Immortal got me into black metal in the early/mid 2000's. They were harsh and chaotic enough to speak for the genre, but mainstream enough to find in FYE or Barnes and Noble. Before that, I had no idea to even look for other bands in this genre.
I started with Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk. That was back in 1997. And then I found Mayhem, Immortal, Dark Funeral and Marduk.
Same here. Discover around that year Dimmu Borgir and Emperor works as well Enslaved, Immortel, Dismal Euphony, Forlorn, CoF etc. Nice atmospheric black metal.
I think the texture of Black meta is the thing that is almoust hypnotic. It's like white noise, really relaxing for me, not for any of my friends though
For me it was Gorgoroth- Under The Sign Of Hell album. First song was Revelation of Doom. I never heard anything like it at that time. For me i just love old-school Gorgoroth
Impaled Nazarene - Ugra-Karma was my first BM experience back in the early 90s. Thought the name sounded suitabley evil, and the cover art was beautiful so I bought it on a whim. Been a fan of the genre since since.
I don't usually comment on youtube videos, but I'll make an exception here... I've had an on and off relationship with metal overall, going from loving Maiden and Metallica like most middle schoolers that liked heavier music, to listening to it almost never once I got into punk and hardcore, I ended up dipping my toes into black metal in my sophomore year of college and getting into some bands like Dissection and Watain, but it didn't quite stick, and I eventually reverted back to my music from before, one day I had some yearn to listen to Panopticon's Autumn Eternal when I went on a run through a trail, and I fell in love, now in 2021, I've listened to more metal than ever and the majority of it has been black metal. I fully delved into the subgenres trying to find out all I could about them... I'd have to say my favorites are atmospheric, blackgaze, and DSBM, Panopticon is who truly got me into the genre, and its still my favorite artist in it, other favorites in it include Alcest, Ghost Bath, and Gaoth (another great thing about getting into the genre with a band like Panopticon was not having to be embarrassed by racism of my favorite band) I loved the video and love that this series is getting made as I would love to see more people getting into metal, and especially black metal!
Bal-Sagoth got me into BM back when I was a young'un. Couldn't get enough of the combination of epic sound, esoteric weird fiction lyrics, and Roberts's shrieks and magisterial clean vocals. Would love to see "how to get into" eps for trad-metal, doom, and death! Though with Blayne hosting Imma guess that a DM episode is a foregone conclusion. Looking forward to more! \m/
I got into black metal with mayhem (not very suprising, huh?). Our german teacher went with us on class trip last year and as we took a train/bus ride, he threatened to play mayhem if we don't take a seat. When it was normal school again, my metalhead friend and I were talking a little about it and then I decided to take a listen and I pretty liked it. Now I always take an upside-down cross with me to school and I even plan to show up with corpsepaint one day.
It's good that I am not the only teen listening to black metal. I am Already preparing to do battle jacket, I also started with mayhem, wich my friend showed to me in august, then I became bkack metalhead in matter of 2 months, currently my favourite bands are dissection, marduk, darkthrone and immortal
The song that got me into BM was of course Dark Funeral - My Funeral. I became an instant fan of Dominator. Right now, Atmos Black is more of my thing.
Heard Tongue of Fire by Emperor on a Kerrang! CD in 2001 as I was getting into metal and it blew my mind. So heavy yet beautiful as well. Still my favourite Black Metal band
While I had appreciation for atmospheric BM bands like Agalloch, it was actually avant-garde BM bands like Oranssi Pazuzu and Imperial Triumphant (I know, they're more blackened death than BM...) that got me into it. Now one of my favourite sub-genres!
One of my friends listens so some black metal and introduced me to it. He told me to look into the story of Mayhem and now I’m hooked. This genre has some insane history.
I'm old so it was Venom that introduced me to black metal. Because they had an album called Black Metal. My latest black metal purchase was the 2 Hellripper albums that should arrive in the post any day now. Full circle, just t like the man said. Great pilot!
Venom was scary! When I was 8 years old in the early 80's my big brother showed me that horned goat pentagram and told me about devil worship. There were stories about local people in town killing cows and nailing them to large trees in a forest and then burning them in a ceremony. If you played some songs backwards you could call on the devil. All that jazz =) It as exciting and scary though. I drew A LOT of pentagrams in my school books =) I didn't know any Venom songs though, just the imagery. Now, I want to go back and find out more about the actual music!
