Thank you for the great tutorial. I just upgraded from an HFG20 to an XA11. I wanted to make more professional videos in my retirement. The camera came with just a basic setup manual, nothing in depth. I downloaded the PDF from the canon support site, but the manual is hard to understand. I have used my HFG20 for almost 10 years so I had some background. Your tutorial was an excellent overview of the camera and I learned a lot. I am 70 years old, retired, but do a lot of video and photo for my retirement community. I have worked as a side kick to pros on different events ranging from weddings down to family videos, and have done a lot of work on my own. Our community theatre has an XA50 which is similar to the XA11 and was so impressed with the features and controls of the camera that I upgraded. Looking forward to providing great memories to people.
How have you found it so far? I’m planning to make the switch from an 80D also but am overwhelmed by the choice. Do you notice any difference in quality?
@@Baldcafe The Canon XA11 has been a great camcorder. The video is very clear and looks professional in true 1080p. By using an XLR mic the quality of the sound is way better than a 3.5mm mic. You have more control over all your settings. The best thing I like is that you are not limited to 30 min and have to start and stop every 30min. The XA11 is a beginning professional camcorder that gives you a professional look to your videos. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to up their game. There are some videos by Gus Decosta who shows all the features of this camcorder. If you type into the search, Outreach on a Mission playlist, you can see the videos I have done for my church. The first few at the bottom are with my 80D, the more recent ones are at the top with the XA11. Hope this helps.
WOW, AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH! FINALLY someone understands and is able to teach/demonstrate the Product which they are putting on RUclips, unlike most others. Gus you are the best.
Hi, great video. I have an XA11 for weddings, but no tutorials about it, looks like no one else uses it. The LPCM gives you a better audio format (2 channel 16 bit LPCM) when using the XLR inputs (imagine it as recording in WAV instead of MP3). Thats what I love about this camera, excellent sound recording at 24 Mbps LPCM 60 p with a Boya PVM-1000.
Hi Gus, I just purchased the xa11. ...I also have the Canon VEXIA R800 which I have outgrown. Love this xa11 Out of all the videos I've watched you are a breath of fresh air..LOL THANK YOU!
thanks. i was trying to set up my canon vixia HF-G50 to do slow mo and your video was the only one to flat out tell you if you did not change your frame rate it would not let you into the slow mo menu, only showed fast motion.
I got the canon hf g 26 (EU) /hf g21 (USA). Unfortunately, there are no detailed reviews or tutorials for the hf g 26/ hf g21. But the menu on the XA11 is the same. Thank you for making things more clear to me.
A couple of quick comments: What you called the speakers are actually the internal microphones, the speaker is under the grip strap on the right side. Dual recording is not available in the highest recording modes (28 Mb).
Gus.. So much thanks for taking the time for these clips! I’ve been shooting DSLR’S for a long time, Just got this jewel in yesterday.. Your tutorials are simply fantastic.. I’m a visual learner and you make everything concise and clear, I’m more than pleased with the quality of this camcorder.. You have a loyal subscriber here!
Hi bro, i can´t have a good definition with this camera, filming myself my skin looks so smooth without definition..what are the best settings to get better image quality? i film in studio with 2 ring lights
I have the Canon xa11 and a issue i have not figured out - videoing inside or in the garage it works well but once i step out into the sunshine the screen gets so white as well as the video it look bad. Can you tell me what setting to change to correct this ??
GUS! Thank you so much! I just bought this camera last week for our livestreams, and to record some stuff for our podcast. I literally logged on so that I could send you a message asking if you'd do some more in depth stuff with this camera. Well...apparently we were on the same wavelength. Thanks for the work you do!
I’m only starting to watch this video. It’s great already! I don’t own this camera but use it a lot for livestream at my church. We do multi camera shoots and use this model on tripod. We use a zoom controller on the one tripod arm. Recently we have started having problems with the auto focus going in and out. I would use manual focus and tried this morning but it didn’t work on the focus ring. The ring only did a zoom function. I think I know the answer to this question but does it sound like it needs to be restarted? Otherwise starting like you are in this video? Thanks so much for your video!
Wow man. Awesome showing of the camera. Mine will be in my hands in 3 days. You basically just showed me how to use the thing without me having to read anything. I'm sure I still will though or I'll just watch this again. Can't wait to see how my videos change. Thanks for this.
Nicely done Gus. I just ordered my camera. Should be here in two days. I thought I'd read some pages in the manual and watch some "setting" video's before it got here. Good job. I have one small suggestion for this specific type of video that you just created. You could probably take the auto focus off, so it doesn't continue to focus on your finger, leaving the menu text somewhat out of focus until you take your hand away again. But otherwise, great job. Exactly the type of video I wanted to see tonight.
HI, excellent; how do you adjust the mini mic volume imput, for the lavaliere? it's not picking up that great of sound, even though it's pinned right under my chin
Hello, how is everything? I have an XA11, and when I record in MP4 the file is split into 16 minute chunks. Is it possible to configure so that recording is not interrupted? Thanks if you can help, and congratulations for the channel.
Good run through. Good detail, thanks. Would you use this camera to do a live stream? And if so, what settings would you put on the video size to help with the upload?
Hi Gus, Thanks for this tour of the XA11! Just got mine and wondering if you have info where to get connector direct from camera to computer (I have 2 - a 12 yr old 15" mac powerbook and new one and would like to download camera onto both. Thanks again - great, well-organized instruction!
This was an amazing overview, thanks so much. I love all the features on this camera but I feel like I can’t get crisp looking videos with it. The color looks a little dull and the videos seem not quite as clear as I was hoping. Any suggestions, I’m am above average user with a little more than a beginners knowledge and experience with videography. Thanks so much!!
Great video!! I have been thinking about doing video for some events I attend but my only concern is the battery running low or completely dying in the middle of recording the event sooo I would definitely NEED to have it plugged into an outlet to prevent that from happening and keep it running.
It seems that I am late to the party. I have two questions. First, if I change my audio setting to have mic 2 mirror mic 1 externally, when I turn off the camera, it reverts back to defaults when I turn it back on. As the camera is hanging about 12 feet off the ground this gets troublesome to redo every time, is there a function to save the settings without having to reload every time? Second, we also use this camera to film video depositions. I cannot for the life of me get the time of day to record on screen. Any suggestions?
Hi Gus ,,, thanks for this brilliant hands on explanation! Excellent down to earth ,honest and intelligent approach. You obviously have a passion for camcorders and this comes across so well! Thanks for your time in creating this video too. Regards Dave!

