Dweezil is a hell of a musician. That Crazy Train video... he's spot on with his playing. And I've seen him do Hot for Teacher... he's quite good. Of course he was taught Hot for Teacher by Eddie so... getting it straight from the horse's mouth.
fair Warning is also my favorite VH album!
Eddie is probably the nicest, most supportive guy out there. When Alice in Chains were opening for Van Halen during the "F.U.C.K." tour, Jerry Cantrell was there during a sound check and he was going "Aw man, you have the most awesome stuff man!"
And Ed went "Wanna have a go?" and handed him his guitar. Well you'd have to be galactically stupid to say no to such an offer. Cantrell played Ed's guitar through Ed's amps and just wailed away. And went "Thanks man, it was a blast, too bad that I can't afford any of it."
The tour wraps up, the band members go home and Cantrell is met by his landlord "Ah finally, now you can help me get rid of this stuff which was sent to you!" A huge crate containing three Peavey 5150 full stacks and two Musicman Eddie Van Halen signature model guitars had been send to Cantrell, compliments from Eddie.
wow. crazy story to read right now. hurts deeply
I saw that tour and 'Alice In Chains' blew me away. Cantrell is a force to be reckoned with regarding his tone. Incidentally, one of those EVH guitars was stolen from Jerry in 2001, it was the Ernie Ball gold-top EVH model. Two guys tracked it down and returned it to Jerry in 2018.
@@det.frankdrebin668 I saw that tour. One thing that was odd where I saw the show, the main house lights were not turned off during AICs set. It was like seeing AIC playing at a trade show or something. It was very strange. I wonder if that was a screw up at The Thunder Dome or something that happened through the whole tour.
@@TheJimburke Incidentally, that is the way I remember it also......there were no spot lights during their entire set for A.I.C. and the house lights stayed on throughout the set.....it was definitely unusual.
@@det.frankdrebin668 That is an interesting choice for lights for a rock concert. The only other thing I remember about the show was Layne's voice being incredible. I remember he was bending over and just belting it out and he was awesome. Sadly I have no memories of Van Halen's set.
That guitar is now PRICELESS
Long live the King
Edward Van Halen✌💛🤘
👍🇨🇦
Right! And it's worth even more with the Dweezil Zappa connection. INCREDIBLY good vibes with this guitar.
Long live the King? The king is gone, friend. May he rest in peace. A friend of mine knew both of the Van Halen brothers well before they made it big. He said they came from a Catholic home. I hope Eddie made it to Heaven. Now everyone is saying he was a nice guy. I only met him twice and he seemed like a nice person to me.
He sold it. Turns out its almost priceless.
I strolled in to local music store in Hanover, Mass. called Crossroads few years back to try out a new rack mount processor they had there. I pulled up on my motorcycle and could hear screaming guitar riffs coming from the store. I walked up and the door was locked and my buddy that owned it let me in. The owners of the store were good friends with the band Extreme and Nuno was out here with Dweezil because he was producing Dweezils new album at the time. Anyhow I got to hang there for a good 2 hour with the 2 owners, Nuno, Dweezil, their bodyguard and a dude named Chuck that was always there and listen to these 2 guitar animals trade riffs back and forth and learned alot of stuff in those 2 hours and it was an experience I'll never forget. ;)
You're not allowed to introduce yourself to me.
Realise this problem you have.
@@Gma7788 Go to sleep. You're getting delusional again...lol
Dweezil is amazing, he's too modest also. Makes him endearing.
Sorry, but pink Floyd existed.
Only Dweezil Zappa deserves it... The love and respect for EVH is so apparent when ever he talks about him. What a great guy to carry on the EVH history and legacy. And what a great player he is.
Awsome. The Fair Warning is to me the Holly Grail of VH albums. Tone wise, songwritting, etc. and I mean all the band not just Edward. It's also a joy to hear Dweezil, a great guitarrist in his own right, and an Eddie personnal friend and fan, owning this guitar. He truly deserves it. Greetings from Portugal.
It's not
Fair Warning is good, BUT I'm going to have to say Women and Children First wins the prize for me. It was the first concert I went to, so I'm biased.
Yeah Jorge it's my favorite VH tone of all their albums.
Well agree. Cheers.
Fair Warning is the best for me and all my musician friends as well
Dweezil is a monster guitarist.

If he was ever gonna pick up a plank of wood, he was gonna have to be.
This is awesome. Not only is it always cool to see Dweezil play, but he's been gifted Eddie's Rasta project guitar!! Nice vid and a nice piece of Eddie history here.
Pickup - it's a Schaller Hot Stuff. They were made in the early 80's and installed on Kramer Pacers. My Kramer Pacer came with the same pickup, still have it.
So much more special to have the Rasta now. RIP EVH!
Dimarzio X2N pup. Got one in 1982 and it's still in the same guitar.
Can this be edited without Mark Agnesi in it? That would be great.
You Love His Cock???
I wholeheartedly agree, cannot stand that fool.
Lol
Because of the eyeliner?
