First 2D Mario game I've bought in years, it gives me the same feeling of playing Super Mario World as a kid, so much character and life to it! I'm so thrilled Nintendo is breathing life into their games again.
As someone who grew up with DS and Wii this is so much better. So much fun and vibrancy. Full of amazing creativity. Only things I didnt like is lack of tower levels and boring jr fights. Also, why doesnt world 3 have a Palace level. Anyways its AMAZING
I personally believe they never stopped breathing life into their games, but I respect your opinion! For example, you gotta try Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom which came out recently too!
I just had one where the secret was to move a pipe over and use it to hit an invisible block, I figured it out first in a random group of 4, got 2 of the others to get it down....then all 3 of us spent like 10 minutes trying to get our Mario to understand how to push the pipe 😂 Honestly that has to be my favorite 2d mario experience so far, and I'm a closeted diehard for these games
I've played all of these and none hold a candle to Wonder's Dolphin badge. The penguin suit and frog suit make you swim faster, but they don't make you nearly as maneuverable underwater as the dolphin badge does. Plus the dolphin badge doesn't hinder or change your core platforming abilities when you're on dry land. Also because it's a badge and not a powerup, you can have any of the game's powerups active with the dolphin badge. No contest.
That one jump to the beat extra level was possibly one of the most fun yet difficult and infuriating mario levels I've ever played (I been playing since the wii iteration)
I agree. Love all the Mario’s but the last two 2D were fun fillers with my kids but lacking what I kept assuming would show up somewhere. However, this game gives what I NEVER could have assumed would EVER be there! Haha it’s so much goofy fun! My kids and I scream and laugh and jump up and down. They yell, 1,2,3 Jump!!!!!!! At the top of their longs flying into the air as the “monster” every time and I just smile thinking how this will be their childhood memory. That’s pretty priceless.
Criticizing the new Mario bros. games as flawless diamonds is the most damning praise I’ve ever heard, and you’re right! I love your style of reviews in that you don’t just break down mechanics and explain what the game is, but focus on what made it sing to your soul. This is great, I would love to see more of your thoughts on other games you don’t typically cover!
I clicked on this very quickly. The way you talk about the games you choose to focus be it story or just what you enjoy is always a delight. I think it because you are a very well rounded thinker, who is very well spoken. Even when you don't appreciate the game you take about you still make it sound interesting enough to maybe help someone take a chance on it incase it might be something that they'd enjoy better. Keep talking and i will watch what what you put out
The change Nintendo did is that they have delayed the "major surprise factor" behind the Wonder Flower. There's 2 gimmicks per main level (the level gimmick & the Wonder gimmick) instead of just 1. Otherwise the Wonder gimmick would be clearly visible to be introduced the moment a level was entered, so they let the level design take the first surprise (usually spoiled by level name & thumbnail), then put the Wonder to explode surprise & joy in your face later. There's a reason final boss twists are so fun. They made every level have a twist. Amazing.
This game to me really feels like if kirby's epic yarn and dkc(2 or 3) had a drunk night at bar, got married, had a kid, and the kid had a mustache. Probably just me though.
This game's joy is infectious! Literally can't play it without smiling! Just goes to show what happens when people have the time they need ti make a great game!
This game LOOOOOOVES Super Mario World. :)) Sure, NSMBWii and beyond had some Mario World isms but never as much as Wonder’s cute little musical references, recreated sound effects, and the entire game’s aesthetic straight up being inspired by 90s Mario artwork. It’s absolutely (for lack of a better term) wonderful! :))
I got 100% completion in wonder Monday night. This game is absolutely amazing. The first 2D Mario I ever played was the original NEW SMB for DS and I also played the one for Wii as well. I didn’t get 2 for the 3DS but I got the one for Wii U and by that time I was extremely bored of the formula, even as a 11 year old. I never once finished NSMB U. But once I saw the first trailer for Wonder I was immediately sold, the new art style and animations and the wonder flower mechanic were the two biggest selling points. And I can confidently say this is my favorite 2D Mario ever and the best in the series.
I really love this game, the only two criticisms I have with the game is that the variety of bosses is poor or non-existent and that connects to my other problem which is that most of the bosses are too easy, add a couple of new attacks to them and patterns would be great, but other than that I love everything else about the game
I agree on the bosses, but I also don’t think they’ve ever been that important to Mario. In the classic 8-bit/16-bit games you can beat all the bosses in like 5 seconds, and it’s not much better in NSMB. Even a lot of the 3D games have lackluster boss fights, like Mario 64 for example or Odyssey.
Honestly, that is the one general nitpick with this game that I noticed(And I agree), but it doesn’t hold it back from being a worthy challenger to Baldur’s Gate 3 for Game of the Year.
