You asked why mom’s headquarters was run by Sadness rather than Joy. Same thing with dad’s being run by anger. As we get older, our emotions become more complex and mature, evolving into something beyond the base emotion. Sadness, for example, can manifest as empathy and care for others. I think in mom’s care, it shows that she’s empathetic and cares a lot about the feelings of others. As for anger, properly directed anger can be described as drive and passion, making one successful and ambitious. Dad is a driven person, seeking out new opportunities in a new city to improve his families life. He obviously has passion for his family and for everything he does. The more you look into the emotions as presented in this film, the more you realize how accurate and complex it really is.

The fact that the idea of the entire movie was produced and was consulted by real PhD majors in Psychoanalysis, Psychologist, and Social studies makes this create a further view of how the mind behaviors and emotions work. It's also interesting because this is how they interpret these for kids.

The reason Sadness felt the urge to touch the memories is because her instincts knew that was what Riley needed, Joy being a control freak and keeping Sadness from doing her job is basically Riley suppressing her sadness trying to keep up the happy facade.
Sadness is never the problem in this movie, Joy however is a big problem with her thinking until she realizes down in the pit that they need to work together.

Coercing anything for the sake of appearances is toxic and eventually can do more harm than good. The fact that sadness is seen as a bad thing is culturally ingrained into most of us because being sad is equated with being weak, passive, and negative. The truth is that sadness informs nostalgia and is arguably one of the more magnetic emotions when it comes to people we love. Nobody who claims to care about someone will stand by impassively when a loved one is going through hell. Being weak and asking for help is not a bad thing.

This is the best illustration of depression I've ever seen. First her happy memories become sad, then she loses connection with everything she loves. After that happiness is lost but she's told not to feel sad, so that's gone too. And lastly the expansive numbness as everything just shuts down. It's achingly accurate.

The deep levels of meaning behind so many of the scenes continues to amaze me. Especially Bing Bong's final scene. The whole purpose of an imaginary friend is to have someone who reflects your ideas and interests, and is, always, on your side. Bing Bong realized, in the memory dump, that he was literally, and figuratively, holding Riley back by trying to stay real to her. So he sacrificed himself to allow her to grow. Personally, I don't think that he was completely forgotten, as there would still be memories of him, but after that moment, he would no longer feel real to her.
When Joy and Sadness splatted against the window of the tower, I think that Disgust was representing Riley's disgust over her useless anger. It wasn't productive, it just raged. But then she used that anger to create a, literal, breakthrough that allowed her to feel joy and sadness again. It was so well thought out and I keep seeing new analogies every time I watch it.

I think this movie also teaches a lesson to parents that are always telling their kids to just be happy and smile all the time. At the end Riley says "You NEED me to be happy...", and that line has so much power. As a parent of course you don't want your kid to be sad and cry, but you have to acknowledge their feelings and listen so they can understand what they are feeling, too. Sadness is so important in our lives, as someone said here in the comments: empathy and caring derives from sadness, not joy. Telling you kid that is okay to just be sad and cry is a thing that must be normalized. Good thing that nowadays it is more and more common parents being aware of their kids feelings, and listening to them.
    Awesome reaction! Cheers from Brasil~

Personally I feel the most important message of the movie, is about not suppressing emotions. All the breakdown of the islands and the control console is only partly caused by what they make her do.. but I'm sure it's mostly because Sadness isn't allowed to do her job. If you've suffered from depression before, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. The part that gets me the hardest in this movie isn't the sacrifice of Bing Bong.. it's toward the end when Riley finally breaks down and lets her emotions flow.

How it can deconstruct your personality, how it can twist your thoughts into sad memories, how we blame it on "normal" sadness but it's different. Sure the basic story is more about growing up and accepting more complex emotions but tobm me it's also one of the best depiction of how it feels to be depressed too.

