Why Would Anyone Buy The NEW Land Rover Defender?

- Thanks to Lookers Land Rover West London, I finally get my hands on the new Land Rover Defender. Being a huge fan of the 'old' shape Defender, I've been apprehensive about getting behind the wheel of this new car.

The quality of this channel remains extremely high. Just a joy to watch. Sam comes across as a great guy that I'd love to drink a beer with and chat cars. Keep it up, Sam!
Glad you enjoy it!
Agree
he definitely does seem to be the most genuine "car youtuber". most of them put up some weird shoutty/obnoxious personality
U.K - this thing is HUGE
U.S - guess they are bringing a new hatchback
It is pretty big, bigger than the new bronco
“Ginormous” lol.
We have a range rover, an X7, a suburban. This thing is a midsize at best in the US. I have a deposit on a 90. That thing is gonna be TINY for the US.
H Mann that scares me.
Hiro Protagonist wouldn’t even fit their roads 😂
Sam, I think you need to come to terms with the fact that Land Rover have given up on the traditional (agricultural) market - The Japanese stole that a long while ago with 4x4 Pick-ups which were far more reliable and were difficult to break. If you look at the last few years of the (old) Defender market place, they were all specc'd-up to the eyeballs with 'outdoor kit' so that they could safely cruise the mean streets of Chelsea.....(until they were stolen due to crap security measures!)
This car is very much aimed at these urbanites and those who (quite rightly) detest the fifth version of the Discovery.
Disco 5 is dead in the water now that this car is launched
ls the Discovery 5 one of the best looking vehicles Land rover designed?!?!?!?!?
I thought I was going to go head over heels for the Defender. I'm a huge fan of LR since the Ford sured them up. What I learned is that I don't mind spending the money on luxury, but these Wrangler/Gladiator people who are spending $50-60k+ on rugged beaters are insane. The "status" trend is dumb. Get something for your money. Now pardon me while I go and spec my Bronco to over $50k to get it max ready to race over and sand dunes, and I'll never race over sand dunes.
Bang on.
You do realize that the Bronco failed on the Rubicon Trail
“Yuppie country folk” and driving down Kings Road was already a big part of the old Defender hence the existence of companies like Twisted and Urban.
Love what Twisted do with Land Rovers!
Exactly the days of it being a worker were long gone. From the early 2000s onwards they were a fashion item. This new ones no different I can see it being popular with people who do outside activities as opposed to off road enthusiasts. No carpets to worry about but still all the toys and road manners of other SUVs on the market. If I had the money I’d have one
@@West4ea they'd be no fashion statement if I had one or a Discovery, they would be mobile toolboxes and skips 😀
Alex West old Defenders were and are working vehicles for people like Farmers and Gamekeepers. Proper commercial vehicles for towing and operating off road. Utilitarian is the word. Newer Land Rovers are the ones for posers. The commercial 4x4 market has moved to pickups now. There is no chance of anyone buying a new Defender as a commercial vehicle
@@JesterEric You do know Land Rover are producing a more basic cheaper commercial version with blanked out rear windows and no rear seats similar to the old Commercial Discovery 4.
I quite like that you can spec it with steel wheels so that certain people in the family don't keep curbing the alloys.
Yes, I hate when the kids curb the wheels when they are only supposed to go to the mall, lol
The name “Freelander” seems a better choice in it’s availability for the vehicles target market & audience. While suspending the use of the name Defender .As the Grenadier fills the gap Old Defender left
4:16 how I describe my girlfriend
I believe that Sam has talked himself into buying a new defender lol
Nnnnnathan10 no worries, next week he’s gonna tell tony about it and he’ll get roasted again XD in all seriousness tho, if I live in the countryside and have the money to buy a fun car, I would seriously consider this. Kind of cool being modern and old school at the same time
You can hear the doubt in him
What's he talking about it looks way better than the old farm stock. The front and real lights and pillars are the best part of it. Yes it is way too big though !!
Have a look at the experience of The Fast Lane Car, then if you still want one I'll find out the lovely jumper with sleeves that tie at the back!
Base spec 3 door for me with the steel wheels. Think I’d probably still steer around puddles though lol 😂
Going to the preview of the 90 this Friday and my wife is excited about a car for the first time in her life!
