    Hello from Australia. Thanks for the updates Charlie. Your videos are the most practical reviews I have found on the new defender. I have a MY20.5 D240 First Edition on order and should be delivered in early November. I am never one to by the first version of any new make or model, so hoping the MY20.5 has fixed the known items (like the A Pillar rattle). Thanks Trent

    Welcome back! I bet with this model you see the advantages of your options. Luckily it seems that the problems, though irritating, are relatively minor. I do hope LR get to the bottom of the issues, as I do believe this is one of their best products they have on the market.

    Interesting video. I’m pretty sure every Land Rover rattles. Great cars in so many ways, but rattles can be pretty annoying! I currently have a 2017 Range Rover Vogue. Rattles above front windscreen, B pillar & rear left boot. Been there from day 1. Dealer tried to fix and had to replace metal panels above front windscreen in order to fix. We’re going to replace B pillar completely, but was getting ridiculous so Ive had to learn to live with a geiger-meter in my right ear. I really struggle to understand how they get away with it. It will be exactly the same for top models like SVR Autobiography. Oh and before the 2017 RR Vogue I had a 2015 RR Vogue. Exactly the same!

    We have had the door rattle, car had been off the road for 4 weeks now awaiting a plastic clip for the door trim. They’ve changed something on the production line. No A pillar noise but do have seat fade (denied by LR) and radar picks up hedges on bends (Bosch award of this)

    The bit 22" wheels you have are part of the Urban Pack you have - HSE also normanlly has 20" wheels as standard. Personally I prefer smaller wheels and bigger sidewalls on the tyres (more comfortable and better off-road). A lot of the things you mentioned about the SE not having are actually options that you could have - the big thing the HSE has is the better headlights.

  • @msuomal
    @msuomal 3 года назад

    Do you know what the difference is between the seats in the SE and HSE trims? In the specs it says 12-way electric for SE and 14-way electric for HSE. Asked from a reseller but they don’t seem to know. There is a difference in the headrests but they are manually adjusted in both (2-way in SE vs 4-way in HSE, as far as I know).

    Yep love the update, still not sure what to go for, Defender or Discovery. But I’m surprised at the SE speck how low it is in comparison to the HSE in terms of trim and specifications etc. Not sure if I could put up with the noisy A pillar on the defender and doors, sounds like a lot of money to pay for something that’s noisy. I think I’m leaning towards Discovery. Good videos really enjoy them.

    Not a fan of the silver - usually I think it's quite flattering as it shows off the curves and lines of a vehicle, but on the new Defender it just makes it look a bit tubby. It seems a very colour-sensitive car - it looks great in grey or green, but the other colours (particularly black, as well as silver) don't look as good. The colour choices are fairly uninspired anyway (no red, orange, yellow, dark green, etc and the blue is a bit meh).
    SE would probably be the spec I'd go for, as I wouldn't want leather seats. I'm quite pleased with the specification changes, though the prices have gone up (of course!).

Ordered a First Edition which should come in October but just discovered that it seems to be obsolete as they are no longer putting a 4 cylinder engine in but will use a six cylinder mhev instead. I read the news about that: be careful the new engine will be less eco friendly:
      More CO2 and more fuel consumption, where I live that means: more tax to pay and more money to spend over the day use...
      My advise is to wait only if you will buy the PHEV one with petrol engine.

      Very annoyed about the new engines and ditching the 4 cylinder so soon. They knew this was coming when the vehicle was released so should have given the option for later delivery. My dealer implied the 6 was some way off. The 240 is no more than adequate.

  • @RichardCurtisImaging
    @RichardCurtisImaging 3 года назад

    Hey Charlie. Wanted to solicit your feedback on the changes to the Diesel engines. I have a 240 original on order, coming next week. What’s your view of the changes? Is it really worth trying to replace my 240 with a 250 and waiting again? My inclination is to not bother and just stay with the 240. But your a car guy so hence the question and respect your professional opinion?

    • @timoliver8940
      @timoliver8940 3 года назад +1

      I have a D240, it’s fine, it has sufficient power and torque and while you won’t gain much in power from the 6 cylinder you will get more torque but also I suspect worse fuel consumption and let’s face it the consumption of all the Ingenium engines is pretty dire. My 2015.5MY RRS with the SDv6 engine was considerably more economical and regularly returned 36-40mpg, often more on a long motorway haul at National speed limit.

    • @RichardCurtisImaging
      @RichardCurtisImaging 3 года назад

      Tim Oliver perfect, thanks. It’s a tricky balance, as a fully loaded P400 is over 90k, even the P400e will be upwards of 85, and I do resent paying that much for a car. Ultimately, I’ve have a v8 M car for 10 years and another of similar for 8 years before that, so I’m kind of bored with what they offer, so, just looking for something different to take down tracks, a bit of off road, cycling, camping and some longer road trips, but nothing crazy. So my conclusion and speaking with a mate who works for a super car company on PHEV’s, is wait for the challenges of batterIes and problems associated with electric cars (sustainability etc), is something I’m willing to do. Then in 3 to 4 years turn, flip the 240 into what ever is available in the defender or maybe something else in that time frame. I think and hope, there are more changes planned for the defender anyway, as I’m assuming there is at least a 5 to 10 year plan at JLR. So, it’s a stepping stone to the next thing..at the end of the day PCP is a way to do this with minimal risk, and a flexible plan for the future.

