It was most definitely NOT burned at Miami Pop. Jimi did NOT burn any guitars at Miami Pop. In fact there are only THREE confirmed and independently corroborated venues where Jimi burned a guitar. The LAST time Jimi ever burned a guitar onstage was Sunday August 13 at the Ambassador Hotel in Washington DC. This burning is corroborated by several witnesses and photographic evidence. If anyone else tries to tell you they saw Jimi burn a guitar at any other show they hallucinated it. Dweezil's guitar either came from the Astoria or the Ambassador. But it was not burned in Miami on May 18, 1968.
@@jazmaan what about the shoulder strap mounts? This guitar in this video doesn't have the needed anchor for an upside-down play style. I didn't even see where it would have been removed.

I started playing in 1976 after I heard All Along the Watchtower by Jimi and I still have that Guitar Player magazine my mother bought me Frank Zappa and that Strat on the cover! @@jwjeffrey You’re right. He did the Monterey pop festival in 67 and that was when he started to gain fame in the U.S. Still, what a short time and what a crazy impact he had.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Dweezil a couple times at NAMM shows, and he is super kind and gracious! Also saw his father in concert two times, and that was incredible!!!
Purist gear-head debates aside, what a great piece on a guitar with so much history. I also appreciate the friendly, respectful exchange between two professionals without a lot of ego involved.
Reading the comments below is amusing. They are not touting the value of the instrument they are talking about the history of what it has gone through. The body is original and since it doesn't appear that Dweezil is trying to sell it but rather celebrating it's heritage and using it this is pretty cool in my book.
Right. People are equating money value with historical value, which in turn effects its money value. This is such a common thing for old guitars from legendary players. They get destroyed over time and so people refurbish them. The people who are making fun of this guitar are probably people who who would be more impressed with a guitar with a Kaoss pad built in than a relic of a legendary guitarist. I can stuff what ever gizmos into my guitar any time, but I will never have a guitar built from the remnants of Jimi Hendrixs guitar that he SET ON FIRE in one of the most iconic performances of all time.
I had in my hands a guitar Hendrix played. For sale at Wurlitzer music store in Boston. Had a certificate with it. When your a musician trying to get by. Any amount of money is a lot. Plus my focus was not to sell it and make a profit. That was I think mid 70's. I do remember it was a amazing deal! Life goes on.
dweezil is an extremely underrated guitar player, ive seen him live a few times and he puts everything into his shows and his guitar playing is phenomenal. Frank too
dweez had steve vai as his first real guitar teacher well beside frank ... i really wish they wouldnt have rebuilt the jimi guitar... some things are better left alone ...... any one know if the jimi guitar ever sold? god i hope they saved the old neck and such......
+Rusty Nails It really isn't even a 'Jimi guitar' it's a swap over cheapie Hendrix set fire too at the end of a gig . I agree would have been more impressive left as was after Jimi had trashed it , now it's nothing in my opinion ....:-(
+Quantum Leep All of Jimi's Strats were Fender, the body in this video is definitely a Fender sunburst, it was his guitar of choice for everything including destruction, I agree it should have been left alone for display only. After Jimi burned that first Strat at Monterey, somebody got a big hunk of the body, and put it on display at a local record store here shortly after for a few days.
+Johngonefishin 'All Fenders' yes, but not all his actual playing guitar it is well documented that Hendrix switched to a different guitar, albeit a Fender, before destroying it , that's what you have here . Still of significance but barely due to it being re built IMO .......
Pretty cool stuff and story. Dweezil seems like such a down to earth cool guy. I am sure if his dad was still here, he would totally be so proud of his son.
dweezil zappa is the coolest rock kid on the planet theres nothing about him hes not up his own arse or poncing off his dad he can play prob as good as vai hats off to ya
Vai, has been around him since he was a baby, So you know he picked up a lot of chops from him... And having Frank as a dad probably helped a bit too...:)
Agreed. No negative comments apply. Just the fact that it's lineage has seen so many astonishing players. Yes, it's sad it's not a Jimi original fit-out, but just the same, it was his guitar. I'd just like to see it in person. And Frank Zappa would be proud to know his son has grown to be such a visibly down-to-earth man, and obviously reveres his Dad. We all should be so lucky.
@DrPsychedelic He didn´t burn a guitar at the MPF, and the Monterey and Astoria Strats are different ones... So I can´t imagine that this is an actual Hendrix guitar
I'd just like to add that I inherited from my brother a vintage Scotch Magic Transparent tape dispenser. I replaced the tape roll to get it back to it's original specs.
Bro I think you got a fugazi cuz I GOT that same dispenser with the original tape but I dont play with it cuz of sentimental value and stuff like that you know.

