I bought a 2019 Ram 1500 crewcab 4x4 Laramie. I got it in March 2019 for $45,000 and its list price was $57,150. I have owned every truck out there, and bar none, it is the best truck I have ever owned. It drives like a Mercedes, and it is super safe and the best mileage I have ever had for a 6 or 8 cylinder truck. My 1987 Nissan Hard Body with a 4 cylinder and 5 speed manual got the same 22 mpg highway as my Ram, but it was half the truck and only cost $5700 .

I too have a 2019 Ram, I average about 21 mpg with the E Tourque 5.7. I did have the bearing fail on the motor generator. Dodge replaced it on warranty.
Wow 430??? I have same year same model. My 4.7 has 270000. I had top end redone when my gasket blew 7 years back runs fine other than the tick that it always had but I run diesel oil which quiet it down maybe I have some miles left 😂
Scotty, Love the channel and the unfiltered opinions of all different vehicles! I'm an owner of a 2020 RAM 1500 Warlock 3.6 V6 No added Turbos or anything just under 40K Miles I've put on it. Not the "Fanciest" not too much added new tech in it, but serves me well for Hauling and Towing and I really like this RAM Truck!
I got the 2019 tradesman 3.6 that doesn’t have the start stop. I was out wondering the lot and when I popped the hood to that, my Mecanic side spoke to me. As for the engine, very simple, tons of room under the hood, the right amount of power I need for my job, etc and a pretty solid reliability record. Just shy of 4 years and 140K miles without a hitch, it’s been a great truck and has paid for itself many times over for what I do. And surprisingly it pulls very well for lighter loads like small tractors, hay bales or the side by side.
Had a 2014 Ram 1500 bought in 15 sold in 17. Was happy with everything except the radio. Went through 5 of em. I got 22-24MPG on the hwy. 16 around town.
Some things are exaggerated about vehicles, some aren’t. No matter what you own, take care of it. In hindsight I would have bought a Tundra (V8), but I went with Ram and I’ve been pretty happy with it, but I’m anal about maintenance.
Had my etorque for two years and it has been great! I shut off the start/stop if I am going through something like a drive through. The transmission has been great as well.....same for the 2016 I had. I rented an F150 with the 10 speed and they can keep that.
Have a 2020 Ram 1500 Big Horn 4x4 w/ eTorque. Had the PCM go bad twice! Been at dealership for 7 weeks total under warranty. I pray the issue is resolved. I believe the stop/start system is the problem. Prayers
I have a 22 Ram Hemi e torque with 7,500 miles. It’s a Bighorn with a lot of options. So far the only complaint I have is the Uconnect is glitchy. I plan on keeping it for a few more years. Hoping with Chrysler getting rid of the Hemi it will create a demand when I trade it. I have a feeling the resale will be strong because that turbo charged V6 will be junk.
Actually this Ram generation are pretty reliable truck, the super reliable and powerful V8 hemi engine with ZF 8 speed transmission, one of the best transmissions
I have a 2020 Laramie 4wd with the 5.7 Hemi and etorque and it averages less than 11 mpg. I have never seen better than 17mpg on the highway. Thats not the truck's fault. I drive a mile to work stop and go and remote start it for 5-10 mins because i dont want to scrape windows. On the highway we go over 80mph in Montana and the truck has a 3" lift and 35" tires. It's a great truck though. Can't believe how well it handles and rides even with a lift. Tows a camper like a dream too. Interior is amazing. Mine has 140,000 miles on it.
Great review Uncle Scotty! I’ve had 3 5th generation Rams and everything you said is spot on. Thank you for being an amazing mechanic I love the videos and your passion for cars. 💪🏼 ❤️
To avoid ever having the Hemi lifter tick, use a good quality 5w30 or 0w40 fully synthetic engine oil like Mobil 1 FS or Valvoline. If you can afford it and have the budget for it, I would use Redline 5w30 as its additive package is perfect for the Hemi engine. Also do short oil change intervals like 3000 - 4000 miles. Nothing more. Change the transmission fluid every 50,000 miles. This is what I've learned over the years with two Ram trucks and 3 times having the dreaded tick.
@@bjornironsides6474 Agreed, but not in this case. When I bought my truck, brand new, that is exactly what I did. I followed the manual to the letter and still got the Hemi lifter tick. I then learned that even the main dealer over here does not use 5w20 like my manual suggested, because it would too thin for my climate. But they're happy to sell it to me. If I take my truck to them and pay them for the oil changes, they will use 5w30. Also the OCI were too long using such thin oil and so it was slowly killing my engine. I experienced the dreaded lifter tick 3 times in two different trucks before I found a strategy that works a 100%.
Did the oil changes every 3-4k with oil from the list for the Hemi, still got the Hemi tick and had to replace lifters and cam at 175,000 miles. Have a 2011 1500 quadcab. Hate the VVT feature, just hate it. Give me 8 cylinders all the time.
@jobabs what kind of 175,000 miles? Hell if all I had to do at that mileage is lifters and cam I'd be pretty happy. I've had 5 rams 3 with the hemi all over 100k miles and have yet to have any major issues. But, I've also used them all as trucks, hauling, towing a lot, and off roading. I watched this video because I'm thinking of trading my 17 rebel for a loaded 21 laramie night edition with that etorque. And had heard some interesting things about it. This clarifies things.
Scotty is one of those people we wish they could live forever. And I believe he still had many years ahead, the man is just unstoppable, and good for him, the world needs people like him. God bless Scotty and his family.
I bought one of these in 2022 and have enjoyed it. I bought it specifically for sitting and driving long distances. It's ridiculously comfortable. What I can't stand about it though is how much the truck spies on me. It records everywhere I go and I get emails about oil changes, tire inflation, etc.... I use it for business so I'll keep it long enough to depreciate it out but my next truck is going to be a bench seat square body from the 80s or 90s that doesn't narc on me.
Wow, Scotty didnt hate on Ram? My 21 ram 5.7 4wd (no etorque) gets 20 to 21 avg MPG with 80٪ highway. I still love the truck at 35k miles. No issues, No engine tick ever. Hopefully that continues
@@SyrusLangi suppose i should say highway driving is mostly rural 2 lanes going low 60s. Going mid to upper 70s on the interstate will drop the mpgs by 2 or 3 at most... and my drive is relatively hilly and curvy. Im pretty impressed with the mpgs on this truck.
2021 Ram 1500. Worst pickup I've owned. Multiple front end issues, idling issues, gas and break petal assembly replaced, and other issues. Spent more time in the warranty department than driving it. All under 20,000 miles.
Interesting observation of the hemi tick design flaw and start stop. Of course the police would override that feature and the problem would continue. However, when you talk to ram they say it is an oil change issue. Other people have agreed with your assessment of the oil splash issue. Great video and job as always.
The height of the CAM is the MAJOR issue with the 3rd gen HEMIs. They were splash oiled....and still are. But only really properly lubed when running at 2000+ RPM. Do not baby these engines. They will not last if you do.
2016 power wagon here with 139k paid it off and a week later lifter failed ate the cam and another lifter was on it's way out. Sadly we pulled our savings to pay it off and then borrowed 3k to fix it myself...brand new chrysler lifters, cam, head gaskets, timing cover gasket, water pump gasket, manifold gaskets, valve cover gaskets, 2gal of mopar 10yr coolant concentrate and pennzoil PUP 0w40 and they still dont sound right. My 05 hemi 1500 4x2 regularly got 18mpg, sold it running great with 238k miles...
@@curtisrenninger1886 i changed the oil type on my 5th gen rebel to 5w 30 vs 5w 20. I'm hearing that this has helped others completely eliminate the tick. 1k miles in, runs the same as before (just fine).
Im not crazy about etorque but the etorque system is covered under the Federal Emission Warranty for 8 years / 80,000 miles which includes: Belt Driven Hybrid Starter Generator Assembly Catalytic Converter Powertrain Control Module Power Pack Unit - 48 Volts
Great video Scotty I have an 2018 ram 1500 hemi I love it I drive manly highway to work 150 miles a day I get 18 mpg and it has 200000 miles I change the oil when the truck tells me to no engine problems runs stronger then new BUT exhaust manifolds cracked and some bolts broke had it fixed and only to happen again besides that the truck is awesome