Both of those douchebags
Dweezil is a really lovely guy. A terrific guitarist too
No offense to Frank, obviously he was a visionary artist, but I love hearing Dweezil going 80's. His shredder guitar mode is way cool.
That guitar just oozes Ed's tone for sure and it's in great hands with Dweezil.
Dweezil states that he doesn’t know how Eddie got in contact with his Dad but Steve Vai recently said in one of his facebook live chats that his roommate was the one who gave Eddie franks contact info by mistake, not knowing it was Edward Van Halen on the phone with him and Steve freaked out because apparently Frank didn’t like anyone giving out his phone number without asking him first. That’s how Dweezil first met Eddie.
Wow...... That is too cool. To be able to own that would just be insane.
The guitar of the King! Magic! Love ya' Dwezzil!
That passage from 12:34-12:39 is one the coolest things ever.
lol wow had to go back to catch what was happening there I'd never seen that...obviously Dweezil knows what he's doing.
They talk about him like he's already gone. In a way, that shows a lot of respect for a living guitar legend. He changed a lot of peoples life. Guitar designer like Brian May and some few others, he's a page in Rock history. They're all getting old but not in the mirror of music.
Now he is gone :(
RIP EVH
RIP Eddie :(
Dweezil has some of the sickest historical guitars. Frank's SG and Performance, the Hendrix burst and this, and that's just four guitars. Im so jealous of this fucking guy. Also, I just saw him three months ago and the gig was fucking amazing, a lot better than I thought it was going to be.
Actually the way Eddie ended up at Frank and Dweezil's house was Eddie met Steve Vai first and Steve being the young hired gun for Frank told Eddie that he could introduce him to Frank. Eddie called Steve Vai's house but he wasn't their and his roommate gave Eddie Frank's number witch was apparently a big no no and Steve was worried that Frank would be upset with him but when he was about to call Frank and tell him what happened Frank called Steve first and told him Eddie was already at his house and would he like to come hang out with them and he did. He said it was an amazing experience because they just sat around listening to music and of coarse busting out the guitars and jamming. Steve even mentioned Dweezil being their and being a kid. Imagine your dad is Frank Zappa and you get to hang out with him, Steve Vai, and Eddie Van Halen and listen to them bullshit and jam all night. No wonder Dweezil is such an amazing player. Not to mention his insane guitar collection, he has a Hendrix and an EVH? Good Lord! By the way I heard this story straight from Steve's mouth so it's legit.
That's a rad story bro!
Anybody besides me want to puke knowing Frank Zappas house, his music Vaults and the UMRK Utility Muffin Research Kitchen studios are now owned by Lady Gaga and occupied by her unknown artist loser friends ? It makes me sick that Mowtown Studios are a national landmark but California couldnt work a deal with the Zappa estate to purchase the home & historical studios, especially since the UMRK studio was the very 1st 100% digital studio in the US while even Electric Ladyland studios were analog .
@@michaelledford4751 Dweezel has to ask permission to his half brother if he can use his fathers music. That must be zum kotzen... Soooooooooo. Awesome!
I love watching this video. That guitar was made to reach out and grab the audience. A true treasure.
We've got pink Floyd instead.
Years ago, I saw a video interview with Dweezil..and he had what looked like a Charvel "Star" shaped guitar ( orange body), and he stated that Eddie had given that to him as well.
This dude is a player he used the same tapping finger as Eddie and Mr Zappa is another great American player he is up there with skills and knowledge of guitar when he taped that descending lick that got me...
Thanks
Frank and Eddie used to actually be neighbors back when Dweezil was just a little kid. I read a Guitar World magazine interview where Eddie said he remembered when he used to go over and visit Frank and Dweezil would be running around the house in his Spider-Man pajamas. When Dweezil got a little bit older, Eddie would come over and give him all the free guitar lessons he wanted as a favor to Frank. There’s a reason Dweezil can totally nail Eddie’s playing and tone like no one else!
Thank you Dweezil fair warning is my favourite too..... awesome guitar
Dweezil is such an incredible guitarist. I wish he'd release more full on guitar and rock albums. An all instrumental affair in full on killer sound and form (like his solo doodling here) would be insanely good. He's incredibly underrated.
Ed has always and will always be my Master of guitar. I only dream to meet him, say hello and show him how much he has taught me.
Yes, Fair Warning was the pinnacle of Ed’s genius.
He also got lessons from Steve Vai too. Lucky kid. It helps to have a rock star for a dad if you want to meet other rock stars.
Also he own's Hendrix Montreux guitar that he torched. Damn, dude has a serious axe collection. Luckily he can actually play. I hate MFers that have really expensive crap and can't play while these kids that really have talent are playing oh cheap Korean knock-off that have action so high you can use it as an archery bow.
Eddie has talked about this guitar being heavy as hell also being the first one that he put a floyd on even before Frankenstein . I first saw this guitar in 1980 when Eddie was in Guitar Player magazine. He's on the cover holding the Dragon guitar but inside there is the now famous picture of him in that jumpsuit holding a pick axe with most of his guitars at that time & this guitar Dweezil has is the unpainted strat type laying in front on the ground.
