Glad to see an appreciation for new “traditional” camcorders. Now retired from a career in video production, I sometimes smh at all of the pieces of equipment people have to pack onto their DSLR cameras making them heavy and awkward!! Obviously DSLRs with large sensors and interchangeable lenses have the advantage when shooting stills with great depth of field, but current semi-pro camcorders excel at the convenience of shooting lengthy video indoors and out (built-in neutral density filters!) and recording pro audio, be it via line level from a mixing board, XLR microphones or wireless mics. Thnx much for this review!!

Thanks for the video. I use the "sister" of this camera, the Canon XF400, for demonstrations, quick interviews or press conferences, a super-solid camera that makes the classic (and heavy) TV cameras obsolete. Highly recommended for this type of work.
Thanks for this. Been debating between the XA50 & the XF400. I plan on using for making E-board videos of myself (using a tripod of course) and either of those two camcorders sounds great for what will be run & gun sports videos.
@@stargazer7644 Not necessarily. I have a very expensive Mirrorless SLR which has good video quality, but the autofocus sucks. Both camcorders and DSLRs have pros and cons.

Cool! Vacation near me! And I entered the world of "production" digital video with a Canon Vixia R700 (I did have an SJCAM 4000+ WiFi before that) -- not many of the "Pro" features of the XA50 -- but it also cost a lot less, yet shot great 1080p. And back in the day when my kids were young, I had a tried-and-true Sony 8mm camcorder that lasted for 12 years and had great autofocus -- and was just *easy* to use. As you say -- it's all there. You don't need a camera bag/backback/wheelie-bag with 15 pockets to carry extra lenses, monitors, rigs, gimbals -- etc. It's all there -- and you can add on better mics if needed, and a few extras. But for run-and-gun, or vacations, impromptu "pick-up" video, it is definitely much quicker to get going than a hybrid with all of the extras.... Thanks!
I wrote off camcorders for DSLRs and Mirrorless because they are so 90's and soccer dad. But upon looking at them recently and comparing something like this XA50 to a mirrorless with cage + audio + DSLR monitor + powering all of it + choosing the right video settings... these start to become a compelling solution for people. Especially trying to recommend a video solution to someone that I KNOW doesn't have the level of interest we have in gear, they just want to film the family and occasional outings. Camcorders are definitely starting to have a place for my recommendations to people, which is so weird haha.
I always loved using the Canon XF300 camcorder for weddings which I would rent and my second videographer actually owned. He was full time in video and I was both photo and video. Nice to see an all in one camcorder XA50 with great zoom 4K inch sensor, great battery life, good sound. I am considering this again.
Hey msn do you know if the galaxy note 10 supports the video and audio format this camera records in? Thanks. I edit on my note and I'm not buying it if it doesn't work with my note 10.

100% you should use that camera as your main A Camera in the studio, it's just a tad blown out while recording outside. The textures and sharpness is just so clear for studio use
During the Mini-DV wars, Sony and Canon were going at it neck and neck. I chose Sony and was very reluctant to shoot video with my DSLR camera at first. Love that you have put this back in the mix as they offer some great value for shooting/editing and getting a product that is excellent! Slo- Motion is tackled in post so not a big deal. Thanks for the great review..maybe you can do a Sony comparison in the future?!
So glad to see you flying the flag for actually video cameras. We’ve been trying to bang that drum for a while!! When people complain about canon not offering enough for video I genuinely think they don’t realise they have a whole video & cinema range. The xa50 is a solid voice too!! Great video dude 🙌🙌
Hope you see this. Between the Canon and the Sony NX80? On the fence. I like the wider lens on the Canon but the physical buttons and slow motion on the Sony.
How good is the ZOOM lens on Manual focus? Can you zoom in tight, focus so its sharp and then pull back to a big wide angle shot with the camera remaining in focus through the zoom range and at the end? I know for a fact that the XF400 cannot do this.
okay, this was not the video i meant to send the question to, sorry. I think you spelled it out pretty well, thanks for reading my question, your video was actuallly the only one that explained the handle, so...... thank you, Mike
do you have to have the handle on it? does it have an onboard microphone so i dont have to use the handle, i guess the better question is... do i need to have the handle attached in order to film? or does it have its own microphone? great video by the way thanks for doing it?
I use a Canon vixia hf-s100 as a webcam through a capture card. Does a solid job! Barnacules still uses a Sony FDR-AX53 for his content, looks fantastic.
