No offense, but you don't have to constantly try to find all the *symbolisms* in a movie on your first watch. It's perfectly fine to just watch the movie and figure the stuff out along the way/later. That's just my opinion.

My final takeaway was that even when it’s happening we would choose escapism over trying to recognise and deal with the flaws in societal behaviour that are happening. Rather watch friends than take the numerous messages being sent even as they’re escalating

@@ileanahernandez1709 Yeah, considering how the movie left everyone else - they all knew to go to that house to the bunker as it is (well except Julia Roberts and the other girl? who I can't remember her name, sorry) so I feel even if everything was going downhill for whatever the reason is they'd all wind up in the bunker together.
Ending without knowing exactly what happens to everyone makes us feel just like the young girl felt the whole movie. It also represents how we will never know the ending to everything. Deep

Literally anything? The story was completely unfonished, which is unfortunate as the whole plot was very interesting up untiö the credits started to roll suddenly. The movie was literally cut from half. Lmao wHaT dId YoU eXpEcT

Obama in an interview said that what happened in the film isn't far from what will happen in real life. That to me is freaky how an ex-president was quoted saying this and even freaked out the director of the film!! :)

The deer is symbolism for wisdom. The daughter keep saying that the deer is trying show her something, which lead her to the bunker. 1:12:01
I got it more as the deer are a warning that something is wrong or something wrong is coming. Deer are peaceful creatures after all and they keep showing the deer (and some other animals) symbolizing something is wrong in nature (for us it's everything else going on).

I honestly love this movie and the b plot story of basically “physical media is better” because I think it’s the one thing a lot of doomsday preppers don’t think about. Like yeah you have enough food to last for 30 years but you’d go insane by then from boredom. Also the fact that a message of the movie is pro physical media and then selling that movie to Netflix is hilarious
Well, Netflix did start out by selling rentals of physical media (DVDs).
It's filled with meta jokes like that. Like how watching Friends while "the world is ending" when we're now watching this movie when the world's biggest powers are destroying the planet and wars of all kinds are happening.
Personally I like these types of endings because they give an open ended discussion like I had with my family. Plus it’s a testament to the confidence the writers/director had in that they could do what they wanted.

There's also the symbolism of the white lion, and the white lion in ancient Zulu mythology. and it was a band's name, their album being "Fight To Survive."
This movie was something unusual and so good, forced me to think more about the world after watching this movie.

I didn't think the movie was so good. Read the book which is way milder. Netflix just created eye candy to catch watchers. Definitely you should always have preps at home and car...all the time

@@lisalee2885 Definitely aware of Rodman Serling. I agree, the man’s a genius. With that being said, in my opinion, would have LOVED to see a more traditional ending to this movie, or a cliffhanger leading to a sequel (due to how much I was invested in this interesting world war 3 origin story). But I do love my psychological thrillers, and that kind of genre deserves a little bit more heedfulness and an open mind. Now.. with THAT being said:
I feel like the pacing, and the ending to this movie, were completely necessary. The length of the movie is understandably subjective, but overall, the movie was a satisfying experience. 😌

I love what John said about Ethan Hawke's character and his dilemma with the Spanish-speaking woman on the road. I was thinking the same thing while watching that scene: we would all love to think that we would have done the "right thing" in that situation and brought her along, however, we will never know what we'd do until we're in that situation. that was one of the scariest things to me because it hints at the loss of our humanity being one of the first things we stand to lose when chaos reigns. thanks for the reaction guys! 😃❤
Yes I really sympathized with his character!!! It’s a tough situation. Like I know for a fact I would be bawling my eyes out because given the situation I also wouldn’t let the lady in even though i want to. Now n days we hear human trafficking happening because people pretend to be stranded. I was told to never stop for anyone. Simply call the police if they need help
Exactly the kind of movie I'd expect from the guy who made Mr Robot.
I think it ends the way it does cuz Rose says something along the lines of “I’ll see the end of Friends if there’s any hope in this fucked up world”
I think the ending was crazy cool. The whole time the daughter is expressing how she feels and no listens at all or unless it's damn near too late. The deer were trying to lead them to the bunker. The bonus is that she was able to be somewhat rewarded for it by seeing friends. All the other stuff going on around them seemed like a darn distraction. Like what the dad/house owner said in the car at the end. Instead of focusing on getting to safety, everyone is trying to figure out what happened or what's happening. Also, the daughter talking about the guy who was waiting for God to save him was a great way of her foreshadowing what she was going to do. It was also the first time in the movie she wasn't direct about what she was feeling. Probably because she was done being ignored and misunderstood. She was ready to take action. The ending was hilariously delicious, and I just assume that the rest of the family got to the bunker too, but it was delayed because they were focused on the "wrong" thing.
There's an old Twilight Zone episode almost like this called `The Monsters are Due on Maple Street ` . Except it's aliens creating the chaos not a foreign entity. I didn't mind the ending especially if you listen to the little girl's story from The West Wing.
I love how Kevin Bacon’s character looks absolutely racist but he’s like oddly the most accepting. Like he says “all we can do now is pray, or whatever you believe in” and then says the “it’s the Koreans, or chinese…one of ‘em” only to then follow it up by a legitimate reason as to why he claimed it was Korea or China, and that the confusion was on his friend’s lack of knowledge, not his own
They made it seem like he was going some crazy bunker guy. Turned out he was the most rational person.
In the book Kevin bacon role was much more mellow. They just amped the movie up for thrills

