This movie is actually pretty deep and FULL of meaning. I did a whole 50min video on all of the things I got. Unfortunately it's in brazilian portuguese so I don't think will help you guys at all. BUT I can give some drops of info here:
    - I think the main point of the movie is to show how disfunctional the United States are as a nation, an it's very clever to show it in a personal and intimate look in the dynamics of two families. And it's more effective. They left the racial themes, for example, all on hints and subtle dialogue. There are a lot of easter eggs also to show this. Here's one: the name of the grocery store and the signs pointing to the beach where the family goes, are both named Point Comfort, which is the former name of the port where the first known slave ship to arrive on US territory. The name of the ship? White Lion. The same name on the oil tanker.
    - About the deer (an the flamingos): there's a snippet of radio news on the drone scene, where Ethan Hawke's character is outside trying to get signal, and the radio news say that there has been a disaster affecting the animals migration patterns. And I feel that the significance is multilayered also. Nature is very important in this film. It's like Rosie says: deer seem to know something we don't.
At several moments in the film, from the beginning, especially when it goes from one day to the next, we look at the planet from the silence of space. In one of these moments, the camera moves away from the earth and exposes the United States flag, aged and discolored in the territory of the moon. It's almost an explanation, or a foreshadowing of what's happening on the blue planet. And perhaps it is even a mockery of the notion that we have of what progress and civilization actually are. In the American territory everything is crazy, there is a shouting match, everything is falling apart, but the watery rock that is planet Earth remains serene in space, if seen from the outside. The world of those people is ending, but the world in fact remains firm, supported by gravity. In the last of these views of the earth, we see an eclipse from the moon's point of view. The land remains there, but at that moment, the American nation, what they call civilization, is about to collapse.
And it's ironic that nature is what protects the film's protagonists from suffering from the apparently more serious consequences of what is happening in the cities. The forest, the green is what separates them from the greater disaster.
And then the animals come in.
As I said before, there is this radio news that explains an environmental disaster that affects animal migration. This explains the logic behind the strange behavior of birds, flamingos and deer. At first they are used in the film as a way to show that something is very wrong, but then things change.
Their second function is to serve as contrast and opposition. First, they are a reminder that much of our “civilization” has invaded a space that was originally theirs, and second, that this cyber apocalypse, after all, even if it affects their migration patterns, doesn’t actually scare them. They walk calmly among humans as if nothing were happening, because for them, the end of communication as we know it means nothing. The internet, satellites, cars, all of this stopping working, will not destabilize their world as it destabilizes ours. Maybe it's even better for them if human “civilization” goes down the drain.

It's very clear what the ending sets up, and the theme of Friends is more important than it seems. Amanda and Ruth will continue straight to the bunker house, find the bike and snacks and follow the sound of Friends to Rose. G.H. and Clay are headed back and Danny just gave them a hint about the bunker as well. G.H. asks Danny if they're still 'friends', and in the car asks Clay to be his 'friend'. Oh also there are 6 people in the group 3 male 3 female, just like friends, and 6 chairs by the swimming pool. Practically sets up a spin off of Friends over the years they'll be living in that unrealistically nice bunker.

What this *book* accomplished is to allow the audience to experience a realistic scenario of world catastrophe. I don't get people that wanted it to be super natural, or AI, or aliens. We have enough movies like that. This is refreshing and for many people a lot scarier because events like these are not only perfectly plausible but also right around the corner. Also the ending was perfectly appropriate in my opinion. We already know what's going to happen, since the circumstances are grounded on historical realities.

It’s weird people seem to side against Julia Robert’s. I want you to actually imagine you paid a lot of money for a vacation for your family. And in the middle of the night strangers show up and want to come inside and stay with you without having any way of proving who they are. Why would you be down for that?

Julia Roberts is pretentious and a complete idiot (in this movie and in real life). Take your kids and piss off. If and when everything works out then take the issue to court. They proved who they were by having the keys to the weapon, cash and liquor cabinet. Want more proof? Then ask the neighbors. Julia's character rushed to take a vacation without telling anybody and before doing due diligence on the location and the owner. This enter scenario being faced by her family is her fault.

So I could laugh about the ending with the “Friends Theme”. After the whole movie built up so much tension, it was a nice release. And about the thing with the shots at each other. That's not a normal blackout. I'm sure that sound freaks some people out plus there were probably forces there just waiting for it. They accelerated the whole thing.

Including you originally thinking it was aliens and even bringing up the super natural even though this is obviously supposed to be a very reality grounded film following the isolation and uncertainty that would come from an event like this. I think you guys would have a lot more fun just watching films like World War Z and Independence Day because it seems like slow burn movies arent your thing.