If you owned an older defender (like myself) and doubt the new defender, Go and drive one.
The dog's cute with that defender. Really fits!
I also love how they offer multiple options for the defender including the side ladder, etc.
Love the new Defender as a car, it’s comfortable and it’s as capable as any other Land Rover. But, at that price, it ain’t a defender to me.
Ioan Evans its been a long time since defenders were 'cheap' cars. Second hand they are still expensive with bad examples setting you back 8k. The 'old' defender when it was new was still very expsensive.
ruclips.net/video/YL-_Z9aKtkE/видео.html
*Cries in North American*
Russell It was ok new, I could justify the 25K starting price- granted, not at all cheap for what it was 😂 but a lot better than the rest of the Land Rover range. Depends what cheap is, you can get a decent TD5 SW for 12 to 15K, which I think is ok dependent on how well it’s been looked after. You’re right though, It is a rip off for bad examples when they’re worth around 8K, especially with rotten chassis
@@xPUR3xSHOTZx That's because of an over inflated used market; in reality it's hard to justify what some people want for second hand motors these days.
Another reason I love Sam is that we’re not seeing the same 30mins of regurgitated spec lists for the T50. What relief.
It deserves so much more than a life of school runs and lunch dates
Personally I love the new defender, however it is roughly the same price as a discovery. So in a way the same car in different clothes.
If I found a new defender on my driveway, I wouldn’t be upset.
I think you're spot on- this car will be bought by yuppy families. In other words, it's really the new and improved Discovery.
ruclips.net/video/YL-_Z9aKtkE/видео.html
Seen loads of farmers with them already.
Funny people think this is just made for farmers and not exploring. I have seen farmers with the new model here though in the UK.
Land Rover Smart(phone on wheels)fender. For a vehicle that was originally drawn in sand, 72 years on - now look at it and ppl used to moan about electrics galore from 1998 onwards when the Td5 engine was launched, nowadays some are probably a bunch of f*cking hypocrites.
In basic spec, it will be used properly trust me.
If people buy something to be a workhorse they will use it for that purpose...
Obviously if someone buys a defender for £80,000 then they’re not going to be parking it in a hedge and driving it through a sheep field to pick up 5 filthy dogs...
Everybody: GMA T.50

Sam I'm looking at a suv from land rover
That's what separates him from the rest hyped and boring youtubers
I would agree with you but minus Twiggy. Two noticeable observations on the Defender is that square between the C and D pillars and the enormous barn door relieving the boot. Good help the person if someone parks too close. Another subject, reliability???
@@juanmanuelargento I agree. This channel is such a breath of fresh air with every video
@@thomaszay1843 we dont talk about that shhh
I am in the U.S., and I had test driven the new Defender two days ago. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! I am having one built to my specs starting in October, and it will be delivered to me in December 2020. 😉😍
I’ve recently done the same, but after at least 10 attempts at configuring, I can’t seem to create one less than $80k usd
I'm pretty sure the specs are decided on by the manufacturer. If you have a car to YOUR specs, then it's not the manufacturer's design, is it?
Aa I used to be a technician for Land Rover when the time they launched the Discovery 3, entire body lines are very similar to this all new Defender. Anyway the Discovery is an excellent off-roader. Thumb up to new Defender. Wish Land Rover to defend the Defender for the next 70 years!!!!
I’ve just picked up a 10 yr old Disco 3 HSE and love it, the engine is as smooth as butter and inside everything I need, whilst plenty of room in the back for the dogs! Best all round Land Rover out there imo and value for money (well after the previous owner replaced the gearbox, entire suspension and airbags)!
Land Rover needs to bring a new entry level variant of the Defender with bare minimum features, no fancy screens, etc. Completely agree with your point that Land Rover could have named it something else. Great video nevertheless. And on a different note, an episode of Behind the Glass dedicated to the holy trinity of hypercars would be great as well.
Maverick that wont work, because without the air suspension it would loose its offroad capabilities.
LR have done this. The Defender 90 on coil springs. Entry level model. Steel wheels. And Commercial versions available late 2020
Stephen Fogarty thats true but due to the missing air suspension it is going to be worse off road.