No clue why RUclipsrs always buy mirrorless camera's aside from the weight. Seems absolutely ridiculous to spend $5k+ on a DSLR and still have straight lines look like jello when you move too quick.
Amazing Videos Everyday Dad!!! I need your advice. I am filming a fan-made Survivor Reality TV show in the forest. You have raved about both this Canon XA50 and the Sony NX80. Which one do you prefer?? We are talking about armatures shooting people running through the bush here not pros in a studio, which is why I'm steering away from DSLR's or mirrorless interchangeable lenses cams. We're talking literal run-and-gun. Also what microphone would you choose for an application like mine? Thanks! Love this channel so much!
but they don't shoot nice LOOKING video... (compared to a mirrorless with a good fast lens) it LOOKS like camcorder footage. is it out of the realm of possibility for SOMEONE to produce a consumer camcorder that can do a bit more shallow dof?
so you are saying you are depending on the equipment to get a poss good video etc instead of going off your skills there is an old saying its not the camera it is the photographer videographer that makes the end product that is the problems with all of the young wannabe's today no skills
I went to the BMPCC4k (completely not practical for youtubers or people wanting to document family vacations...) but that's an image that kills DSLRs and Camcorders alike.
how do i transfer 4K XF-AVC footage from the canon xa50 mxf files to movie studio 17 which won't accept mxf files Ive tried various file converters videoproc ect which converts the video but im hearing no audio after conversion but i am getting video & audio on the camera & canon xf utility any suggestions as to how i can fix the problem?
In all fairness to the stabilization though I was on a bus or walking around holding it up during it. I think it actually worked out pretty well for treating it like it was on a gimbal.
Have the XA40 and adore it for all the reasons you mentioned. If I had a larger budget I'd have gone for the XA50 for its bigger sensor. Thanks for sharing!
photodiox has a cool in line variable ND fliter, not a switch, but fluidly moves into different exposures, great for video, far better than swapping between filters in camera because you donnt have to stop recording/have a filter change mid recording
For a few dollars more, you can get 4k60 and HD120 in addition to everything you like about the xa50, I've been using the XF400 for a couple years now and it's well worth the money
@@ezra8776 It's OK in low light. Wide open is f2.8 with no zoom, f4 with full zoom. It's not the best, though. But you'll be paying much more for a camcorder that is good in low light. Since I do mainly daytime work and corp. video, I either have enough ambient light or can control lighting.
Ronnie Wallin Looks like you’re the guy I need to talk to. I’ve been trying to decide between the XA50 & the XF400. I’m leaning towards the XF400 mainly because of the LCD screen. I really don’t care about 4K so much. The 1080 @ 120fps sounds interesting but I don’t like that the slo-mo in 120 is “baked in” so to speak. I’m a hobbyist that can tolerate going up a couple extra bucks. Been using a gopro on a sabilizer to make videos of myself on a Onewheel and Boosted board. Would like to start setting up up shots on the fly (using a tripod of course), so I figured that the XF or the XA would be great for this kind of run & gun sports work. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. BTW - I have a Canon 5DM4 with a host of nice lenses. But, I don’t want to take chances damaging that gear, not to mention the extra work involved in using a DSLR for my uses.
@@BrokenToeKnee The two are essentially the same camera. The 50 is slightly smaller and weighs a hair less. Personally, I'd rather have the 4k/60 available whether I planned on using or not. Being able to reframe a shot and downsample to 1080 for delivery is worth the difference IMHO. 4k/60 also provides fairly decent slo-mo, if you decide you need it during editing. For me, there's nothing about the xa50 that would make me switch to it over the 400. There's really no reason to rob yourself of the extra functionality over such a minuscule price difference.
@@nsnoesuarez I had it and i believe it didn't worth the price for me. It's a great camera with good autofocus, nice 4k and sLog. But the deal breaker for me was the zoom mechanism (and price) You could get the RX10m2 for less than half the price of RX10m4 and have the constant f/2.8 If you are interested only in video, i would buy the AX700.
@@K.Saniaga thanks for the info, I didn't take time to compare. You're right I'm only I'm planning to use it for video purposes and would take in consideration you're suggestion.
