I am a semi-retired pastor with 44 years of experience in public speaking. I'm investigating this field. I have a profile on Upwork, but I haven't actually done any narration. So I'm in research mode. I found your channel and I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. I actually received an invitation to audition for a narration, and that is when I realized I wasn't really ready for it. For one thing, they wanted a southern accent, and I think it was the fact that I was living in North Carolina at the time I created my Upwork profile that caused them to consider me. I am actually a Hoosier (Indiana) native. So I look forward to examining the help section on the acx site to learn and start making samples. Appreciate this video.😊

I have been doing LibriVox as per your recommendation and really enjoying it. My first short story, "A Dangerous Scarecrow," was posted on LibriVox. Would it be best to create an ACX profile once I have more experience or can I start uploading samples as I complete them? I have one for now. I am assuming it takes time to be noticed to do a work for someone.
Awesome, thanks Angela! You are definitely helping many of us. I have moved my "recording studio" to my closet for the next recording. I guess practice makes perfect.
Is it necessary to meet all of the submissions requirements for auditions? I am an experienced audio producer so it is not a problem, just wanting to know if ACX rejects auditions that don't meet the requirements or is that reserved for the actual files produced for the finished product?
I send the auditions formatted per the ACX standards so my audition reflects the final product. I don't think they need to be, but they may have changed that requirement.
Hi. I'm just getting started and have a short story under my belt. With samples, would you say to put up a variety of character voices as well as my own. For instance, I can do a decent British accent. Also doing a variety of read styles?
Hi Angela, thank you so much for this information. I am gathering materials and looking to beginning voice acting. I'm wondering - do you recommend creating a new Amazon account and a new email for your voice over business? And I am wondering if Raven Green Studio is descriptive enough or if I should include voice over/narration/or simply VO. My concern is that I am also and artist and have always used the word "studio" for my art and art pages and want to avoid confusion. Should I just have multiple emails and names for each business? Apologies if this is a silly question!
Welcome to the VO family! You could also try Raven Green Productions, Media or Recording Studio. For Amazon, you can use either your existing credentials or create a new business profile. I would definitely recommend a separate email address for business though.
This isn't your question, but my advice would be to pick ONE creative market as a business and the others leave as hobbies for fun. Jack of all creative trades is a tough business to sell. You can do so many things well or better than others, but what are you best at that you would be well suited to compete with other creatives in that field? Do that!
You mentioned if I want to be an author AND narrator for others I’ll need another profile do I actually need to create separate amazon accounts because thats what it looks like is going to happen
When you sign up, they give you a few different options for profiles, but they don't overlap, unfortunately. But, ACX is only one platform, there are many other ways to find audiobook work.
Thank you so much for your videos! I do have a quick question. When registering, it asked if I have valid tax ID number. Is this something I need to also register for or is my Social security number valid?
If you own the rights to that book, and you've had the audiobook re-recorded, you should contact ACX to ask how that process works. I'm not sure how to do that on the authors end.
If you have an accent other than a neutral North American accent? Yes, you can. If you live outside of America, ACX is available in a few other countries as well. Please double-check with ACX for availability in your country if outside the US.
When you sign up with ACX, you give them the bank account information to the account you would like the payments to be deposited to, or choose to have a check mailed.
Hey angela! quick question if you have the time. i am more than ready for this now. ive been practicing. i just want to know if i have to be certified in anything to get accepted for a book naration. because i have no experience in doing this for other people but i want to give it a try. im worried that that they wont give me a chance because i am not certified with a certain degree. thank you
Hi! No, you do not need any certification. The only proof of your ability to narrate books will be in your samples and your final works. :) It definitely helps to have training but there is no proof needed. Thanks for watching!
Narrator/ producer are the same profile. As long as you're not signed up as an author or rights holder, you should be fine. Narrator and producer are used interchangeably on ACX.
I have personally done this. In my mind, I am not selling it, or claiming it as my own or anything like that. I am merely narrating a very small sample of their prose to demonstrate my narration ability.
