Physicality was the theme in this game. NFL Films has ALWAYS made great videos, films, video packages with drama & such, & documenting all of NFL history for us. We all should be appreciative of what they’ve done. In fact, Steve Sabol, the main founder of NFL Films alongside his Dad, was one of the main voices of the sport & league, for me, in the 80s & 90s bc of their work. He is STILL an NFL Legend, in that regard; and STILL one of the Legendary voices & figures of the sport. Period.
I was in a tent in Afghanistan freezing my ass off for this game. Only SB I've missed since I was 5. First time I've even seen the highlights. Couple of fun observations. i think that Warner is in his 3rd season here...it's Brady's second season; first as a starter. Warner goes on to have his career fall apart, gets released, goes to the Giants as a stop gap for Eli which is disaster, leaves NY to mentor Leinart....resurrects his career, takes the lowly Cardinals to the SB, ends up retiring 5 years after that he's in the HoF. People don't seem to remember just how bad both of the teams that Warner got to the SB were. Warner held the top 3 passing performances in SB history until recently. BUT....in that same time Tom Brady goes on to play in EIGHT MORE SB's and he might be retired (I'm not buying it). It's insane. Hell, Mike Vrabel forced an interception in this game....he's heading into his 8th season coaching in the NFL; 4th as a head coach...and a good one at that. There used to be an argument for decades about the greatest QB....not anymore. Tom Brady has every passing record....has SEVEN SB rings....3 more than anyone else. The greatest of all time? If you beat the best twice in the biggest game it's easy....it's gotta be Eli Manning. 🤣
Interestingly enough on the Touchdown to David Patten it was the same route ran the week before in the NFC Championship game by philadelphia where Todd Pinkston ran an out & up on Dexter McCleon for a touchdown before the half so Brady & Company seen that on film and knew who they were going to attack.
There was no better sports radio broadcast duo than Gil Santos and Gino Cappelletti in New England. Their call on Vinatieri's game-winner is unforgettable considering that after a 30 year partnership in the booth witnessing so many frustrating seasons, they were finally sharing this title with the long-suffering Patriots fans.
The Rams Owners screwed up when they pissed off the Football Gods , when they changed the colors in their uniforms, after winning the SB the year before.
I totally agree with the St. Louis journalist Thomas. I could not believe how soft the Rams played the last drive. There was no pressure but the game was tied and a field goal wins it.
i remember having serious debates in Connecticut with other fans if we continue with Brady or ride the rest out with Bledsoe. What a lot of people forget is Tom got hurt in the playoffs and Drew took over early in the AFC championship game and looked much better than Brady and played great. Remember Drew was no slouch he was a pro bowl QB with experience and a huge arm and even though this kid was leading us to wins there was a discussion all throughout New England if we let Drew start the Super Bowl. Most of us agreed that Tom should start but in the back of our mind we didn't know if that would be the right decision.
"We all felt Tom had a better pre-season than Drew, but he was the franchise QB, so I went with him expecting Tom would play at some point" - Bill Belichick. I was in college when all this happened, and we all knew Bledsoe sucked ass. I guess its typical for the type of people who live in Connecticut to have no clue. Here in Rhode Island we were calling for Drew to get benched after going 0-2 without a TD pass. He was terrible and a stiff, when Brady came in we were so happy the donkey got benched. We also knew there was no way Drew would play over Tom in the Superbowl lmao, who would ever even argue that smh.
He also never looked "much better than Brady". He almost lost that game if u go watch it, he threw a ball right to the other teams CB who dropped it before he had another chance to win it. Morons.

I was basically new to football, with no chosen team. I favored the Patriots, the Buccaneers and the Jaguars, but was undecided. Because of this attack I chose the Patriots as my team, simply because I felt I am a Patriot of my country. I had absolutely no idea the Patriots would win the Super Bowl. Turns out this was a very good decision.
They were not use to getting hit in the mouth up to that point. They weren't ready for the physicality from the start. As Mike Tyson put: "Everyone has a game plan until they get hit in the mouth." When the Pats hit the Rams in the mouth it appeared they didn't know how to respond.
Major props to Kurt Warner, one of the most humble, amazing human beings. I really respect that guy a lot. My only peeve here is the amount of extended adds I had to watch in order to view this whole video. The NFL is a cash cow. I understand the need to make money but they have more money than what they know what to do with. Then why use a free platform (RUclips) to load up a zillion adds for people trying to watch videos ? Some people have limited access internet, They should cut back on some of these adds.
Its hard to pull that off these days because nobody can sneak up on teams like the Pats did back then. Back in 2001 the Patriots were on nobody's radar but then they got on a roll and even coming into that Super Bowl nobody paid any attention to the Pats as it was all about the Rams. Safe to say the direction the Pats and Rams went has had a lasting effect even to this day.
@@Miller2h41 Guess you didn't watch ESPN back then, they ran a Brady Bunch segment all year. Oh, and the Rams beat the Pats on their home field that year.