Halfdome05 D90 can also b bought with air suspension if u prefer this.
Would love to see one of these take on a more rugged Drive the World Series! Another great video Sam!
Maybe one day! Thanks for watching
Nooo, take a bronco for that 😁 in case they decide to sell it in Europe
Google it.There is many video

Check out Carfection review. Awesome
I was looking forward to this, especially after the 40 videos of the T50 yesterday.
I saw this car in person and it’s actually a beast
Would be great if LR could arrange a proper off roading session for you in this to test what it's capabilities really are.
So many manufacturers bragging about 'Retro' inspired designs , love the way this things looks in a modern funky kind of way.
It's definitely way more up-market than the original ever was!
F40 Have you not watched the videos from Namibia?
I really like the new Defender. It appears very capable off road. There is also a commercial version that should be available now.
My family have owned Land Rovers from the 60s, 70s and 80s, and as much as I love the previous versions, the fact remains that:-
1.0 People were not buying them and the vehicle doesn't conform to current standards
2.0 The Aluminium alloy panels on a steel Frame was way too expensive to build
3.0 The interior was cramped and heavily compromised.
4.0 For Land Rover to survive they need a model that will last (with regular updates) for the next two decades, unlike Mercedes LR cannot afford a nostalgic Halo Project.
Owners of the previous Defender need not worry, there are loads of companies re imaging and rebuilding them to new showroom specs. There are also so much spares around an owner could easily do a 'triggers broom' if they wanted to.
I live in a 'posh toff' area and have seen 3 of these already in the town. 1 of the 3 I've seen was in a matte olive green and it did look pretty awesome... My first thought was that there was an outbreak and the military had rolled into town until I noticed the tiny 'yummy mummy' sitting 2 inches away from the wheel.
Was she looking through the steering wheel as well?!?!?!?
A discovery that should not wear a defender badge. But thats okay as it is not likely to roam far from a city.
Were you involved in the design or launch, sir? Do you know what platform the discovery is made on? Do you know what this is made on?
Umair Qureshi it does look like a discovery 4 it’s what I the discovery 5 should have been
I had the defender experience for 8 years , which survived kids and dogs. Everything is subjective , so if you like the new one okay. JLR may even make money out of them. Doubt it will be an icon in 50 years time. Funny if the original outlasts it or wears an EV conversion very well.
Thanks Sam for getting Twiggy a car harness
I can't imagine farmers or the army using this. Another Chelsea Tractor... A very nice one, but still a Chelsea Tractor.
Right now it does look very slick and fresh. But, as time passes and Land-Rover updates the rest of its vehicles, this Defender will likely age to feel more authentic and utilitarian.
Farmers hadn't bought brand new the old one for a long time. Like it or not the icon had to move on. This places itself as a great replacement for the Discovery 4.
Maybe in the UK but I am sure farmers here in Australia will use them. Surely all 4WD’s in the UK are “Chelsea tractors”....let’s face it.
@@che6mw1 You should tell all the farmers near me driving around in 14 and 15 plate Defenders that they are driving mirage then...I see loads of them every day!
Ineos are in talks with the military.

I love the looks of this car. And love it even more after seeing it in the ad where it rolls down.

This is pure ugly 🤮
Crackin review Sam 🙂
It's nice to hear a 'Personal' opinion, rather than just a review on what it's got or not got, so thanks for that 🙂👍🏻
My opinion, being an ex-farmer, and working for the National Trust building team in the North Yorkshire dales, I literally lived 90% of my time in or with the older Defender's, and I loved them 😊
I had a TD5 90 for work, fully kitted out and constantly pulling a trailer,
And personally I owned a series 3 110 as our family vehicle, and sure they weren't luxurious, but my god were they capable 😉👍🏻
And I knew I could trust in the fact it would take any amount of abuse I through at them, and I definitely feel that's what these new one's have lost 😣😥
There's no way farmer's are going to shell out 60k-70k on a vehicle that's going to spend 99% of it's life covered in shite, and getting knocked about by livestock 😕 and surely that was landrovers target audience?? Or it certainly used to be, I definitely feel the new one is aimed at the soccer mum's, doing school runs and shopping with the girl's 😒
I'm sure landrover won't loose out, and will sell plenty,
But they were seen as the backbone of the British farming industry, or known as the best rugged around the world vehicle like the iconic 'Camel Safari' race
There's no chance these ugly thing's will be doing that, and that's lost the whole ethos of the vehicle in my eye's 🥺😔
Thanks again for the review Sam 🙂
All the best,
Mark 👍🏻
Completely agree. Surely you would buy approved used Range Rover for half the price?