    • @timoliver8940
      @timoliver8940 3 года назад +1

      After almost 30 years of LR owning I called it a day in 2018 and bought a Mini Countryman PHEV. The day I took delivery of I put down a deposit on a Defender 90 PHEV. In 2 years owning the Mini it had a single visit to the dealership on a safety recall to put a sticky label on the granny charger, nothing else needed looking at. So far my New `defender 110 First Edition has had two unscheduled trips to the dealer for things that should not have got passed the QC team on the production line - it’s going in tomorrow again to try to trace where rain water is getting into the driver’s side rear passenger door, this is the third attempt to find the entry place, we know where it’s coming out as it leaves the door arm rest wet and drips onto the seat fabric............... I was disappointed that there was no PHEV at launch but now it’s on the way I’m so glad I didn’t wait because in today’s world there are SUV PHEVs out there with real world electric only motoring ranges in excess of 45 miles and JLR can only give us 26 miles WLTP which will be more real world 18-20 miles in summer and 12-14 miles in winter. As a private buyer getting no tax advantages from buying a PHEV it’s not worth my while even test driving one, I could have kept my Countryman and got better on less battery capacity! I love my 110 and accept that as a very early adopter there will be niggles and small faults but to need so many unsuccessful visits to the dealer to fix something that QC at the factory should have picked up is unforgivable.

    • @RichardCurtisImaging
      @RichardCurtisImaging 3 года назад

      Tim Oliver’s hope they get it resolved, I’m sure they will. Agree with the 27miles on PHEV. Even the sales person at the dealership, said it was a waste of time, and expected more. Maybe the 240 will be a wanted item in the future, maybe a cult classic as it’s only been running for a year..

      I also have a 1996 TDi 300 old 90 as my “toy” it’s brilliant off-road and crap on it, but great fun. My D240 is way way better as an all rounder- smooth ,quiet and very comfortable (everything the old one isn’t!) My 110 has been moderately offroaded and is fantastic at that too BUT there’s no way I would dare take it where I wouldn’t hesitate to go in my simple (no electronics at all, no ABS and no Traction Control just a centre diff and transfer case) old school Defender. The new one is brilliant on greenlanes but I’ll keep using the old one on the moors and hillsides because it’s 24 years old, it has plenty of battle scars and is easy to repair! Today it came back from a day out covered in residue of peat bog, I would not like to inflict that on my new one, I’ll spending most of tomorrow after leaving the new at the dealers with the pressure washer jetting off the muck that would be really hard to get out from underneath the new one had I used that

    The interior material on the base, S, and SE are quite peculiar. It's almost like dry-fast polyurethane antimicrobial marine foam. Something you would be comfortable spraying down with a hose. I could see the benefit of such an interior if the Defender actually gets used to its full capabilities off-road. I also agree the panoramic moonroof makes the vehicle much nicer in appearance; however, I would advise opting out if the buyer plans on purchasing the expedition roof rack, traveling frequently with a roof tent, or lives in a desert climate. Overall, I do much prefer the HSE, especially if off-roading is not in the picture for the purchased vehicle.

    Did they fix the issues for you? Thanks for your “idiot’s guide” which is getting me ready for my 110 HSE PHEV due March/April. There seem to be a lot of comments generally on reliability - a lot based on the problem TFL had with their first car (the second problem was a mechanic damaging the car not a car problem). Have you had any issues with PIVI PRO? That area seems to have been an issue with previous systems. But it’s brilliant that after 72 years Land Rover have now produced a Defender that is not only good off-road but also good on road - and comfortable and safe too.

    It is a bit disappointing but I still get the new defender and as u probably know new cars do have teething problems that Land Rover will fix as there’s a lot of attention on the new defender.
    I drive a Peugeot and they are terrible at recalls and known issues and I have had the same glitches since new that came back conviently after warranty expired
    8 years later and my car will set off an alarm that someone is not wearing a seatbelt in the back when it’s only me in the car. 😡
    Hopefully u get it all fixed C.
    On a sub note
    I worked in a plastic moulds company three years ago who supplied parts for JLR and I was at a meeting where we got told that A pillars we made for Land Rover were peeling off new Range Rovers in Dubai as a result of the adhesive we where told to use by Land Rover not liking the heat.
    We weren’t at fault as just made the pillar but used their glue but we got blamed anyway.
    FF and I’m still hearing it’s happening on all models and obviously defenders

My old Rover 800 Vitesse with 400k on the clock is a motoring dream compared to people with dodgy defenders waiting for that engine warning light to illuminate the dash on a dark night Some of the problems people have had with this contraption is mind boggling as my Vitesse eats up the miles , never depreciating , always supremely comfortable ,totally reliable analogue electrics , and user friendly under bonnet maintenance . You would think my Vitesse is the better car by far , or by a country mile as Land rover owners used to say before JLR took over

    Hey Charlie, ciao!
    Quick update on my new Defender, they build it in 4th September and they will delivery it more and less on the 21th (very slow logistics I think) but I got the chassis number plate and I was able to order the accessories.
    First surprise with that: the price was not the one published on LR site.
    The dealer has add some time costs for the labor due to assembly...
    I don’t think is a good way to do and it is not a transparent and correct thing to do especially for a brand that would like to be premium and that has to recover a lot in terms of trust towards the consumer.
    Also the fact that they didn’t fix your A pillar and they properly test the car it let me think how they still not take good care about us customers.
    JLR MUST start to take care about problems and customers satisfaction.

      The A pillar trim is a TSB recall on all early cars, replacement for free. My car is in the service bay tomorrow for replacements after an 8 week delay as they were on back order at the factory. The recall is VIN dependent though as later builds have the modified trims put on on the production line. My car’s build number is below 1100 and we are now seeing VINs higher than 15000.