@@rexlibon8908 yes, if it is only for video the AX700 kick ass to RX10m4. You get double SD slot, HLG, better screen, longer battery, better ergonomics and ND filters. The only downside is the longer telephoto on the RX10m4 and wider lens 24mm vs 29mm.
i’m trying to figure out which camcorder is better for first buy an canon xa40, panasonic x1500 or sony ax700 for my videography journey i am avid gh3 user so x1500 seems the most tempting but scared that autofocus is not as good as dual pixel of canon or the one from sony which would you choose or are the 3 nearly the same that i can take either of them? nice video
I'd need your help. I plan to get one camcorder like this, but I don't know it will have an option for recording with depth of field. I believe that I can take a picture with depth of field, but don't know the record will have it option. For example, taking picture, I can have 2.8 F and focus on the object, the other object will be blurred, what about recording? can it have that feature? May you please advise?
Lance G - I considered the G60 as well. The price is right, dual pixel AF, etc. Then, I came across the XA50 with it’s XLR handle. I don’t care much about the XLR, but I like having the handle for run & gun shooting. THEN, I came across the XF400. The 400 has a better & bigger touch screen, dual processors and 4K 60p (which I’ll never use). So, I’m stuck trying to decide.
If you don’t need the grip with the physical controls for audio and the XLR-connectors, I find the Canon Vixia HF G60 the better buy. It is basically the same (OIS, 1 inch-sensor, same zoom lens, DPAF, built-in NDs, Wide Gamma Profile), but only uses 3,5mm in and out, and is cheaper with 1699$.
3” 460,000 dot screen versus 3.5” 1.4million dot screen. Dual processors. 4k60fps and 1080p 120fps (although, admittedly, there’s a catch with the 120).
@@BrokenToeKnee I don‘t really get, what you mean. I just checked the specs, the G60 and XA50 share the same 460.000 dot 3“ display, the Digic DV 6, 4k30 / 4k25 and 1080p60.
@@BrokenToeKnee Ah, you mean the Canon XF400 and GX10. These are actually even better buys. Only slightly heavier, bigger and pricier, but with 4k60 and 1080p120, better display and dual processors. Thanks for hidden advice ;-)
I’ve been looking at the XA50 & the XF400. I’m leaning towards the XF400 because of the screen, mainly. What are your thoughts about the LCD screen on the XA50?
@@BrokenToeKnee the LCD is not as good as a DSLR but that is not a problem for me.. is the final image that matter which is as you see in the video above is crystal clear even at a low light
You are happy with low light results? skin tones are good? Your thoughts on the stabilization? I am used to using a gimbal. I am deciding between this and Sony AX700
@@leotroy9877 Oh yess, I am really satisfied on everything, I mostly use it for the wedding documentaries, recording up to 8 hours per wedding, The stabilizer works perfect but most of the time I Use it on Monopod or tripod, the dynamic range it was a surprise, really good and the auto focus, face tracking etc, touch screen just perfect, it has 3 different color settings, neutral, standard and dynamic range
I love the idea of everything being one package and you raved in the video about the camera but on the test shots I see wobbles and the footage does not look as good as your main camera . You really like it that much even though it doesn’t look that great?
The other advantage of a camcorder is that you sometimes put it in the hands of a newbie to get a shot, way easier to do that than give your DSLR to and say get this shot....A DSLR is fine as long as it is only in your hands.
I use a Sony AX53 for both RUclips and commercial product demo use. The pro being ease of use. This one looks good but want to see what Sony comes up with in the next round of updates.
8:25 - this kind of shot could be dramatically improved by adding a small video light to the top of the camera. With you well lit, it focus the viewer on your face - effectively achieving a separation between you and the background.
Great video thanks for sharing. Can you take a look at the Sony NX30, it's a few years old now but it's a fantastic run and gun camera a used one will be for those on a limited budget. I have 2 and they have been excellent.
On my other channel, i used a Sony 4k ax53 for 2 years, recently got a Sony A6400, other than colors being more accurate on the A6400, for me no real difference in video quality in 4k, in fact shot a 3 videos with both cameras in a talking head style, and the only way i knew what camera, was based on the file name
Hi michael. Im confused if i should get the ax53 or the a6400 as i do long gameplays which is around 4 to 6 hours. I currently have the canon m6 but it stops at 30min recording and i have to press the record button again which is annoying. What do you think is better for shooting long videos?