@@fridajohansson6307
Absolutely agree 👍🏻
These haven't been made or designed for the type of Rugged, Off-Road action that they were known for 😣
These are now a luxurious SUV, targeted at the Yuppies and Soccer mom's 😒😥
Check out the Ineos Grenadier
Michael Davis Doesn’t exist.
I know it is not in production yet but what is your point?
I love how one of the complaints was it was too tall. ground clearance is kind of the point in an off road vehicle, made me laugh Sam love your work.
That’s the point, it’s really tall but doesn’t have any ground clearance or wheel travel. The maximum ground clearance under the chassis is lower on its highest setting than a fully loaded old defender. The SAE ground clearance isn’t published but it’s very poor. The real issue is the very low hanging suspension arms will prevent movement in hard ruts and that the exhaust is unprotected and is the first part to come into contact with the ground as it hangs underneath the rear differential. The incredibly soft and vulnerable bodywork is also very low to the ground. You can no longer pick your way over stones and stumps by driving over them. The cross linking of the air suspension is only a marketing exercise as there’s virtually no real world articulation due to the tiny size of the pipes and the ridiculously short suspension arms don’t help either.
Too tall with very little ground clearance
Love the new Defender. I'm glad Rover didn't just tart up a old Defender and call it a day. Looking forward to ordering a new 90 and putting some meaty tires on it
Next video: I bought an Ineos Grenadier
Noah Bowie Maybe in ten years the way things are going....
I've bought a wheel barrow (w/ diff-lock) :P
I think the Greadier not being built in Britain is going to lose it's appeal to most buyers.
That is even if it ever gets built anywhere.
Going to be a confusing world if there are grenadiers and Defenders going around.
The one that isn't a Defender looks like a Defender, and the one that is a Defender doesn't look like one.
Grenadier is going to end up being the same kindof thing, rugged aesthetic in a lux package. Yeah itll have solid axles but the drivetrain will put off a lot of utility buyers and home mechanics. And I am skeptical of the price being anywhere near the old defender.
@@Yarxov unfortunately nowadays it's almost impossible to sell a vehicle with a rugged, old school diesel engine, like I imagine you are talking about. this is why ineos are going for an engine/drivetrain which is both proven and reliable, but also meets emission standards.
In regard to price, Ineos have never stated that it will be a budget vehicle. they have always said that it will be priced similarly to the new defender, but that it will be a genuinely rugged vehicle, with top quality parts to enable it to do the things that the old defender could, but probably even better.
I'm excited for it, but realistic about what they can achieve.
As someone who has lived in the highlands for their entire lives, the locals who have had old defenders in the past will be moving to more conventional pickups and the new defenders seen in the highlands will be wealthy city folk who go to their holiday home in the highlands once a year. Or prehaps again wealthy people southerners who retire for the so called ‘rugged highland lifestyle’. It’s a shame but in truth its probably the reality.
@Jkinsg92 If I had to guess, it would be total lack of awareness of the local culture, history and ettiquete; in fact total inability to comprehend that there's even a difference from say Surrey...
Add to that the negative impact that an influx of wealthy individuals moving to an area but not really joining the community can have for the local population, and then the disproportionate impact just a handful of oblivious tourists can have on the very limited infrastructure in large parts of rural Scotland...
Or Culloden.
One of the two.
I want to love it, wish the front was a bit sharper but there’s a lot I like about it. They couldn’t use the older defender base, like the G-wagon, as the old def was too badly flawed. I look forward to seeing one in the flesh and driving it.
