I can't thank this video enough not only did you teach me how to correctly adjust via manual settings but you also helped me understand it through this tutorial. I use your tips for every shoot I've ever done and it's helped out so much. Although I no longer use this specific camera anymore the tutorial you provided gives a great basic guidance towards using any camera.
Just want to say I use 2 canon XA10 as a videographer and for the past couple years I have watched this video periodically like 3 or 4 times total and I appreciate it alot. I have had the XA10 since around the time you made this video and as a videographer I am still learning more and more about camera settings and things like that so this video to me is the best video I have watched on the Canon XA10 and I like to watching every now and then to give me a reminder and refresher on it and everytime I watch it I learn something new. Its a very detailed tutorial which I like. Anyway just wanted to say thank you for this video it has helped me out quite a bit the last couple year on learning my cameras more and more
Thank you very much. We use this camera at our (Dutch) newspaper. You're a great teacher, telling so clear in so little time how to work with this gear!
This was great and really helped me a lot. I am having issues getting the video off the camera by internal and with the SD cards do you have a video for that.
@ Willem Arnhem. This tutorial is basically for a large group of students or users who borrow/rent gear. Showing the basics is what this video is all about. Notice that this video is called a tutorial. This can be used for beginners as well as more experienced. With that in mind, this video is relatively well done. Producing tutorials on advanced gear is as much about what not so explain as it is on what to feature.
Brilliant tutorial. Thanks. Just one question. Lots of my audio settings are greyed out even though I am in manual mode. Is there a way to change that?
I congratulate you for your tutorial. I need to know if today's the day of the date ud. I could compare this product vs Sony A6300. Which one would you choose for social video ?. Many thanks. I used the Traslate.
Great tutorial. If you do not have any external microphones but would like to record 2 channels of internal mic sound is this possible? Ideally one set at a lower volume for safety..? Thanks!
Great tutorial...... quick question though...... does the XA10 have a menu grid displaying "safe zones" for framing subjects properly (as opposed to simple rule of 3rds grids)? ( seeing full HD for TV crops 5% of image )
I know this a very old tutorial, and I currently have a Canon Vixia HF S11 Camcorder, while it still works well and I was able to get the boom mic with dead cat made for it, I started looking to upgrade. The XA10 is discontinued but the XA11 is not, I get a used XA10 at almost half the cost of a New XA11, the only difference I see is that the XA10 has built in storage plus SD card slots, while XA11 only uses SD cards to record to. Is there any other differences or advantages / disadvantages between the two. That is if your still monitoring the comments on this video. I really could use a bit of advise here, as my Camcorder only records in AVCHD h.264 format.
ok, i lost all the things that you have on the screen when we moved the camera to a new local. I would really like to see the the time counter and face rec, on the screen, Did pluging in an HDMI cable remove these? thanks
Todd, I replaced our old Sony Camcorder with the Canon XA10. I previously was able to capture live video via svideo, Firewire or RCA on the Sony, I have not figured out how to get the Canon XA10 to do live capture. When I connect the USB and then press the Display button it just gives me the display to choose which source i want to get my video from (Slot A, Slot B or Harddrive). Does the XA10 have this feature, if so, what am I missing?
I have the canon xa10. I am having problems getting my shotgun mic to pick up sound. It plugs into the 3.5 mm jack and I have tried several different mics and cannot get it to pick up any sound. If I plug my apple headphones into the jack they will pick up sound. Any ideas what is or isn’t selected in the menus? I am using a comics shotgun mic at the moment and no sound pickup. Thanks!!!
Here's a question. The camera I have (xa30) and the sitter speed goes from 1/60, to 1/100, to 1/250... suggestion on what shutter speed to use if I'm recording at 60 fps?
Hi Scott, the rule is to double your frame rate. If you're shooting at 60 fps, shutter speed should be at 120. If at 30 fps, shutter should be at 60, and 24 fps should be 48 (or 50 with dslr). Hope that helps!
If 1/120, or 1/125, isn't an option, stick with 100 for movement shots and see what you get. Going higher than 1/125 can give you a crisper picture, but very choppy movement if there is a lot of action. You may have to go back and forth depending on your shooting situation.
When changing the contrast settings... My F-stop only goes down F2.6, the numbers below are greyed out. When I'm selecting the shutter speed I can't choose 1/60 - I have 1/50 or 1/120 Any tips?
+Matthew Gammond If you have not figured this out already you need to be zoomed all the way out. Once you start zooming in the F-Stop starts moving up to 2.8 as the lowest setting.
I need help please NCTV18 or whoever. I have white background and I set the white K to 3400K. What is good set up for white background. I posted my video on youtube but it looks blurry. Could somebody help me?
It all depends on what frame rate you're recording at. If you're recording at 30p (i.e. 30 frames per second) set the shutter speed to 1/60. Likewise, if you're recording at 24p set the shutter speed to 1/50. Basically the shutter speed is set to double the value of the frame rate (or the closest shutter speed that is double the frame rate). This helps to avoid strange lines / patterns running up and down the screen during playback.
Excellent tutorial, but your white balance explanation was a little misleading. Setting K does not guarantee perfect white balance, more valid to do a custom white balance.
Nice tutorial, well done. But the first 15 minutes.. If people don't even know how to set up a tripod and connect the charger, they should not even buy a camera like this. They'd be better of with a point and shoot