Like the family and GH they butt heads ofc but Kevin Bacons character and GH were friends and now they’re fighting, I feel like that portrays the “oh my god we’re gonna be killing eachother” better

I liked the ending. Leaves you with questions which is exactly what the main characters are left with as well.
I fell like you could guess what happened at the mid way point. Only useful info was Kevin bacon saying other people saw drones dropping different flyers. Didn’t have too many questions other than what would they do about it.

Noticed how the mom is always trying to hide what’s going on from her kids, but when George try’s to hide and comfort his daughter the mom doesn’t really care.

(the older daughters tattoo 96) the meaning of the number is a sign from the universe to let go of material attachments and prepare for a new beginning and to follow your gut feeling and it will lead you to the right path. I find that very on point with the themes in the movie like the whole time the older daughter knew something was wrong and the younger daughter was the only one following her gut and it lead her to the bunker.
Well to be fair, if the movie continued somewhat longer, I feel like all the rest of the cast would have made it to the bunker as well. Since they were all aware of it and where to go (mostly).

Your average cotton shirt or blouse or dress and pants are not designed to hold up to wind blasts at velocities of 400 or 500mph. When passengers are found unclothed it always indicates that the passenger cabin broke apart in a mid-air break-up. Clothes in these circumstances are shredded away by the slipstream. It could also be due to fire or the clothing simply catching on debris during impact and being ripped away as the body is thrown.
"Glass means nothing to this camera." 😂 The camera movement, at times, reminds me of a scene from "Bad Boys 2" where the camera went places it seemingly couldn't.
I actaully liked the ending. I really hate happy endings that just feel like fan service, it's boring.
During the whole film I was fascinated by Ethan Hawke's eyes.

I feel like more people need to take this more seriously. It is honestly one of the scariest movies I've seen in a while. Other than the race baiting ,anti white sentiment in the background of pretty much the whole movie I feel it speaks a lot of truth on how the modern world is falling into chaos.

Everyone is weird about her being judgemental when they show up at the house at first but I mean if you rent a place and the owner just shows up and says he’s going to stay the night with you that would be really freaking weird and she never met them….
I think it was more so the way she went about it. Both sides had reasons to be distrustful but Amanda admitted that she straight up hates people and you can very clearly see that.
Also her saying that he could be the handyman and the daughter the maid is p odd. The implication is that someone like them would be unable to own a house like that.

I think it's definitely an implication that they're going to live in the bunker and have friends style antics while surviving for years off the supplies stashes inside.
I really loved this movie! Gave me an eerie feeling the whole time, but it kept my interest the whole time.

The mom and the daughter are headed to the house already in search of Rose, and we know they’re near because we can hear them calling her name from outside. The man, father, and boy are all headed to the house too because of what the contractor told them. Rose left the bike outside and they all know it’s her bike and they most likely will hear the friends playing

I hated the ending. But unlike most, i hate it because of how Good it was. I hated feeling like the story was unfinished because it made me feel all the more involved in the actual story. I've never heard of this director before but if this is his breakout film, he will definitely make it far.

This was supposed to be a modern realistic depiction of what could happen and what it would be like. I think people are upset their isnt more action and aliens or something supernatural going on. The girl took the sign from god and found them a bunker and she got to see the last episode of friends. Ended perfect tbh. They found a bunker and the families realized they are in it together.
Read the book 👍👍 They amped this up for thrills

Yea it was OK movie...typical of these kinds but missing an ending. Sure they are going to ram sequels out
its a solar flare and the son has radiation poisoning, all the navigation systems got fried, all the southern states were attacked were the states in the desert where our ozone layer is thinner(nevada new mexico arizona). i like the paranoia throughout the movie that ppl have of other ppl, escalating towards koreans chinese and iranians at the end. nope in the end it was not the person beside you that ended the world it was you not paying attention to nature(thats the deer scene).
blue eye samurai is also on Netflix and its amazing!

