Agreed! I can add that ive met him during a zappa plays zappa in gothenburg sweden and hes a humble guy that patiently signed and shook hands with fans all evening. Epic guitar duel with Mattias IA Eklund that night as a finale too. An honor to meet Dweez.
Can I just say "thank you" to DZ for this. This lesson is incredibly generous and worded in a very comprehensive manner. Personally, it's going to be invaluable to me. Other YT tutors take note: there are loads of beginners style tutorials on YT that are great and there are, seemingly, a preponderance of tutorials aimed at the more accomplished player (Rick Beato anyone). However, I have found tutorials for the reasonably advanced intermediate players (those of use, self taught, who have been playing and gigging for years, with "some" chops and "some" theory but, as DZ points out, have "hit a wall") are a little like hen's teeth. This is how it should be done. This is how it should be shown. This is how it should be explained and contextualised and this is how it should be worded. Believe me, it's difficult to access tutors for certain levels of playing if you don't live in a City. YT is a Godsend in this respect and this tutorial hits the nail right on the head! Thanks again. BTW: I went to see Zappa Plays Zappa in Manchester 18 months, or so, ago. Absolutely great. If you're a fan of his Dad's music and haven't been to see DZ's band, I'd strongly recommend you catch them if you can..... "I know you'll be surprised!".
It’s been so hard to find extremely effective lessons like this one at the “advanced intermediate” level, or whatever you want to call it. Pleasantly surprised to see it come from someone like Dweezil who’s so far beyond the player he’s catering too. He hit the mark, ab to play for like 6 hours now.
We love Reverb ... We love Frank ... and we love Dweezil too ... I for one am on your side sir. YOU are the new Mr. Zappa! Also thanks for sharing the inspiration & techniques
If you love these, you may like a couple recordings I uploaded from his Choice Cuts concert here a couple months ago. I think I only have 3 or 4 up so far with a few more to come, but feel free to check them out. You may have to scroll down 5 or 6 videos to find them. Enjoy.
That guitar is the most beautiful instrument I have ever seen in my entire life. My hunger for guitar has just been multiplied by 10 just by glimpsing this masterpiece
I'd be curious to see what you think of Joe Satriani's "ChromeBoy" Ibanez guitar. I'm assuming your taste is for legacy instruments, so you won't like Satch's instrument one iota.
Daniel Verberne it’s been two years since I commented on this post, so my taste for both instruments and music has completely evolved. That guitar, while still beautiful, no longer is something I would buy. Joe Satriani’s guitars are wonderful as well, but they don’t fit my play style. I play a variety of genres of music, but most of it is based in blues or jazz or sometimes a fusion of the two
In 1984 I was in the same room with this guy but I was really dumb back than. I snuck in the concert and was looking for free beer and chicks. I'm blown away buy what squared away great guy he is.
How in the hell is Dweezil almost 50? He's supposed to be, like, 24!!! He's only four years younger than Frank was when he died. Where has the time gone? Jaysus....
Seeing Dweezil with grey hairs is so odd, as I always picture him as the young, slightly flamboyant member of the family, showing off his chest from a baggy, open shirt and a great mop of thick black hair.
He's in great shape for his age though, so hopefully we get more years out of him than his father. Poor old Frank was taken far too young (fuck cancer)
He's been a very busy man. BTW, if you manage to wade through this lengthy comment, you may like what you find near the end of it...or you may not...or if you don't like reading, just scroll down to it and find out. Anyway, I remember channel surfing and finding when he was hawking the Zappa Plays Zappa DVD/CD set on PBS. Of course, being Frank's all-time biggest fan, I couldn't help but check it out, just guessing from the program's synopsis that the Zappa Family Trust was releasing a box set or something like that. Boy, was I ever wrong! And when he announced during the concert that HE had "taken two years off to learn some of this music," I thought he was being disingenuous, having really took more like twice that time to learn the titles they were playing! But after watching the show, then buying the set, I was DYING to see them live...and I did, a couple of years later, after all but Dweezil and Scheila had left the band...and they were the opening act for Return to Forever. Now don't get me wrong, I've dug Return to Forever since it's original trio included John McLaughlin, but I loved The Zappa Plays Zappa band even more, and it was kind of disappointing that night. Part of that was because nearly all of the band was different and may not have had enough rehearsal to play a lot of what they did on the concert box set, but let's face it; trying to do all o' THAT set list without Napoleon Murphy Brock, Steve Vai, and Terry Bozzio is a pretty tall order. And since I had won the tickets by calling in to the local radio station, I really couldn't complain. But then... Okay, I'll skip over the chunk of time where his two younger siblings became shockingly greedy and jealous, then filed a "cease and desist" lawsuit to