Dweezil is speaking to me! I'm currently stuck playing the same stuff over and over and desperately need to learn something new. I love these videos and Dweezil is an amazing guitarist who really knows his stuff. Keep 'em coming!
I once heard Jimi Hendrix saying in an interview that" the worst thing that can happen to your music is getting caught in a Rutt".: It can be very depressing and non productive. Lots of life style factors can cause this. But a true professional can play and invent , no matter the mood.
DZ is so right. I remember when I first discovered the patterns of same notes of the strings in not only the pentatonic but all scales/modes have some sort of pattern so you can go all over the neck. Makes learning the notes a lot easier too. It was life changing.
I've been playing 53 years and still watch videos by other guitarists. I learn something every time. I was four years into it (long before the days of the Internet), before the fretboard suddenly opened up to me one morning, and I saw patterns of notes all over the neck. After that I knew I could now start to PLAY.
This was super useful. I haven't played for a few years and kinda getting into it again, and I constantly get stuck in the same "section" of the neck. It's great with these simple things to get into it again
I suck at lead playing and I don't know shit about music theory. All I've done is spent the last decade learning every chord in the book. I really should learn music theory to understand what that stuff means. I have my penatonic scales and for example an Am triad because of Jimmy Page but that's the extent of my knowledge. I'm the bomb on acoustic, but when I pick up my Strat I just jump to the 12th fret and just go up and down the strings with my index and ring finger, throw in a couple of bends and pretend that I know what I'm doing lol.
same ive been playing for a bit over a year and I learned a bunch of chords and certain scales but I really wish I just started it all off with learning the music theory behind it.
Check out Fretboard Logic. It is everything I wish I had when I started playing guitar in regard to learning theory and how the fretboard works. If you know how to do movable open chords then you can learn how each of the 5 pentatonic and eventually diatonic patterns applies to each chord shape, as well as the three octave scales that are being mentioned here.
One thing that really helped me open up my lead playing (not that it's particularly great right now) was learning all the pentatonic shapes and "following" the rhythm guitarist's location on the neck with regard to the shapes I was focusing on. IE if we're in Amaj/F#min and the rhythm guitarist is playing a lot of chords around the 7th and 9th frets, I'll focus on the 3rd shape (7 9 7 9 7 9 6 9 7 10 7 9) (sorry that's so ugly) and then "reach out" into the neighboring shapes for emphasis/play a central lick in the 3rd shape and then jump up to, say, the 5th shape and mirror it there (this helps because then you're hitting different scale degrees in different orders, so the motion feels/sounds similar but the tonality is different). but if learning all your pentatonics is step 1/10 to being a good soloist, the stuff I'm doing can't be more than step 1.5/10 lmao
Jacob Reece Well if you want to be like me who just plays for the sake of enjoyment then I highly recommend just picking out guitar instrumental songs that you like and play the heck out of it. I have played for about 1.5 years seriously (Though I started playing 4 years ago excluding the 1.5 years of serious dedicated playing, I just learned 1-2 song over the year and played for 10 min in a week or just never played for a year or so). I still have no idea anything outside of major chords and some notes on the fretboard but i still am decent at playing guitar solos although not those hardcore sweep picking stuff. You can take my advisw for a grain of salt I will post a link for some of my samples video which can only be viewed through the link and if you find it decent enough try doing what I did . Note :- I play guitar as a hobby and I really love playing it , I have no interest being a musician. ruclips.net/video/g1pqhd0onRU/видео.html Every gear used in the video amounts to less than $150 so sorry for the poor quality .
Loving your work and generosity of spirit Mr Zappa.

it's been 5 years, did you ever get out of the box?

Such a simple change of thinking, yet it's so elegant and effective. I love the way this guy perceives music

play for 8 years , still find this super helpful
I play 20, this is enlightening. Play diagonally... what a master...

50 years here...ditto.
Dweezil Zappa IS THE MAN!
Vincent Talbot-Asselin You should check out his dad if you haven't yet, that guy WAS AWESOME.
Why has nobody explained this to me before? Makes so much sense. Can't wait to start practicing.
Now why can't all tutorials be that helpful :) Nice one, thank you.

holy shit this was amazing yet so simple! its motivating me to start learning again thanks
Damn, this helps, thank you Zappa
Dweezil Zappa and Steve Carell are converging into a singularity which will bring a lasting peace to the Universe. Good lesson too.
i didn't get this until years after i started playing. very important vid for young musicians
I love this.. my mind is expanding!
Great video and... such a nice SG
love these dweezil vids keep it uppppp
I just learned more in 3 minutes than i have in 20 years learning playing the guitar....shit
Feel the intervals.
Can't get over how much he looks like his dad.
this guy is a chad
Man so helpful!
I'm not a fan of his or his dad's music(I prefer beefheart) but he seems like a really stand-up dude. Pretty informative too.

Dweez is more like it.
its a whole new world"
What model SG is that?
Is he in anyway related to Frank Zappa?
Victor L he’s franks son
Victor L Yep that's his father.
Fucking hell 🙄🙄🙄
hes exactly looks like Frank...
Dweezil has some of the weirdest licks
Aren't these just simple arpeggios?
Well, if you want to get nerdy about it a pentatonic scale is basically a m11 or Maj6/9 arpeggio anyway.
I'm guessing he shaves his arms?
