You did what you thought was best at the time. You still managed to give your bathroom a vintage feel which fits the rest of your house. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. 😁😁😁
Everyone makes mistakes in their youth that aren't happy memories years later. It's totally understandable that you did what you thought was right at the time, and besides, what young girl buys a house at that age! You deserve worlds of credit for all that you've accomplished. You have a good eye for just the right collectibles for your new/old bathroom - it's beautiful! Your shower is almost maintenance free - a big plus. Your mint green was also popular in the 60's, and it all looks so fresh and clean. God bless you!! You've done a wonderful job, and I have a very critical eye. 😉
I love that you saved the vanity and hardware. We’re in a very similar situation, pink and blue tile bathroom with no shower. The tub is square and near the door, not in a spot where we could just add a shower head. It’s not functional for humans, but makes a good dog bath!
I grew up in a mint green and brown Formica bathroom. I loved ❤ everything about it and the entire beautiful home, since my late Parents built it by themselves. Unfortunately, I was forced to sale it, after my Father passed away. My siblings didn’t share the same love about it. The new owners tore it down to build a mansion. 💔😭 It will always be one of mine life’s major heartaches. 😔 I have the happy memories to look back upon.
I purchased my first home, a 1960s home, at 21 y.o. My husband and I tore out our bathtub for a remodel and instantly regretted it. Like your tub, it was extremely heavy. We did use it for a time as it was a 'soaker' size and retained heat, and I mistakenly thought all modern tubs were like that. If we could do it over, we would have had it 'refinished,' but we did not know there were businesses out there that refinished the old heavy tubs.
I bought a home when I was 19. I liked vintage but didn’t love it yet. We gutted the blue bathroom and made modern. But my biggest regret was the 40s or 50s kitchen. We took down beautiful wallpaper, removed original lighting, painted beautiful wood cabinets and changed hardware, and worst of all laid granite tile over the original countertops. Looking back I would die for the that home in original condition:( I just didn’t know better and was young and wanted modern style.
Emily, your entire house is adorable. I would’ve ripped out the pink fixtures as well, and I LOVE pink. If it’s stained or broken, it may cost a heck of a lot more to restore it. We had a metal claw foot tub growing up and my Mom replaced it. That for me, was a HUGE mistake. Oh well.
I think you did a great job. Don't worry about what anyone thinks or says. You like it, and that's all that matters. I grew up with a pink and green tiled bathroom. Of course, I didn't appreciate it, then. How could I have known? I wish I had it now, though.
“Put on glasses of understanding”. Oh my gosh - hysterical. I think your devotion to the vintage rescue and revival far outweighs your pink purge. Love, enjoy and embrace. You, like your bathroom, are darling (I love the ledge ☺️).
I feel your pain, pink bathrooms are very hard to put in now, plus they add tens of thousands to the house value as many of us know you can't get them anymore. I did a number of things when I was young and didn't know more about the consequences, wish I could take them back; but what I do is try to save as much from milk-paint and landfills as I can, even if I can't use it I know where to find people who will treasure old things, and maybe someday someone will gift you with a lovely colored bathroom trio and you can have that vintage bathroom ; ) Your channel is always a delight, and I am sure this video will save many pink/blue/green/yellow bathrooms. It was good and brave of you to share your mistake.
Omg thank you so much 😭😭😭 I hope it saves even one person from my mistake!!! I agree, everything kept out of the landfill is a huge win. Keep up the good work!!! 🥳
First if all..why would anyone be rude??? Can't wrap my head around it!!! Had a similar situation...1935 house...bathtub...no shower...no tile or backsplash around tub...also, it was original tub...kept tub, added new plumbing and tile backsplash...it had to be done...it was just a messy, mushy, sad looking bathtub area. Sometimes it is just necessary!!! Oh, and by the way...your new/old bathroom is adorable!!! 🚽🚿🛀🛁💚🏡
I think you did GREAT!!! I love the mint bead board and wonder if you could pick up more of that color in a few places to make the color more purposeful…maybe in a sheet shower curtain (as someone suggested) with some flowers of that color…this will probably be unpopular, but I think the mirrors painted that color could make the whole sink area look like a 50’s bathroom design magazine ad 🤷
Emily, it happens. My parents destroyed a pink and black tile bathroom in my childhood home. At the time, I was happy to see it go because I was embarrassed by how old it was and it compounded the feeling of bring poor and living in a tiny old house. Hindsight, I can appreciate and mourn the beauty of that old bathroom but it just didn't serve at the time. It was hard for my mom to keep clean and I'm pretty sure I remember that the tile was starting to crack in places. You did the best you could with the knowledge and resources you had! Your current bathroom looks cute and functional. Nice job!
