    I have the same problem with the passive entry system. I’ve never had that problem with any of the other land rovers ive had. It’s annoying. I have a few minor annoying things. The auto low/high beams won’t stay on the drive on right when selected. When the car is turned off they default back to the left. That makes them go crazy sometimes bc it’s confused. Have to select drive on right each time you start it up. With that being said I love mine! I’ve had a lot of land rovers over the years including my 1994 defender 90 I still have sitting next to my 2020 defender. So far this is one of my favorites if not my favorite I’ve owned and I’ve owned everything from Range Rover classics and defenders to brand new range rovers and everything in between. I believe my 2020 defender is my 18th rover. We have a 300 acre farm with some rough terrain and the new defender gets around extremely well. I’m happy with mine. It has 5000 miles on it now.

      To be fair Doug demuro bought a defender and drove it cross country twice and had bought it previously to tfl. No problems with it so I think you just see what you choose to see. There are far more rover haters in the US than any other brand it seems. So it's obvious if you post a video about issues it'll gain a ton if traction. Granted they got a new model for free thats more expensive and haven't had any issues with the new one.

    The keyless entry issue can be caused if you have the keyfob and your mobile phone in the same pocket, the radio waves emitted by the phone can block the signal from the fob to the car. I had the same problem with my Suzuki Vitara, when I put the phone and the fob in opposite pockets the keyless door entry system worked as it should.

    Excellent review, my friend. I’m considering trading in my 2020 Subaru on the Defender. There isn’t anything wrong with the Subaru Outback Touring at all, it’s just a little boring. I’ve never had a Land Rover (due to their record on poor reliability), and have focused on German cars (Mercedes S550, BMW X5 diesel, Porsche cars), but this Defender looks like it’s fun and super utilitarian. Plus, I think it can be fully used as our business vehicle and, if leased, it a fully deductible business expense. I’ll keep watching your review(s), and thank you for doing a great job on this.

    One of the best looking suvs on the road, I was going to buy one then....forums starting filling up with problems and My closest Dealershio is 3 hrs away. So guess it’s going to be a Lexus GX460 for now. Wish Tata motors would sell and allow this great looking suv to be designed mechanically from the likes of Toyota for example. Mare it bullet proof and they would sell a million of them in the states. Sad the risk is too much for the reward.

    Going to try and follow your channel. I wanted a Defender 90 back in the 90s. This new one looks so good. My main issue is being a Toyota/Lexus owner for 25 years. If I knew this new 110 was as reliable as Toyota it would be a no brainer. I don’t know that though. It’s on my list as next vehicle option, along with a Land Cruiser. Our neighbor has a new 110 as well so will be asking her about her experiences as well. I want it to do well. I really do... but I have concerns.

    • @fightingcarrot
      @fightingcarrot 3 года назад

      I think your concerns are totally legitimate. I just ordered a 2021 today and made the leap. My sales rep was very upfront and said that the early 2020s had issues. The new factory they spun up to build the new Defender had challenges due to COVID from supply chain to capacity etc so they definitely had spotty quality assurance. He told me for peace of mind get a 2021 model year. After mulling over it for over a month I went ahead and placed an order this morning! I’m beyond excited :):)

    Well filmed review here, very useful. I have owned two RR Sports, 2011 and current 2017, and now having tested your version of the Defender a couple of times I think that it is quite a different driving experience from the Sport. I would say that compared to the RR Sport, the Defender steering is slower, with a slightly larger steering wheel that is a bit more bus-like angle, so combined with the softer suspension with more travel, the Defender feels a bit wallowy and just a bit ponderous doing tight corners. At speed it tracks well as you noted, has a nice snarl with the six, and is incredibly quiet, very little difference from the Range Rover which surprised me. The main difference I see is that the Defender has much more capable suspension, with more wheel travel, and softer and progressive damping - you can hit virtually any size bump or hole and it just floats through, where the RR Sport would do it, but feedback more of a jolt to the driver. If I lived in more mountainous terrain, doing steep offroad climbs etc, the Defender would be my choice. For my mix of highway, urban, and country gravel roads, I still prefer the more nimble driving characteristics of the RR Sport. Note the full size Range Rover would be somewhere in between... perhaps even a bit closer to the Defender, but without its amazing suspension.