prevent Dweezil from playing any of Frank's music, or even...get this...or even use the name, Zappa! Sighhhhhhh...but I digress... Fast forward a couple of years and an accord was reached, and Dweezil can tour with Frank's music again, asking that we, his fans, forgive and forget...and THEN...joy of JOYS!!! Dweezil and the band came down here to Ft Lauderdale, to a tiny venue with his Choice Cuts Tour, maybe just two months ago!! And THIS time there was no opener, just two AMAZING hours of not only Frank's music, but played in a different and VERY exciting way! And here's where we find out what he was doing with all that time between lawsuits. He and the band had transcribed LIVE VERSIONS of every FZ title you could ever want to see them play! Yet again, Dweezil surrounded himself with an incredibly talented band, went through a tiny percentage of his dad's live recordings from the family vault, added some bootlegs too, and played over two hours of "your favorite FZ songs that you've never heard before," hence, the name of the tour is "Choice Cuts"! So...one more small thing... I did manage to record a few numbers with my phone and upload them to my RUclips account. I think I've only got 3 or 4 up so far, and they ARE cell phone recordings, so don't expect TOO much, but they're there if anyone wants to check them out. Andy is one of them, and although Valley Girl isn't one of my favorites, I love THIS version because Dweezil had arranged for a young vocalist from the local School of Rock to come up onstage and perform it with them!! Also, I couldn't get much of this one drummer because of where I was standing, but another youngster from the audience got himself invited up there to play drums on Muffin Man! Actually, I suspect it was prearranged, and that the kid was also a School of Rock student, but who cares? So...I do have 3 or 4 more songs from that night to upload soon, so if you like the ones I've already got on the channel, you can sub the channel to receive the notifications for the next uploads if you like, and then unsub after you've seen them if you want. There are also, like five or six uploads of my cover band, Velocity in there too. Just some Metal, Grunge, etc. Cheers, and if you do watch Dweezil's songs from that night, ENJOY!!!
Holy Shit Dweezil !! You Make it look so easy !! I've Been a Fan of your Fathers Music Since 1966 !!!! Attended Every New York Area Show !! Especially "Halloween" s !!! Fond Memories !!!!
Beautiful Deluxe. Mine has a Bigsby and no pickguard. We both have the pickups moved away from the bridge and right against the neck. I have also seen a Deluxe with the pickups in the usual positions. Good video , thank you.
Thats how I learned to play. I conduct musical experiments by playing at different times and speeds while using different finger movements and playing styles until I created something that sounded familiar or good to me in a certain tuning.
Frank Gambale Speed picking book goes into the nuts and bolts of this type of picking which is part economy and part sweep picking. Really gives your playing a smooth flowing sound.
Great as always and with clean sound these should be played. This way even pentatonic scale is spicing up. And when he plays fast there are some kind of right hand muting I can hear.
Love Dweez and his dad. Played along to many of Franks tunes but never had a lesson in my life. 63 now, maybe I should start. Don't even know what platonic scales are.
Still distinctly remember trying to learning "Let's Talk About It" by recording the video off MTV and going frame by frame to see what Dweezil was playing. Christ was that really 30 years ago?!?! FML...
His pick tone still sucks.. I would say gambale is faster than Dweezil.. he taught at GIT? lol does that actually mean anything? A teaching stint @ Julliard or the Royal School of Music would mean something... I mean GIT? is that a joke?? Paul Gilbert taught there right out of high-school.. GIT is pretty much what RUclips is now. It's just a bunch of scales and arpeggios being taught at high speeds... lol "GIT".. hilarious
This it the prototype Gibson (not the original) but watch the video on them repairing the headstock. Holy shit man, it honestly looks like they put a new neck on it.
Not being a huge Frank / MOI fan, I've never known much about Dweezil other than his name, but man what a cool dude. Seems like a real "above average" human. I'd listen to him talk about changing oil in his car.........not a gay thing either.
I've met him a few times after his shows because he comes out and does lobby meet n greets like every time. Very cool, down to earth, approachable dude. The rest of the band as well are too. If you can catch him on a tour I suggest you go whether the music is familiar or not. You WILL be impressed by their musicianship if nothing else.
Daryl Gable played with Zappa Plays Zappa , and has many videos on this Most of the players call this Speed Picking ,or economy picking . Sweep Picking is really straight 2 octave arpeggios, which guys like Ron Thall play to death on every single second of every song
This totally+1. For me the biggest thing that bugs me about pentatonic licks are the same boring shape everyone plays. Also the fact people seem to think that only the key of A and E exist. I spice it up using MAJOR pentatonic licks vs the same ol' tired MINOR. Maybe throwing in a flat 5th or major 3rd so it's almost a hybrid between major and minor.