@@Jack-om1qw I think that's supposed to be some random group in the United States. Paranoia racism and prejudice towards other ppl is a theme that is in the opening monolog where Julia Robert's says she hates ppl.
@@doctor_del I'm not saying you're wrong in fact I think you're correct but if a solar flare was wiping out electronics how do drones fly around while planes are nosediving? Planes can be piloted manually so even if a solar flare took out instruments the pilot wouldn't just barrel roll into the ocean also why does the son get sick from radiation a million times faster than any other character?
I think the point is that it's unknown but a solar flare doesn't explain everything (especially the powerful client selling his assets unless they knew a solar flare was already inbound)

1619? Have you read the piece by Hannnah Nikole-Jones on the 1619 Project? The White Lion has a history in North America. The San Juan Bautista, the White Lion and Treasurer were in the busines of transporting human cargo from the African continent or hijacking ships that did. The San Juan Bautista was close to Mexico when the Treasurer and White Lion hijacked it and stole the "cargo." Some of that "cargo" ended up at Jamestown in 1619 on the White Lion. So I am wondering how the White Lion and 1619 on the radio dial are connected?
69 and 96 are usually talking about perspective, they look the same depending on which way you're looking at them
It’s increasingly difficult to distinguish if you’re genuinely reacting or just vomiting mini-monologues to fill time.
I think that's what all movie reactors do. If I'm watching a movie I'm not talking throughout the whole film.
I subscribed to you guys about 10 minutes into this video 😂😂. Great reaction and breakdown!
The pros
• the camera work and interesting shots all throughout the movie
• the cgi was great. The cars, the planes & the boats crashing, the animals, the shots all looked amazing
• every performance was great, which wasnt saying much considering almost every character was a major actor, but even the supporting cast did amazing. That hispanic woman deserves an award imo.
• They build up suspense tremendously well.
The cons
• The dialogue often times lacks cohesion. I found a lot of the interactions were either awkward or had a weird flow.
• Sometimes pacing issues. There were periods of time where it seemed like things are taking too long. Also, when the sons teeth are falling out and they rush out the house and cut to the women in the shed having a conversation, i was annoyed.
• Characters sometimes make weird decisions that frustrate me, and arent responsive enough or freaking out enough for what they just witnessed. The girl didnt freak out over the deer, the wife and Mahershala Ali going to drink and dance after what they experienced.
Overall it was a cool movie and im glad i watched it though.

Best movie of 2023, in multiple categories, actors and actresses need some awards.. directing, camera, freaking sound, editing, everyone else who worked on it, great job!
I believe the two planes crashing into the exact same location are a reflection of the 9/11 attacks in which planes were also diverted off course by forces the pilots could not control.
It is notable all planes involved in the 9/11 attacks were jets made by Boeing, a US defense contractor. The planes which crashed into the beach in the movie also appear to be Boeings.

I'm just a big fan of this kind of film. I actually thought it was going to be another zombie apocalypse movie. I'm just glad it wasn't. That's why I'm also excited to see Civil War (A24 film).
I 100% understand the ending because I’ve done my homework! You guys left out the most important part of the movie in the beginning when they give the hint as to when this stuff is really going down!

this film is in the same world as Mr Robot so some references like the power plant melt down in NJ is something that happened in the show
The young girl reminded me soooo much of my 11 year old daughter, her character is definitely believable.
The ending was a warning. Even as the world falls apart around us we choose to stick our head in the sand and pretend like its not happening.

@joddo1991 from what Ive heard the ending is different in the book, the ending here clearly shows one of the main characters indulding in escapism as everything is in chaos and a nearby city is being bombed. Idk about the book but the movie is obviously a commentary on society at large.

I LOVED this movie. I remember seeing the Trailer and purposefully avoided any spoilers. It was so good and and I love end of world stuff. Great casting.

Jullia Roberts character is so well written and performed. She comes across as racist but if you go back and take race out of it she's just a scared (the oil tanker), paranoid mother who is incredibly pessimistic about people and protective of her children. She's the more responsible and protective parent while Ethan Hawke's character is pretty useless to his family in a situation such as this. This movie can reveal some people's racial biases but not in the way you may think.
Eh, she's still racist until she's in a situation where her bias is questioned. Kind of like the whole her having to apologize for her behavior...she acknowledges her...RACISM. This is driven home by Ali's comment about learning from your mistakes...

I wanted to know what was up with the deers. The leader looked like he was gonna try to do something but Julia interrupted. Or was the buck gonna show some positivity and Julia still interrupted?
I was so confused with what was going on that everytime the deer stared at someone I expected them to talk. I legitimately said out loud "Hello human, do you have any berries?" in Optimus Prime's voice.

In real life things don’t get tied in a happy bow and I guess the movie wanted us to realize that but I absolutely hated that child and I was like WHY when I saw credits 😂

Did anyone think the signs in this movie are subliminal or hidden? I think the whole message is quite obvious and pretty straightforward. A satirical view of American society (which isn't any different from most societies), the way people react in fear; how we act surprised as we haven't ever in our life seen something like this coming; how we want to distract from reality to fix ourselves somehow; how easy it is to create chaos and how willing we are to give out all control to technology so we don't have to do anything ourselves.
I don't think there was any hidden message at all. The director created confusion so people would come up with their own conspiracy theories to mirror the audience and show us we're no different from these characters.
some of the camera sequences are INSANE in this, especially the one where the wife explores the upstairs for the first time and the camera goes from inside to outside as it continues following her
I thought this was great! Big fan of Sam Esmail, though Rod Serling got the same results in 30 minutes with episode 22 of The Twilight Zone, “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.”