@@stevekdigitalworx yes it does and this makes it great. Having a bigger sensor feels like its a mini camcorder at a mirrorless camera size. Ax53 is tempting though. Haha
I had lots of issues with Canon XA20 Image Stabilization. When I held it very still the stabilizer would turn off, like it goes into tripod mode, which I turn of and run full manual setting. Do you know if this issue was fixed with the XA50? I tested it on the CF400, XA15 and XA35 and the problem was on all these models? okay, this was not the video i meant to send the question to, sorry. I think you spelled it out pretty well, thanks for reading my question, your video was actuallly the only one that explained the handle, so...... thank you, Mike
I am glad that finally your obsession with blurry background is waning!
Honestly picture from this camcoder is much better than your's primary camera
do you have to have the handle on it? does it have an onboard microphone so i dont have to use the handle, i guess the better question is... do i need to have the handle attached in order to film? or does it have its own microphone? great video by the way thanks for doing it?
I use a Canon vixia hf-s100 as a webcam through a capture card. Does a solid job! Barnacules still uses a Sony FDR-AX53 for his content, looks fantastic.
Oh nice! Yeah we dont talk about camcorders enough and I think I'm going to start featuring them more.
@@TheEverydayDad awesome!
I actually used the Sony AX53 for a bit
Thanks for the great video man, I liked and subscribed.💯
Great explanation but how do you plug in battery pack on the XA15? I'm lost!
If you ever do corporate video, camcorders are great. Less hassle and the client probably doesn't care about your depth of field.
but they don't shoot nice LOOKING video... (compared to a mirrorless with a good fast lens) it LOOKS like camcorder footage. is it out of the realm of possibility for SOMEONE to produce a consumer camcorder that can do a bit more shallow dof?
so you are saying you are depending on the equipment to get a poss good video etc instead of going off your skills
there is an old saying
its not the camera it is the photographer videographer that makes the end product
that is the problems with all of the young wannabe's today no skills
I actually found the "B" cam camcorder footage better looking than his "A" cam which I believe is a Nikon Z6.
@@damiengvideos4337 It seems to be that the Z6 footage was slightly out of focus.
@@gfinnstrom Here take my Vixia HF R800 and get some good 4k footage out of it then.
Want even better footage get a 50mm film camera :-P
Great great video, thanks! Could you do side by side comparison between this and XA40?
Gracias Bro.igual me gustaría ver algo de xa40
I went to the BMPCC4k (completely not practical for youtubers or people wanting to document family vacations...) but that's an image that kills DSLRs and Camcorders alike.
Hey , can you explain why it isn't practical for RUclips or home videos? I was planning in getting one for that purpose. Thanks!
how do i transfer 4K XF-AVC footage from the canon xa50 mxf files to movie studio 17 which won't accept mxf files
Ive tried various file converters videoproc ect which converts the video but im hearing no audio after conversion but i am getting video & audio on the camera & canon xf utility
any suggestions as to how i can fix the problem?
Thanks for the great video. I have to say it looks pretty good minus the stabilization. It looks pretty weak to my eye.
In all fairness to the stabilization though I was on a bus or walking around holding it up during it. I think it actually worked out pretty well for treating it like it was on a gimbal.
Now that's interesting. A dedicated video camera turns out better at video than a dedicated stills camera. Amazing really.
Have the XA40 and adore it for all the reasons you mentioned. If I had a larger budget I'd have gone for the XA50 for its bigger sensor. Thanks for sharing!
the footage coming from that Canon looks great compared to the one filming you from directly in front, in my opinion..
Pictureworld Photography agreed
photodiox has a cool in line variable ND fliter, not a switch, but fluidly moves into different exposures, great for video, far better than swapping between filters in camera because you donnt have to stop recording/have a filter change mid recording
I know this video is a few years old, but do you happen to know or remember if it has a clean HDMI output for live streaming?
Sounds great!!! Looking like gun 👍
For a few dollars more, you can get 4k60 and HD120 in addition to everything you like about the xa50, I've been using the XF400 for a couple years now and it's well worth the money
is it good in low light?
Thanks for the info. I’m with you on liking to have options. And then there’s the LCD screen on the 400. Plus dual digic 6’s.
Just get the Sony RX10IV paired with an old smartphone when blogging and have it all.
I also have the desire to have a RX10IV
@@nsnoesuarez I had it and i believe it didn't worth the price for me.
