First 2D Mario game I've bought in years, it gives me the same feeling of playing Super Mario World as a kid, so much character and life to it! I'm so thrilled Nintendo is breathing life into their games again.
As someone who grew up with DS and Wii this is so much better. So much fun and vibrancy. Full of amazing creativity. Only things I didnt like is lack of tower levels and boring jr fights. Also, why doesnt world 3 have a Palace level. Anyways its AMAZING
I personally believe they never stopped breathing life into their games, but I respect your opinion! For example, you gotta try Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom which came out recently too!
I just had one where the secret was to move a pipe over and use it to hit an invisible block, I figured it out first in a random group of 4, got 2 of the others to get it down....then all 3 of us spent like 10 minutes trying to get our Mario to understand how to push the pipe 😂 Honestly that has to be my favorite 2d mario experience so far, and I'm a closeted diehard for these games
I've played all of these and none hold a candle to Wonder's Dolphin badge. The penguin suit and frog suit make you swim faster, but they don't make you nearly as maneuverable underwater as the dolphin badge does. Plus the dolphin badge doesn't hinder or change your core platforming abilities when you're on dry land. Also because it's a badge and not a powerup, you can have any of the game's powerups active with the dolphin badge. No contest.
Criticizing the new Mario bros. games as flawless diamonds is the most damning praise I’ve ever heard, and you’re right! I love your style of reviews in that you don’t just break down mechanics and explain what the game is, but focus on what made it sing to your soul. This is great, I would love to see more of your thoughts on other games you don’t typically cover!
I agree. Love all the Mario’s but the last two 2D were fun fillers with my kids but lacking what I kept assuming would show up somewhere. However, this game gives what I NEVER could have assumed would EVER be there! Haha it’s so much goofy fun! My kids and I scream and laugh and jump up and down. They yell, 1,2,3 Jump!!!!!!! At the top of their longs flying into the air as the “monster” every time and I just smile thinking how this will be their childhood memory. That’s pretty priceless.
I really love this game, the only two criticisms I have with the game is that the variety of bosses is poor or non-existent and that connects to my other problem which is that most of the bosses are too easy, add a couple of new attacks to them and patterns would be great, but other than that I love everything else about the game
I agree on the bosses, but I also don’t think they’ve ever been that important to Mario. In the classic 8-bit/16-bit games you can beat all the bosses in like 5 seconds, and it’s not much better in NSMB. Even a lot of the 3D games have lackluster boss fights, like Mario 64 for example or Odyssey.
Honestly, that is the one general nitpick with this game that I noticed(And I agree), but it doesn’t hold it back from being a worthy challenger to Baldur’s Gate 3 for Game of the Year.

This game LOOOOOOVES Super Mario World. :)) Sure, NSMBWii and beyond had some Mario World isms but never as much as Wonder’s cute little musical references, recreated sound effects, and the entire game’s aesthetic straight up being inspired by 90s Mario artwork. It’s absolutely (for lack of a better term) wonderful! :))

The change Nintendo did is that they have delayed the "major surprise factor" behind the Wonder Flower. There's 2 gimmicks per main level (the level gimmick & the Wonder gimmick) instead of just 1. Otherwise the Wonder gimmick would be clearly visible to be introduced the moment a level was entered, so they let the level design take the first surprise (usually spoiled by level name & thumbnail), then put the Wonder to explode surprise & joy in your face later. There's a reason final boss twists are so fun. They made every level have a twist. Amazing.
That one jump to the beat extra level was possibly one of the most fun yet difficult and infuriating mario levels I've ever played (I been playing since the wii iteration)
I clicked on this very quickly. The way you talk about the games you choose to focus be it story or just what you enjoy is always a delight. I think it because you are a very well rounded thinker, who is very well spoken. Even when you don't appreciate the game you take about you still make it sound interesting enough to maybe help someone take a chance on it incase it might be something that they'd enjoy better. Really great video. One minor correction: there are a few levels that reuse wonder effects. Most are unique though. But there's at least 4 I remember that do share wonder effects with another level.
I got 100% completion in wonder Monday night. This game is absolutely amazing. The first 2D Mario I ever played was the original NEW SMB for DS and I also played the one for Wii as well. I didn’t get 2 for the 3DS but I got the one for Wii U and by that time I was extremely bored of the formula, even as a 11 year old. I never once finished NSMB U. And I can confidently say this is my favorite 2D Mario ever and the best in the series.