My girlfriend is a total metal head and she had an extra ticket to a Behemoth concert. Napalm Death and Arch Enemy were also there and that’s how I truly started listening to metal!
I was so late to the black metal party. I first heard Immortal and Abbath when he went solo. I then went on to listen to Behemoth's older records. From there I got into the more atmospheric/melodic black metal like MGLA and Uada. Now I am completely sucked in. Lamp of Murmuur put out a really good album this year for anyone wanting to hear new stuff. Also I loved this video a lot.
Not that late...I stumbled upon Behemoth and The Satanist last October and I'm in my mid 40s. Then got into the BM classics from Norway. Now I rarely listen to anything else hahaha.
For me it was emperor's anthems to the weilkin at dusk, not as raw as some of their contemporaries, but as a teenager in the late 90's it was a perfect introduction. The best thing about the genre at the time was the sense of mystery about it. It was only what you might of read in a monthly magazine, mixed with myth and roumor.
The first band that got me into black metal was Dimmu Borgir. The symphonic/melodic aspect was really appealing, and the creepy dark tones were then more palatable.
The First 2 bands that got me into black metal were Caladan Brood and Vallendusk. Each band released their debuts in 2013. And that was the year I fell in love with Atmospheric Black Metal. This is when it all started for me
If I may, this host dude here don't have fuckin clue on how, by being extremely fun and passionate at once, he made me look deeper into all genres of metal without any fear and lesser regrets. THANKS BLAYNE! Now I'll watch this video with my girl (doubt it captures her interest on the genre though ahah)

No particular band got me into Black Metal, I just wanted something darker, heavier and just extreme. I love the way it sounds and how crazy the history of this metal subgenre is.
It's amazing that my first introduction to metal was Glam metal back in 1986 and now to add Black metal to the list!! After watching a video on Mayhem's history, Thats the band that got me into Black Metal!!
Thank you for this interesting video! My first introduction to black metal was Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger. It took me a while to get it and understand what exactly I was hearing and why it sounded the why that it did, but that's what made me curious. I was amazed to discover a completely new sub-culture which I didn't know existed within the metal community with great music and even greater stories. If I were to recommend anyone today on "how to get into black metal", then "that racist vlogger we don't talk about" is IMO the best gateway- both because of the history and stories revolving his one-man-band project and his great, diversed music style and aesthetic/atmosphere.
One of my greatest personal proudness is to have mixed live black metal legends music in my city, Guadalajara, the list has Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Watain, Dark Funeral, 1349 among others !
Black Metal gives me life! My first exposure was with Dimmu Borgir and Emperor , then I dived to more pure forms like Immortal, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth and more. I haven't really looked into more modern bands of the last decade, though.
I wanna say that Satyricon is a very good band to start with. A few songs to begin with, Black Crow On A Tombstone, The Wolfpack, Die By My Hand, The Sign Of The Trident. The whole album The Age Of Nero is really good to be honest. The vocals are pretty mild, you can even hear what he sings, and the production isn't bad, it dosen't sound like it's recorded through a potato. And theres alot of good metal riffs!
Same here with mayhem, personally I don't like mercyful fate and only thing they have in common with black metal is corpse paint, but king diamond is good band
That one is gold. I tripled by accident on that record when it came out, since then I've be a fan of the band. However, they never reached the level of the record againd.
I think this is the pilot which has the most scope. A good beginners guide to a genre/sub-genre/sub-sub genre; could be expanded over 6 episodes easily a la Lock Horns.
I've been a metalhead for 12 years. I love Technical death metal, DSBM, Progressive metal, Extreme metal etc... I don't see anything wrong with black metal. It's not even brutal to me. I'm a African-American metalhead so I know I should watch out for certain black metal bands *Sigh*😒 I feel like personal beliefs, etc... shouldn't be in the music, but hey I can't change what they do. It's their music.
Black metal is Satanic, not racist. Those stupid racist black metal bands are fake and unworthy to hold the genre. Enjoy true black metal like Odskapt, Funeral Mist, Dodsfall where race isnt in it.