Can you help me please? I have my new xa 11 just a week ago. I am trying to connct the HDMI cable to my Monitor/TV but nothing happens. I followed the instructions but all in vain!!!1
Hi, I've tried to use the camera connected to the laptop but nothing happens.... Can the camera with the HMDI be used for skype or to display what I'm recording? Thank you!
Hi there, is there any chance you can tell me why my camera (Canon XA11) only propose a recording mode up to 28Mbps (50.00P) instead of the 59.94P as you have on yours and as I saw on all user manual or internet video. Got it in South Africa so is it because it is PAL ?
Thanx for great video. Can you help please. I can't change frame rate when recording in mp4. I'm in manual mode and have looked at all the other settings, frame rate option in the menu is always greyed out. Thanx
Hi, I am trying to remove that all grey box right by the time code on the top. It’s right in the top center. I push the display button and all the other info disappears but not that grey box. Any ideas how to do this?
I’m a bit confused, can you be in manual mode but still have auto exposure? I want to shoot in 24fps but also don’t want to have to worry about exposure. Is this possible?
currently shooting with a jvc 3ccd for broadcasting hockey. but the low light is not all that when zoomed in on fights and stuff. kinda wanting to try this camera
It is possible to use this Canon XA11 -> Avermedia GP310 (Lite) Capture Card -> PC (with OBStudio) to make lives for RUclips? I am facing problems like black screens and "locked screens" when using camera footage on more than 1 scene inside OBStudio. When i make the transition from one scene to another, the problems start to happen. Any idea why or how to fix this? I am using Windows 10 Pro 64 bit with OBStudio version 26 (updated today September 29 / 2020).

Hi Gus - I'm trying to make my background blurry. Any settings you can recommend? This is for an interview shoot and just want the focus to be on my subject.
Unfortunately, the only way to get a blurry background with the XA11 is to have the subject away from the background and move the camera as far back as possible, then zoom into the subject.

Watched this video to get better quality footage. But was mind blown by the manual aperture button at the bottom. A whole new world opened up for me.
I just got my Canon XA11. Lots to learn. I have been using a Canon 80D for all my recordings. Now I can finally switch over to the new camera.