Good thing Al was out inventing the internet or this conversation could not take place.
Had the privilege to meet Dweezil and his band years ago at their Dweezilla summer camp. Truly awesome experience. This guy perfectly nailed his fathers work.
Thanks to DZ for bringing it in. Why the haters? 2 people talking about a guitar that passed through the hands and was played by some titanic players; yes, some new parts, not selling the guitar to anybody, and not hiding anything, just showing off some gear. I really like how he and Frank and a bunch of other people played this guitar, modified it and just didn't put it in a case somewhere. If anyone else had it they would just throw it in a case like it's some artifact of God. I think most musicians would rather see their instruments played over displayed.
They didn't do that becAuse it is now not an artefact. it might have been once, when it was burned and fucked up, but now it is just a guitar and all you can do with is play it.

Let me get this straight so that very guitar has been played and burned by Hendrix before being played by frank Zappa then satriani and Steve vai. Holy fucking shit
I respect the hell out of Dweezil Zappa because how much he respects his dad's music. Not riding his dad's coat tails but keep zappa music alive. PS: He's a great player.
Then you'd be mistaken...Hendrix was famous for setting his guitar on fire and to have the wood body that was burned is the whole thing right there. This item is worth over 100,000 dollars and it would sell immediately at any auction. Dweezil will never part with it since his Dad left him millions in addition to the millions he's made on his own.
I just Googled that cover of Guitar Player Magazine that he was talking about. Man, Frank was a hairy beast! I never really got into his music that much. He was a fabulous musician and guitarist, but his music was almost like comedy. Like Weird Al" Yankovic. Songs like Stinkfoot, Muffin Man, Foamy Soaky, Drums Are Too Noisy and Dog Breath, in the Year of the Plague are good examples of his humorous lyrics and content. But if you listen to the actual music, it is so well composed and his guitar skills are legendary. A man ahead of his time.
I was listening to Frank's music for years before I saw him live, from the first minute he started playing it was like a revelation, I was totally blown away by his playing. That's one of my favorite concert memories.
@@badm.d he did? When? Where? You never heard him on the radio. And you sure as hell didnt see him front and center playing a guitar, like all the other big names. Never happened.
@@Woggerdogg He did. He was on Warner's label until he established his own. He was very contrarian and as the 70's came to a close, he went from being a capitalist Libertarian to a reactionary Democrat. Listen to Broadway the Hardway. That's about his last album to receive airplay and "When the Lie's So Big" basically buried him. Frank didn't give a shit. He had gone head first into radical composing by the mid 70's and that was really his thing, he was conducting and arranging radical progressive orchestral music until the day he died of pancreatic cancer. Sheik Yerbouti(Shake Your Booty) was his "Fuck you disco record." By the early 80's he was more interested in politics and he was burned out on trying to run a band- remember Frank developed Mark Bolan and Steve Vai- he had become used to getting that caliber of player. He detested others drug use and he detested the politics and the excess. For a while there, very briefly(few years) Dweezil and Ahmed had a band together and they actually put out more "rawhk" music than Frank did. Frank did rock records up until Jazz from Hell but by that time his heart was in composing. Dancing Fool off Sheik Yerbouti received a lot of air play, Montana off the "Mothers of Invention" album received airplay. Because the rating system Tipper Gore was hustling was so unpopular, "Mothers of Prevention" even received airplay in the 80's. Civilization Phase III received airplay, though I think if memory is right, Frank was gone by the release... Civilization Phase III was even advertised in Marvel and DC Comic books, KRock played selections, the Ocean City MD station that had Don and Mike played Civ Ph3, the DC studio Imus and Liddy were on played Civilization Phase III. Frank smoked like a chimney and he died from prostate cancer- he enjoyed fucking with people to the end. He rarely gave interviews but some vapid woman from NPR commented on his poor health and his still smoking and he said live on air "I'm not sure if you've ever had a cigarette before but you don't smoke them out of your sphincter..."
I took my daughter to see Dweezil and the mothers in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK about 5 years ago. Her first taste of what a proper band is about, Frank was there in Virtuality. Amazing night.
@Knobcore Sorry, had that guitar been left untouched, burn marks and all, from that infamous/historical performance it would be FAR more valuable to a collector than it is after Frank and his son took it apart and replaced everything. You simply don't understand that type of industry. Nobody's talking about Zappa's abilities, that has zero to do with anything.
What a super well balanced young man, i realize that this is 10 years old but still today he is most likely 10 years wiser. +Mr. Lowery Jimmy used dosens & dosens of strats that he burned on his many gigs and smashed them to. Those guitars had both maple and rosewood necks The ones that got iconic were the ones that got sacrificed on videorecordings.
+Mr. Lowery .... Yes, the Monterey Pop Festival was recorded ... but that was not the festival mentioned. It was the Miami Pop Festival where Jimi used this guitar.
So glad to hear Dweezil refer to him as 'dad' repeatedly instead of Frank. I know he doesn't mean any disrespect to his father but it's good to hear him say dad
Zappa truly was the only man with such perfectionism (and balls) to modify Hendrix's guitar. . . and you can really picture him saying: "but it sounds better now."
The Zappa plays Zappa DVD is terrific, the original lineup that features Napoleon Brock Murphy and cameos by Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio; well worth adding to your collection if not only to hear Dweezil play the solo on Inca Roads