It's a fun game, but it isn't perfect. I feel like there isn't that much challenge. I get that mario games are rarely difficult, but I feel like there are some moments that could have added some difficulty. One of the Kirby games has time trail modes which are often sorta difficult maps to be beaten quickly. These maps definately strike a balance of difficulty and playablity. Besides maybe the expert badges, the game just doesn't reward skill. The compairsons between this and Mario World isn't fair. World had lots of secrets, the levels felt connected to the map you are on, and the special worlds you can get very early in the game. And not every Special Level wasn't just do a difficult thing. Wonder has 8 hidden checkpoints which many of them are just don't do Wonder mode. It was a big let down that you couldn't go to a different part of the game when you find the first hidden seed. I think what this game has over most of the Mario games is that it's extremely stylish, and its great that every level as a wonder area. My problem with that though is, without the wonder section, you have some levels that are just lackluster without it. Definately not saying the game is bad, its great. But I remember an era of Nintendo with bigger and weirder risks. If you want to play a gameboy Super Mario Wonder, go play Super Mario Land 2. That game is contanstly weird. Nothing makes sense. It's a Mario Platformer were there is no Mushroom Kingdom, you have Jason maskes just walking around, and every boss is different.
Nintendo reducing the difficulty to their games has paid off tremendously in making their games much more accessible to casual gamers which is the bulk of their audience. They end up leaving the hardcore gamers behind but trading a much smaller audience for a significantly bigger one is an easy decision to make. Fun and relaxing sells more than "git gud". Many critics said similar things about the latest Animal Crossing. It's the most successful entry to the series by a long shot. BTW, there's no such thing as a perfect game so that's a non starter. I haven't heard anyone say the game is flawless, only the game exceeded their own expectations and is greatly enjoyable.
@@BronzeLincolns81 Bud. Let's stop using "git gud" to defuse the need to have challenge. I'm not saying it should be like Super Meat Boy. What I am saying is that Nintendo has the ability to make difficult actually fun. Kirby Return to Dream Land, probably one of the easiest Kirby games out there which are even easier than Mario, has a quite a few levels that are legitmately challenging and more than beatable, but encourages actually skilled gameplay long after you beat them. Sakurai himself did an excellent discussion on how difficulty affects broad appeal on his Sora channel. It's great. I implore you to watch it. But even he gave an option for harder play in his games and is lauded for it. I don't really see myself playing wonder once I finished this game. Maybe beat every level on the expert badges. I do see myself going back to getting great times for Kirby or just attempting to get them again. And I said perfect because he is calling this game the best 2D Mario game ever. It's not. I believe Mario 3, Super Mario World, and Land 2 offer much stronger representations of what the series can offer, which are definitely beyond expectations. If you don't play into the Wonder Seeds, the game really suffers for it. World and Mario 3 has what makes games great a requirement to play. You have no option to play the not-fun parts of either game. Land 2, besides maybe Wario's castle, isn't difficult at all. 2 to 3 hour game at best. But finding those secret levels, and exploring the imagination of what Mario can be outside of Mushroom or Mushroom like kindgoms was downright inspiring. And that was 1992. Wonder is definitely a joy to look at but good god did this game get a lot of accolades that were just not deserved. I mean, lets talk about your git gud. Some pre-reviewers called this game Dark Souls for Mario, just because of that ghost mode. It's not like World because again, its missing the need to go back to beating levels long after you played them and a lack of alternate paths. And it's not Mario 3 because that game has some real challenges later on. What I will say Wonder does very right is give a bump just hard enough to show that Mario is extremely imaginative and gives inspiration to play other games. Which is what Mario 3 and World did. (I kinda feel like you have to like Mario to begin with if you like Land 2.) If that's all I get out of Wonder, great! That's what a solid game is. But the best Mario game, no. God no.
I still don't have it, but so far I'm kind of impressed by what I see but still somewhat skeptical about it. One big thing I love they did was remove the level timer ⌛👌
Everyone keeps saying that this recalls Super Mario World, but it really doesn't and is all the better for it because Super Mario World actually kind of sucks as far as 2D Mario games go. Some of the worst level design in series history. No, this recalls the depth, the density of interaction, and playfulness of Super Mario Bros 3.
I feel the same way about this game, like people are not talking about it enough. I picked up Spider-Man 2 on the same day, got tired of it after a couple of of hours, jumped into Wonder and now I haven’t gotten back to Spider-Man!
Tf? Is talked about a lot! Is the first mario game in 6 years since Odyssey and is the first 2D mario game in 11 years since U, actually is the first 2D mario game since World that actually push the boundaries of the franchise
Great game. Been playing for a week now. Great concepts. Amazing music. Awesome graphics. Enjoyable gameplay. It would have been perfect if it had the other cool suits from past Mario games: Raccoon, Frog, Penguin, Tanooki, and Hammer. Unfortunately it does not. But still a solid game.
