Coming back to voiceovers after many years and had convinced myself that my NT-1A wasn't good enough for VOs, so really pleased to find this video tonight! Thank you
Thank you so much for this video! I want to record audiobooks for my students to use and this has simplified the process! Now I know how to do it in an affordable way and what to look for!
Thank you for such a helpful video! I’m new to all of this. I’ve been using my USB Apogee Hypemic, with my iPad Pro, and I use the MetaRecorder app to record audio. It’s an easy setup, I bring it into my closet that I treated with moving blankets… but I’m wondering now If I need to get an XLR microphone and an interface….but can I use that with my ipad? Will that work with the ipad just as well as it does with a computer? Otherwise I’d be using the desktop Mac in the office, and I’d have to do a new setup for sound treatment in there…it’s hardwood floor and windows… :(
Thank you so much for making this video, I really appreciate it! 🥰🥰💖💖 I just have one simple question about a mic:-can I use only a headset microphone to narrate audiobooks? ❤
I am so glad you showed the set up I am looking at, the Scarlett 4th Gen. I am just starting my journey and am super stoked to make my first demo even if it is just a practice one lol. FYI I do not miss those summers in the valley. Moved from Mesa to Colorado
I have a question and im sure you have already made a video about this I just haven't found it yet but how would you recommend setting up a recording space so it reduces most if not all the ambient noises
Appreciate the information, and that you mentioned even some of the "little" things to consider, like the connecting wires, and the computer fans. Great voice, btw, I'm guessing you're pretty successful.
I am glad I have watched these videos. Not going to work for me since I am unemployed and would need to spend on recording equipment. I will stick to doing my RUclips videos on Chemistry. I use Zoom with a Boya microphone. I did a test on Audacity with microphone and did not turn out like my RUclips videos. Will look into a different side hustle, not sure what at this point. Good thing I did not lose too much time on this. Thanks for your videos.
So glad you’re addressing this question. I’ve wanted to do this since a few days before Covid hit in 2020 and really need help with the studio/equipment side.
I love your videos. One question you never really cover is how to setup the text on your computer so you can read it easily. I've been reading holding a book in my hands and read best with the sun on the text, but this is obviously not optimum. I have a pc and use audacity to record the audio from my yeti microphone. The best sound comes from being close up to the microphone. I've heard we are not supposed to hold the book because the microphone will pick up the sound of the page turning. Would love to see what you're reading from.
I use my monitor to read from, but you can use a tablet or some other form of digital device. Also, be careful with being less than a few inches from your microphone, you may pick up plosives or burn the audio when you speak loudly. It's best to be around 4-6 inches from your mic.
I’m just getting started and want to just practice, so if I have a computer and get a microphone where do I record to , to just practice and listen to how I sound and if the mic is picking up noises in the environment?
I have not used Beats Solo, but I do use studio headphones. You want to be able to hear your true playback clearly, so you can be sure you sound your best before you send your files to a client.
Angela, I just got my first project through ACX. First-time narrator Before this, I was in vocal music I already own: Shure SM58 dynamic condensor XLR mic Popfilter Isolation ball Shockmount Mic stand with boom arm Isolation shield IRig Pro Duo interface Laptop PC with Audacity and ACX plugin and large monitor to read material My biggest issue is sound proofing. I have a designated recording space that I have tried to soundproof, because reverb is a huge problem. Am I good to go? I'm really nervous about this. My auditions have all met ACX standards. Should I record in Audacity, or can I just use the voice recorder app on my computer and upload the files to Audacity?
Good start for gear! You're best bet is to treat the room around you with soft surfaces, acoustic foam or hang blankets etc. Also note the floor, ceiling and desk top in front of you. That should help reduce reverb. You got this!
@@VoiceOverAngela I was able to purchase a mini vocal booth (3D foam isolation box) on Amazon as well as soundproof moving blankets. Thanks so much for your help! The isolation shields I use for music just aren’t cutting it. Also, it’s a dynamic mic, I accidentally said condenser before - I’m sure you’re familiar with the Shure SM58-it’s so popular! I’m scared to get a condenser mic as I have only used them in professional settings. Are you they worth buying for home recording?
