A few easter eggs from the film.
    1. White Lion is the name of the ship that brought the first slaves to America.
    2. The radio transmission that Clay missed was tuned to 1619 -- the year the first slaves arrived in America.
    3. As they were driving, the family sees a sign for a town with "port" in the name. That was the point of disembarkation for the first slaves.
There are also several Mr. Robot references, but I never saw the series.
BTW, I thought Mahershala gave a masterful performance. The Mexican woman was asking for help. She wanted to get back to her home and family. She thought the flyers were some kind of chemical attack. Finally, Julia Roberts' character stated that Rose was acting young for her age. I think that was an oblique reference to the fact that isolation during Covid-19 adversely impacted children at a critical stage of their development.

Ok, now apply that to the context of the film. And lay it out for me.

    • @kalixw.1853
      @kalixw.1853 Месяц назад

@@rickyism1576 Actually, it's fairly simple. The film is making the point that it is easy to get Americans to turn on each other. This is in no small part due to one of the original sins that occurred upon our nation's founding.-- one was slavery, the other, first nation genocide.
The cognitive dissonance that was employed to justify slavery in a nation whose narrative of freedom was enshrined in the Constitution cannot be minimized. The same form of cultural schizophrenia was exemplified In Jim Crow, the Civil rights Era, the Southern Strategy, White flight and modern day voter suppression.
It was easy for Russia to use propaganda to exploit cracks in our society because the cracks had been there from our country''s inception. It's no mistake that one family was White while the other was Black. Until we come to terms in an honest way with our foundational issues, we will remain vulnerable to enemies both without and within.

I feel like M.Ali’s role was very purposeful. Knowing so much and being able to do nothing. It’s like when people say being woke isn’t fun. His character wasn’t as layered in drama as the others because he knows too much. He’s the least distracted. All he cares about is humanity, that’s he’s so accommodating and helpful.

I feel the gh character was pulling back because he was also trying to make sense of it all and also protecting his daughter. Ultimately I believe the underlying message of the movie is that we need to be there for each other during an event like that #Friends

  • @LAMusing
    @LAMusing 11 месяцев назад +10

G is the only one that thinks helping each other is the right thing to do - stepping past our fears. And even he withholds information that could help. Which is a theme here - people distrust each other, and that distrust, cynicism and unwillingness to help each other can mean we are the authors of our own destruction.
Amanda says in the very beginning, when she is telling hubby she booked this vacay, that she really doesn't like people. She can't wait to get away from them. She doesn't trust or like ANY people- so yeah, she's often right in her questions but is deeply unlikeable in HOW she talks to people. She's an extreme in how many people behave to each other with distrust. Ruth is the same in her own way - she had an unfriendly attitude when they showed up at the door in the middle of the night. They rented to these people and are showing up with no ID saying it's their house and they want to stay there- anyone would expect (like George does) that this is weird and could alarm the people in the house. He tries to navigate it, but his daughter is arms crossed and slinging insults. Not much different than Amanda- both are deeply cynical. So is the brother. So is Danny.
And then the unwillingness by almost every character to help each other - Amanda didn't want to help when they showed up late at night, Kevin was afraid to help the woman speaking Spanish (and was ashamed of that which is why he told the others he didn't see anyone), Danny doesn't want to help his old friend, Ruth doesn't want to help Amanda's family, even the brother doesn't help his little sister. But there are tiny shifts - Amanda and Ruth at the cabin stand together against the deer and reach out to each other watching the bombs. And we end with the youngest one who had a grain of hope that it can be different from the very beginning - exemplified in her obsession with her "friends" who promise that when life gets tough "I'll be there for you" every week in their theme song.

Loads of symbolism in this movie. Look at the messages on the kids tee shirts. The name on the oil tanker "white lion" supposedly the name of the first slave ship to arrive in America. 1619 on the radio. Thats supposedly when the slaves arrived. The wife was in Morocco. The first nation America had a treaty with i believe. The obama's flew a Morocco flag outside the white house mext to the American flag the last year of his presidency. So many more connections and esoteric symbols. Ive watched a couple breakdowns.