As a Ford guy i have to admit i like the look of the newer Rams. If im going to buy a new truck id personally avoid the Hybrid ones. Just a traditional V8 is good for me.
I own a 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 crew cab, 6’4” bed--I have gotten as much as 22 MPG on the highway, but normally avg 20 Hwy and 17 city. My second Ram…gave my first one (2017 Ram 1500 4x4 quad cab) to my adult son. Zero mechanical problems with my 2021 at nearly 30K miles. The 2017 has some knocking at 100K miles and my son (who is a mechanic) carried an engine and other heavy car parts around in the bed if the truck for about a year until the rear differential went out….he couldn’t just order the gear to replace, he had to order the entire rear axle….
My son in law has his own Garage. Been Repairing vehicles for 30 years. Thank the Lord. Every time I've been to his shop he has 10 to 20 vehicles waiting. Just word of mouth and loyal customers.
My 2022 Ram with the Hemi 8 speed and no Etorque avg. 25.4 MPG from MN to Utah and back burning 91 octane. Our other 2015 Ram with the Hemi with the 6 speed avg. 24.7 on the same trip using 91 octane. Both 4wd.
They will be back stellantis will learn that combustion is going no where look at ford they are only selling 60 th anniversary with v8 only whats that tell you
Just got the 2020 Bighorn today. Love the ride and the overall feel of the truck. Will be driving a lot, but liked it better than the Ford or Chevy. Wanted an older style Tundra, but just could not find any.
I have same truck. Do you ever have problems with it jerking when it's trying to figure out what gear to be in? Mine does when you're just cruising at low speeds, around 1.5k rpm. Can't decide gears.. jerks for a second.
A rare Scotty video where he doesn't mention Toyota. I wouldn't worry too much about the Italian electric motor, we have a lot of industrial motors from Italy where I work and they hold up well. At least it's right up on top and easy to change if it does fail, not buried between the engine and transmission.
My 2016 Big Horn that I bought used last year was a bargain. It was certified pre owned and I paid thousands less than what it's worth, I have a bumper to bumper warranty for the life of the loan. The only problem I had was the waterpump. I noticed a puddle underneath it when I took the trash out and figured out what the problem was. I drove it down the street to my mechanic and 115 bucks instead of 750 and it was good to go!.
Scotty I have a 5.7 2019 without the etorque system Or Auto stop-start and I'm averaging on the highway about 22 to 25 miles to the gallon hwy my ram was built in Detroit Michigan I heard they're going to move that plant to Mexico and you need the 392 rear end in order to pull 11,500 lb but not in that configuration four-door short bed
Actually the 3rd gen EcoDiesel is freaking incredible. They’re amazing engines with practically zero common problems. Some one offs here and there, but mostly really well built engines with amazing mileage.
@@antonio4114 there are three different generations of the EcoDiesel engine. Each with their own design and such. First gen was horrible, the update second generation was slightly better but still had problems, third update came in 2019 with the current gen truck itself, and was a full and complete redesign of the EcoDiesel engine. They basically looked at previous two versions, and went all out to fix it and make it as robust as possible.
I had a 22 Rebel EcoDiesel. Needed a motor at 11,000 miles. Traded it on the GMC 1500 Denali. Better power, better towing and better fuel economy by far. The dealer recommended I dump the EcoDiesel. It’s that bad.
@@markhartman7939 every manufacturer has its faults, no one is safe from it today, but the vast majority of third gen EcoDiesel is marvelous little engines. Your situation sounds a lot more like an exception. 1st and 2nd gen were truly trash, nothing to hide there. Absolutely. Gen3 though? Basically they went all out fixing everything they possibly could before the entire diesel department was shut down lol
Thumbs up for the Ram in this video. Mine has the Italian 3.0 liter diesel engine in it that Scotty is warning us about. Fingers crossed I get many more happy healthy miles out of it!
The dealer I bought my 2020 hemi ram at had 9 eco diesels on the lot corporate wouldnt allow them to sell. Known problems and inability to meet emissions targets
@@Cherokeelion Interesting! I’ve never heard of a dealer doing that. Around me they sold like hot cakes, dealers couldn’t keep them on the lot for long.
@@blanketboyactual5264 yeah i just bought mine and asked about the line of ecodiesels and they were being held, not available to buy. That made me look at the hemis
The problem with the hybrid stop start is that you are still using an engine with a pushrod valve system - too many moving parts which wear out early and break and cause problems.. So there is that. best Bruce Peek
Run Motorkote every other oil change and it will help keep it lubricated. I use it with my avenger too. Works great and keeps the engine feeling young.
Yes! That should be standard for all Hemis and or motors. I have been using MotorKote in all my engines for well over 15 years even in a boat motor lower unit, no issues in one single engine cars atvs boats even my gas water pressure pump 😂
So, ram is like 2nd on the maket in reliability according to jd power. Ford trucks were at 13th and gm trucks were at 23rd, gm small trucks were 29th. It's been that way for years now.
I enjoy this gen of ram, they really knocked it out of the part with the 5th gen, probably the second best full size you can get now (tundra will always be number 1)
Omg! I have one of these as a loaner and I hate this e torque setup! It’s so hard to be smooth at start stops situations. Between the engine shutting off and the engaging of the electric motor at the same time as the engine comes to life, you’re always getting mild whiplash. When you’re stopped and want to creep forward it lunges and then you over compensate with the brakes to avoid a collision… the rest of the time it’s fine but as someone who values making their passengers comfortable it’s a nightmare. Side note: most people have no clue how to be smooth drivers so I understand how this setup didn’t bother anyone responsible for the design.
They say electric motors have instant torque but from my experience it's just not entirely instant. It's similar to putting an electric power ratchet on a bolt or getting it to start spinning first and then putting it on the bolt. Many times it will undo a bolt that it cannot do when it hasn't already begun spinning. So the torque does seem to be slightly different once it's already spinning...
I have 2022 Ram 1500 4x4 crew cab sport...❤ it to death 3inch motofab lift in front rear 2inch lift I feel like king 🤴 of the streets later 33x12.50r20 tires maybe camper shell...😊
I have a 2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn 4x4 with 233k miles. I’ve been thru 3-4 sets of rotars/brake pads, a plastic part attached to the radiator cracked, and 6 sets of tires. It was our main vehicle until last year and now pulls a trailer and 1,300 lbs lawn mower every day. For years I lived down a 10 mile dirt road in the mountains and never a issue. Maybe I’m just lucky but it’s great for me.
Well, they added yet another expensive to repair system (etorque). I’m not a fan of the shifter or the push-button 4x4 selector in my 2017, and now there’s another thing that can break. I also wish it had traditional power steering. Even so, it’s been good to me so far. Just not looking forward to those things breaking.
Our 2021 Ram with e-torque has been great. There has been a few problems but those were because of the previous owner. Ram boxes are great! In town we get 12mpg Highway we get just over 18 Hauling our camper we get 8
@@RatelHBadger it was minor stuff. Something with the right tire and then a small dent in the glovebox. The tire problem is fixed, glovebox still has a small dent.
What is etorque? Sounds like a gimmick to rob you. Youre getting 12 mpg with it. My old endless money 2001 dodge ram got the same fuel economy and there was no gimmicky system and it was still an endless money pit
Scotty you mentioned potential sources of that noise and missed a component, the sway bar links and bushings. That’s a very common source on many vehicles, especially when the noise occurs when you rock the vehicle side to side, which you were doing in the video.
Scotty I remember in Houston you were on the side of the road trying to fix that Ram in the heat! That is where that Ram is headed, broke down on the side of the road.
Do you think Scotty knows how much he means to us? That a lot of people watch him just because we enjoy his company so to speak. Entertainment and a lesson. Why couldn't college professors be a little more like Scotty. Oh I know. This man actually cares.