Probably my first contact with Jimmy and Bob., rock sound could not get any better than 'all along the watchtower'..could it ? The guitar I'm not sure about.
Notice while holding the gitfiddle, Dweezel had his fingers in a chord position! That tells you he's a guitar player! Whenever I pick up my guitar, my fingers naturally form a chord while handling it!
I worked in a guitar store during the mid to late 70's and we sold Guitar Player magazine. I clearly remember that issue with this guitar on the cover. I seem to remember the article saying that Hendix had poured lighter fluid on the guitar and set first to it. Unless I’m getting my stories mixed up.

Hey, good to see you Dweezil. Your dad was a genius who thought of everything, expressed in his music. I just want to say I had the most amazing deep dream in which Frank Zappa appeared and he was totally at peace. That was until my military m8 turned up to turn the vivid vision into unrest. That was one of two dreams in which your Father and I conversed on such a deep and peaceful level. So whether you believe in the afterlife or not, I know he's happy where he is.

Stupidity set in and I lost my nerve to talk to him for fear of looking stupid. After hearing this video, I wish I had. He does seem like an awesome guy.
To the people complaining that only the body is original: Did you think they would just refret it until the fingerboard was a thousandth of an inch thick? Frets don't last very long when you've got Steve Vai, Frank Zappa, or Dweezil Zappa playing. Hell, even I can wear out a set of jumbo nickel silver frets in about 5 years, and I'm not good at all.

When I was young we'd drop acid and listen to Jimi for hours. The acid was the car but Jimi was the driver. The deepest part of my psyche- what I am- is something Jimi brought me to. The power he created went through me like he was some sort of God. I was brought up religous but Jimi gave me my true spirituality.
Jimi seemed to be very generous with his guitars. Al Kooper tells the story about when he was admiring Hendrix's strat while they were recording Electric Ladyland. Jimi tried to give him the guitar then, but Kooper said he couldn't take another guy's guitar. Hendrix had it delivered to Kooper's house the next day.
Couldn’t even strum it. Not even one pick of a string, couldn’t have even scuff against the god damn strings for us. This whole time I waited patiently to hear the sound this masterpiece can produce. And I was presented with nothing other than wasted time.

