  • If you're struggling to get the ignition key to turn (and tried of using a hammer or your hand to tap the key to align the tumblers), this is for you. The fix is surprisingly easy - you can do this with just a little help from me and Dorman!
    We did this work on a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 ST. However, Dorman makes the same part and similar procedure is used on the following vehicles.
    CHRYSLER ASPEN 2007
    DODGE DAKOTA 2001-2010
    DODGE DURANGO 2001-2007

    MITSUBISHI RAIDER 2006-2009
    Jeep Cherokee XJ
    Jeep Liberty
    Dodge Caravan
    Dodge Town and Country
    Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Jeep Wrangler
    Jeep Rubicon
    Chrysler Cirrus
    Chrysler Voyager
    Plymouth Grand Voyager
    PT Cruiser

    This Dorman 9247-93 cylinder is available from Amazon and from Rockauto. I used Rockauto. The Amazon part makes you choose between “auto” and “manual” and it means no re-learn or re-learn. The one from Rockauto that I used was “with re-learn”.

    This was on a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. You need a pretty thin T20 to fit in the holes under the steering column and not a "multi-bit" type screwdriver as it won't fit. In addition, a dedicated multi-tool with all sizes on it (shaped like a pocket knife) won't be long enough.

    As always thanks for the videos. Lifesaver! What are the symptoms of a bad lock cylinder? I have the same truck & replaced ignition switch but still have all dash lights on. Sometimes it starts & sometimes it doesn’t. When it does start it’s stuck in park & none of my gauges work & shift indicator isn’t working.

    • @TallFamilyFilms
      @TallFamilyFilms  Год назад

      If it’s a smart key problem, the truck will start but won’t stay running longer than about 10 seconds.
      Your problem sounds different. One thing that prevents the shifter from working is a small button that rests against the brake pedal. If that button is defective, the truck gets start in park. You can easily see it under the driver dash - just follow the brake pedal up. It’s a cheap part available at your local parts store.

      I would suspect it would fix the hard to turn part for sure. I’m not positive on the door chime, but there’s a good chance because that chime is directly connected to the cylinder - there’s really not much else inside there

      Assuming you don’t have the chip-key anti theft technology (I point out at the end how to see if you do on an 06 - or check your owners manual to see what all the dash lights mean so you can check on yours)…
      If you don’t have this, you can literally use any Dodge Ram key and make it work with this cylinder. You could buy a used key on eBay (People sell them just for the fobs) or maybe a hardware store could cut you one. I’m not sure if they can without a sample key - I’ve never asked. Note that these won’t unlock your doors with the physical key anymore but you can program the fob to do that. Just don’t let the fob battery die :)
      If you do have anti-theft, you’re going to need an uncut chip key and a locksmith who has the computer to match it to your truck. Not cheap. I’d get two or 3 keys as the additional ones are usually very cheap.
      Let me know how this turns out. I’m curious.

      @@curlyheadian8607 Unless you used a tiny screwdriver do you probably didn’t get it in deep enough to mess up the tumblers (but that depends on how hard you hit it I guess). Your best bet is going to be the original key and tapping all around that cylinder and key with the hammer.
      The new kit comes with a new lock cylinder and the housing (the part that has the button on it that you press in). So I suppose you could put a socket extension under the button and force it back in with a hammer. What if you have lost the keys

    • @TallFamilyFilms
      @TallFamilyFilms  3 года назад

      So, this will be more complicated if you have the chip-key technology (anti theft). If not, this ignition lock would do the trick and start the truck using any dodge key you can buy. But that key won’t open the doors nor will the key fob work.
      If your truck does have anti theft, you will need a locksmith as this is not something most people have the equipment to fix. Call around for the best price and buy blank keys on eBay (a lot cheaper) and ask if they will cut your keys that you already have - buy a few. I once heard a locksmith that charged the same price no matter how many keys I wanted.

      @@MarksUpholstery that sounds like an actuator problem. I had this on my 2006 as well. I didn’t want to disassemble the dash so I ended up using a piece of wood on the passenger side floor board to force the actuator to a position that provided some floor and some vents and screwed it into place. I should have made a video of that one but it was years ago. I’ll try to take a picture when I’m back home.

    • @TallFamilyFilms
      @TallFamilyFilms  3 года назад +2

      There is no relearn for this. That’s why it’s so great! The chip key (transponder) security for the truck is handled between the key and low frequency radio waves sent from the car (but not the ignition itself). So you can replace the ignition but the security between the chip key and the truck remains intact. What you saw in the video is exactly what happened - perfect start on the first try.

    • @TallFamilyFilms
      @TallFamilyFilms  Год назад

      Gee Wayne - sorry for trying to help you out. The only reason you need to key to turn is to give you a handle to pull on the cylinder so there are other solutions to that.
      The reason it won’t turn is because the tumblers(tiny teeth of metal) are sticking. You can tap the key with a hammer when it’s in the cylinder (be gentle but firm - make sure you hit it straight on). Another trick is to turn the key backwards before going forward. Lastly, get some graphite powder from a hardware store and put a lot in your key and try to get a bunch into the lock cylinder (being powder this is easier said than done).
      I’d you still can’t turn it, try to use a pick or something to remove the cylinder.

      Tap the key with a hammer - lightly but firmly. Right on the end of the key going straight into the shaft.
      Also try turning the key backwards first, then forward.

  • @AdamDeAloe

    You should consider changing the title of your video. Just remove the "Key won't turn?" part. You're clearly able to turn your key with no problem, so this video isn't really for people who can't turn the key. Something, probably a tumbler, is lodged in there and my key won't go in all the way, so of course I'm completely unable to turn it, so I have no idea how I'll be able to remove the cylinder to replace it without being able to turn the key to allow the latch thing to be depressed.

    • @TallFamilyFilms
      @TallFamilyFilms  Год назад

      Thanks for the feedback. Something to try is to get some graphite lubricant at the hardware store. Then use a small hammer to tap the back of the key as you’re trying to insert it.
      In my situation the key wouldn’t turn 90% of the time.

      @@TallFamilyFilms Thanks that worked perfectly! The weird thing is, I've replaced the cylinder and I'm having the same problem with the brand new one. I'm gonna remove it and see if there's some kind of debris between the cylinder and the slot it goes into.

      @@AdamDeAloe I had a similar issue with my new one as well. Over time it just went away completely- my theory is that the old key is worn and doesn’t get the tumblers defined well in the cylinder but I honestly don’t know. The issue with my new cylinder also wasn’t instant - it didn’t start happening for weeks or months and then one day went away completely. Good luck with yours!

      Yeah, I feel ya. Read through the comments. The best advice is to tap it with a hammer. Firmly, but not hard - use a small hammer and hit it straight to not bend the key.
      Second - spray graphite powder in there. Nothing liquid.
      Third - spray dry lube in there. It’s sort of liquid but dries.
      Fourth - tap it with a hammer :)

      @@desertoutlaw3317 LOL. Easy now! That pin on the bottom won’t come up if the key won’t turn. That pin is all that that holds it in. I’m not saying you should do this because I haven’t but that entire cylinder and the pin are aluminum. I properly place 1/4 socket extension hit with a hammer on that pin might shear off whatever locks the pin.
      Oh, one more thing. When this started getting really bad for me, I found that turning the key backwards before going forward helped quite a bit.