I think this movie was brilliant as each character represented a particular "segment" of folks in our society. Those who fell into one of those segments are shown to themselves (like looking in a mirror) and forced to see just how "tuned out" to reality they really are. All it took was the removal of those "conveniences" and most of those characters were rendered useless and unable to help themselves. The most profound was the father figures who are supposed to be the foundation and strength of the family unit but clearly was not. The wife (like her or not) had more fight in her. Even the daughter had more fight in her than her father.

People found a lot of nuggets, but are not aware of the biblical implications. Even the title; "Leave the world Behind." This movie takes you down a rabbit hole.
Imbeded right throughout was the history of how the "New World" began and the Wests colonial past. Check the map on the wall in the basement, and the references to the slave ship, including the location of where the owners slept.
The chapers were significant. Apart from the obvious, this may be a factor.
    Chapters
    1. The House - The home they stayed in was taken over by the visitors with a sense of entitlement. Is this a metaphor for the land and how Europeans stole the land from the native indigenous people? (The QR code is said to show this)
The father spoke of needing lots of oil in the event of an invasion or occupation, forgetting how the Americas is stolen land that exists by taking its resources from other black and brown countries.
The Teslas, were they a reminder of the green / tech revolution, carbon emisions and the human impact on the planet including, the current mining situation in Congo?
    2. The Noise - The chatter, the speculation of the unknown, thoughts, opinions perceptions beliefs, seen through the different actions and behaviours of the charecters. (Just like people are speculaing on the movie) (is this a social experiment? to see how people react, agree and disagree, including the rections of thr race relations, proving the point of delusion)
    3. The Curve - The markets (follow the money)
    4. The Floods - The migrating birds represent rising sea levels, tbe plane crash scene, the bed room tide picture, and the daughters story of the religious man provide with the information, yet choosing not to listen.
Ali also refered to this when he spoke abouthim feeling for the people who refuse to listen, even at their own loss, including his friend suggesting no one having contriol and the best people could hope for is a "heads up" (is this the heads up that people need to change)
    5. The last Ones - As the charecters reference at the end, the speculation of who or what, lots of people had a motive considering Americas history, with the immediate assumption of the threat being an identity different to self, others countries where seen as the attackers in th drop of a hat.
Or is the real enemy within? The cognitive dissonance, the self preservation, the paranoia, the psychosis, the mistrust.
The supposed threat was a civil war, does that sybolise the human actions, thoughts and behaviiurs is leading the world to self distuction?
The take home question is, If this was a real life event who would work together and unifyi and who would selfishly display the actions of the all American poster boy, turn on their neighbours and continue to distroy everything in their path..
Was it that the actual threat is climate change and all the distruction of human activity (the poster of the eyes on the wall at the beggining is from an artist who work refers to about viruses)
Is this suggesting human behaviour is the virus and tne flood will be the threat. The Obamas production company is called Higher Ground is this a coincidence?
The childrens Tshirts said OBEY and Nasa, is that linked to the 1988 movie "they live: refering to social climbing, percieved elite and consumerism?
The ending is genious.. We see the boy being given the "blue pill" as tne movie ends.
"You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes."

I agree that Obama producing it is unsettling. I'd like to think his point is that this is already happening. Russia interfered in elections, is heavily involved in misinformation campaigns, installed Trump, a soft coup was attempted on Jan6, and the country is so divided that it's practically a cold civil war. There was a strong theme around friendship and sticking together. Friends the show, Mahershala telling Kevin ''I thought we were friends'' and then asking Ethan if they were going to stick together, Julia telling Mahershala she was beginning to like him essentially becoming friends, ''America made a lot of enemies'' which is the opposite of friends.

the main message of the movie is that even in chaotic times like this, humans should stick together.
the deer scene where the lady and girl yelled at them and the scene where the fathers confronted the trump voter happened parallelly because they were both about doing the right thing and standing up for others, even if they're strangers and it seems "stupid" to do so.
and it was a net positive that they did: mahershala ali's character saved the teenage boy's life and julia roberts' character saved mahershala ali's daughters' life. if they hadnt done what they did (be selfless and help a stranger), those two kids would probably be dead.
the "stranger danger" mindset that that trump voter guy has is what would destroy humanity - as is revealed by marshala ali's character in the car.
one thing i noticed and wanna theorize about though is the cabin in the woods. it does not tie back to anything and is left unexplained. could it be a reference to ted k? and could the coup's political motivation somehow have to do with that? seeing the themes of environmentalism and technology putting humans in danger, that does very much remind me of ted k and anarcho-primitivism.