Let's be honest, the car could not have been the same exact car as the old Defender (sorry Defender enthusiasts). This is primarily due to CO2 emissions and regulations. However, even though I loved the old defender, I do accept change and if I could I would have a Defender 90 in all black, with the smallest rims and offroad tires and with the front row extra optional seat, please! Also, the 3.0L engine seems to be more than adequate although a 2.0L hybrid used in the Range Rover P400e would have been more environmentally friendly. Hope we can agree Sam! As ever, excellent video! Keep up the great work and we will continue to follow :)
Regarding its off road credentials, I'm guessing you didn't watch Henry Catchpoles review then......
Expensive yes but incredible off road, good on road, awesome design & practically make this well worth the money
This is a joke right....? Horrendous reliability guaranteed. Off road capability more A6 allroad than old defender. It’s just an SUV not even remotely a defender replacement.
@@taranis616 ok so reliability is a concern but it is better at off roading than old Defender thanks to all tech
Super funny seeing it reviewed in its “realistic use scenario.” Refreshing to see someone acknowledge that instead of pretending that they would actually Jeep it all over the place! 😂
I love it, I think it's a fairly good mix of usability, ruggedness and creature comfort. I own an Evoque and when the defender gets here to Panama I intend to look at the 90 and 110 as a replacement I love going to the beach for diving and I see the Defender as the perfect companion as I can get the equipment without worrying about the sand, water, etc
Some chunky tires and a roofrack it would diffently help with the looks 😁
I went on a test drive in the new Defender and I loved it. Has the feeling of a Jeep or truck but with a exceptional interior. In America, it’s only about $10k more than a specced up wrangler so it’s not insanely expensive here.
All the examples around me I can get my hands on are 80k. Not exactly Jeep territory. And Jeep's are stupid overpriced to start with.
Ryan yeah I guess it totally depends on market. I agree though I cannot believe people pay almost $60k for a wrangler.
$10K more than the Rubicon..is that all..
merseybeat1963 in base configuration yes. Obviously you can make the defender $100k if you want
When it comes to real serious off-roading this thing just looks wheels up in the air and has no articulation while it relies on traction control hopefully doesn't get an air leak in the suspension. If you take a Rubicon to its limits with front and rear locked and sway bar disconnects engaged it will walk places this thing could never dream of. And sad thing is both with stock tires we will, we'll have a little meat with sidewalls this thing will pop tires like on tfl off road video. It's a joke. Land Rover just makes a bunch of luxury things now all this is a Range Rover with a big square body
Great video Sam. I definitely love it - I didn’t think I would because old Defender was one of the best cars for almost everything I have ever owned, but having now seen 2 new Defenders on the road I am very tempted.
Most young parents with young kids can't afford this... I hope LR has other potential buyers in mind.
LR never aimed any of their cars at "Most" . They're for the top 10% and they'll sell thousands even in this disastrous climate
"Most"? LR will have done serious market research.
They should’ve just been honest and named it the Chelsea Tractor rather than new defender.
I've been super up to date with your podcasts and videos Sam. Pretty entertaining I have to say :)
Glad you enjoy it!