It's a great camera with good autofocus, nice 4k and sLog. But the deal breaker for me was the zoom mechanism (and price)
You could get the RX10m2 for less than half the price of RX10m4 and have the constant f/2.8
If you are interested only in video, i would buy the AX700.
The only downside is the longer telephoto on the RX10m4 and wider lens 24mm vs 29mm.
i’m trying to figure out which camcorder is better for first buy
an canon xa40, panasonic x1500 or sony ax700 for my videography journey
i am avid gh3 user so x1500 seems the most tempting but scared that autofocus is not as good as dual pixel of canon or the one from sony
which would you choose or are the 3 nearly the same that i can take either of them?
nice video
Canon XA50 versus Sony NX80, which one gives you better control of depth of field? Need to do interviews with blurry background. Cheers
Thanks heaps for this! Do you still attach a mic for outdoor/windy shoots?
Been looking at this to do travel vlogs. Thanks for the review.
Hi thanks for the video. I can’t seem to be able to change the frame rate on the xa50. It’s greyed out. Could you help?
The colors off of the Canon are so much better than your standard setup it's not even funny.
Love my Canon Vixia HF G21 I purchased at launch last year. Will be picking up the cousin to this camera the new HF G60
Sorry! My mistake. I should have proof read my post.
I was comparing the XA50 & the XF400.
Can you use this with OBS?
Can you vlog with this?
Great vid! Have you tried mounting it on a gimbal? :) Maybe that's a good topic for the next episode :)
Camcorder looks way much sharper & better quality image.. i have the XA50 and i love it
I’ve been looking at the XA50 & the XF400.
I agree that final image quality is the most important factor.
Can you please do a video on mounting camcorders on gimbals? Please..
I love the idea of everything being one package and you raved in the video about the camera but on the test shots I see wobbles and the footage does not look as good as your main camera . You really like it that much even though it doesn’t look that great?
Awesome. Wonder how this camera compares to the Canon HF G50 ? Especially controls and the front aperture knob.
I am told the XA50 is the HF G60 with the top handle. The G50 doesn't have the 1 inch CMOS I believe.
Hi. Great Video. Can the Tele-Converter TC-DC588 1.5x be attached to the XA50? Thanks.
Is the XA40 just as powerful? I'm considering that after making do many vidoes with a Osmo Pocket and external audio.
SD card, doesn't it have an internal storage too? Xa10 and xa 35 do , love both of those thinking about xa40,50,55 next.
I wish you had a Canon XA50 vs SONY NX80 comparisson
@@sanghuloom6943 the 6400 as I understand eliminated the 30 minute barrier.
I'm about to buy a new camera, and decided on the Panasonic hc-x2000.
This just got firmware update to include Canon clog and this outputs 1080p HDMI 422 10bit to external recorder.
Will a “Rode” mic fit the preexisting mic holder? Or does it have to sit in the hot shoe position?
This would be the perfect camera for Camera Conspiracies! Someone notify him! 😂😜
All he wants is the perfect camera.
The Camera Guy: lol
He wants a flippy screen on a ladder, hammer, bicycle and everything out there
I'll take one!!!
looks at price: hmmmm ill just stick to my a6400 lol
Comic Hero a6400 is a beast
Hi Everyday Dad, Great stuff you provide. You did a review of Sony NX80 camcorder prior to the cannon xa50. Which camcorder did you like better. I am looking for a camcorder to film birds in 4k, and usually they are at least 100 feet away. Which camcorder would you prefer? Thank you.
One of the things that put me off the GH4 ........ sensor dust, don’t Get that with a camcorder or bridge camera. Great review. 📹🎥📹🎥 The Sony RX10 ticks a lot of the boxes too.
I make content with a camcorder the sony ax53 the battery life is a huge advantage and the build in gimbal
ExploringAndMe agreed! I too have the AX53 - a great camera. For must run and gun situations the camcorder is the best tool.😀
As of today I found out that the XA50 is discontinued by Canon but there are several out there for purchase. I'm considering the XA70 BUT, it doesn't have a remote control option and the XA50 DOES. So, I have to make a decision soon. Got any ideas for me?
I’m all for camcorders and always will be
Me too!
What about the audio? Recommended mic for this camcorder? And how is the stabilization for run and gun shooting?
What is the best camcorder I should buy to film motocross.
What size sensor does it have??? Idk if u said it yet cause I haven't finished the video yet lol!
That's a steep price for an everyday fella, my dude!
