their help, he'll be able to take down greater threats he can't face alone. Almost like seeing how well they work together and how alone Rick Prime was might have caused Morty to start reflecting on his own isolation and how he may actually need others.

I think rickest rick needed to fill his loophole by killing Diane. He was the first to do it, then he was the last. And the only way to keep the experiment going was keep doing it, hurting himself for ever to keep himself in agony and vengeful (also company), since there's no more Diane after all. But anyway there's infinite cosmos beyond the rfc, he only has to WANT to leave.

I also really did love seeing Rick in both Morty's working together not to mention that Brie fight scene between Rick Rick prime and evil Morty was wicked 🔥
I also have to wonder if this is the true end of Rick prime... At least most of the ricks have clones stored in vets all over the place throughout multiple dimensions and are able to transfer their consciousness from one body to the other... So perhaps Rick prime isn't completely dead... Maybe we will in the next season or so see him return with him actively hunting c-137?

I do still wonder what rick prime's motivations were. Like after discovering portal travel how did he get to the idea that killing Diane and making other ricks hunt him was the best thing to do with it? I'm guessing he saw Diane as holding ricks back from true greatness or something?

Nux had a super cool take on Prime Rick. Prime Rick being a more sociopathic version or Rick percieves any Rick that chooses his family over science as both being and thinking of himself as better than him because Prime Rick isn't capable of love to the same capacity as our Rick who chose his a life with his loving wife over being a science god essentially.

Whoa the idea that Morty found some enjoyment in company that respected him is interesting. I think maybe our Rick and Evil Morty will have a building chemistry based on both of them having a need for others in their lives in some sense and being so compatible for each other. It would be interesting if our Morty and Evil Morty developed some sort of rivalry over this.

Excellent analysis. I've come to believe that Prime's motivation is an overwhelming need to be the best Rick, to prove himself to be the best Rick, no matter who gets hurt in the process. He obviously doesn't define "best" in a sense of moral fortitude or compassion for others; he just wants to be the most talented and most intelligent Rick out there. I don't think he necessarily needs an audience (although he'd like one) since he goes to incredible lengths to hide and protect himself, but he does need to feel like all other Ricks are beneath him. He leaves his isolation to harm other Ricks not to draw them in, but to prove to himself that he's better than this or that Rick he's becoming insecure about.
That's essentially it; it might seem like a hair split of difference but I think it's one that's vital. Prime is C-137 unmoored from all values beyond a desire to prove to himself (and primarily himself, far more so than others) that he's the best, even if that means wiping out family from existence. He won't believe he's the best unless he's able to destroy any Rick he wants at any time. Erasing Diane from all existences was, at least to me, probably over something as trivial as proving to just a few Ricks that he was more intelligent and more powerful than them. The consequences of doing so be damned; he needed his quick fix of feeling superior to a Rick or two, even if his actions created innumerable new enemies and would eventually lead to his own downfall.
Uncle Slow's death may've been somewhat of a joke, but it showed that even Prime is hurt by the deaths of "family," meaning he was probably hurt over annihilating Diane from the multiverse. However, he destroys Uncle Slow to teach Rick (and the Mortys) "a lesson," that Prime's better than they are, so they better believe that he is so he can finally believe that he is. The pain he inflicts on himself doesn't matter, the danger he exposes himself to doesn't matter, the need for more isolation and hiding doesn't matter...nothing matters beyond finding a way to get himself to believe that he's genuinely the best. Nothing matters beyond an overweening need to feel superior, with all his actions emerging as a consequence of acting on that need.
Prime needed to feel like he was the best, and he was perfectly willing to behave like a fool to satisfy that need.

I don't think I would say Evil Morty is smarter than Rick, a lot of the stuff he uses seems to be modified Rick tech as well as him taking plenty of L's this episode. Rick had already basically figured out how to catch Rick Prime, Evil Morty just made a suggestion on how to narrow the search (which actually ended up failing because it was a trap). I would say Evil Morty besting Rick Prime is way more about Rick underestimating Morty's rather than Evil Morty just being smarter.

I think Evil Morty better encapsulates the "I stand on the shoulder of giants" quote, even though he'll never admit it. In that he is better and smarter than Rick but not in a quantifiable comparison, but rather that everything he builds is an improvement of what other Ricks have built. So his intelligence is basically Rick's intelligence, plus adding his own takes on Rick's inventions and always making a better version of them.

I think evil morty didn't use the device actual lines up with his statement "To ensure his future privacy". He obviously couldn't use it on all mortys due to him removing himself in the process and using it on the other Sanchezes in any orientation would ensure that someone would be after him. If he were to eliminate every member or multiple members, then the ones left will seek him for revenge. Not to mention, the device doesn't eliminate the memory of people being eliminated; so someone will take notice and eventually seek him out, to satiate their curiosity or endeavor.
Also forgot to add another detail which would add more to his statement is that the device also didn't remove the influence of the target that it eliminated. Meaning ricks garage is at everyone's disposal (my proof is when they eliminate Mr. Slow. His wife and kids were still there after he was deleted).

Every person has an ideal and a true version of themselves. Who we want to be and who we truly are, without pretense or denial, are two very different things.
Rick Prime and evil morty were both the ideal. But our rick and morty are the truest version of their aggregate personas. They're true to themselves, or at least open to being true. Rick continues to let go of the bitter past, and morty stands up for himself more each episode. We are watching the process of personal acceptance and maturity, for both characters.

That was an excellent breakdown /analysis of episode 5. I don't really have anything to add, but I will say...I'm getting secondhand anxiety for Rick. I mean, Evil Morty making his return and helping Rick track down Rick Prime and serve him on a silver platter sounds like a finale episode on paper. However, it seems like Evil Morty was and still is Rick's biggest villain. He has outsmarted Rick at every turn and now has his life in the palm of his hand. I'm sure Rick will try and figure out a way to kill him so I'm excited to see how things unfold throughout the season. I don't think they'll put a button on that storyline this season but maybe next season. Evil Morty is a serious threat and I don't see how Rick can beat him, especially at this point.

Evil Morty has fallen prey to power of infinity. With it, his greatest achievement is escapism from idiot-ricks that live in the shadows of portal gun's inventors. He is his own worse enemy. He is needy but he doesn't admit it. He acts in certain ways, so Rick would act in way he wants without him asking. With the Mortiest Morty, he wants him to come with, and he plays it wrong. He mentions infinite Summers, so the Summer from his universe is also a smart Summer and is part of the Council of Summers, perhaps comparable to Space Beth in combat, but closer to the techs then Space Beth.

Wanted to point out that the point of the Jetsons reference and evil morty seeing all the portal users was a reference to him being outside the central finite curve. Rick is not the smartest man in the universe outside the curve. In those variations of the universe other people and races are smart enough to make their own portal tech.