    • @LDB5337
      @LDB5337  3 года назад

      Thanks. I too would give the RR an edge on the nimbleness. My last RRS was the supercharged, which I was tempted into after watching a Top Gear review when they put it around the track timed against a John Cooper Works Mini. I would love to see the Defender be reviewed on a track, at speed. I don’t have a nearby track or the driving skill to do it proper justice. I would echo your comments on the differential in feeling, though relative to Defender vs RRS. Just watched another video where a comparison to the old Defender was made. One of the new Defender’s strength was the tightness of the turning circle. One of my other cars is a Mini Cooper S so not to that level, but Defender tighter and less wallowy in the turns then many large cars. Thanks again for the quality comment.

    Mr. Cole, is this a comfortable/plush car over bad pavement? We live in the city where the roads are covered with potholes, steel sheets, and other unpleasant imperfections. How would this Defender fair over such conditions?

    • @LDB5337
      @LDB5337  3 года назад

      Good question. I would say the ride is firm, averagely so. You would feel a pot hole for sure and steel sheets would translate into the cabin, but no more than a usual car. The country roads where I live are inconsistent and do have gaps and pot holes. The car takes them well. There is more road feedback than a Range Rover, but not extreme or concerning. Your best advice would be to book a test drive and see how you get on.

    I can’t work out whether you’ve got the MHEV version of the petrol straight six in your SE or not ? I’m surprised that you’re experiencing stop-start issues with a 48-volt belt-driven starter ...unless that version hasn’t made it to the US yet ? Or maybe this is the usual V1.0 approach of JLR where they take their usual multi-attempt method to calibrate their drivetrains?? It’d be good to know.

    • @LDB5337
      @LDB5337  3 года назад

      Thanks for the tech notes and thoughts. It is the P400 MHEV 3.0L 6 cylinder. I’ll have to investigate further re the starter. As I understand the auto start stop draws energy when braking (so further friction) to provide the restart capacity. I turn it off a lot of the time and the rhythm improves over time. Ie I have learned to live with it, but as you said would be good to know. Thanks again

    • @BertoniBertone
      @BertoniBertone 3 года назад

      Alfred Cole Thanks for the info. I’ll be mindful to test this soon since I’m looking at a Defender too. If you want the 90 with a petrol MHEV here in the UK you’ve got to get the ‘top’ X version at GBP £ 77 k ...though the ‘cheaper’ 6-pot diesel MHEVs are available across the board. I was under the impression that 48-volt systems had cured that re-start ‘jolt’ you get on most stop-start systems. It may be LR already have an update to resolve your current experience ? Fingers crossed.

      @LDB5337  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. As I said in the video, my view is that the car is (will be) superb in most conditions, but relies on the electronics to perform the right role for the right circumstance. Air suspension is great for me, and not a lot of sand dunes in Northeast Ohio. If you watch a couple of Landrover’s own videos and the longer journalist films crossing parts of Africa you can see the car performs. But going out alone anywhere extreme requires assurance of a plan B. Hope you are planning to buy one. Thanks again.

I, have a 120 mile commute down to my cruiser mostly on the M5 every weekend and the choice is either go for a bonkers car which I fancy for purely selfish reasons ...a one owner Jaguar XJ12 series 3 1990 with just 57k on the clock for £11k or buy this Slovakian built techno marvel contraption . But I dont want to be caught on the motorway with the engine warning light or the safe mode giving me just 30mph nor the appalling "tek it or leave it pal" reputation of the JLR dealers so Im going to buy the V12 Jag XJ series 3 and I just know its the right decision , I wont lose money, wont lose my patience , wont want to kick the shit out of the faulty defender computer and I wont have blown £65k on something that will be worth less than my shirt in a years time sitting a JLR workshop whilst the grease monkeys scratch their heads about why the Defender after less than 300 miles , wants another engine .

      Thanks for taking time to leave a comment and don’t worry about upsetting me as I only drive the Defender, I don’t sell them. Good luck with the Jag option as also great cars. From experience of having had an XJS V12 which used to give me around 7mph, and an XJ Sport make sure service history is good. I also in 2020 test drove the Jaguar XE Dynamic so if you are a big Jaguar fan it is worth a look. Superb driving balance and slippery quick. Just watch the speed cameras on the M5.

    4:33; Says it all. The new Defender is great for the suburban jungle as well as some pretty challenging offroad courses/obstacles but cannot match the dependability of a Landcruiser, Prado, Patrol or G-Class in extreme environments. Great review!

      Thanks for the comment. I should also expand to clarify my thoughts in the review. This car has significant electronic and sensing technology so is more than capable of handling extreme environments, but the point being that it relies on that technology. Similarly to a commercial plane. Technology keeps it in the sky but a strong maintenance and support regime keeps the technology working. For the Defender the presence of all this technology makes the car of immense value, and to Max’s comment it is well placed and great for the suburban jungle.

