    I found an app on my phone that helped me count my steps. It suggested that I set a goal of 20,000 steps a day. So I got off of my 350 lb behind and started walking. At first, it was to loose weight, it was a little discouraging because I wasn't able to meet my daily goal. Since I was living in a new area, I decided to use my walking time as a period of exploration. Before I knew it I had exceeded my 20,000 steps a day and looked forward to my daily walks. I know more about my new area than the people who were born and raised here. Also I went from 350 lbs to 292. One morning I woke up to start my walk and I could hear the distinct sound of rain and thunder outside. I am not walking through a rain storm, that's just not safe especially in the area I live in. I counted 50 steps from my front door to my kitchen sink and I started my walk indoors. For me, because of a health issue it takes me 4 hours to knock out 20,000 steps. Someone younger and healthier could probably do it in 2 and half hours. By the way, yes I have health problems but the walking is definitely brought about some big improvements.

      Yeah it really does work. Heavier people will see results quicker because they burn more calories walking (because it take more energy to move more weight) but even me as a fit 150 lb 21 year old still see noticeable fat loss.

    Your videos are so motivational! I started intermittent fasting because i got a bad report from the doctor. So i decided i needed to do something. I would love to get to omad but 2 meals a day seems to work for me and most importantly it is something i can stick to for the long haul. I worked my way up to about 15,000 steps a day. I started with just 6,000 and moved up. I am now down 18 lbs. In 3 months.

    As an experiment to see if I would lose any fat; for 7 straight days I ate 1,600 calories per day and all my meals were well balanced meals with healthy fats, protein, carbs and I walked 10k steps per day. At the end of 1 week I lost 3.8 pounds. More daily activity helps to burn calories. Weight training builds muscle. You need both. Peace, Daniel, California.

      For reference, what's your TDEE / BMR? If the 1600 cal was a 1000 deficit then you'd expect to lose 2lb of that from the cal deficit alone. Either way congrats.

    I REALLY enjoyed this video because like you, I often walk in my garage, around our car, if the weather or time of day prevents me from doing an outdoor walk. And I was amazed at how fast my miles mounted up. If I was waiting for a load of clothes to finish up and had 10 minutes, I could get a 1000 steps - 100 steps per minute. If I had a few minutes to kill before dinner, I could walk up and down my driveway and get another 200 steps in two minutes. I have worked up to 7-9 miles a day. I get in an hour after dinner and the rest through housework, gardening and incidental walking as described above. At first, the after dinner walk was tough. There were a few hills involved but I stuck with it and now look forward to my evening walk. Plus, it is my time to think and unwind and it is better than any pill aimed at calming you down. I always go at it with the attitude that if I cannot get into this within my first 12 minutes, I will just do that and quit. After 12 minutes, I feel the adrenaline kick in and I usually do my whole hour. Occasionally, I just make it a short walk due to not feeling well or just plain tiredness due to lack of sleep. Give yourself permission to have an off day because you will get them. Admittedly, I am 72 so I am retired with all my children grown. So, my time is my own. But never underestimate a quick 5 minute walk. That is 500 steps! And they accumulate throughout the day without wearing you down. You are the first person who I have listened to that stated they walk inside their house! I almost felt a bit silly at first, but I still saw results. And your body doesn’t know if those steps come from walking inside or outside. It just knows you are moving. You use whatever is available and when it is available. I feel so much more energized. And do not be discouraged by people who try to dismantle your efforts. This often happens. Remember your goal and keep your eyes on the prize!

    I started walking every day a little over three weeks ago. I started with 45 minutes a day for three days and then increased to 10,000 steps a day. I've been at 10,000 steps a day for the last three weeks and have only missed two days. I'm not concerned about how fast I'm going. I think consistency is most important. In the last three weeks I've walked 95 miles.

    Kayla, thank you for your inspiring videos! I am 53 years old and have been very sedentary the last 3 years. I gained a lot of weight and dealing with depression & menopause. Now that spring is here, the sunshine his helping (I always struggle with seasonal depression) AND your videos have been very encouraging to me! I started following you a week or so ago..found you while researching 'intermittent fasting'. Anyhow, in the last week or so I have closed my eating to a 2 hour window..and totally OMAD the last couple days. I'm feeling better but not sure if I've lost weight yet (need to buy a scale) but I was weighed at 182 lbs a couple weeks ago. I started walking about a 1/2 a mile a day last week and now the last 2 days I have walked 2 miles daily. I checked the mileage with my Jeep odometer ( I walk along the road) I don't have a Fitbit. Six miles seems like a far-out goal for me. One mile down the street and back really wears me out. I guess I am really out of shape : (
    I also quit smoking in September of 2018; that's when I decided it's time to get healthy before it's too late! Thank you for sharing your weight loss struggles and achievements. I was just about to give up entirely on ever getting in shape again until I heard about intermittent fasting & came across your videos which gave me motivation and hope.. Thank you!

