  • In this video, we cover some very basic differences between street and race BMX bikes. This clip is intended for anyone who is new to BMX racing and has limited knowledge of BMX bikes. We don't get all 'technical' in our explanations, we've kept it simple to make it easy for non-BMX people to understand.

      🤣 I have street bike but stripped it down as soon as I got it. Took off the reflectors, stickers and front brake. I just wanted the sturdier construction because I weight 210 and put it through its paces

    I've had street BMX bikes with large front sprockets. This was done for personal preference as I wasn't riding in parks and only grinded on the opposite side so I could get to higher speeds with less effort if I wanted. Granted I was riding in some places where you had to out run security or your friends so any advantage I could get I would take. Looking back I realize I was stupid but I'll say when we had to get out fast I definitely had the advantage from a technical point of view. In all honesty we never got caught or we were left alone so there was no need but it always make sense in my mind. I'll admit I had the biggest disadvantage too though. I never bothered to cut anything down to make it lighter and only removed the brakes for tricks and because they generally didn't work anyway. The levers barely moved without cables. I didn't technically remove the brake either. I just cut the cables on both ends because I intended to put something on there that completely eliminated the problem.

      BMX literally stands for Bicycle Motocross. A BMX is a race bike. Freestyle BMX which is what you’re looking for can be divided into different categories. Flat land, street, park, dirt, and vert. If you’re mostly looking at dirt jumping then a chromoly race bike will work well.

I do recommend checking out maxis tires and maybe some box. However knobbliest won't help you that much and personally I don't like them. (That's my opinion)

      Here in New Zealand, bikes being sold from a shop must have brakes on them (it's the law here). So if a parent walks into a store, they will see all BMX bikes (street and race) with brakes on them. Once the bikes leave the store, the brakes can be (and often are) removed. I aimed this clip at parents, in the hopes that they might be helped with making the right decision. Cheers.

      If you listened, he explained the materials necessary to do tricks and put more stress on the frame vs the materials needed to keep the race BMX bikes light weight. So no you can't convert it, that would be like me thinking I could take a road bike/commuting bike that only goes on city streets and put different forks on it and expect it to hold up on mountain biking trails, it's not going to be ideal or safe for that matter.

    • @thecrazyhobo
      @thecrazyhobo 8 лет назад +2

      +Luis Alberto Ahumada Abrigo.
      I realize this is 6 months late, but the average gearing for race bikes are a 44/16 gearing (assuming you're riding 20" and not 24" cruiser). That is, a 44t front chainring, and a 16t chain drive. As I said, this is only average. Start with it and then figure out what gearing will work best for you.
      Some like a bit lower gearing so they're faster out of the gate. Other may prefer higher gearing so they have a better top speed. The choice really comes down to what makes you comfortable. I prefer the 44/16 gearing on most tracks, but some people like to change it up depending on track conditions, length, difficulty, etc. Do what feels best to you. But 44/16 is a great place to start. Cheers! :D

I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

    I think every BMX biker is looking for the lightest possible, no for speed so much as the ability to control it. Its a lot easier to move around 10 lbs or 20.

      Emanuel Sanchez well technically speaking no. BMX is the name of sport. A bmx bike is a bike of the sport. but who likes bmx Nazis and yes 80s gt's were the best made. but they are still very solid bikes.

    Well fuck, I wanted to buy a street BMX a year ago or something but it turns out it's a race BMX even tho it said "freestyle" on the page. The frame is too long so probably gonna get a street bike from Sundaybikes.com

      Bike stores in New Zealand have to sell bikes with brakes. Up to the riders to remove them if they want.

    Wtf are those knobby tires on the race bike and why the seat so high??

    • @clifffield1
      @clifffield1 5 лет назад

      The race BMX in this clip was loaned to me for the clip. It was set up for an all dirt BMX track that did not have sealed corners (at the time this clip was filmed, it's since been re-developed). So that's why the tyres on the bike were nobbly. The seat was high only as the bike had been transported that way. I had to be very general in this clip to avoid it being hours long, so some shortcuts were taken and some things not adequately explained. Thanks.

    Now, do they make larger ones for MEN instead of just big enough to suit 9 year old boys?

      All i can find thats comfortable are mountain bikes. There are no mountains here. I want something without knobby tires. Its like going to church in soccer cleats.