    I hope Defender and British cars in general succeed in US because they are not very reliable and popular in Europe. I'm not very optimistic, considering unexperienced Indian owner of Land Rover.

      Thanks for the note. In North America I see a strong commitment to the brand and a strong focus to customer appreciation. I was one of the first people to have the opportunity to own a Defender and Rory Beattie, Vice President, Customer Service at Land Rover North America, took time out to send me a personal video message to say thank you. Unexpected and appreciated. The sales team at my local dealer, Landrover Solon, are professional and we have purchased 5 cars over recent years. My humble view is that Tata’s ownership has provided the investment to take the brand forward; holding true to the design elements of both Landrover and Jaguar. Both ranges have strong offerings and still feel quintessential British. I see myself owning the Defender for many years, but also know that my next car (whenever that is) will come from the same stable. I am optimistic. Thanks again for your comment.

      British car by an Indian Company, build in Slovakia with parts from different EU countries. Otherwise the quality would be different.

      Al Ser - yes, it is owned by an Indian company, but that has been a net gain for LR. I have read that LR remained independent for engineering and design. Tata money helped make them better.

    Fuel economy in city? whats the real number

    • @LDB5337
      @LDB5337  3 года назад +1

      Real numbers. I live in a more suburban area. Short trip to work, 20.3mpg (14.7 miles at average 37 mph). More freeway, motorway 23.4mpg (20.1 miles at average 46mph). Longer mainly freeway, motorway with some mixed, 22.8mpg (116.6 miles at average 66mph). The Landrover app helps me track all my trips in detail. Hope that helps. Don’t have a direct city number right now. As I said not disastrous and not fantastic. Somewhere in between and given this is a P400 engine I am good with the numbers.

    Fanboy review. Land Rover was a poorly built car when it was UK owned, now that Tata owns it, it did not improve. The only thing I like about it is not wanting one.

    Had 10 defenders from 98 to 14 ,so i obviously liked the cars,it was a working vehicle and a second hand value like no other! All of them caused some kind of problems even if they were so simple mechanical! Bad quality material corrosion after less than a year ! and badly put together for sure but charming! The new one seems more safe and comfortable but i would never trust the brand in terms of reliability,luxury for me is to feel safe,and completely trust my vehicle.
    Nowadays i have a hilux but its a different kind of vehicle there is not any luxury over it and its boring to drive but rock solid and build like a tank! Its ugly too.
    Congrats to your car! A cool head turner and i hope L R got it right put together,but again if your in to reliability go 🇯🇵 japanese! Thats my experience!

    Nice vid, but you said a lot when you said it, if you're going outback, you wouldn't take it,!
    Says it all, if you genuinely feel like that, then it ain't no Defender!!
    Its a Discovery/evoke clone, not a Defender!!
    Cos Defenders should be designed and built with the "outback" at the top of its list of requirements, then make it comfy, luxurious and stylish, but ONLY after you've made it the King of the Off road!
    Sadly, looks like a Chelsea tractor to me!

      Thanks for the comment. On this video I wanted to mainly speak live rather than voice over, and used my GoPro8 with its directional mic. I also wanted to have people hear some of the road noise to have a sense that there was some, but that it was generally quiet. I’ll try a Rode mic on the next review to see if that cleans it up and gives a better balance.

      @@LDB5337 i appreciate the explanation. lol I think that the mount location of the camera you were using is magnifying the road noise and sort of cancelling your voice audio. Because if it isnt the road noise is quite terrible.

      Time for an earlier model Pathy Pat! Ours has kept us safe in very rugged and remote parts for years now. We call it our Nissan LRV (Landcruiser Recovery Vehicle)! Actually, there are a lot of great choices for worry free off-roading in remote places - just not so many newer ones IMHO. Far too much electronics these days! About 10 years ago as DINKS when we could afford just about any car (perhaps not a Veyron), my wife and I chose to do 25,000 km of off-roading and camping around Oz in a '04 Suzy GV. Rock solid it was, cost nothing and we hardly lost any $ when we sold it. Would never take a new Defender anywhere near the places we went to. Oh for the simple life... Cheers from Sydney - Dave :-)

    It all went pear shaped when people started to refer to landrovers as cars..on the farm where they properly belonged, you either took the landy or the car..now look at it, no mud or dog hairs anywhere..end of an era..rubbish