Let me preface by saying that I try my best not to let “hype” and bias sway my opinion. And I’m not even a big 2d mario fan, or mario fan in general. Mario wonder sits right next to pikmin 4 as my game of the year, I can’t decide which one
Can someone tell me if it FEELS better than new super Mario bros U deluxe? Tried playing it on switch and that game feels like you’re playing in a dream… there’s so much input lag it’s insane and they physics were just gross
I know it's a common comparison but this game is a lot like Super Mario World. It has new and unique power ups, it has interesting level themes, it has fun puzzle levels, and it has a sense of intrigue and... well... wonder. The only thing that is unique to this game, aside from the power-ups, is the wonder flowers, which change everything up in an unnexpected way nearly every time.
Mario acquiring the dolphin badge is not how we see Mario change the way he swam for the first time. What about the frog suit in Super Mario Bros. 3? Pretty good video otherwise as you explained how the wonder seeds really change up the gameplay with new gimmicks. Reminds me of the DKC series and now I'm really tempted to pick this game up!
0:42 we all have lonely periods of time, you seem like a great guy though so you can definitely make some friends, a great place is the gym, you got this man
While this game will not have the same impact on the gaming industry as SMB3 or World, I do think it's the best 2D Mario game ever created. It has all the best elements of 3 and World with so much more, and everything is strictly better compared to the old games. I can't think of anything Wonder doesn't do better than 3 or World.
I'd give SMW the edge in terms of soundtrack and boss fights. Also the final castle is better as well. But overall Wonder was still delightful and definitely deserves to be discussed along side SMB3 and SMW
I remember the moment i noticed that the DS Super Mario game was a remake of the original Super Mario Bros game, i could no longer not notice it. The mario game you were tearing a new one in looks like a remake of a remake of the original Super Mario Bros. I don't think you can do more repetitive than that.
Supposedly, Nintendo wanted a higher level of quality for this game since it would be releasing after the Movie, and they suspected sales for the game would increase. All it took was a fucking Movie for them to finally decide to make a good game.
Wonder is phenomenal in just about every way. Even better with friends. Wonder is the gold standard for 2D side scrollers and 2D platformers. Everyone needs to play Wonder.
Hey, now! SMB3 was SMB3 done right, but this is an outstanding 2D addition to the series - the best since SMW easily. I’m partial to the 2D entries, so IMO it’s the best new Mario game since SMW.
Sunshine is a good game. But it’s in between two of the greatest games to ever be created. The problem isn’t sunshine, it’s that the other two are so good.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first Mario game since 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy to make me smile ear to ear the whole way through, simply through its pure unbridled imagination and whimsy. No game since Galaxy, at least in my opinion, had been able to capture that sense of pure MAGIC in both gameplay and aesthetics. Wonder is the first game to break that pattern. Galaxy focuses on the dark, vastness of the cosmos, put emphasis on atmosphere, taking your time, and learning the backstory of its major characters. It’s gameplay is wondrous, using the Wii’s capabilities to the fullest, while making you feel like this unstoppable force soaring through the Universe. On the other hand, Wonder is focused on the whimsical, unimaginable ideas that come from the premise of “what if we made a Mario Sidescroller, anything BUT a Mario Sidescroller”. It takes the core gameplay established in Super Mario World, and then refined in the DS’s New Super Mario Bros, and completely flips it on its head, while also having lots to dig into gameplay wise beyond its Wonder Flower Events and dreamy visuals. As of right now, Wonder is my favorite 2D Mario game of all time, and my second favorite game in the series behind Mario Galaxy.
The asymmetrical multiplayer with complete randos across the world is my absolute favorite part of the game and helping people find secrets is exactly why that is. You can almost feel the other players going "OHHH" when you show them how to do something they didn't try yet
Nintendo's new model to lock paid DLC content like Mario Kart expansion tracks behind an almost worthless online service will carry over to Mario Wonder....its just a terrible business practice. Your not so much buying the DLC as renting it, if the online service model changes or a new platform is released this content could be revoked. Its a huge problem and its being mostly ignored by the sleeping masses, another loss for the consumer. I would have no problem getting the content with paid online service, but charging for both is disingenuous and gross. Very disappointed with Nintendo for this. Losing the E-Shop sucked, this sucks even worse. Games as a service ladies and gentlemen...yay!