The deer are multi symbolic. Ambiguity of theirs movie leave the viewer to experience the movie & if they’d survive that situation themselves based on their biases. Everything is suggestion but isn’t actually as negative as they seem. Even the individual explaination of what they left to vacation & the mistrust of the homeowner were all valid reasons she gave & of course as someone of the white experience, what I was looking for was how she spoke to her husband about them. If it was logical or if she was racist. Racists def have no problem saying things in private. If she had those kind of views she would have said THAT instead of the logical mistrust based on strangers appearing at night, no ID, no way to verify his story & having faith to believe anyone in that situation. Anyone would rationally be skeptical in that situation but bc she’s white & bc they’re black, the lo positions are actually innocent but the suggestion of racism allows the viewer to see it that way or not.
The audience is even willing to dismiss the base of why they left for the vacation anyway….to get away from people. Step back and out the shoe on the other foot.
But this is the point. This is the distraction of the movie & of the world socially & intensifying. The reliance of technology has allowed us to have physical divisions between people simply by not being in person seeing people as the individuals unique of one another but shared human experiences. We’ve relied so much on tech & distracted by the unimportant things that divide us like race, political affiliation, nationality **ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE BOOGIE MAN TO BLAME** all that is known in this movie is what is assumed or guessed by vague clues & common perception of enemies(Iran, Russia, China, & Korea are named in this movie which are all superpowers that can destroy everything but is never actually established and it’s not established that the US is the only place attacked. There’s clues that indicates it’s much further than just US….the planes, the pilot of the plane, oil tanker not taken for benefit but crashed instead….
The deer symbolize many things. They are like the story of the flood being the signs & missed rescue opportunities not seeing the meaning. The deer explain & show clues of just about everything. Them appearing close suddenly but ignored by everyone but the youngest daughter. She’s the only one with no prejudices or mistrust. She pays attention but is ignored. Like the people that are prepper, conspiracy theorists, & even just telling the truth but socially not believed.
They appear again but in huge converged numbers with multiple bucks which is a bad sign when not normal migration pattern. The direction they are moving is away from the danger/epicenter of high intensity targeted frequency microwave radiation weapons. (Deer are less affected than human beings bc human beings can be specifically targeted by frequency, as the deer are also effected absorbing slower but screwing with migratory patterns earth magnetism directs)
We’ve lost our touch & understanding of nature & depend on unreliable sources if this happened.
Humans could work together like the deer herds that are usually divided but came together for survival & greater good.
They ignored the warnings in nature including the flamingos indicating that the destruction had spread all the way from their natural habitat to far north. Still didn’t leave. The son is bit by a tick, a deer tick, the deer he dismissed getting symbolic karma for being a dick instead. The tick is not a regular tick but biological weapon to weaken people for faster breakdown by radiation which is why the son lost teeth. It’s a omen of what is to come soon for all of them.
The daughter is the only one that left the confusion, to be happy, lead there by the deer, to where they could have been safe all along had they followed the deer in the beginning. She watched the last episode friends which is mentioned by the man’s older daughter of a “nostalgia for a time that never existed” what was once gong to be or dreamed of is over. She was the only one that accomplished a goal of happiness before the end of the world,
Easter egg of the friends episode, Rachel got off the plane before it left, the art dealer mom never crashed.

The .. r thingy goes for all nations it seems 😅... Sadly it would be so easy for any people to divide a nation n as 1 person has always said, when everything points to a single group or nation you can bet that's not the truth

Y'all gave Julia's character way too much credit. Let's take a moment. If the man with his daughter were white, do you think she would have greeted then in the same tone and manner? She would have been more relaxed and trusting towards them and that's a fact. She was a straight up Karen. Karen's don't act the same towards their own. So no she was trafffling throughout this movie.

"There are some really great camera shots, but I think they get caught up with trying to do too much."
THANK YOU. They do a lot of "cinematic flexing" in this movie, a lot of things that just had no need to be there. It does give the movie a particular "mood" but they just do it too many times. It's like they JUST got some new toys for the camera and were gitty to use them all the time.

