    It’s been years since Land Rover sold the Defender in the U.S. The all-new 110 was worth the wait. Built using aluminum monocoque body construction, Defender will go anywhere, and do it comfortably. Yup, it’s as refined on-road as it is tough on the trails. Tom Voelk checks out the four-door 110 SE with P400 inline-6 mild hybrid powertrain on the trails of DirtFish Rally School. And yes, 4-wheel drive is standard. Of course.

    "Mondrian looking element"? (13:24) Kudos, Tom. That art history in college wasn't such a waste of time, after all, eh? I've never owned a Land Rover but my friends who have describe their experience in terms of reliability and repair costs as nightmares. On the other hand, I don't think my friends are a representative sample of vehicle owners (or voters) so I wouldn't generalize their experiences to make a universal judgment. In any event the Defender is undeniably a beautiful example of an SUV that occupies a very narrow and distinctive niche. Here in the Puget Sound area I'd guess it's especially appealing to very well paid 30-something Microsoft-ies with thousand dollar mountain bikes. :)

    • @DrivenCarReviews

      Honestly, the fact that you're looking at more than one vehicle is a good starting point. If you're REALLY going to use the 3rd row often you won't like Defender. Have you looked at Aviator, GV80 or the top Telluride?

      @@DrivenCarReviews thanks for your reply Tom. I usually stick with European vehicles, only reason I was looking at GMC Yukon Denali is because of its rejuvenated masculine look and secondly I get an GM employee pricing. I have actually factory ordered one to my liking (94K CAD !! ). But after test driving a Defender I'm seriously having second thoughts. The Yukon is nice but might be an overkill even for my family with two kids. Technically I won't be using the third row except when our extended family/friends piggy back with us. Kids loved the rear entertainment system of the Yukon which is not available on the Defender. 90% of the time the vehicle will be driven to grocery stores/school. @@scandinavia6271 Reliability issues were when Ford owned LRJ, they (Ford) cut corners and used cheap parts to build LRJ vehicles. TATA motors bought them and moved their operations back to the UK, now they are back on track, Of course nothing is perfect. Quality has gone up dramatically IMHO.

    I don’t get it how rear door opens in the wrong direction in US. I mean just step out of the car (from either driver or passenger’s) and open the door in the direction it opens. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!! Or do you mean the rear door opens in the direction differently from other/most cars in US? The only thing that would have been wrong if Defender was Right Hand Drive in US given Land Rover is British company where Right Hand Drive is actually the right direction.

      Park at the curb in the US and the door opens toward the sidewalk, which is where one might be unloading stuff. It blocks your way.

    I could drop upwards of $90K on one, or I could wait five years and, if I can find one running that doesn't have $10K worth of needed repairs, snatch one up, unsullied, from a wealthy suburban housewife for $35K. I'm a patient man.

    the touchscreen is the Achilles heel? lol...not the 50yrs of completely unreliability...? LR makes great, niche vehicles that are wonderful when they work, and that breakdown and give you really expensive problems when they dont...sorry to say. i want to love this vehicle, but just like the previous one that i owned, and after knowing several other LR owners...if you can get it to 50k miles, then it means you are ready to start fixing things, or be prepared to be stranded somewhere.

    • @scandinavia6271
      @scandinavia6271 3 года назад

      Well, my LR has a 100 k. on it without “reliability issues” - do you think it will break down any day soon? Would you suggest me to sell it? And buy - ta da - maybe a Toyota? (they say it NEVER breaks down!)