    Hi Kayla, thanks for the video! It was very interesting. I was also supposed to let you know what I thought of the Fitbit Zip I bought. I absolutley love it! It is extremely motivating for me and I love not having anything on my wrist. It also is very accurate with step counts - no counting arm movements or phantom steps when driving, etc. Now, with that being said, it may have been too motivating. I was overzealous and hurt my foot like the 3rd or 4th day I had it and have been out of commission for almost 2 weeks now 😢

    • @SixMilesToSupper
      @SixMilesToSupper  6 лет назад +1

      When I was losing weight from Jan 2016 - November 2016, I averaged losing about 1.16 pounds a week. In that period of time, getting the last 17 pounds, my weight loss was 1.13/lbs a week on average. I maintained that for about a year. Then after I started this channel I decided I want to lose a bit more, and since that time I've lost right at 13 pounds, from October 2017 until now. So that's around a third of a pound a week on average for that time. I'm now in the normal weight range for my BMI, so I'm happy with that rate of loss.

I'm going to try my best to take this as okay....it's not so bad. some days are just less strict but what is important is the bigger picture of staying consistent with fasting and letting my my mind and body become used to it overtime so it does become easier and second nature. haha trying to calm myself down and not let myself fall of the wagon because of these small things. that's why I like your approach - you think more about the bigger picture and doing things you know you can stick with. anyway I'm rambling a bit here haha so I'll stop here and just say thank you again ! and have a fun rest of the weekend with your family :)

      Yep, focus on the big picture. Work every day on consistency, and don't beat yourself up if you have a misstep. Just work on getting right back on track. Don't get stressed. Think lifetime changes! Good luck on your exams!

      That's keto breath caused by being deep in ketosis. It can smell like fingernail polish remover because your body is releasing acetone. It's perfectly fine but if bothersome there's brushing, mints, gum or trying to add a few more carbs in until it's not bothersome. 😊

    How do I keep motivated to walk the 10 miles a day or maybe 8 miles. I'm starting to lose my grip on it. I've been walking 200 miles a month since December 2014 but lately I'm losing motivation.

    • @SixMilesToSupper

      What helps me is to ask myself why I'm doing it in the first place. For example, walking that much keeps me good and active. I feel great, my joints feel good, I'm in a happy mood after my walk. It's an awesome opportunity to clear my mind. I walk with my husband now, and so that's two hours of talking and spending time together that we get every day. Before my husband started walking with me I looked at it as 2 hours of learning from podcasts. Before that it was 2 hours of free time to binge on Netflix guilt free. The whole time it has reinforced my consistency with intermittent fasting. I still enjoy my 6 miles, so I keep doing it. But if I ever started to resent them, I'd change it immediately!

    What would be an ideal drink post 6 miles walk if you are doing intermittent fasting ...

    • @SixMilesToSupper
      @SixMilesToSupper  3 года назад

      I don't really think in those terms. I just drink what I feel like. If I got hot while walking I generally just drink some ice water. Sometimes I'll have an unsweetened sparkling flavored water like La Croix or unsweetened ice tea.

      That's awesome. It's all about consistency. I do better with consistency when it's something I can do every single day. I'm not the best at remembering what day it is (is it leg day? arm day? off day?) I occasionally get a hankering to lift some heavy weights, or just do some all out sprints, though.

    This is so helpful! But what do you do with your kids when you’re doing all this walking? My kids can still be relatively demanding of my time. 4 of them between ages 5-14.

    • @SixMilesToSupper
      @SixMilesToSupper  6 лет назад +3

      When I first started walking 6 miles a day, my youngest was 4, which is why I started house walking. I just walked in my house, so that I had no excuse not to get them in. When the 4 year old would get clingy, I'd just carry him while I walked. Or give him a piggy back ride. A lot of times I ended up getting all my steps in after they went to bed. Where there's a will, there's a way. I'm also really stubborn. (:

    So you eat one meal a day, probably can’t be more than 1000 calories or less, and walk 400 some calories. No wonder you lost so much weight. Now if I could only eat 600 calories a day 😔
    Not trying to be negative but feel most can’t do that. Most don’t have 2 hours to walk at a slow pace so would have to run to get thy many calories burned and most don’t want to eat 1 meal a day. Just feeling discouraged