This game is blah to me. I wanted to love it. I had an ok time while it was on but the more I thought about it the more disappointed I became. The aesthetics feel like an upgraded NSMB, the music is so bland and forgettable for a Mario title, the gameplay feels at times insultingly easy, there’s no boss variety, the powerups are just ok and there aren’t enough of them, the game isn’t long enough. I could go on. Currently replaying 3D World and am floored by it every time. Wish Wonder made me feel the same.
Hey @FatBrett. I’m so sorry for commenting this on your recent video because it’s irrelevant to what you made, but I needed to so that you can read it. May you please do a video essay on LOU2? I need to know if I hate you or not. Totally joking but seriously. After watching the videos on the first one - slightly talking about the second - I would really like to know your opinion about the game as a whole. You kinda made the argument about why many were upset at the game that so many are unable to voice out completely. I just hate that whenever theres a discussion about the game it always devolves into 2 camps that are just unbearable.
Not a good comparison, and not a compliment of Super Mario Wonder because Super Mario World was _bad_ by 2D Mario standards in basically every way it could have been.
@@YOGI-kb9tg Popularity and quality are not correlated. It's only popular because gamers don't understand or value gameplay or game design, so they're not even capable of recognizing _why_ it's one of the worst 2D Mario games.
@@Poundz978 Its a "fact" if you have no idea what you're talking about. I'll be honest with you, the last Triple A Super Mario title I spent any real time on was Super Mario World thirty years ago. I'd managed to skip Super Mario 64, the Game Cube titles, and the Wii titles. I almost took the bait with Odyssey because it looked pretty good, but I put it off. Even with Wonder, I waited about a month or so, but from what I saw, I knew I wanted to try it. I'm blown away by how entertaining this is. I've already put about four or five hours into it and your right, there are just so many twists and turns with how the flowers change each level's perspective -- and the one thing I cannot say during all these hours spent is that I was bored at any point. I'm glad I bought it.

The Blue shell powerup from New Super Mario Bros. Ds increases your swim speed aswell but is on the rare side so makes sense why most don't know of it

Great to see a 2d Mario as a flagship title for the first time in nearly 20 years instead of a reskin/uninspired game
Alright Brett you're back! :D
Isn't the racoon the tanuki?
2:39 So you dont know about the frog suit of SMB3 lol. It improved Mario swimming.
Wasn’t at all interested in this game till yesterday morning watching a video. Reminded me of Mario world getting a physical today!!!!!
This hame looks so good to bad my switch broke 2 days before it released 💀
Let me preface by saying that I try my best not to let “hype” and bias sway my opinion. And I’m not even a big 2d mario fan, or mario fan in general. Mario wonder sits right next to pikmin 4 as my game of the year, I can’t decide which one
I really love the speed. The creativity. The wonderflowers are so cool. The platforming is so fun. It’s sooooo good😭😭😭😭😭😭
It’s the best 2D Mario game. Most of the 3D ones still have it beat though.
Nah. The only 3d games that are better are Galaxy 1&2
As well as Odyssey, 3D World, Bowser’s Fury and even Sunshine to an extent.
@@TheMarionick I disagree
There is no universe in which 2D Mario is better than 3D Mario
It’s a small thing, but this game has a lot more artistic detail than NSMBU.
i hear the mario rpg games have plots if you feel like reviewing it
Can someone tell me if it FEELS better than new super Mario bros U deluxe? Tried playing it on switch and that game feels like you’re playing in a dream… there’s so much input lag it’s insane and they physics were just gross
Good yes. Best? .....nope.
That goes to either Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Odessy.
You say wonder seed when you really mean wonder flower. The seeds are the rewards for beating the wonder flower challenges.
Can't wait to play this.
And badges! Badges are a super neat addition to this game and I hope we keep having ways to change our moveset a bit in future games :)
By far the best SMB game since Super Mario World. I was completely blown away by this game.
I remember the moment i noticed that the DS Super Mario game was a remake of the original Super Mario Bros game, i could no longer not notice it.
The mario game you were tearing a new one in looks like a remake of a remake of the original Super Mario Bros. I don't think you can do more repetitive than that.
The Game is amazing! But Super Mario Bros 3 remains the best!😅
I think Odyssey was the best 3d mario. 2d prize goes to wonder.
This is more like Yoshi's Island. Surprises you every level. It breaks every rule of the genre turning it on it's head.
You do see repeat effects for some Wonder Seeds but they are utilized so well that it diesnt matter
Supposedly, Nintendo wanted a higher level of quality for this game since it would be releasing after the Movie, and they suspected sales for the game would increase.
All it took was a fucking Movie for them to finally decide to make a good game.
Good 2D Mario*
3D Mario always had high quality
Except for Sunshine.