I picked up Lords of Chaos from my local bookstore around 2001. Passed it around to all of my weirdo freshmen friends and soon after we were smoking pot and listening to Darkthrone in a dingy basement in the midwest. Oh those were the days.
Emperor's Anthems got me into BM. I randomly picked it up at a music store in Kansas in the late 90's. They guy who owned the store had really great versatile tastes in music. Had it not been for him, I would have been surprised to find anything Black Metal in that town.
I bought a few Black Metal cds in the 90s. I remember one was a Mayhem and one Beherit. I thought it was ok, but I still preferred death metal. Years later I heard an Enthroned song, and I was finally born again. Once you “get” it, you will be hooked forever.
The bands that got me into it was a nobody, 13 monthly listeners, but VERY good band called Shadowflag, a 4.4k monthly listeners band called Netherbird that are absolutely fuckin amazing, and then Immortal

"Dusk And Her Embrace" was the 1st "Black Metal" album I ever listened to from start to finish.
For me it was Blut Aus Nord and Mispyrming that really got me into black metal. Now it’s my favorite genre.
Blut Aus Nord Helped me get into black metal too. Even my girlfriend liked it. Leviathan was the first
It was Misþyrming for me as well. Took a few listens to fully grow on me but once it did, there was no going back.
For me it was Gorgoroth- Under The Sign Of Hell album. First song was Revelation of Doom. I never heard anything like it at that time. For me i just love old-school Gorgoroth
Without a doubt Dissection is what got me into black metal.
Same bro
I'd have to say my favorites are atmospheric, blackgaze, and DSBM, Panopticon is who truly got me into the genre, and its still my favorite artist in it, other favorites in it include Alcest, Ghost Bath, and Gaoth
(another great thing about getting into the genre with a band like Panopticon was not having to be embarrassed by racism of my favorite band)
I loved the video and love that this series is getting made as I would love to see more people getting into metal, and especially black metal!
For anyone who wants good Hellripper suggestions:
-Total Fucking Mayhem
-Bastard of Hades
-Vampire's Grave
Whiskey Ritual is another Black n Roll band that deserves to be mentioned. lml
@@juanm.q5121 lml
Can't forget Midnight lml
"The Unsilent Storms in the North Abyss" by Immortal is what got me into Black Metal.
The song that got me into BM was of course Dark Funeral - My Funeral. I became an instant fan of Dominator. Right now, Atmos Black is more of my thing.
That was my first Dark Funeral song too. I heard that while rolling on MDMA lol
Atmospheric Black Metal is how I got into the genre too, with a splash of Blackgaze and some Post-BM
Heard Tongue of Fire by Emperor on a Kerrang! CD in 2001 as I was getting into metal and it blew my mind. So heavy yet beautiful as well. Still my favourite Black Metal band
Carach Angren got me into black metal
Glen McPhail yes Venom for me too- although back in the 80s we did not have much choice. Still an avid BM fan.
The first black metal band I heard was the great old ones, they’re lovecraftian atmospheric black metal and I love it
I was so late to the black metal party.
Me too🖤🖤🖤
Not that late...I stumbled upon Behemoth and The Satanist last October and I'm in my mid 40s.
Blayne is great!
Xasthur and Leviathan were the first two black metal projects that got me into black metal.
Just listen to Goatmoon. It has everything from atmospheric folkish song to fast and melodic rock’n’roll ones. Kansojen hävittäjä, kunnia armageddon, vääräoppisen tuhovärssy, there’s something for everyone.
Too bad they’re nazi
@@Morn__ So what? If anything, it’s a bonus.
@@vegard3940 If you’re a nazi good for you (I don’t wanna argue about that) but unless you had lived on mars you should know that the vast majority of people consider nazism a really bad thing nowadays. And if you consider nazism a bad thing (like 99% of the people on earth) you can’t listen to those bands otherwise you are a hypocrite.
And if I am a poser for saying these things, I rather be a poser than a hypocrite that doesn’t follows his own ideas.
@@vegard3940
Goatmoon fucking RULE
No particular band got me into Black Metal, I just wanted something darker, heavier and just extreme. I love the way it sounds and how crazy the history of this metal subgenre is.