Great question and not at all silly! Not all authors prefer different character voices, it is important to discuss this with your Rights Holder/ Author before you start.
@@VoiceOverAngela but it's a good idea to have some different voices right? I just did a short SciFi story for LibriVox that had some little girl's voices which there was no way I could duplicate them! So I tried to just use inflections from the words to get the point across. Was that ok?
Acx uses narrator and producer almost interchangeably. Some narrators will outsource the editing and formatting to a producer, but most will be both the narrator and handle the production end as well. So, if you want to narrate audiobooks, you will be a narrator/ producer.
@@VoiceOverAngela Thanks for the response. I chose Producer when setting up my account but now it looks like I will have to setup another account to be able to audition for work, unless I am missing something.
@@VoiceOverAngela LOL Seriously, it's that simple? Thank you so much, I obviously have to watch more of your videos. Thanks for the replies, especially on a 2-year old video. 😁
on ACX a Producer is a Narrator/Producer. I do both, I narrate and I produce the audio. There are only two categories, Producer/Narrator and Rights Holder/ Author.

@@VoiceOverAngela Ok, got it thank you. I was reading the check list and that word appeared and I needed to know.
hey, so I want to narrate and consequently chose "narrator" for my profile instead of producer, how do I change this?
For narrators, narrator and producer are interchangeable, one and the same.
@@VoiceOverAngela thank you!
Thank you, I am algerien student and i want to start voiceover job.
How can I go back and change my profile from "Narrator" to "Producer?"
Narrator/ producer are the same profile. As long as you're not signed up as an author or rights holder, you should be fine. Narrator and producer are used interchangeably on ACX.
@@VoiceOverAngela Thank you!!
👍👍
Is it considered ethical to submit samples of books you have recorded without permission from the rights holder or books you have not fully recorded?
I have personally done this. In my mind, I am not selling it, or claiming it as my own or anything like that. I am merely narrating a very small sample of their prose to demonstrate my narration ability.
@@VoiceOverAngela do you slate your samples with either your name, the source of the narration, or both?
This might be a silly question, but do all fiction audiobook narrations use different character voices?
Great question and not at all silly! Not all authors prefer different character voices, it is important to discuss this with your Rights Holder/ Author before you start.
@@VoiceOverAngela but it's a good idea to have some different voices right? I just did a short SciFi story for LibriVox that had some little girl's voices which there was no way I could duplicate them! So I tried to just use inflections from the words to get the point across. Was that ok?
@@jamproductions5329 oh sure, changing pace, cadence or accent can help differentiate characters too
So, if I want to narrate books I am not a narrator but a publisher?
Acx uses narrator and producer almost interchangeably. Some narrators will outsource the editing and formatting to a producer, but most will be both the narrator and handle the production end as well. So, if you want to narrate audiobooks, you will be a narrator/ producer.
@@VoiceOverAngela Thanks for the response. I chose Producer when setting up my account but now it looks like I will have to setup another account to be able to audition for work, unless I am missing something.
@@mikehillproject on your dashboard, click search available titles to choose a book to audition for.
@@VoiceOverAngela LOL Seriously, it's that simple? Thank you so much, I obviously have to watch more of your videos. Thanks for the replies, especially on a 2-year old video. 😁
@@mikehillproject I'm still here! Lol. My pleasure.
What is ACX?
ACX is an arm of Amazon where narrators and authors find each other to produce audiobooks for Audible. :)
Why are you using a Producer account as an example, instead of Narrator/Actor?
on ACX a Producer is a Narrator/Producer. I do both, I narrate and I produce the audio. There are only two categories, Producer/Narrator and Rights Holder/ Author.
@@VoiceOverAngela oh ok. I didn't realize they were the same. Thank you.
Really enjoying your videos. Would you be able to start linking your references and anything you mention in the text below your video. It would really help.
That is a great idea, I don't know why I never thought of that before.... that's why I ask you guys for help! :)
31/5/2022 So crazy to think this was only 16 months ago & you weren't even at 1000 subs then, you're currently showing 11.2K :-)
So crazy and humbling....