Emily. I'm telling you to let go. There are so many lessons we have to learn. I love your choices. Americans are so good at doing thier own work and up cycling. It's honestly so cool how much you upcycle. You are also so lovely. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I would do the same, you have to do what’s best for you and your house. It’s a bummer and to lose the tub to pieces, but I understand. Linoleum is the best!! Eco friendly and doesn’t off gas.
We do what we need to do. I sold my late 60's home to a friend. My kid's Jack & Jill Bathroom was lime green and bright yellow. I asked my friend to allow me to have the fixtures if they redid the bathroom. The lamps were yellow daisy globes! The first thing they renovated, the bathroom! She saved nothing. I could not even bear to visit.
I totally like the replacements and for the reasons you have given. I agree with someone else that said to use that same pink color somewhere in the bathroom...if you ever get tired of the green, I think that woodwork would be adorable in that pink color.
or paint the walls above the beadboard the actual pink that the tub and toilet were...then make curtains and shower curtain out of sheets in the the mint and pink colors.
Aww, I hope you don’t well on it too much!! And it’s not really irreversible entirely. If you really want to one day, you can remodel and bring back the pink. It may not be a conventional project but I believe it can be done.
I was in your old bathroom before you renovated and this is so much better! Just because something is vintage, doesn't mean it's always great - especially when you're talking cracked sinks and old toilets (hooray that you didn't make a planter out of your pink toilet in the back yard - haha!). I absolutely love your renovation - it's fresh and has plenty of vintage vibes! - Love you, Mom
Aww love that your Mom has your back.❤ Honestly I probably would have done the same thing in my very early 20's. Even if you had known what your future style would be it would have cost more to preserve that look then what you could afford at the time. At the age of 20 my greatgrandma gave me her Japanese stoneware dishes with orange and yellow flowers. At the time I thought it was hideous and only used it for a short time until I could afford something new. I didn't think about how I wouldn't have my sweet grandma forever and I never would have known that yellow and orange would evolve into my two most favorite colors to decorate with. Lesson learned.
Emily ! Seriously, who could be upset with you !!! I am a vintage lover too. But I would have done the same thing. Note, I am 66 and have made a lot of mistakes. But that is how we learn and sometimes you have to be practical. It is what it is.....and I LOVE YOUR BATHROOM TODAY💚💚💚💚💚it is perfect!!!! Actually I love your whole house and think you have a sweet personality. Especially love how you honor your grandparent, as I am a grandma to 5❤. Anyway. No pitch forks here😊
Awwww thank you SO much, Linda!!! 🥹💕 You’re the sweetest and I agree, I’ve definitely learned from my mistake but plan on making many more 🤣 Congrats on being a grandma to 5 🥲
Your new bath is charming. But, I’ll have to say the original bath was way cuter!! I get you have to match functionality and design. But ugh can’t believe that pink tub went for the plastic shower. Sucks you could have upgraded the plumbing then done some pink tile and been done!! But maybe you can throw some retro charm back in when you’re ready to upgrade from the plastic!!
I definitely won’t waste my shower surround by replacing it because that’s a whole other waste. But I will keep this lesson in mind for the next home I buy!
Emily, I love your bathroom! I love the mint bead board and the ledge you made and the lazy Susan. I especially like the planter on the lazy Susan for your toothpaste, so cute! In our first house, we too destroyed a white cast iron tub. We had three small children we bathed all the time in it and it was old, scratched and stained so it looked gross and felt unclean for our babes. My dad came over after the fact and just made us feel like crap for destroying it and I felt worse when my friend told me they had theirs painted to look new. Oh well you live and learn. At the time we just wanted something new and clean looking and I didn’t even think of painting it.
Well that’s not cool they made you feel like crap!! Especially with kids I get why you would feel like you need something safer. Plus kids could hit their heads on it and that’s not as forgiving as plastic 🤣
I think you did an amazing job making it functional and cute and adding touches that help it go with the rest of your vintage house! I love that you showed some less expensive ways to make a bathroom cute it feels so real and not sterile and unattainable like some bathroom renos I see! Hi Jamie! I’m so glad you found it inspiring!!! 🥳 90s oak trim and cabinets were in my parents house and they painted it all white. You could always paint a fun color too. I sat with my wood doors, trim, and closets for a long time and once I incorporated vintage pieces the wood look actually grew on me (and maybe it would for you with the right styling). But if you hate wood definitely give it a paint ☺️
@@emilyretro I love the look of white but I don't think I'm ready to commit to painting it all! I have owned this house for 16 years! I'm more looking at ways to keep the wood and have it flow well with the rest of the decor. I also don't like when parts of a house have painted trim and parts have wood - another reason i want to keep the wood! Thanks for all your ideas!