Me: been listening to black metal for 24 or so years. Still clicks on this link.
Yeah how'd .. why am I hear I am a BM musician this guy makes me a little angry
You can say whatever you want about vrag but nobody can deny that he never disappoints music wise and wrote allot of the best music in the genre
_A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit_ was the first black metal track I heard.
About 24 years ago. It was Opus 4 by Abigor and In The Nightside Eclipse by Emperor.
Black Metal gives me life! My first exposure was with Dimmu Borgir and Emperor , then I dived to more pure forms like Immortal, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth and more. I haven't really looked into more modern bands of the last decade, though.
Now lets just wait for the Hipster Black Metal guy to do an angry response video to this
I was looking for this comment.
Ugh, I wish those kinds of gatekeepers would just enjoy something for once in their lives.
Tbh that channel has done more good for metal than BangerTV ever
That guy is def a secret (open?) Facist.
I eagerly await for his video.
I really fell in love with the genre after discovering Solbrud. Perfect Atmosphere
Can’t get into pure black metal but Bands like Agalloch blow my mind
Cradle of Filth was the first thing I heard when I was 12. Every year as I got older it needed to be... heavier. I choose this show.
Yes I think it was cradle for me too. Back in 94 or so.
Cradle of Filth for me as well. I was 15 (in 2000).
The band that technically got me into black metal was Mayhem, but my first black metal band was Mercyful Fate/King Diamond
Same here with mayhem, personally I don't like mercyful fate and only thing they have in common with black metal is corpse paint, but king diamond is good band
New episodes of *How to get Into* starting on March 16th!
What genres do you want to see covered in an episode?
Funeral doom metal, Drone Doom and Avant-garde metal
Doom Metal
Industrial metal. Many think the have entered, but they actually passed trough the door od the neighbour Industrial Electronic music.
DOOOOOOOOOOOOM
Godflesh.
Satyricon was what first got me into it. Years later they are still one of my favorite bands.
That None album is soooo good. I would try listening to Darkthrone’s Old Star album because it’s a bit more heavy metal riffing.
I basically got into black metal with psychonaut 4 and a random DSBM playlist I found.
uada devoid of light. everyone must hear this.
@@Amp661 🎃 Thanxs dude
I picked up Lords of Chaos from my local bookstore around 2001. Passed it around to all of my weirdo freshmen friends and soon after we were smoking pot and listening to Darkthrone in a dingy basement in the midwest. Oh those were the days.
Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" sealed the deal for me
That Hellripper song sounded like 'Hit the Lights'
include all metal even POWER, FOLK,DOOM,SPEED,TRASHER, SYMPHONIC amd all the enbetween!
🔥🔥🤘🤘
darkthrone and bathory got me into black metal
Dark Funeral’s Where Shadows Forever Reign peaked my interest, Mgła furthered it, and of course Batushka’s first album hooked me
Shame that Batushka had their own schism. Excellent band though.
Emperor's Anthems got me into BM. I randomly picked it up at a music store in Kansas in the late 90's. They guy who owned the store had really great versatile tastes in music. Had it not been for him, I would have been surprised to find anything Black Metal in that town.
Satyricon- The Shadowthrone. Randomly bought it at my local record store and have never looked back since
I bought a few Black Metal cds in the 90s. I remember one was a Mayhem and one Beherit. I thought it was ok, but I still preferred death metal. Years later I heard an Enthroned song, and I was finally born again. Once you “get” it, you will be hooked forever.
"all that music by that racist vlogger we dont talk about" had me rolling. Perfect way to bring it up without mentioning him
I cracked up when he said that, just perfect!
Was he talking about Varg?
@@russell2890 yes
This is a sick idea for a series. Also thank you for showing me Hellripper a month ago, made me start listening to black metal again
thanks for suggesting none. sounds great. i got into black metal through altar of plagues. still my favourite bm band
The bands that got me into it was a nobody, 13 monthly listeners, but VERY good band called Shadowflag, a 4.4k monthly listeners band called Netherbird that are absolutely fuckin amazing, and then Immortal
Sweet I’ll use this to get all my real cool pals into NSBM! Thx
NSBM RULES
I hope to god this is a joke-