I'm an American. Owned Land Rover series vehicles from April 1964 for the next 30 years without ever not having a Land Rover in my personal stable. I've yet to see the new Defender in the flesh. I had a difficult time when Land Rover Limited decided to change the name of their original 4x4 product from Land Rover to Defender. I'm not critical of changing the company's name from Rover to Land Rover, as the Rover car ceased being a true Rover, in my opinion, when the P6 was replaced by the SD-1. (I've owned several P6 Rovers and two SD-1 3500's.) I can see the logic behind the use of the name "Land Rover" to represent various lines of four-wheel drive vehicles. And, over time, I grew to appreciate the need (in some folks' minds) for using the original vehicle's name as the new corporate name, which, in those same minds, implied the need for an all-new name for the company's original 4x4, hence DEFENDER came into being. Had I had the responsibility of deciding on the name of the products about 30 years ago, I'd have said, "Let's stick with the name `Land Rover' as the namesake vehicle of our corporation." Range Rover and than Discovery would have been separate modes made by the corporation named Land Rover. (I'm 72, but I'll carry the name Rover, representing the old pre-B.L. corporation, to the grave with me. British Leyland, later B.L., carried some advantages for Rover, but, overall, during the B.L. period the product quality of Rover's various vehicle lines took a huge dip, again, in my opinion.) I have serious doubts that the new Defender will be as good off the road---and have as long a product lifetime---as the old Series vehicles and the Old Defender had. Independent suspension and air bags are not going to hold up in extreme use the way coil springs or leaf springs will hold up. (And yes, years ago, in my late teenage years, I broke several main leafs on the front suspension of my Series IIA Land Rover that I drove the most in that period of time. How did I do so? Flying Land Rovers through the air. Believe me, while I broke springs flying around, those springs took a hell of a beating before finally breaking. I also had a Koenig PTO winch on the front of various Land Rovers in years past.) New Defender. I plan on renting one for a week or two if I can find one to rent within the next year or two. I do not believe, however, that I'm likely to purchase a new Defender for my own use. Now that Defender has been tamed so much, however, perhaps it's the car we'll we'll select to replace my wife's 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland diesel with when we sold her Jeep 17 months ago just prior to moving from Utah to Hawaii. I've been driving a Jeep JL Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon since 2012. I no longer abuse cars. My Rubicon's only problem over the past eight plus years was when its factory navigation system had to be replaced under warranty. My Rubicon has never had a broken half shaft; with 33,000 miles on the clock it still has its original speedometer; there are no oil leaks; Rain and car washes never has resulted in rain getting into the interior. As a Jeep driver, I've never had a front or rear differential fail on one of our Jeeps. (The Grand Cherokee did have problems with its air suspension.) If the New Defender will be as reliable as my Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, I can easily be talked into buying one for my wife if I can find a way to help her think that "we're getting it just for her"! Great commentary on New Defender! I wish Land Rover Limited and Jaguar very well.
Father of two with a black labrador here, this is perfect, kids can't trash it, dog can't eat it, bikes and stuff fit in it without worrying about tearing a seat, about 20k to expensive for mere mortals though. Would of taken a dynamically worse car if the price point moved, when's the commercial version out?
If you want a smaller cheaper one get a Suzuki Jimny but personally I love the look of it
For me the defender is my next car after my discovery 4, the new disco 5 is to much of a Range Rover now.

They should just offer a less luxury, stripped down version that costs less.
They do. Get the entry level model with steel wheels. Commercial versions available late 2020
@@StephenFogarty2023 Yes I see there is the "Hard Top' commercial version ( VAT applicable therefore ) but do you know if they have drummed down the interior luxury look?
P L Not enough info on Commercial versions yet. Will have to wait until LR release more info and spec and pricing.
@@StephenFogarty2023 there is some info about, seems pricing starts at £35500 plus VAT (so more than the basic non commercial model) and won't have rear seats so 3 in the front option only. Coil sprung an option though for those who are using it regularly over rugged terrain and don't want air suspension!
P L the Commercial version D90 and D110 can b a 3 seater via front jump seat if u want this. Neither version has rear seats, so that the rear has max cargo space, which makes sense for a Commercial vehicle. If u want 5 seats, buy a basic version of D110 or D90.

I agree the 90 looks better but still have the same overall thoughts about it as the 110
So as someone that live on the border of suburbia and rural in the Northeast USA I can see a few of my neighbors/friends getting these to thrash around on the weekend and still be able to haul the kiddos around to school. As for me I've been looking into getting one bare bones to just thrash.

I go to Daylesford most weekends and I have to agree with Sam the place will be full of 110s & 90s this Autumn along with London folk in very clean shiny green wellies ........ PS Love Twiggy

In my opinion they shouldn’t have revived this, in the same way BMW should have never “modernised” the Mini. Everything that made these special and unique was how terrible it was to drive and how you could just abuse it. Great video Sam but I feel conflicted, I just don’t see a need for this in the line up - it’s lost any character 🤷🏻♂️ If this had a Suzuki badge on it, all would make sense

Its mostly bc of co2, a hybrid or electric model would be way cheaper.
Come to think of it, why wouldnt u want an electric off-roader??
@@katchaontheflipside will see when rivian makes their all eletric pick up in ohio usa 🇺🇸 suppose to be a off road monster and on road cumuter. Plus make a work truck in a van for postal workers.