@MustangLeaf2010 condenser mics are more sensitive, have lower self noise and sound more natural at different frequencies. My mic is a super cardioid condenser shotgun mic.
Hey Angela. I'm just starting out on my VO journey and have been watching your videos which have been very helpful thus far! For equipment, do you have any thoughts/feedback on using a porta booth? I have very limited space for a studio and wanted to see if you've ever heard anything about them. Additionally rn I only have a Chromebook. Is that sufficient for recording? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Hi! I live in AZ so it's hot most of the year. I record when the AC is off and edit while it's on. I also have a fan in my studio that I also use while editing. I don't have a way to keep the fan quiet, unfortunately. I just record in short bursts, at night out early in the morning when it's not as hot.
I really love your videos. HI I am just starting out. I have a really bright and sharp voice, do I need to consider that my voice isnt as deep and soothing as other vo artists when I am picking a mic and pop screen?
Hi! One more question. Should I also be using headphones when I record on Audacity as well? I was interested in the AKG K 240 MK II Stereo Studio Headphones? I have a USB mic. Thanks again for your advice!
Hi! Wearing headphones while recording is an individual preference. Some only wear them while editing, some wear one off the ear while recording to listen to what is being recorded. Personally, I don't like wearing headphones while recording, it makes me feel restricted... AKGs are great cans, I use them myself, and I've had them since 2018.
@@VoiceOverAngela thank you so much. I don’t care for those big headphones because they give me a headache if I have them on for long periods of time. So helpful!
I just need audio equipment ( the kid at walmart said the blue yeti would do...should have listened lol), but on the bright side I decided to buy the computer first so I went top dollar (or close) with Dell Optiplex 3050 with an i5 cpu processor and 16g of ram and harddrive. In regards to the fan noise, I've had some purple suggest replacing the fan with one that was silent? I'm not sure if there is such a thing? I would definitely not recommend using your phone for audiobooks. I would invest in training, equipment, software, and time to do well in this industry.
@VoiceOverAngela you know, the higher quality phones have excellent recording features that sound as good as studio mics. Samsung S22 Ultra and up, iPhone 14 Pro Maxx and up...and a few other high end devices. Marques Brownlee demonstrates this. I'm only asking if there are any Android or IOS options.
@deucedaprodeuca very true. However, I was not referring to the microphone as much as your ability to record, master and edit with the phone software. The mic does play into this and a phone's mic, however good, could never match the sensitivity of a broadcast quality mic.
@VoiceOverAngela What I'm saying is, I love what you do and I repsect you, but you're wrong. Phone mics and software can rival many studio mics and definitely rival the cheap mics that I see people using to do voiceovers. I'm saying, the top tech RUclipsr in the world has done the comparison. He shot an entire video series and compared it to professional cameras and mics, then at the end of the series, he asked people what they thought about the audi/video quality, did a direct comparison to a professional setup, and most people thought the phone was the professional setup, that includes audio and video. Get with the times. I'm not talking about phones you buy at airports and grocery stores.
@@deucedaprodeuca I fully understand what you're saying, and thank you for the love. You asked about phone recording options, my opinion is this: I own the latest model Samsung phone, but as a voice actor, I would never use it for professional voice over or audiobooks, nor would I recommend it.
As a blind person, I would like to start doing audio narration in the future. However, my computer has a screen reader that talks. Could you please give me some suggestions about how to reduce talking from the screen reader, when I try to record an audiobook?
If there was a way to direct the screen reader to an earbud or headphones, that may work. So your voice is the only one picked up by the microphone. :)
Hi, I have a USB microphone called the FIFINE USB Podcast Microphone. Since it is a USB mic, would I still need cables or are those only recommended for XLR microphones and an interface? Thank you so much for the great video.