Great sounding guitar. It barks, pops, sizzles. How Eddie met Frank and his son and the rest of his family was through Steve Vai (who was playing with Frank at the time). Steve Vai was supposed to take him over to see Frank, having met Eddie back stage, and was going to introduce him (arranging it with Frank first, as Zappa didn't like people showing up). Eddie phoned Steve the next day (who wasn't in) and so got Steve's flat mate to give him Frank's number and then went over himself that same day, so desperate was he to meet and jam with Frank.
In Oakland 81, Ed used that guitar on Unchained but not on Is this love or any other song that I know of. Unchained has the low E string tuned down a full step. I always wondered what happened to that guitar, and now I know.
Hear About It Later is also in Drop D. Not sure which guitar he used for that one in the Oakland video....

Dweezil is cool as fuck- the perfect ambassador for Eddie's continued legacy.
OK so when I listen to commentary I sometimes put the youtube video speed on 1.5 X's just as a time saver...so I did that on this video...and because I do it so much I get used to the speed talk and don't even notice that it's weird...in this video all was cool...until Dweezil started playing, and I was like "what the...????, I've watched a bunch of Zappa Plays Zappa, and I never saw Dweezil play that fast"!!! It was only about 3 seconds after it got really crazy and then I realized I had it sped up, hahahaha! Thanks for posting this cool video!
My favorite EVH stripe guitar!!! Pics are kind of hard to find online and I've always wondered what happened to it.
I remember obsessing over those photos in LIFE magazine and seeing that guitar. I always wondered why I never saw him play it.
Dweezil has some awesome guitars. He has one of Hendrix's guitars and this guitar from Eddie. I also like his Madonna guitar that paint job is pretty cool. Then of course his fathers guitars. Crazy collection.
I have that same pickup in my bass guitar I build a million years ago. Yes, bass.
GODDAMNIT!! I wondered what the hell ever happened to that guitar. Sadly this was at the height of Eddies' drug days and explains why he painted it this way. He used to carry necks and bodies around just to have backups in case something went wrong but sadly they usually became black and white strats with the usual red in between. I know that has his favourite motif but the black and white Charvel that he repainted later was my favourite along with the unchained guitar. Sadly neither now exist in their original form. Eddie is always experimenting but I wish that he would start over with a new guitar rather than butcher the ones that he played and are now legendary. Thanks for sharing. This is one of the few things that no one knew about.
I didn’t know the whole story but I knew you had it. Thanks for sharing. These stories are so great and I really hope they keep flowing. EVH 4EVR
Dweezil should do a cover album of Van Halen songs and playing just the way he would play them I think it would be very much appreciative to the Van Halen public Dweezil is a great guitar player I've seen videos of him cutting heads with Steve Vai Steve Vai did not come out on top

Dimarzio X2N was one of the only real hot replacement pickups available back then. Seymour Duncan's were just getting popular, but were relatively unknown, so it was a Dimarzio Super Distortion, Bill Lawrence L500 and L500XL, Duncan Distortion or JB (and Duncan's were relatively unknown in 1981-82) - those were about it for high output replacement pickups. It wasn't like today where you have a bazillion choices for replacement pickups.
@Rufus T Firefly The Invader came out in 1983. This Van Halen "Rasta" Strat would have been from from late 1980 to 81. I had an Invader for a couple of months in '84 after seeing Jake E. Lee with one in his white Charvel... I hated it. It was harsh, way too bright... and didn't sound anything like Jake's killer Marshall JCM 800 tone on Bark At The Moon. I started using a JB (SH-4), and later the JB Trembucker (TB-4), and occasionally the Duncan Distortion (TB-6), and the Duncan Custom V (TB-14). Seymour Duncan also made a short-lived bridge pickup call The Stag Mag... that had dual slug polepieces instead of the traditional slugs on one coil and screws on the other. I think Duncan stopped making The Stag Mag, except for special order around 1985-86. And the Invader is ugly and sounds like shit... that's why hardly anyone uses them.
Regards 🎸
X2N is around 500mv; hot raw passive goodness and tons of tone. Don't dare pervert it with a soulless pussy pedal.

Very interesting to hear the tone of the guitar. While Dweezils love of VH and undeniable skill are a factor, that guitar really has a signature sound. More so than a evh wolfgang. Just my opinion.
If I had to visualize EVH tone, it's like a fire hose on full blast, but holding it back just far enough that it " snakes " while you use it.
I Totally agree. I understand Eddie chased tone and all that, but I prefer these built seconds and whatnot waaaaay over all his Wolfgangs, Music man, etc.
Tone came from the pups, amps as well as the hands and mind of EVH. If people want to go deep into "tone chasing" they need to pay attention to "resonance".
It sounds like the stage show guitar.
It also sounds like the ibanez destroyer pickups.
It could be the mighty mite pickup.