Not your average "son of". Here you have a truly gifted musician in his own right, with tons of knowledge to share. Cheers!
allrain felix patorious
allrain yep! I remember when he was taking lessons from Joe Satriani & Eddie Van Halen in the late late 70's.
Agreed! I can add that ive met him during a zappa plays zappa in gothenburg sweden and hes a humble guy that patiently signed and shook hands with fans all evening. Epic guitar duel with Mattias IA Eklund that night as a finale too. An honor to meet Dweez.
He looks and sounds like the love child of his dad and Steve Carrell.
Yes..I just commented about that... Ahmet is the 'son of' Monster Magnet.
Wow a famous guitar player that can actually explain and teach without being abstractly vague
Dweezil is the first person to make sweep picking interesting to me. I like how he incorporates it into his soloing in very small chunks.
It's fantastic the way he has inherited his fathers guitar playing genius. But with a lot of hard work and practice of course....!

Who else can claim Steve Vai ,Eddie Van Halen and Frank Zappa taught them how to play guitar , Dweezil has became a monster guitarist .
Isn’t he terrible? Given his teachers he should be way better than he is.
One of the coolest repackagings of the pentatonic I've heard! Almost gives it an different sound all together the way you play it!
Although I don't personally care for Dweezil's music, I LOVE these videos. Super informative and casual with some very interesting tips. A+.
We love Reverb ... We love Frank ... and we love Dweezil too ... I for one am on your side sir. YOU are the new Mr. Zappa! Also thanks for sharing the inspiration & techniques
Love the Frank Gambale name drop. Heard Dweezil mention him YEARS ago, so grateful.
I love these Dweez videos.
dweez is what I'm talking about
He's a great teacher.

Dweezil is way underated! His name needs shouting from the roof tops. Such a great teacher too!
If you get a chance to see Dweezil play live, I'd highly recommend going. He does a great job, and his band is really good.
hes such a good teacher!!!!! i could listen to him all day omg
Dweezil - your Dad would be proud. That the highest complement I can pay. :D Thanks for sharing YOUR gift. :D
I've seen live Dweezil twice. He would make his dad proud because he tears it the fuck up.
l'm SO PROUD of this guy!! ....brings tears to my eyes! Comin to see ya in a few days Dweez!
That guitar is the most beautiful instrument I have ever seen in my entire life. My hunger for guitar has just been multiplied by 10 just by glimpsing this masterpiece
Looks like his dad's guitar, maybe with some mods from when Frank used it - see it in some old FZ live clips

Man, I love the Roxy SG.
Dweezil is such a nice dude. Damn, your dad must be proud up there. I loved that intro pentatonic lick sounded so shredded! Will learn ASAP! Thanks!
Oh hey now, varying pentatonic riff tips. That's the heart of rock and roll right there boyo.
Holy Shit Dweezil !!
You Make it look so easy !!
I've Been a Fan of your Fathers Music Since 1966 !!!!
Attended Every New York Area Show !! Especially "Halloween" s !!! Fond Memories !!!!
Great perspective and great tone!
Phil Heesen III not sure if I'm crazy but natural finish guitars often sound better to me.
Yep, Think-Outside-The-Box... Simple concepts like this go along way. Good video!!
Man, this channel is pure gold!
Loved meeting Dweezil at NAMM - great video!
Love quick & dirty lessons like this. More, please!
Beautiful Deluxe. Mine has a Bigsby and no pickguard. We both have the pickups moved away from the bridge and right against the neck. I have also seen a Deluxe with the pickups in the usual positions.
Good video , thank you.
It's a Frank Zappa Roxy SG. Pretty rare.
I subscribe to this and any other channel that has Dweezil talking and teaching guitar.
Dweezil is cool and a gentleman, and he plays circles around his dad.
Thanks Dweezil. The kids needs this knowledge and the spirit of music.😍
Thats how I learned to play. I conduct musical experiments by playing at different times and speeds while using different finger movements and playing styles until I created something that sounded familiar or good to me in a certain tuning.
Great lesson on the penta, heck some classic guitar legends have built their career on the penta.. 🤓
Such an awesome player and great teacher!
Frank Gambale Speed picking book goes into the nuts and bolts of this type of picking which is part economy and part sweep picking. Really gives your playing a smooth flowing sound.
Towards the end where he hammers on the pattern, without picking it almost morphs into a like B3-ish organ tone for half a second. Very cool.
You're an awesome guitarist and teacher. Loved your Dad, bro.
Btw. Miles Davis hated flat 5's.