I drove a 2019 6.7 powerstroke for work. After about an hour idle it'll automatically rev itself up to 2-2.5k rpms for a few minutes
Don’t idle diesels.
Just shut off ignition key
with vehicle STILL in DRIVE
with your foot STILL on
brakes, THEN shift in PARK. CB
I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 (it has about 90,000 miles) one of the better vehicles I have ever owned!
Some things are exaggerated about vehicles, some aren’t. No matter what you own, take care of it. In hindsight I would have bought a Tundra (V8), but I went with Ram and I’ve been pretty happy with it, but I’m anal about maintenance.
Irrelevant
I have a 3.6L classic 4th gen Ram. Love it so far! Simple and a 6.5' box.
Prayers
I really like the ZF 8speed. What I don't like is how to change its fluid. But hey, 50k intervals makes it less of a pain.
Expensive too
I have a 2020 Laramie 4wd with the 5.7 Hemi and etorque and it averages less than 11 mpg.
What would impress me, is it the hybrid motor had two belts. One to start the engine, and another to keep the AC running when the engine turns off.
Great idea! I have never thought of that. I'm sure there's a way for someone to customize it that way? Do you think so?
I would worry that running the AC would DEVOUR that battery's power...
@@logicalrationalfishing7481 You are correct, it doesn't have the capacity for that.
Scotty's a trip, a great trip! He is so much fun to watch!
Great review Uncle Scotty! I’ve had 3 5th generation Rams and everything you said is spot on. Thank you for being an amazing mechanic I love the videos and your passion for cars. 💪🏼 ❤️
This man has intelligence and common sense. May GOD protect and bless his family.
It’s rare to have both…
To avoid ever having the Hemi lifter tick, use a good quality 5w30 or 0w40 fully synthetic engine oil like Mobil 1 FS or Valvoline.
Put the oil in that the manual says to use. ONLY.
@@jobabs you mean MDS
@jobabs what kind of 175,000 miles? Hell if all I had to do at that mileage is lifters and cam I'd be pretty happy. I've had 5 rams 3 with the hemi all over 100k miles and have yet to have any major issues. But, I've also used them all as trucks, hauling, towing a lot, and off roading. I watched this video because I'm thinking of trading my 17 rebel for a loaded 21 laramie night edition with that etorque. And had heard some interesting things about it. This clarifies things.