Starnd style gameplay originated with the souls games.
the glazing is insane, this is definitely not the best mario game ever
smash i love mario
Never clicked on a video so fast in my life💀💀💀
2:53 are you forgetting about the frog suit?
Spider man 2 content ❌
2D Mario ✅✅✅
Wonder is phenomenal in just about every way. Even better with friends. Wonder is the gold standard for 2D side scrollers and 2D platformers. Everyone needs to play Wonder.
Wow! This Game is Awesome!! This is Super Mario Bros. 3 Done Right.
Hey, now! SMB3 was SMB3 done right, but this is an outstanding 2D addition to the series - the best since SMW easily.
I’m partial to the 2D entries, so IMO it’s the best new Mario game since SMW.
I’m glad to hear it’s another world. I’m getting it tmm
You're making me really wanna play it. Good review!
This game is the very definition of joy.
It's one of the THREE best Mario games ever. Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Sunshine :D Good one.
I personally hate Sunshine. I think Galaxy is a more fun experience.
@@MoonieMuses Sunshine is easily one of the worst mainline Mario titles ever created. Its predecessor as well as its successor eat it alive.
@@FelixS.god sunshine is in such an unfortunate position now that I think about it. It’s an ok game stuck between two absolute masterpieces of games
Sunshine is a good game. But it’s in between two of the greatest games to ever be created. The problem isn’t sunshine, it’s that the other two are so good.
the multiplayer reminded me heavily of journey too!! first thing I thought of, especially with the little tiny ways to communicate
Thanks ObeseBrett
This game really feels magical for the first playthrough, especially the Wonder Flowers.
I love this 😊
8:33 people already have. there's a game called Toodee and Topdee with this exact premise
excuse you. super mario galaxy is the best mario game ever
Galaxy 2
This is definitely my favorite 2D Mario game, there's just so many fun and interesting things about it.
The water movement was so good that I was sad that there weren’t more water levels! I was SAD that there were LESS water levels
Anyone notice how quickly the hype about this game died? I see no one talking about it anymore
Mario have in fact, “been that good” don’t let the Scrooge fool you.
Mario wonder is the modern super mario world. Its just that good.
Not a good comparison, and not a compliment of Super Mario Wonder because Super Mario World was _bad_ by 2D Mario standards in basically every way it could have been.
@@alondite215 are you being serious? Mario world is beloved
@@YOGI-kb9tg Popularity and quality are not correlated. It's only popular because gamers don't understand or value gameplay or game design, so they're not even capable of recognizing _why_ it's one of the worst 2D Mario games.
@@alondite215super Mario world is the BEST side scroller Mario game ever. That’s a fact
@@Poundz978 Its a "fact" if you have no idea what you're talking about. It has _the worst_ game design of any mainline Mario sidescroller, and _that_ is an _actual_ fact, and one I can and _will_ prove with observable and therefor irrefutable in-game evidence if you'd like me to demonstrate to you and everyone else here how utterly ignorant and objectively wrong you are.
hate to be pedantic, but the ACTUAL second-ever strand-type game is Strange Scaffold's 2022 game, Witch Strandings!
I was wondering how (although a fantastic game), he claimed it's "the best mario game" lol.
Then he proceeded to say that the 2d games are no good 😂.
Mario 2 and definitely mario world sht all over this game lol, this guy must have been born in the 2000s.
You're wrong about the water movement.. The frog suit came out in 1990 in Super Mario brothers 3.. Also the penguins suit.
I love the way the game looks. The animations are really something special.
I enjoy the game but to call it the best 2D and 3D mario game ever... Better than Mario odissey mario galaxy ? Mario 64 ??? No way.
The Wonder seed that really surprised me was in the second level of the whole game. Thats when I knew I was in for a good time
I agree Wonder is the best 2D Mario game, but I’m not sure about the best Mario game. I would say most of the 3D Mario games are still better. But that’s my opinion!
Maybe I just need to get further into the game? Seems pretty basic and kinda too easy so far. And I haven't played a traditional platformer in probably 15 years.
I never played this game but watching this reminds me a lot of Nier Automata, with the changes of game play and the surprise help at the end. Not just a stranding game, but also an automata game.
This game is stupid easy. No surprise everyone on RUclips loves it since the difficulty level has been dumbed down to extra chromosome levels
I almost didn’t get this game but bc it seemed too much different from the original Mario bros but I just went with my gut and man it’s the best game I’ve played in years literally!!!
I still don’t see what the hype is about. It looks like an amazing kids game but It doesn’t really bring me(15yo) in.