I guess Miles didn't like sounding too bluesy
Great idea. Thanks Reverb and Dweezil
Great as always and with clean sound these should be played. This way even pentatonic scale is spicing up.

thanks Dweezil ....handy bit of knowledge for me mate. good onya
dweezil is a legend love these videos, keep em coming
I always learn so much from this guy.
He's a wizard and a great teacher
Amazing guy, I felt like he was humbled to meet me.
the tone on that SG, lord!
Really great idea, definitely going to practice this!
Cool! Would make a nice sweep picking exercise! Thank You
I can't get past how pristine that SG is
For me this guy has way better economy pick tone than Gambale and others. When Gambale picks it's sounds like a scratching chalkboard
Jamie Rockford yeah, true...
James Rockford nah, Franks a monster in his own right and he taught at GIT for years. To each his own, I suppose.
James Rockford Can I call you Jaimie?
you can call me whatever you want
wondering if the filming of this session was pre or post-headstock break ?
the filming, not the air date.
Post
I think this is a different guitar. Dweezil's #1 guitar has some sort of strange EMG looking humbucker neck pickup which this one doesn't have.
oh, yea you could be right. I just saw the white headstock and assumed it was the same but He definitely could have two with the mismatch headstock
This it the prototype Gibson (not the original) but watch the video on them repairing the headstock. Holy shit man, it honestly looks like they put a new neck on it.
Maple neck SG? Very interesting guitar he's got here. Gorgeous.
Steve Vai tutored him. Dweezil is soooo good.
Not being a huge Frank / MOI fan, I've never known much about Dweezil other than his name, but man what a cool dude. Seems like a real "above average" human. I'd listen to him talk about changing oil in his car.........not a gay thing either.
rubbersole79 check out his 91' album 'confessions of a deprived youth' see what you think, geezer can fucking shred..
I've met him a few times after his shows because he comes out and does lobby meet n greets like every time. Very cool, down to earth, approachable dude. The rest of the band as well are too. If you can catch him on a tour I suggest you go whether the music is familiar or not. You WILL be impressed by their musicianship if nothing else.
great teacher...
the timing is key
When did Dweezil start waxing?
Very good lesson.
This is very educational.
dude's been working out
One amazing SG!
Wow! The instrument is truly bottomless.
Beautiful guitar
What a great lesson. Thank you, god bless.
Very nice!!!
That was really cool.
Thank You! Dweezil😎❤️🔥
Daryl Gable played with Zappa Plays Zappa , and has many videos on this

Sweep Picking is really straight 2 octave arpeggios, which guys like Ron Thall play to death on every single second of every song
Great teacher
great lesson
it’d be awesome if u guys do a INXS riffs video, cheers
Cool lesson
the apple is still on the tree.
When all you do is play your dads music, there is no surprise.
If only I had a few lessons from him when I started
Damn. Another alien Pentatonic!!!!
What a gorgeous SG. A Maestro I guess?
Great player as well as a great teacher
This totally+1. For me the biggest thing that bugs me about pentatonic licks are the same boring shape everyone plays. Also the fact people seem to think that only the key of A and E exist. I spice it up using MAJOR pentatonic licks vs the same ol' tired MINOR. Maybe throwing in a flat 5th or major 3rd so it's almost a hybrid between major and minor.
Hes awsome i love his dad and him . guitar ledgends
And i have a gibson flying v but i really want an sg like yours. Where can i find the sg you have mr zappa?
You can't change that guitar for a SG.. Are two totally different guitars...
God I love this guy.
Brilliant. How come no one taught me this 30 years ago?
Esse cara é fantástico! Se lascar, viu! 💙
So smooth
Dweezil is a bad ass
Absolutely brilliant!!!
The piano makes so much more sense to me. Each key has its own note. So many redundances on the guitar. So many different paths to play out the same thing.
Thank you.
Reminds me of stuff on Yes's first album
Awesome
Thanks. Where do I give up?
God damn it! Sometimes you just need someone to tell you these things.
I see two pickup switches on the SG - are those added. And the whammy, I assume that is a custom addition as well? Just asking because I am not familiar with them, but love the sound.
The switches are for coil splitting and phase switching
he's using the Roxy SG that Frank made famous.
I thought the arm on the tremelo of my roxy was backwards, it felt odd to play it so i searched dweezil's sg and my arm is mounted in reverse lol
Genius
Gold Thanks
Pentatonic scales have 5 notes. You can Take the two Japanese Pentatonic scales and overlay them to create a Septatonic scale. Should have one string with Two and one with three, or a third with one? It is important to emphasize each five note set.
I didn't realize Patrick Dempsey was so good at guitar.