@@fridajohansson6307 lol, u do realise the UK ( which builds land rovers) is still in the EU right? So no tariffs. And leaving the EU would be the dumbest thing to do for any nation, especially one so reliant on trade like NL
@@jamespugh That looks cool! Might be too large for european roads tho.
I think Land Rover nailed it with this , once you drive it you'll love it. Trust me it's a belter. Your such an old man before your time.
I think people forget how expensive the old defender was before it was discontinued and that design was ancient. The new Defender comes really well equipped for the base price, and the build quality is SOLID. If people want a really utilitarian car that they don't care about beating up, they can get a mitsubishi pickup or a used defender or something else. This car needs to exist the way it does for Land Rover to make money, and whether outside observers like it or not, it will sell.
That silver two-tone makes the front end look WAY worse than it otherwise would (imo).
I think it's brilliant. Land Rover were always going to have a difficult time doing a like for like replacement for the old Defender as that car was a product of its time in history. I think they nailed it, these things have proven they can do all and more that the old Defender could and it brings the interior, the handling and technology up to 21st Century standards. I think they should bring out a much cheaper version with less luxury and more of a wash down interior so that farmers and the like aren't worried about damaging the interior. I also really like the look of it I think they really captured the essence of the old Defender and made it look 100% more stylish. I would love one if it was a full EV, I believe there may be one coming in the future!? We have to start taking climate change seriously.
2:03 Twiggy was really happy to move to the shade there! Very expensive shade machine if you ask me ;)
I was hoping to see more of Daylesford, I just ordered some of their Chateau Louebe Rose, very nice it was too! Interesting review on Defended, I plan to get the 90 base spec for local winter runs! Hope your well, love the pup. Phil
I think the conclusion to this is that you bought an X3 M40i. Same price, much faster, better to drive, 6 cylinders, and still four-wheel drive for light off-roading. The similar engined P400 is £20k more - a big premium for new Defender looks.
Too expensive. Too many electronics. Old Defender forever. They killed an icon. What a shame.
@prasannaiks naiks I bought two, both increased in value and I made good money if I sold them, but I never will. On the other hand the new one loses half it's value once you roll out the showroom. That's the difference.
@prasannaiks naiks It is yet another variant of Discovery. Not really a commercial utility vehicle, which was what the old Defender was. Land Rover has given away that market, without even trying to defend it, to the ubiquitous pickup truck. Whole swathes of the countryside and utility companies, police and coastguard have dumped their ancient old 90 and 110 for pickups. Discovery5, Defender and RR are cannibalising each models sales. That must be a huge problem for JLR because their main competitor is their own vehicles and they are all roughly in the same price zone.
how is the wind noise on the highway?
Sam - I think you’re right with what you said BUT, the main issue with this car is not the interior getting trashed it’s the exterior. The old defender, like you said you’d just chuck it in a hedge and bash it around on the outside and you wouldn’t care as much, but this new defender is a 50k car, you’re going to want to look after it. That’s the problem with it, they should’ve made it a lot cheaper and a lot more basic for those people to just throw around and abuse. If this is what it’s going to be it shouldn’t be called a defender imo
I reckon LR need to make a stripped down basic version so it isn't "too much" Interesting to see what the 90 will be like as well as the industrial / work variants will be like.
All the people crying about it “not being a real Defender” either had never actually driven an old Defender (because they were crap) or would never buy one of these anyway!... LR know what sells
Lol... how many of these are they gonna sell? Doubt very many at that price. Plus no military / utility companies are gonna be interested in it.
I've run a few XC90's...drove a defender a few years ago, was blown away by how functional, simple and sturdy it was. This year I bought a Land Rover. 1966 series 2a...beat up old thing, will be putting it to work and keeping it running. If they'd have updated the old defender platform instead of the compete departure that this is I might have bought one. I don't really understand the many options currently offered by LR...disco, range rover, RR sport and now defender...all seem basically the same to me and none are what I am after. An old platform defender with a few much needed updates I'd part with my cash for...Spent my money on the used market instead. I'm sure these appeal to some people and my views are obviously just based on my personal experience.
@@Blackmamba12345 have you not seen the sales figures? they're flying off the shelves!
