This is ringing a few bells. We came to NZ in 2003, had to come back to the UK in 2011 for a variety of family reasons. We are now planning to return to retire, our children are just finishing up at Uni and they are on board. We are so looking forward to our return, selling all the STUFF that you have and coming with an empty bucket. Planning to arrive, buy a truck and caravan, and as the kids say, the olds are going on tour. Cant wait!

I really enjoyed Allison’s experiences. My Canadian daughter left Canada to finish her education in Wellington and stayed for 14 years. She absolutely loved it and commented many times to my wife and I how similar NZ was to Canada and that she felt instantly at home. My wife and I visited in January 2013, hired a car and we drove from top to bottom, east and west coasts. I said many times that I could easily live there. My daughter moved back to Nova Scotia in 2023 with her Kiwi partner to be closer to her “aging parents”. Since then my wife passed away and there is talk of a return to live in NZ and I have been asked if I would like to move with them. Of course, if I am able, and immigration laws permitting, I will without hesitation. So to hear Allison’s story starts me thinking about what it would really be like. Granted, I am retired and won’t have to worry about working nor will I need to think about lodgings as I will be fortunately included in their plans.

What a fabulous message, Brian, thank you so much. It sounds as though you have some adventures ahead of you! Allison is also hoping to have her parents live here (they will come on the parents visa) fingers crossed so you will be on similar paths. How wonderful that you have your daughter and her family to be all together with. I can't think of anything lovelier for you. I wish you all the best and hope to hear that you are settled and happy here in NZ soon ❤️!

Yes! I AM SO OVER IT TOO! Where I live, I am never treated nicely because I don't care about money and the big show people think I should put on! Bravo for New Zealand! I realize that in order to be treated as someone who has human value, I really need to move.

Awesome listen. Really thankful I came across this. I'm Canadian as well and did a WHV in NZ 9 years ago. I returned to Canada to finish school and here we are all this time later and I still think about NZ almost daily.. I'm destined to return to say the least.
If I won the lottery I'd honestly return in a heartbeat. Everyone's situations different but particularly for me at this stage of my life (early 30's) it just doesn't make sense financially.
I know it was mentioned in this video that part of the love for NZ came from the lack of consumerism and competition between peers which is something I admire as well but I still need to be able to pay my bills and put a roof over my head and eventually retire.
In my particular profession to switch over to NZ I'd be earning about 50% of my annual take home. My mortgage would cost double. I'm past the point In my life of wanting roommates so I'd definitely want to own upon my return.
Can currency is also is also worth quite a bit more so the more I can prepare myself now the better! I'll definitely return when the time is right.

You are so lucky your realtor friend gave that advice I asked the same question of my realtor friend at about the same time he advised a repaint and other work which delayed everything by 8 months I believe that cost us half a million dollars.
When I was a kid it was a thing my parents friends would arrive here from the UK be gone after a year then back again for life quite soon after. That was in the 70's nothing changes.

Good for you, Allison. You guys made a great decision to finally😜 move to New Zealand. Wishing you all the best.💕
We would move to New Zealand if we could - age is the problem. New Zealand is my "soul place." I guess we have to bribe 😜our son to move there so we can follow.🤔
I completely agree with your guest that you need time to feel at home in a new country. What worked for us, 36 years ago, was making friends with the people around us. Also, we went back to university, which immediately made us part of a new culture. We didn't surround ourselves only with people from our own culture but embraced everyone. This helped a lot.
Glad to see your happy face, Liz. Your interviews are so informative, well done - always. Lots of love.💖

We fought hard to provide midwife care in New Zealand. Before 1990s you had to be under a GP who had to be present at the birth. Not now. If it's a normal pregnancy with no complications midwife care is free. You do not need an Obstetrician.