Once I die, everyone will go crazy trying to get hold of my works. Head Stone will read as,"She died with both ears intact." My painting are already priceless.
I almost wish they'd just give it away to a great and responsible guitarist on a couple of conditions 1. He would have to carve his name into the body of the guitar (small font) 2. After 5 years he must give it away to another guitarist he finds good and somwhat responsible whom will do the same. 3. He isn't allowed to just sell it. To me the thought of a guitar existing 50 years from now that would be known for having been played by some of the best guitarists ever is just cool. The sad thing is that this guitar will just be bought by a rich collector and then forgotten in a vault.
I know it seems strange to rebuild the guitar, but keep in mind when the guitar was given to Frank, it wasn't playable, and rather than leave the bones of guitar lying around like a useless corpse, he used what he could to make a guitar that could do what it was supposed to do, make music. I would be happy just to have the wood body and nothing, it's now been used to make amazing music by many amazing guitarists over many decades instead of being just a chunk of burnt wood Jimi Hendrix touched once.
Yeah, I agree, this guitar has history. It was played and then burnt by Jimi Hendrix a great rock icon, who gave it to another rock icon who decided to rebuild it and make great music on it, who gave it to his son who is an excellent guitar player who still uses it to play excellent music. That seems like the real deal to me, it's a living thing not a relic.
Good point you make. Frank had no way of knowing Hendrix would be dead within a couple of years and he could have instantly added two zeroes to the value of that burned out husk. But hey, a guitar played by Frank AND Jimi (and even Dweezil) would be an absolute treasure to me. This IS an historic guitar.
Trigger: And that's what I've done. Maintained it for 20 years. This old broom's had 17 new heads and 14 new handles in its time. Sid: How the hell can it be the same bloody broom then? Trigger: There's the picture. What more proof do you need?
Modify? Funny way of thinking about it. He did 'modify' it, but the other option was putting in his fire place. Hendrix had burnt and demolished it that evening. It was a heap of trash when it was given to Zappa.
Not a bad idea repainting the Mona Lisa. Maybe add a little character to the face. You know the painting is just so old fashioned. What's all the fuss about anyway and no electronics. I once tried to look her up on face book and apparently she didn't even have an account. What a nobody.
Different modes anyway, and the metaphor is off. The guitar is the paintbrush. The song is the painting. People 'repaint' songs all the time. What Zappa has done here is rebuild a nonfunctional paintbrush; one not valued because of its qualities, but simply because a certain person held it.

Reminds me of the old joke about a farmer who points to an axe in the corner of the barn and says, "That's the best axe I ever had - it's lasted 30 years... Mind you, in that time it's had two new handles and three new heads!"
I've got George Washington's musket. The stock, barrel and lock works have all been replaced but the front sight is original.

There's definitely a Buddhist teaching on emptiness in there somewhere 😉
In the UK we call it a "Triggers Broom".. from a comedy show, Only fools and horses 😊
I started playing in 1976 after I heard All Along the Watchtower by Jimi and I still have that Guitar Player magazine my mother bought me Frank Zappa and that Strat on the cover! Just last week I was wondering what had happened to that Guitar and stumbled across this video. Dweezil and Norm thank you for posting this video, it's reassuring to know that Dweezil has it.
To understand Jimi’s impact on music you have to realize he was popular in America for only about two years before he died.
Are you experience was release in 1967,Jimi died September 18, 1970 he as popular 3 years.
All this generation has is xxxtentascion and lil peep😂

I have had the pleasure of meeting Dweezil a couple times at NAMM shows, and he is super kind and gracious! Also saw his father in concert two times, and that was incredible!!!
Purist gear-head debates aside, what a great piece on a guitar with so much history. I also appreciate the friendly, respectful exchange between two professionals without a lot of ego involved.
Right Norm will make a buck off it sooner or later....
Reading the comments below is amusing. They are not touting the value of the instrument they are talking about the history of what it has gone through. The body is original and since it doesn't appear that Dweezil is trying to sell it but rather celebrating it's heritage and using it this is pretty cool in my book.
The fact that this thing was in the room when Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix had a conversation is enough to do a full documentary on it
Right? And even after the resto it was played by some great guitarists.
Simpler answer: maybe they're both right handed? 🤗

Hello, saw this guitar in Denmark st about 20 years ago as it was being auctioned off. Good to see that its still un good hands.
I've seen Dweezil a couple times playing his dad's music and he was amazing. He's also a super nice guy to fans. I am glad to have met him.
dweezil is an extremely underrated guitar player, ive seen him live a few times and he puts everything into his shows and his guitar playing is phenomenal. Frank too
dweez had steve vai as his first real guitar teacher
well beside frank ...
i really wish they wouldnt have rebuilt the jimi guitar...
some things are better left alone ......
any one know if the jimi guitar ever sold?
god i hope they saved the old neck and such......
Frank too? LOL
I idolized Jimi Hendrix since I was 13 or 14 years old. He was truly one-of-a-kind a true virtuoso.
I LOVE Frank Zappa and I will never forget him. May he rest in peace.
My dad was at the Miami Pop Festival. He stills talks to this day about seeing Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa!
Misisipi Mike Wolf I know your post was 2 years ago but I have a question did Jimmy burn his guitar at that festival hope you can answer my question

