I wouldn't mind if someone gave me the Defender but given a choice at that price point I'd like to think a bit. Maybe I'll go with the Defender, maybe not. 70-30 chance.

Tom, I am glad to see the 2 door is on the way. With a 2 door Defender, Wrangler and Bronco we just need a Toyota for a game of short wheelbase, 2 door SUV bridge. The point you made about pampered luxury SUVs eventually coming onto the used market at affordable prices that benefit 'true believers' was.......... priceless.

Hi Tom. You're the first reviewer I've heard quoting Gerry McGovern saying 'Respectful of its past but not harnessed by it. A new defender for a new age.' Think that's a fair description. Definitely the most capable and best looking of the modern 4x4s. If they prove reliable, they're onto an icon. Thanks for the great review!
They are more fragile... slip into a tree at 5mph with the new defender it will be very damaged with the old defender the only damage will be done to the tree 👍👌

I like how the rear opens especially with the tire. Imagine you have a flat on the hwy and you had to open the towards traffic to get your tools and a truck takes your tire out
Owned a few Land Rovers and the reliability issue is due to the exclusive feel one gets when driving one and also the technology used ot give that elusive feeling not found in cars at this price point. If I wasn't high right now, I could probably frase that first sentence a wee bit better, but you know, right?
The elephant in the room is quality and reliability... Judging by other video reviews online there are issues purely related to manufacturing... land rover is infamous. Nice looking SUV though, Tom is 100% correct, buyers will ignore concerns and will be drawn to the branding.
The rear door is that way for the RHD models when you open the door you are on the Curb in the UK !!!! They should have made them both ways because of the volume sold in LHD countries...
Seems to me I saw someplace that it's only reinforced on one side to handle the weight of the tire and switching it up would be too much of a pain in the butt.
I really wish there was a 300 mile ev version of this under epa , 25mpg at best for such a slow 0-60 with the eu diesel , it’s a freelander with an extra row, not a defender

I've never owned a Land Rover but my friends who have describe their experience in terms of reliability and repair costs as nightmares. On the other hand, I don't think my friends are a representative sample of vehicle owners (or voters) so I wouldn't generalize their experiences to make a universal judgment. In any event the Defender is undeniably a beautiful example of an SUV that occupies a very narrow and distinctive niche. Here in the Puget Sound area I'd guess it's especially appealing to very well paid 30-something Microsoft-ies with thousand dollar mountain bikes. :)
Good ole' Dirtfish in Snoqualmie. I can't wait to go back, I had to cancel my return for obvious reasons. Hopefully it's an option at the end of this year.

Why do American card have those yellow lights on the side? I think most of the world only gets those lights on bigger vehicles (maybe 16 seater upwards and trucks 🚚)
So do you get the Diesel option in the US, I guess with fuel prices being reasonable and with Diesel Gate few people would be a Derv Burner. Think most people in the UK would buy the Diesel as it appears (apparently to be cheaper than the Petrol although I would have to rewatch another RUclips vid to clarify that.

@@scandinavia6271 Reliability issues were when Ford owned LRJ, they (Ford) cut corners and used cheap parts to build LRJ vehicles. TATA motors bought them and moved their operations back to the UK, now they are back on track, Of course nothing is perfect. Quality has gone up dramatically IMHO.
I remember coming across quite a few old beat-up Defenders on random desert trails in Morocco during my visit to that country - I doubt this will ever happen with the new model. It lost that charming ruggedness... but I'm sure the luxury clientele will like it.
This whole red, yellow and green light at the end does not work. Would be best to get rid of all of that. Also, the multiple ad interruptions is terrible too.
What I wanna know is, how the heck do you get in and out of that thing while along the muddy ruts at DirtFish? If the truck is 2 feet deep in the slosh, then you gotta be, too!
TFL's experience with the Defender as well as their nightmares trying to get a Tesla repaired after a minor fender bender are instructive. But anecdotal experience broadcast on the internet is no more a reliable basis for a universal judgment than the fact that your family and friends probably voted for the same presidential candidate you chose.
Great review bro subscribed. also watched your review on 2021 Yukon denali. Im actually in the market for a 7seat SUV and was loking st these two closely. Note that, the msrp are very same . I have test driven both. Both ride buttery smooth. Defender is definitely more refined and feels luxurious but comes with less options and third row space compared to the same priced Denali. Can’t decide!! What’s your take on these?
Honestly, the fact that you're looking at more than one vehicle is a good starting point. If you're REALLY going to use the 3rd row often you won't like Defender. Have you looked at Aviator, GV80 or the top Telluride?

I usually stick with European vehicles, only reason I was looking at GMC Yukon Denali is because of its rejuvenated masculine look and secondly I get an GM employee pricing. I have actually factory ordered one to my liking (94K CAD !! ). But after test driving a Defender I'm seriously having second thoughts. The Yukon is nice but might be an overkill even for my family with two kids. Technically I won't be using the third row except when our extended family/friends piggy back with us. Kids loved the rear entertainment system of the Yukon which is not available on the Defender. 90% of the time the vehicle will be driven to grocery stores/school. Worth mentioning that either of them would be leased for 24 months only :)

It's a Nike wallet. I like it because the outside black makes it look like a grown up wallet but the Volt Green inside makes it pop so I can find the damn thing.
the touchscreen is the Achilles heel? lol...not the 50yrs of completely unreliability...? LR makes great, niche vehicles that are wonderful when they work, and that breakdown and give you really expensive problems when they dont...sorry to say. i want to love this vehicle, but just like the previous one that i owned, and after knowing several other LR owners...if you can get it to 50k miles, then it means you are ready to start fixing things, or be prepared to be stranded somewhere.
Well, my LR has a 100 k. on it without “reliability issues” - do you think it will break down any day soon? Would you suggest me to sell it? And buy - ta da - maybe a Toyota? (they say it NEVER breaks down!)
I don’t get it how rear door opens in the wrong direction in US. I mean just step out of the car (from either driver or passenger’s) and open the door in the direction it opens. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!! Or do you mean the rear door opens in the direction differently from other/most cars in US? The only thing that would have been wrong if Defender was Right Hand Drive in US given Land Rover is British company where Right Hand Drive is actually the right direction.

Ooo. Why ya like it better? My defender SE gets in in May. Chose the se over the x dynamic cuz I liked the bright pack for the bumper.

There's a 50/50 chance the flat is on the driver's side though. No control over that!

Don’t even think to consider the 4 cylinder engine, only go for inline 6 cylinder.

The only thing that would have been wrong if Defender was Right Hand Drive in US given Land Rover is British company where Right Hand Drive is actually the right direction.
Park at the curb in the US and the door opens toward the sidewalk, which is where one might be unloading stuff. It blocks your way.

Definitely prefer a Land Cruiser / LX 570. Reliability is job 1 for an off roader. Land Rover is not fooling me with this pretty toy.

@@DrivenCarReviews Yeah sure, but have you done the STI course. Will change your life my good man. I own an STI, I had no idea what's it's true limits actually were until Dirtfish. I have to think they'd let you take the big course for free if you made a video on it for your channel. (It would garner you tons of hits as well...)