@@SagittariusAyyso real, the amount of people i've seen say 'oh it's just another mario platformer it can't win goty' is ridiculous, just shows how people are hypocrites. If you haven't played BG3 you 'can't have an opinion' on it, yet I've seen people forget the name of Wonder and still criticise it for ridiculous reasons
Yeah, I think this is because how great is otherwise and how Big the contrast is. Genuely makes you ask yourself "What happened?" . Why is so Creative the game with new variety of enemies level design wise and then the conclusion of the world is rather bland, or worse, nonexistent? It really leaves me somewhat concerned. More when recent DK and Kirby has those Monsters as bosses. I hope Nintendo hear this claim and start to raise the quality of the bosses, Mario games with Kirby tier quality bosses would be insane.
Really great video. One minor correction: there are a few levels that reuse wonder effects. Most are unique though. But there's at least 4 I remember that do share wonder effects with another level.
I feel the same way about this game, like people are not talking about it enough. I picked up Spider-Man 2 on the same day, got tired of it after a couple of of hours, jumped into Wonder and now I haven’t gotten back to Spider-Man!
Tf? Is talked about a lot! Is the first mario game in 6 years since Odyssey and is the first 2D mario game in 11 years since U, actually is the first 2D mario game since World that actually push the boundaries of the franchise
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first Mario game since 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy to make me smile ear to ear the whole way through, simply through its pure unbridled imagination and whimsy. No game since Galaxy, at least in my opinion, had been able to capture that sense of pure MAGIC in both gameplay and aesthetics. Wonder is the first game to break that pattern. Galaxy focuses on the dark, vastness of the cosmos, put emphasis on atmosphere, taking your time, and learning the backstory of its major characters. It’s gameplay is wondrous, using the Wii’s capabilities to the fullest, while making you feel like this unstoppable force soaring through the Universe. On the other hand, Wonder is focused on the whimsical, unimaginable ideas that come from the premise of “what if we made a Mario Sidescroller, anything BUT a Mario Sidescroller”. It takes the core gameplay established in Super Mario World, and then refined in the DS’s New Super Mario Bros, and completely flips it on its head, while also having lots to dig into gameplay wise beyond its Wonder Flower Events and dreamy visuals. As of right now, Wonder is my favorite 2D Mario game of all time, and my second favorite game in the series behind Mario Galaxy.
The asymmetrical multiplayer with complete randos across the world is my absolute favorite part of the game and helping people find secrets is exactly why that is. You can almost feel the other players going "OHHH" when you show them how to do something they didn't try yet
Great game. Been playing for a week now. Great concepts. Amazing music. Awesome graphics. Enjoyable gameplay. It would have been perfect if it had the other cool suits from past Mario games: Raccoon, Frog, Penguin, Tanooki, and Hammer. Unfortunately it does not. But still a solid game.
0:42 we all have lonely periods of time, you seem like a great guy though so you can definitely make some friends, a great place is the gym, you got this man
I think one of the best additions to super Mario wonder is the talking flowers. It’s the first thing in a Mario game that actually has voice lines since sunshine. It gives the levels a feeling of life that other Mario games just don’t seem to have. Whether it’s a funny one liner, or a useful hint, I’m just glad that they’re here, and I hope Nintendo adds something like them in future games.
I know it's a common comparison but this game is a lot like Super Mario World. It has new and unique power ups, it has interesting level themes, it has fun puzzle levels, and it has a sense of intrigue and... well... wonder. The only thing that is unique to this game, aside from the power-ups, is the wonder flowers, which change everything up in an unnexpected way nearly every time.
