The Virus of Life is the best song on this album imo. It's so dark and haunting, plus it made Paul (the bass player at the time) stand out. Again, the instrumentation is badass on this record, everybody had a chance to shine, and The Virus of Life was Paul's time to shine.

It's so funny to watch your initial reaction to Slipknot on their first album where you looked absolutely terrified and said that people who listen to this kind of stuff have serious issues, to the band growing on you so much by their third album that you're almost in tears over how good it is, and actually said it will be a regular addition to your playlist. Kudos to you for truly giving them a fair chance. Now that you actually "get" their music now, you should go back and re-listen to their first album again. It might sound different to you now!

Believe it or not..there are 9 members in Slipknot:
Corey Taylor - Lead Vocals (also lead vocalist for Stone Sour)
Shawn "Clown" Crahan - Percussion / vocals
    Joey Jordison - Drums
Chris Fehn - Percussion / backing vocals
Jim Root - Lead / Rhythm Guitars
Mick Thomson - Lead / Rhythm Guitars
    Paul Grey - Bass/ backing vocals (R.I.P.)
Craig Jones - samples, MIDI controller, keyboards, synthesizer
    Sid Wilson - turntables
And they perform their entire concerts in MASKS......check them out!

  • @shreykundra7

I agree with the review. This is the best album by Slipknot, Iowa is a close second to me. The progression on this album is what stands out to me, and that includes the songs you didn't like, Circle and Vermilion Pt. 2. I think they're fantastic.
And I have to disagree with you on the metal on headphones theory. I love listening to heavy music on a good pair of headphones. Get a pair of Bose or AKG cans, and you can hear so many little things that you wouldn't hear blaring out on speakers in a car, for example. I do love listening to my music loud too, but I study the instrumentation on headphones. The best mixes I've heard have been on my Bose headphones. The worst cans, in my opinion, for heavy music are Beats. They're too much about the bass, the mix isn't balanced at all. The small little nuances in one of best progressive metal mixes I've ever heard is an album called "Altered State" by Tesseract, are so insane....and you would mostly miss those little tidbits in the mix if you only heard it blaring on a speaker system. That album on a nice balanced pair of headphones/earphones is pure aural orgasm.

See I would much rather listen to Iowa and Slipknot I really did not like their newer albums. Don't get me wrong Vol. 3 and All hope is gone and The Grey Chapter have good songs but as a whole albums I don't like them. I LOVE Iowa and Slipknot because it's so heavy and dark and Corey actually screams in those albums

They are a creative band. The masks, use of beercans, their own style of soloing and drumming. I know double bass isnt new at all, but it has a little more technicality. Kind of sad that Joey(The drummer) isnt going to play for them anymore. The next album (All Hope is Gone) is the last to feature Paul (Bassist) and Joey(Drummer).

Josh White- Puller Of Strings the guitars on the first two albums were subdued partly by their producer, Ross Robinson, who wanted to capture the "live feel" of the band. Obviously at the cost of instrumentation. On Vol. 3 Rick Rubin came in, who was more focused on refining the individual parts to form a more cohesive whole.

Since you asked, the guitars used on this album consisted of mainly Ibanez, BC Rich, Fender, and Charvel. But the most important fact for the tone is that they both recorded the album with the Rivera KR100 (with different power tubes for that Ying Yang effect) which is one of the juiciest tonal amp brands ever made.

The vocalist, Corey Taylor, was goin through some hard times recording this album as well as he was struggling with sobriety. Which is why a lot of the hardcore fans where a little puzzled at how drastically different his voice was and even started a rumor that corey was replaced....He himself has stated that he wasn’t completely satisfied with the way his vocals were recorded. But regardless it’s a great album and was a nice deviation from their darker more chaotic first 2 albums. As you heard there was a more melodic tone and flow to these tracks, along with a much different cadence; and they even placed a couple of softer slow songs in there.....Iowa is still my favorite, but this is a really great album and my favorite mask set.

May or may not get buried, and I know you're crazy busy with requests, but as a one of sort of deal, It'd be interesting to see what you think of The Keeper of the Seven Keys part 1 and 2. Basically the gold standard for power metal if you're interested. Though power metal is a bit more upbeat than the likes of Slipknot lol

The next album is gonna sound like a whole new band. Because the singer changed his vocal technique. You will notice them change instrumentally.

Hahaha you mean they showed up. There are two guitarists. Both can take the lead. Mick Thompson and Jim Root. As you can hear in Opium of the people there are two guitars playing the solo.

Jim Root (Lead Guitarist) Plays A Fender Telecaster With EMG Pickups While Mick Thompson (Rhythm Guitar) Plays A Signature Ibanez With Seymour Duncan Blackout Pickups. Sorry About Being Specific Lmao