Bill was Parcell's protegee. This is what he did for most of his career: rough defense. No surprise he chose this stragegy. He is an old style defensive coach. That is why the only great WR Brady got was Moss. He always liked to invest in defense as a manager. He only got him Moss because Moss took a paycut, wanted to play with Brady and everyone said he was done (fools). You can see he his love of defense and his lack of interest in offense in his last SB with the Rams. I even suspect he chose Brady over Brees because he was a kid he could control.
When John Madden made the comment that the Patriots should play for overtime my thought was "No Way!" because the rams had momentum at that point and fatigue was taking effect on the Pats so that last thing they didn't need was the rams getting the football back. As Coach Belichick put it: "We didn't want them getting the ball back."
I still scratch my head trying to figure out what madden was thinking. You have the ball with a minute left. Why would you take a knee to risk losing a coin toss to the "greatest show on turf?"
As mentioned the Pats defense was exhausted by that point. Late 3rd into the 4th quarter they were doing there best to hang on because they knew the Rams would gain traction eventually. Thankfully they scored fast and left just under a minute and a half.
After this game Kurt Warner never won another game as the Rams QB. The next time he would win a game would be in 2004 when he payed for the New York Giants.
What this shows is how to combat a high flying attack of The Greatest Show on Turf and that is by roughing them up every single play because a mistake is bound to happen.
what it shows is when you know every play that's coming by recognizing the formations you can cause mistakes. This was theft. Rams were and will always be superior to the Patriots that year.
@@carl5381 The Patriots played them earlier and tried blitzing and it didn't work so they changed it up and the results were different. I don't care about a team being superior than the other because if they were the superior team than they would have won the game but they didn't. The team that scored the most points was the superior team and that was the Patriots.
@@aaronjackson9385 The Rams under Mike Martz were a timing offense so physicality at the line or within 5 yards of pass plays is how you combat a big play offense or simply hit them in the mouth with or without the football which is what they did.
Marshall Faulk I love ya but get out with the Rams starting the constant passing game did you watch the Chargers under Don Coryell, The Bengals under Sam Wyche, The Bills under Marv Levy. Everyone of those teams were quick strike fast offenses.
@aaronjackson9385 I'm a huge Bengals fan my parents had season tickets from 1978-2000 until my fathers job had us relocate so now we never miss a game on tv. It just blows my mind how much teams talk about them changing the game when in the mid 80's Sam Wyche invented the no huddle & Buffalo cried about it in the 1988 AFC Championship by going to the Commissioners Office & steal the no huddle which fine but what offends me is Levy gets credit for the no huddle when Sam Wyche started it.
If Dave Dameshek was still doing the N if L, one idea could be "What if the Rams won Super Bowl 36?" The premise is, if the Rams win this game, are they still in St. Louis today or do they still move back to LA?
I've always wonder that as well? Like would the Rams have been the team of the 2000's and stay in St. Louis? Does Peyton Manning win more Super Bowls without the Patriots constantly getting in the way? Does Brady get traded because Belichick doesn't trust him anymore? Too many what if scenarios, but it would make for a great video
I am from Chicago and we had a family friend who played on the Patriots once (Mack Herron) we have been Pats fans ever since.. We also watched The Wolverines play and saw how incredible Brady was playing for them in 2 seasons - (99) Citrus Bowl MVP & (2000) Orange Bowl MVP - both games and wins as under dogs.. 450 yards and 4 TD's vs Alabama in that Orange Bowl game as a -21 point under dog.. We were sitting on edge wondering if Belichick was going to play Brady or Bledsoe in the SB .. We knew what the comeback kid was like in Michigan being Big 10 fans and we also knew that if Brady got the start The Pats would win... Tom Brady SB MVP
These rams boys would love playing today, u can’t hit. Thr pats were physical and beasts! That was football! The game is changing so much that pretty soon it won’t even be fun anymore imo. I’m not saying that I have to watch people get hurt to enjoy myself, actually I hate seeing injuries to players of any sport or anything that keeps someone from doing what they love and work hard for, BUT I began watching football bec it was a great sport, great stress reliever for me, etc but with all the new rules it’s just not the same and getting much Worse really fast unfortunately. And I didn’t know who Mike Martz was when I was watching this live (bec this was literally my first season as a football fan) but I have a ton of respect for him simply for his comments on this video, he didn’t want to blame rules and refs or whatever, he just said they were out played. I love Troy Brown and know he didn't mean anything by it, but it really rubs me the wrong way when he says that Andruzzi's family was in the "firefighting business" it's not a business; it's a service, and thank God for all those who risk their lives. It's absolutely crazy to me there are still parts of this country with full volunteer squads. Anybody willing to risk their lives in that job should be compensated.
Credit bill and Romeo crennell for digging out their super bowl 25 game plan for the Patriots. Few rushers and more hitting across the Middle on the receivers and on faulk
What often gets overlooked that season is when the Rams played the giants that season the giants got physical with the rams. They disrupted with physicality just like the Pats did.
It doesn't get talked about but that rams defense really did keep them in the game otherwise it wouldn't have come down to the last possession of regulation for Tom & Company on offense. Thankfully the rams scored quickly because they definitely would have won that game in overtime if had the Pats not done anything.
Mike Martz might have been the dumbest & smartest offensive coach in history smart that he used his great athletes for what they were but dumb cause of all the empty formations 4 & 5 WR it got Kurt Warner killed at times you have to have pass blocking into help a TE or a RB at the expense of having 1 less WR out trying to catch a pass.
The Pats got physical and hit them in the mouth every play. Didn't allow free access like most of the other teams allowed. Only a hand full of teams I can remember played a physical style of defense against the greatest show on turf during that 3-year and the Pats were one of the few along with the Bucs and Giants. The Rams didn't know how to respond to getting hit in the mouth and I think they were mentally out of sorts.
As a patriots fan, i got a lot of respect for mike martz after watching this. The rest of the rams were clearly salty and still a bit arrogant, but he was perfectly objective the whole time.
Faulk detailing how the Pats physical CBs "top end speed" didn't match Bruce and Holt's and that's where they had an advantage - it's like, yeah Marshall, that's what f***ing Safeties are for.
More wisdom from Faulk: Saying Martz gets no credit for changing the NFL. Says people criticized Martz for passing too much but now everyone's doing it. The 2021 Rams ran more than the 2001 Rams and so did their opponents against them. Same with the Pats - 2021 Pats and their opponents had more rushing attempts than in 2001. What did happen is after the Ravens in 2000 won with the #1 Defense, the 2001 Pats D shut down the Greatest Show On Turf, the 2002 Bucs won with the #1 Defense, and the 2003 Pats won with the #1 Defense, the NFL changed the rules to open up the Passing game because defenses were clearly dominating at that point. It really had nothing to do with Martz.