One of the things to remember about this movie is when it came out. 2015? So Reilly would be 11 meaning her parents were more than likely late boomer early Gen X. They aren't the best at dealing with their emotions. So the fact that Anger runs dad and Sadness runs mom? tells a story of its own. They both grew up in a very ridged belief that you needed to be a certain way in how you reacted to things and couldn't accept other emotions.
This movie will EVERY time make me cry. Its an unbelievable look into the truth of emotions and how each one makes us truly understand life and the things around us. We cant honestly understand life without each and every emotion, no matter how uncomfortable they may make us.

That one scene, you can tell he was trying to prep for it, but you just can't. No matter how many times I watch it, still water works. I think the day the water works don't run, I need to seek professional help. As heartbreaking as that scene is, to me, it still shows me that I am human and I have a heart. Respect to the Imaginary Friend, and the to the Imaginary Friend we all may have had growing up.

It’s funny how different our experiences can be. You mentioned how difficult being the new kid can be. I’m sure there were times when I felt that, but for me the biggest move was the Summer between 7th and 8th grade. 7th was the worst year of my life, because some of the kids I knew in elementary school started bullying me and there were new bullies as well. I overreacted to teasing, which made the ridicule worse.
But when we moved to a new neighborhood, I had a fresh start and 8th grade was wonderful. It helped that the school had uniforms, curbing egos a bit. That year I met my two best friends as well, Jacob and Alex.

  • @Skye_Writer

I love to watch reactors get so mad at Sadness and then have that turn around moment, even before Joy gets it, about why she matters. Nobody listened when Sadness said she didn't know why she was doing this, she just felt COMPELLED to. She hasn't been out of control at any OTHER time, she hasn't been making memories sad just because. It isn't until this point in her life when Sadness starts feeling compelled to change the memories. Riley NEEDED to grieve, and she didn't get that opportunity...even when she was alone by the railing. Once Joy FINALLY gets it through her head that she cannot have complete control over all of Riley's memories -- no one emotion can, or should -- is when Riley has the chance to experience the emotions she's feeling so deeply.
I can't wait to see Inside Out 2.

Riley isn't being an angsty teen.... she's not a teenager yet. She's undergoing a LOT of stress having to keep this happy facade up. As someone who moved to different states 7 times as a kid i related a LOT to Riley. Unfortunately i didn't have the supportive parents Riley did. Forced happiness was all i knew until i moved out. This whole movie shows that children have more complex emotions and parents need to stop ignoring that and expecting kids to be happy 24/7

39:45 it's not just animation, live action is a lot more intense feelings than real life! Mufasas death is heartbreaking, but deaths of certain characters in *LOST* or *The Walking Dead* hit me harder than real life deaths. Movies can take out conflicting feelings and memories and just give you the pure CONCENTRATED stuff that they know will have a much stronger effect. (and it doesnt allow you to use the walls and protection we use in real life)

This was so very well done. The reason this impacted me so much, is because Riley was masking her sadness with fake joy. But once she opened up and was honest about her true feelings with her parents; she learned that they missed home too. We all can feel so bad inside because none of us, are ever, honest with ourselves, or with one another person, about how we truly feel. If her parents had exposed their own sadness of moving rather than that fake it-to-you-make-it attitude, Riley would not have felt so alone. She hid her feelings because she thought that everyone else in her family had moved on. It makes you feel broken when you can't get over things as quickly as other people around you purport themselves as doing.

One of the best movies ever - how to creatively bring emotions to life and how "Nostalgia" will always play a massive part in your life and is strong enough to get you through tough times. The visuals and script in this movie starts to get the tears flowing but Michel Giacchino's score's turns that tap on to the max. Awesome video guys.

Every emotion has orbs but Sadness specifically goes for Joys orbs, so for the character it makes sense to stop that.
None of them realise sadness is needed, not even Sadness know it. Its joy who realises it.
Its ok to be sad but its also ok to fight through and find Joy. Its all about the persons and the current situation