@@Blackmamba12345 And that's exactly what Tata have done for JLR. They haven't improved the practicality or utilitarian nature of their Land Rovers, they've just increased sales. I've no reason to trade my OG defender for this new one and when I want a bit more comfort I drive my ranger. Can't say this new defender excites me.
@@Blackmamba12345 Been following the Grenadier progress closely; certainly looks the part so far. We'll see what comes of it.
Most young parents with young kids don’t have £50k+to spend on an urban safari car !
He drives an X3 says it all! Well done Land Rover! Progress had to be made, love the look!
One of these days we are going to get you in a lifted American truck sam, that defender is small!! Love the video tho champ!
Powerwagon, his head would explode!
Hello! Thanks for the review. What breed of pup is your partner?
It’s interesting how different cultures see the same vehicle differently. In Australia, we consider the new Defender as a medium sized 4WD. But it looks like in the UK it’s considered as a very large one. Those who loved the old Defender will hate this new one. But those (like me) who are looking for a capable 4WD (to actually take offroad), will love it. As soon as they land down under, I’ll go and test drive one. Though I’m still concerned with LR’s inconsistent built quality and reliability. Finger’s crossed they have stopped the electronic gremlins that has plagued other LR products.
I’ve seen one in the flesh and it’s HUGE.
Would love to see what Urban Automotive could do with it...
I personally like it..
The old Defender went from Amazon discovery / farmers utility vehicle to fashion accessory Kings Road essential. As such the new Defender perfectly fits its market.
Great review Sam, thanks and I share a lot of your views. Just had a chance to test drive the new Defender today and despite great expectations I must say I was a bit underwhelmed. First impressions were that it's just like sitting in the seat of a Discovery or Rangy Sport (two of my previous Landys), unlike the old Defender this doesn't differentiate itself from the rest of the LR fleet. It may have all the capability but as you rightly say, at £50k for the base model very few people are going to risk this off road. Indeed, I have a hard working Defender and hardly ever have I seen a newish Discovery, Range Rover, or Sport in a true off road environment in the countryside and no doubt this new Defender will follow the same trend. You'll see more on the school run than down the muddy tracks. Also from past experience in damaging a suspension compressor off road, with a repair bill then of £500+, air suspension has its limitations when it comes to rough knocks. Another reason why all this expensive capability will mostly be left untested by many owners. I appreciate other people's views may of course differ so please, try for yourself and see what you think! Sam as you say, it's perhaps best to look at this as a model in its own right rather than through 'Defender optics'.
Land Rover Dominator might had been much more fitting name for it.
The 90 looks a bit more Defenderish but the thing it really reminds me of is the Freelander.
The old defender was also insanely expensive. Also wait till the new defender is about 6 years old, then you can happily drive it without giving a stuff about dings, mud and other crap. Just like the old old defender.
Saw one last week when leaving the golf course.... needless to say... I am in LOVE. I want one!!!
8:22 “yummy mummy”...
You don’t. You buy the old one 👍🏻
I have one. I agree with much of what you say.
Maybe they just used the wrong name - you can't compare it to the original Defender (which I also still have). Totally different car and concept.
Better to compare it to the Discovery (which I've just got rid of to buy the Defender). It's like a "Discovery Rugged". It's like a better version of the D4 (which I had), leaving the D5 (which I also had) to drift upmarket as a 'Swiss army family wagon'.
Target audience: It's definitely more rugged inside and outside than the Discovery and you can get it with decent (smaller) rims and off-road tyres.
Mine hauls my family in style; my trailers with ease; the dog with no pretence and kit inside and on top more capably than almost any other car on the market (save a VW Transporter). Mine also spends time off the tarmac and is currently covered in muck.
All vehicles are a compromise. I'd say this is an all-purpose vehicle with swagger. It takes punishment when needed, can cosset on long journeys with ease and stands out from the increasingly bland cookie-cutter competition. Most importantly, it makes you feel like you can conquer the world - even though you're just off to Tesco.
Crazy. I'm watching this video on in-flight wifi and flying over Moab the moment Sam mentioned it. Freaky. 5:39
This should have been the Discovery 5.