My son’s grandmother preorder the game for him and they got it on midnight the night of its release. Him, his mom & I have been playing it ever since. It’s very good altogether and challenging at some points. The Wonder flowers truly make each level a unique experience
I still don't have it, but so far I'm kind of impressed by what I see but still somewhat skeptical about it. One big thing I love they did was remove the level timer ⌛👌
I also really appreciate the world progression in this game. All the NSMB games follow the exact same progression; Grass > Desert > Snow/Jungle/Beach > Mountain > Cloud > Volcano. It’s boring as shit, especially after 4-5 games. I love that Wonder doesn’t do this, they combine themes, switch up the order, and provide new aesthetics like the temple/falls world or the haunted swamp mines. I also love how non-linear the progression is. Doing levels in the Petal Isels in between worlds really makes the journey feel far more cohesive than just going world to world on a map. It’s a nice way to break up the pace (and a nice way to have a water/beach world without pelting the player with nonstop water levels). They even mix that up later by switching from water levels to candy themed areas. Then you have the bowser world after you finish world 6, which again isn’t even an official world but it’s just a cool area in the game outside of the main 6, like the petal isles (and the special world, which works like SMW). Where NSMB felt like a series of video game levels, this feels like a living breathing cohesive world
The wonder flowers (Not seeds) are the best thing to happen to the Mario series. You can complete a level normally and then start tripping balls to the wall bonkers to really shake things up. I do agree that the sudden shift to top-down was the most surprising and creative. In a game with singing plants, doors, and ghosts, flower people you can water at the end of a level if you have water in your trunk, and a whole slew of creative and mechanically interesting enemies who actually react to you and things happening around them, like goombas panicking as a giant spike ball hurdles towards them. Yeah, this game does a LOT and does it all so bloody well. This is what happens when you let developers actually complete their games rather than rushing out a buggy mess to meet a release date. You just need to let Nintendo cook and they'll wheel out a banquet fit for whatever royalty or deity you could possibly imagine
7:31 "One thing that makes Wonder truly unexpected and exciting, is the Wonder Seed." _shows collection of _*_Wonder Flower_*_ moments_ ... Mr FatBrett... please... it hurts... _continues to call them _*_Wonder Seeds_* ... Please...
Something to keep in mind with 2d Mario is it went away for some thing like 18 years. At least NSMB on Wii. We wanted that experience back. Nintendo drove it into the ground, but it was very welcome at the time.
I'll be honest with you, the last Triple A Super Mario title I spent any real time on was Super Mario World thirty years ago. I'd managed to skip Super Mario 64, the Game Cube titles, and the Wii titles. I almost took the bait with Odyssey because it looked pretty good, but I put it off. Even with Wonder, I waited about a month or so, but from what I saw, I knew I wanted to try it. I'm blown away by how entertaining this is. I've already put about four or five hours into it and your right, there are just so many twists and turns with how the flowers change each level's perspective -- and the one thing I cannot say during all these hours spent is that I was bored at any point. I'm glad I bought it.
While this game will not have the same impact on the gaming industry as SMB3 or World, I do think it's the best 2D Mario game ever created. It has all the best elements of 3 and World with so much more, and everything is strictly better compared to the old games. I can't think of anything Wonder doesn't do better than 3 or World.
I'd give SMW the edge in terms of soundtrack and boss fights. Also the final castle is better as well. But overall Wonder was still delightful and definitely deserves to be discussed along side SMB3 and SMW
Hey, now! SMB3 was SMB3 done right, but this is an outstanding 2D addition to the series - the best since SMW easily. I’m partial to the 2D entries, so IMO it’s the best new Mario game since SMW.
Sunshine is a good game. But it’s in between two of the greatest games to ever be created. The problem isn’t sunshine, it’s that the other two are so good.
I remember the moment i noticed that the DS Super Mario game was a remake of the original Super Mario Bros game, i could no longer not notice it. The mario game you were tearing a new one in looks like a remake of a remake of the original Super Mario Bros. I don't think you can do more repetitive than that.
Mario acquiring the dolphin badge is not how we see Mario change the way he swam for the first time. What about the frog suit in Super Mario Bros. 3? Pretty good video otherwise as you explained how the wonder seeds really change up the gameplay with new gimmicks. Reminds me of the DKC series and now I'm really tempted to pick this game up!
I wasn't really interested in picking up this game i'll be real but listening to you talk about it, watching all the different kinds of insane shit that was going on, I was enamored. I am definitely more keen to pick this game up now than I was before. Thank you for that
Honestly if they did a dlc and just made super Mario world 2 return to donut kingdom in this same style, and it had all the same levels but with a wonder effect or something similar just a bit different, I think I’d cry tears of pure and the turning of the plains into a yoshi kingdom or some kind of other land governed by some weird prince/princess at this point would be too amazing.
Let me preface by saying that I try my best not to let “hype” and bias sway my opinion. And I’m not even a big 2d mario fan, or mario fan in general. Mario wonder sits right next to pikmin 4 as my game of the year, I can’t decide which one
I never played this game but watching this reminds me a lot of Nier Automata, with the changes of game play and the surprise help at the end. Not just a stranding game, but also an automata game.
Not a good comparison, and not a compliment of Super Mario Wonder because Super Mario World was _bad_ by 2D Mario standards in basically every way it could have been.
@@YOGI-kb9tg Popularity and quality are not correlated. It's only popular because gamers don't understand or value gameplay or game design, so they're not even capable of recognizing _why_ it's one of the worst 2D Mario games.

Regarding swimming, Super Mario 3 has the frog suit power-up
And the penguin suit in NSMB
The Blue shell powerup from New Super Mario Bros. Ds increases your swim speed aswell but is on the rare side so makes sense why most don't know of it
You can hold a shell or key in SMW to swim way faster.