i remember having serious debates in Connecticut with other fans if we continue with Brady or ride the rest out with Bledsoe.
Morons.
Bledsoe had a big arm and big numbers but he also threw all those back breaking INTs. He threw four against the Packers in SB XXXI.
@@j.m.5744 He threw a pick 6 right to Joey Porter who dropped it!! Bledsoe had less yards in 2 and a half quarters then Brady had in one in a half. He did very little aside from finishing his 1st drive that Tom started.
20 years after, the rams finally got some payback against Brady, only in a buccaneers uniform. And they would win their second super bowl
Brady's legacy was already cemented long beforehand.
That stat by the late Bryan Burwell about the Rams losing more game in a 5-year period than any franchise in the history of the NFL is still shocking to this day and beyond. You know you've hit an all-time low as a franchise when you have lost more games than the Browns, Lions, Jaguars, and Raiders. That is the definition of rock bottom in the NFL.
I believe the Browns matched that in the mid 2010s when they had that winless season. Either way, it was embarrassing.
@@whosaidthat84 I may have looked it up but I think the Rams still lost more games than the Winless Browns that year because during that same time period the Lions also went winless in 2008.

They were not use to getting hit in the mouth up to that point. They weren't ready for the physicality from the start. As Mike Tyson put: "Everyone has a game plan until they get hit in the mouth." When the Pats hit the Rams in the mouth it appeared they didn't know how to respond.
It’s sad how the Rams players are complaining about the physicality of the game like they couldn’t do the same thing back to the Patriots 😢

NFL films are the best. I love watching superbowls again by these guys. They do it so perfectly.
The footage by NFL films is stunning. There's something cinematic about these throwback Superbowls.
This was unprecedented, though. TB did a better job in 99 of slowing down STL. They just didnt have Brady to finish it off.
what it shows is when you know every play that's coming by recognizing the formations you can cause mistakes. This was theft. Rams were and will always be superior to the Patriots that year.
@@carl5381 The Pats hit them in the mouth and got physical. The difference was the turnovers.
@@carl5381 The Patriots played them earlier and tried blitzing and it didn't work so they changed it up and the results were different.

The Pats continuous pounding with their physical play clearly got to the Rams.
What a great game