We not gonna speak that into the atmosphere
I have a 2022 ram and love it. 25 mpg on the highway at 75mph. In the city only 15mpg unfortunately. Rides better than my Silverado did
I bought one of these in 2022 and have enjoyed it.
Scotty you are amazing. Thank you for everything you do to help us. You give me hope that there are still good honest people in the world.
???Amazing?? I have a different word
Wow, Scotty didnt hate on Ram? My 21 ram 5.7 4wd (no etorque) gets 20 to 21 avg MPG with 80٪ highway. I still love the truck at 35k miles. No issues, No engine tick ever. Hopefully that continues
How are you managing 20 to 21? Flat lands? I'm in GA and 2wd rebel gets maybe 16mpg combined and 18 on the highway (long trip).
I had to wait a month and a half just to get that battery behind the backseat replaced. No loaner, thanks Ram
I wonder if you tune them and increase the idol speed some if it would help
Im not crazy about etorque but the etorque system is covered under the Federal Emission Warranty for 8 years / 80,000 miles which includes:
Belt Driven Hybrid Starter Generator Assembly
Catalytic Converter
Powertrain Control Module
Power Pack Unit - 48 Volts
I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee with an early model 5.7 Hemi and it's been a solid and dependable rig.
Same. I agree.
I think the new gmc sierra is the best looking truck
I'm a old school Chevy guy, but the new rams do look pretty good. I do have a soft spot for the second gen dodge rams too.
They look better but conk out more take your pick.
@@edwardschmitt5710 id take any old truck over a new one. The least amount of electronics the better.
Got to jack up under the control arm to load the suspension, in order to properly check the ball joints on a sla suspension.
Jim press really changed Chrysler when he went to work for them. I love the regenitive breaking on my hybrid!!!
What I would give to know a mechanic like you in my area. Great video as always!
Both 4wd.