No contest.

You just need to let Nintendo cook and they'll wheel out a banquet fit for whatever royalty or deity you could possibly imagine
"and because I have no friends, I have to tell the Internet." You've no idea how hard I felt that sentence. 🤣😭😭
7:31 "One thing that makes Wonder truly unexpected and exciting, is the Wonder Seed."

Couldn't have said any of it better. This encapsulates my experience extremely well.
I'm glad I bought it.
the multiplayer reminded me heavily of journey too!! first thing I thought of, especially with the little tiny ways to communicate
Mario have in fact, “been that good” don’t let the Scrooge fool you.
You're making me really wanna play it. Good review!
2:39 So you dont know about the frog suit of SMB3 lol. It improved Mario swimming.
haven't felt this good about Mario games since Super Mario World.
Wow! This Game is Awesome!! This is Super Mario Bros. 3 Done Right.
Hey, now! SMB3 was SMB3 done right, but this is an outstanding 2D addition to the series - the best since SMW easily.
I’m partial to the 2D entries, so IMO it’s the best new Mario game since SMW.
It's one of the THREE best Mario games ever. Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Sunshine :D Good one.
I personally hate Sunshine. I think Galaxy is a more fun experience.
@@MoonieMuses Sunshine is easily one of the worst mainline Mario titles ever created. Its predecessor as well as its successor eat it alive.
@@FelixS.god sunshine is in such an unfortunate position now that I think about it. It’s an ok game stuck between two absolute masterpieces of games
Sunshine is a good game. But it’s in between two of the greatest games to ever be created. The problem isn’t sunshine, it’s that the other two are so good.
Starnd style gameplay originated with the souls games.
It’s a small thing, but this game has a lot more artistic detail than NSMBU.
Nintendo knows what it means to make a masterpiece video game. I was blown away by Super Mario Bros Wonder & Zelda TOTK.
The deconstruction of villainy- Sekiro's lord Genichiro immoral patriot
I wasn't really interested in picking up this game i'll be real but listening to you talk about it, watching all the different kinds of insane shit that was going on, I was enamored. I am definitely more keen to pick this game up now than I was before. Thank you for that
I watched about a dozen reviews and this is the one that convinced me to go out and buy the game
The little puzzles feel like GBA Metroid shine spark puzzles. I like the little skill challenges.
Thanks ObeseBrett
smash i love mario
8:33 people already have. there's a game called Toodee and Topdee with this exact premise
you ever think of exploring the lore of donkey kong country
You can swim fast with a frog suit in Mario 3.
I seriously felt like I was playing Super Mario World again
Let me preface by saying that I try my best not to let “hype” and bias sway my opinion. And I’m not even a big 2d mario fan, or mario fan in general. Mario wonder sits right next to pikmin 4 as my game of the year, I can’t decide which one
I really love the speed. The creativity. The wonderflowers are so cool. The platforming is so fun. It’s sooooo good😭😭😭😭😭😭
I never played this game but watching this reminds me a lot of Nier Automata, with the changes of game play and the surprise help at the end. Not just a stranding game, but also an automata game.
No Mario game will ever come close to Galaxy, regardless of how modern it can be
Your favorite wonder seed is like playing OG
Zelda
"Death Stranding like"
Very weird way to say "Souls-like"
Mario wonder is the modern super mario world. Its just that good.
Not a good comparison, and not a compliment of Super Mario Wonder because Super Mario World was _bad_ by 2D Mario standards in basically every way it could have been.
@@alondite215 are you being serious? Mario world is beloved
@@YOGI-kb9tg Popularity and quality are not correlated. It's only popular because gamers don't understand or value gameplay or game design, so they're not even capable of recognizing _why_ it's one of the worst 2D Mario games.
@@alondite215super Mario world is the BEST side scroller Mario game ever. That’s a fact
@@Poundz978 Its a "fact" if you have no idea what you're talking about. It has _the worst_ game design of any mainline Mario sidescroller, and _that_ is an _actual_ fact, and one I can and _will_ prove with observable and therefor irrefutable in-game evidence if you'd like me to demonstrate to you and everyone else here how utterly ignorant and objectively wrong you are.
Wonder is phenomenal in just about every way. Even better with friends. Wonder is the gold standard for 2D side scrollers and 2D platformers. Everyone needs to play Wonder.
2:53 are you forgetting about the frog suit?
This is up there with super Mario bros 3 as my favorite mario brothers game
Maybe the best 2d Mario game but definitely not the best Mario game, that goes to odyssey or galaxy
This
8:34 A developer did make a whole game using this top-down mechanic called Toodee and Topdee.
I’m glad to hear it’s another world. I’m getting it tmm