ROTFLMAO. HEY, TELL Deeezil Zappa, to tell his Dad thanks for going before the Senate to fight for out freedom of speech. John Denver too. oops almost forgot the dude from Twisted Sister too. Without those guys all albums would come with rating stickers. Oh... I love the album Frank made all with no lyric. That's showing those asses.
@@CarolynDenison I probably need to point out Mr. Zappa has passed as well as Mr. Denver. Frank due to cancer, John due to bad aeronautical design.
A big thanks does indeed need to go out to the very intelligent and well spoken Mr. Zappa as he engaged in a battle of wits with the unarmed Tipper Gore. Good thing Al was out inventing the internet or this conversation could not take place.
Had the privilege to meet Dweezil and his band years ago at their Dweezilla summer camp. Truly awesome experience. This guy perfectly nailed his fathers work.
Can’t be an easy task!?
Thanks to DZ for bringing it in. Why the haters? 2 people talking about a guitar that passed through the hands and was played by some titanic players; yes, some new parts, not selling the guitar to anybody, and not hiding anything, just showing off some gear. Does it raise Norm's profile (and I'm not particularly familiar w/the shop)?; yes - so what. Is Dweezil a great musician himself; yes - though I've only seen him and band once. Thanks to both of you/them for recording this. Me, I'll find another outlet for my depression and anger.

The Frank aspect is what makes this guitar a Holy Grail item of historical significance to the guitar aficionado, IMHO.
Yeah, even though 95% of people have no clue who Frank Zappa is but everyone knows who jimi fucking Hendrix is. What a moronic comment.
LOVE you Dweezil ... thanks for this memorabilia .... Love Frank and Jimi !!!
I really like how he and Frank and a bunch of other people played this guitar, modified it and just didn't put it in a case somewhere. If anyone else had it they would just throw it in a case like it's some artifact of God. I think most musicians would rather see their instruments played over displayed.
They didn't do that becAuse it is now not an artefact. it might have been once, when it was burned and fucked up, but now it is just a guitar and all you can do with is play it.
x x and before that, all it was was a guitar that you could play. That's what a guitar is meant for.. I personally don't buy guitars just to stare at them like a dumbass.
Andrew Teller Why did Jimi burn it then?
@@Neilhoh3 I've built a business on people who think like you do. That guitar with the provenance it has would sell for over $100,000 at any music auction. Talk to experts man...Thinking for yourself is going to get you in trouble.

Then you'd be mistaken...Hendrix was famous for setting his guitar on fire and to have the wood body that was burned is the whole thing right there. Dweezil Zappa is a down to earth, super cool guy and a terrific musician in his own rite. Very cool piece of history he just shared with us.
And then Primus comes in.
A complete fraud if you ask me .
Jimi: You can have this guitar Frank. I set it on fire but it might still play.

THE BEST CREATIVE GUITARIST ON EARTH..IS EXTREMELY UNDERRATED..HE IS 77 NOW STILL ROCKING..LONG LONG CAREER HISTORY!!

I almost wish they'd just give it away to a great and responsible guitarist on a couple of conditions
1. He would have to carve his name into the body of the guitar (small font)

Someone with sense on RUclips. A first
Trigger: And that's what I've done. Maintained it for 20 years. This old broom's had 17 new heads and 14 new handles in its time.
Sid: How the hell can it be the same bloody broom then?
Trigger: There's the picture. What more proof do you need?
fastnet101 i was pissing myself the first time i saw that
The greatest TV show of all time.
I gotta agree...I'd modify Hendrix's guitar right after I re-paint the fuckin' Mona Lisa...
It was 1976. Jimi was not yet sacred. It's a guitar, and if Jimi were still alive, I'd bet he'd 100% agree with what Frank did to this axe.
What Zappa has done here is rebuild a nonfunctional paintbrush; one not valued because of its qualities, but simply because a certain person held it.
crudeviolin Pretty sure he burned it for a reason.
Lighting a guitar on fire before gifting it shows even more how much of an innovator Hendrix really was.