Scotty Kilmer. The Andy Rooney of the automotive world.
I get 18 mpg in my dually cummins....that's crazy! And I was thinking about downsizing? Absolutely not
My 2016 Big Horn that I bought used last year was a bargain.
Love these new Rams, looking at getting one.
Some one offs here and there, but mostly really well built engines with amazing mileage.
what does third generation mean?

It’s a known trash engine . Doesn’t matter how many finger you cross you will not get a lot out of it

I had over 10000 hrs of idle time on my hemi 5.7 before I had lifter replacement at 235k miles.
The electric Motor doesn’t do jack shie just restarts the engine and only pulls the serpentine belt for half a tire rotation. It’s a Gimmick
Use a Jackstand ..
Or at least put the removed wheel under it once you remove it .
" Its cheaper to Replace a Damaged Rim
than a Damaged Limb ".
The problem with the hybrid stop start is that you are still using an engine with a pushrod valve system - too many moving parts which wear out early and break and cause problems.. So there is that.

Scotty, thank you for all the information you show and tell us about.
The 3.92 rear end option gives it more towing power also.
I am the truck owner, and YES!!!… the noise went away 👍🏼 Thanks, Scotty!!!
Scotty please use jack stands. I know you weren't under it long but anything can happen.
I had a family member die from a car falling on him, I use jack stands and even give the car a good push and re-check before getting underneath.
Not now with their garbage v6 turbo
@@riz7032 They are ditching the V6 in the Tacoma for a turbo I4. Eventually they'll all be turbocharged, hybrid, or fully electric unfortunately.
LOL tundra

Maybe, but who wants to drive an ugly inside and out truck. Lol
Side note: most people have no clue how to be smooth drivers so I understand how this setup didn’t bother anyone responsible for the design.
so the real question is, the clicking sound was fixed?

So Scotty, you never really said what it is about this truck that scares the crap out of you. 🤔🤷♂️😄

Maybe I’m just lucky but it’s great for me.
Well, they added yet another expensive to repair system (etorque). I’m not a fan of the shifter or the push-button 4x4 selector in my 2017, and now there’s another thing that can break.