TY for your excellent presentation ! SOOOO helpful
Thanks much for putting this together -- WAY easier to follow than the darn Canon user manual.

Wow!!! Zachar so impressed !!!!
Jeff, very good tutorial. Much better than reading the manual. Thanks!
This was great and really helped me a lot. I am having issues getting the video off the camera by internal and with the SD cards do you have a video for that.

I learned some features that i haven't used yet.
Thank you!
Thank you. finally a video that was easy to understand

Very nicely done. How did you get the menu option displayed while you were instructing?
he added it in post. he's waving his arms in front of a blank wall LOL
Thanks! Very useful.
thanks for the turorial. I have a question, can you tell me how to project by HDMI without the details on the screen that I see on the LCD?
Victor en el Menú viene la opción a configurar, es la primera en el menu 3 (de herramienta)
Best tutorial!
Very helpful! Thank you!
Well done! Thank you.
Great job, very helpful!
If looking for a good cam under $1000 that will give dual mic inputs, optic zoom, dual SD ?, good all around cam. Is this the one to go with?
Hey Ben, thank you very much this is really helpful, I have a question. How do I take sound from my mixer to the camera?
Great tutorial, thanks a lot!

Hi ,very usefull information,,can you tell me how to control the volumen on my camara please,,when if film the volumen is not on.

This video came out ages ago, but I was wondering if there is a way to change the aspect ratio on the camera?
There is a way but the camera mainly shoots in the 16:9 ratio to shoot at its utmost quality.
Thanks buddy !
What is "Line" mode for on the handle where Mic and Mic +48 is?
If I use the H4N recorder, what mode should it be in - Line or Mic?

Whenever I go from menu to set headphones I can never go back to video recording mode with audio headphones reset
What time of lava mics were those? Please let me know asap
What tripod are you using on that AX10?

Can you please tell me how I turn off the time and date stamp on my videos. Thank you

ΕΥΓΕ....THANK YOU
do you get paid to do this for canon?
Here's a question. The camera I have (xa30) and the sitter speed goes from 1/60, to 1/100, to 1/250... suggestion on what shutter speed to use if I'm recording at 60 fps?

Larry E. Masters thanks that's helped a lot.
Plz tell me how to click a picture in canon XA10
I need help please NCTV18 or whoever. I have white background and I set the white K to 3400K. What is good set up for white background. I posted my video on youtube but it looks blurry. Could somebody help me?
Hi
Very useful Thanks
My camera isn’t showing me the option for WiFi please help!
My exposure setting won't go to 1/60.. the closest I can get is 1/50. How can I change that?
It all depends on what frame rate you're recording at. If you're recording at 30p (i.e. 30 frames per second) set the shutter speed to 1/60. Likewise, if you're recording at 24p set the shutter speed to 1/50. Basically the shutter speed is set to double the value of the frame rate (or the closest shutter speed that is double the frame rate). This helps to avoid strange lines / patterns running up and down the screen during playback.
If you are using PAL instead of NTSC it will use 1/50 and all multiples of 25
Excellent tutorial, but your white balance explanation was a little misleading. Setting K does not guarantee perfect white balance, more valid to do a custom white balance.
your tutorial is very incomplete. you do not cover the mic on the side nor the connection to a PC/ Disappointing.
Nice tutorial, well done.
But the first 15 minutes.. If people don't even know how to set up a tripod and connect the charger, they should not even buy a camera like this. They'd be better of with a point and shoot
in Hindi language
Thank you