Loved your analysis of everything at the end. I particularly like you mentioning how foreigners have been buying US real estate, although in 2023 the Japanese own very little in the US compared to wealthy Russians and Chinese people, and the Japanese are very much our ally. Bu the Chinese and Russians owning land here... That is something that really worries me. An American can't go to China or Russia and just buy land. Those mfers know better than that. So why do we let them do it here ya know?
Also I do gotta say that it's not really accurate that "immigrants and people from other nations have the numbers" compared to black and white Americans. European Americans are the largest racial group in the country by far, followed by Latin Americans, who are closely followed by African Americans. White people and black people combined outnumber every other group of people by far. Now a lot of people say that immigrants outbreed native citizens, but that's not entirely true either, at least not always. The real issue is that people living in poverty--everywhere in the world--typically have more children than those of higher socioeconomic classes. The same goes for people who are more traditionally religious. And a lot of immigrants in the US are both poor and religious, which explains a moderately higher birth rate. But when people are able to assimilate into a culture and start earning some material wealth, birth rates go down. This is shown by the fact that the poorest countries in the world have the highest birth rates and the wealthiest countries mostly have the lowest birth rates.
But back to the real estate thing... yeah, there is an increasing amount of US real estate being owned by people from China and Russia, our two biggest military rivals. It's something that is a big problem imo.

Racists and Republicans HATE this movie. Once they see Julia's character being racist, they were done. I thought it was a great thought experiment disgusted as a movie. The white Tesla's separated from the black Tesla's surrounded by the white Tesla's. As for Mahershala, his character was the muse, he had to be flat. His character was basically the default narrator. Ethan Hawk's character didn't get out the car to inspect the Teslas, his wife told him to stay in the car. What man's wife would say that? A weak man's wife.

I totally agree Syntell... I'd give it a 7/10. The females were the strongest parts of this movie. Although the male characters were the weakest link... I do think they showcased that the majority of modern day males would act the same way as the leads in this movie... showing their impotence to take action and survive in such an scenario was very accurate. It was only Danny who was equipped and ready, therefore the most likely of all to survive the current situation. So 1 in 4 of the males in this movie had some semblance of a clue, to what to do when the ish hits the fan. All very interesting... Great reaction lads!

I'm going by from where the source material came from. Someone who had access to very top secret material. The three ways to take down a country, well,we're at number 2...how long before 3 happens. We have a guy with so many indictments and yet he's like 50 percent ahead of the closes challenger. This is a person who chooses Dictators over our country. Honestly guys,no one would have ever thought not even in the Twilight Zone that someone like him would ever become president yet he did. That's when it began, that's when he gave a voice to the racist, the very far right and gave them a name "MAGA". This country has not been the same since. I'm 70 years old and my soul has never felt this much hate and evil like I do now. I fear for my grand and great grandkids. Everyone is now allowed to carry a gun,no need for permits anymore. To me the movie was a warning,a wake up call. You can dismiss it as a good movie with some good points or as a warning,an urgent message for those who are willing to listen. That's just my logical intelligent opinion...respectfully.

Some of us are very prepared for exactly this more should follow suit because I do believe it's close
Also this whole new generation Because if you want anybody to obey and follow in the line with the government, all they have to tell you is we'll turn your internet back on if you obey.
And of course, they're not the only generation that is too many people are too dependent on the internet and some couldn't live without it. I do believe that day is here and I do believe that the government would do exactly that they would turn the internet off or the electricity and people would be left helpless. all I can tell people ISIS to get plenty of water on hand more food than what they have and some skills to help you and your loved ones put in these times
We can all see that what's going on. It's not gonna be good this be prepared until I can say

I would like a vehicle from before the mid 80’s. Makes you kind of wonder what did the chef know at the Obama house? They like to act like he drowned because he couldn’t swim, he swam competitively. Remember “you will own nothing and be happy”. They knew 3 decades ago that we need to strengthen our power grid and it was gonna cost about the price of two or three skill fighters now it will cost $17 trillion. We’re already $34 trillion in debt. Just on prescriptions alone 90% of medication come from China. A lot of the products we have today come from China all of those products used to be made in America. Our power, water, fuel, for our homes and vehicles. Hmm, Freemasons would have nothing to do with something like this. By gold by survivable food and buy land if you can get off the grid.. stay strapped