Bathrooms need to be fresh and water resistant. Toilets need to be efficient. If tile is cracked and the backing spongy etc then you can only do so much. Dirty old fixtures sometimes just have to go. You can buy a pink tub again or just paint it all pink sometime. It's cute as it is now.
Just because the tub was pink doesn’t mean it should be saved if it was impractical or in really bad shape. I grew up in an old house and love them and we had a black and white tile bathroom but hated scrubbing the grout around all that tile.
Not everything old is good! I love your current bathroom; it has so much character. Given the number of homes in this country, I am convinced that hundreds of thousands of them probably still have vintage colored bathrooms. You haven't made them extinct! :)
I love your Bathroom! Love the colors! My house was built in the early 60’s! I have a white cast iron tub original to the house! I would really love to have it taken out and have a shower put in! Vintage is always not the best all the time! We had our toilet changed out also and love it! It sits taller so it helps as we age! Lol I think you done the right thing! Love your bathroom!❤️🥰👍
Now you've told the whole story I understand. A vintage bath and sink without the tiles and matching toilet. Make no sense. Ok you could have donated to a shop?? Really, with the weight of that thing? How would you have done that? Pay the plummers more money and transport?? Its not realistic. You kept what was beautiful, the vanity. And the rest was really nothing worth breaking your head over. Forget it let it go, and rest in peace. ❤🕊
I love those mirrors!! I remember those towels years ago. I love pink sink, tub, and toilet but you're right about the toilet it took a lot of water. Your bathroom is still very nice!❤
My mom still has the original pink tile bathroom in her home. It’s adorable! I love what you have done, it’s so cheerful and nostalgic! Also, I’m totally putting a brick in my toilets..I never thought of that but I sure have noticed how much water is wasted. Brilliant! Thanks for the tip. ❤
I am nostalgic for my Grammy’s pink bathroom… she even had pink toilet paper😂 You did great with your reno Emily! I love the vintage towels and all of your treasures too🥰 Also, could everyone please get a pair of “Glasses of Understanding”. 😁
Love your channel and blog. You asked what I would have done. I love the Vintage pink and would probably have kept it. They say hindsight is 20/20 though. Don’t beat yourself up over it, it’s cute. I love the vintage pond jar on display 😊
Hahaha the ponds aren’t vintage they’re new from the store. I use them daily 😂😂😂 But I agree they’re vintage inspired! And so true, hindsight is 20/20 ☺️💕
I like your upgrades. It's much more functional, cleaner, and yet still conveys a vintage vibe. Some things just need to be upgraded. 22 year old Emily was a smart woman. 🙂

I grew up in a mint green and brown Formica bathroom. I loved ❤ everything about it and the entire beautiful home, since my late Parents built it by themselves. Sometimes you have to be practical over nostalgic. I wouldn’t have kept stained things either. And the wall around the tub sounded really gross.
Yeah it definitely was gross. Thank you for understanding 😂💕
So many cute items, and a cheerful color scheme! I love the yellow tackle box. Thanks for sharing the tip about the brick!

I totally agree I feel that way in a kitchen too like a fridge and dishwasher. Thanks for sharing ☺️💕
I love the way it looks now! Even though it’s not the original fixtures it makes a lot of sense why you chose to update them. ❤

Omg we have such a similar house!!! Thanks for sharing how you are/plan to change it! I agree with the taller toilet thing 🤣🤣🤣
You could always paint the walls the same pink to pay homage to the orig bathroom. Would go really cute with the aqua.
That’s a great idea ☺️💕

I actually found the lazy Susan at a goodwill in south haven when I went down there for the day ☺️ It’s a cutie!
@@emilyretro oh I love that goodwill
Love your channel and blog. You asked what I would have done. I love the Vintage pink and would probably have kept it. They say hindsight is 20/20 though. Don’t beat yourself up over it, it’s cute. I love the vintage pond jar on display 😊
Hahaha the ponds aren’t vintage they’re new from the store. I use them daily 😂😂😂 But I agree they’re vintage inspired! And so true, hindsight is 20/20 ☺️💕
@@emilyretro I thought maybe they were new after I had already made the comment lol wasn’t sure how to edit. Still they look cute ;-)
I like your upgrades. It's much more functional, cleaner, and yet still conveys a vintage vibe. Some things just need to be upgraded. 22 year old Emily was a smart woman. 🙂
THANK YOU 🥹🥲😭 you’re so kind 😭😭😭💕
We all have regrets about stuff. Just accept you are human and move on!! It looks great!!
Very true!!! 😂💕
People make way worse decisions as young adults. Please sleep easy about this one💖
Hahahaha so true 🤣🤣🤣
I’m just going to bite my tongue on this one.