I got a special edition Johhny Rico POP from Starship Troopers. The moment after he jumps on the back of the big bug and blows it up and then jumps down just to smile and get covered in orange alien goo. The bow even has these cool orange splatters like it was there to witness it or something....is that the chattering man in the very back? Him and that Pennywise came out on Halloween a couple years ago..I had them all at one point. If I can get my channel rolling in the future, I will start collecting again. Hey Angela 🤗 Hope you’re well! I have a question. I’m just starting out and I’ve set up my recording space inside my closet, do you recommend anything to put up on the walls to help with room noise for instance I see that you have like a blanket type hanging in your space ? Thank you for your time!
Hi! Thanks for watching and welcome to the VO family :) You can repurpose moving blankets (as I have) to pad the wall surfaces. You can also find blankets at a second hand or thrift store to pad the walls. Thick towels work too. Or you can purchase acoustic foam or padding to line the walls as well.

Another excellent video Angela. Your channel just keeps getting better and the video production is great. Thanks for the good info in this one. Do you have any experience with the ElectroVoice RE20? have you ever used it? I love my RODE NT1 but I don't have a whisper room or anything comparable. Thanks!
Hi! Thank you so much for the kind words, I do try to improve and learn as I go ... lol. I have not personally used this mic, but I do know of a few VOs who use this mic and absolutely love it. I can't really say whether it is good for helping in a noisy room, but I do know that a shotgun mic is great for a noisy room. This is the main reason I chose the Sennheiser 416 for my noisy room.
Hi Angela, I’m a nurse and this sounds like something I would be interested in doing for extra income. Do you think it’s possible to get into acx without any acting background or anything similar? I really have zero background, and how much at disadvantage does that put me on when it comes to being hired?
hi angela! i have a macbook pro. with that, do you think there's a way around recording an audiobook/audition with a laptop as such that has the fan making noise? or would i just have to invest into a macbook air/desktop? =/
Hello again, Angela :) So I am signing up with ACX as a narrator soon and I am wondering what "with AFTRA H&R" is all about ? Looks to be SAG options with ACX. Any experience with this?
Oh yeah, that should be enough for Voice over. If you decide to get into heavy video editing or any serious multitasking you may need more, but 16gb should be sufficient for just voice over. :)
If you’re only doing audio, you’d be more than fine with just 4gb of RAM. Angela’s advice about getting the most you can afford is spot on though especially if you plan on taking on larger projects. In todays age though, you’d be hard pressed to find a reputable prebuilt PC with only 4gb, especially if it has a more beefier cpu like an i5. A lot more goes into a well running PC than just its physical components though. I’m assuming your PC is running Windows. Do a RUclips search for “Optimizing Windows for Audio Production”. You’ll probably come across more videos pertaining to recording music/instruments but the PC optimization is the same regardless of what you’re recording. The DAW (digital audio workstation) you decide to use can also have a taxing affect on your PC’s resources. I like to use Reaper. For voice recording, it is ALL you need. It comes with an indefinite “free” trial but only costs a one time $60 price for a personal license. Reaper is a fully functioning DAW with nothing behind a paywall (besides a license, which you should purchase anyways if you make money using it but is not required to fully use the program) and with only recording vocals, your PC hardly even knows the program is running. I’m not affiliated with Reaper but I advocate it’s use for beginners because of its cost and functionality. The cost of other DAW’s are extremely off putting to new comers and a lot of their features are behind a paywall of some kind. It’s extremely easy to set up a single mic application in Reaper.
Great video. One recommendation if I may have is to start the video with your channel name instead of "welcome to my {channel}" Better to name it for branding purposes. Kindly, LT.
Love your videos! I finally dove in and got some equipment and finished my starter "sound cave" as I'm calling it 😆 But I'm curious, how should I set up my profiles and applications for the different sites when I'm a total beginner? How do I sound respectable when I have zero experience narrating audio books? Or how could I get experience before auditioning on these sites?
hello. excellent video. for some reason, it sound like tire mic is far from off.. even worn you on speaker and audio all the way up it's as lthough you're talking from the next room in decibels-- hard to hear. The bow even has these cool orange splatters like it was there to witness it or something....is that the chattering man in the very back? Him and that Pennywise came out on Halloween a couple years ago..I had them all at one point. If I can get my channel rolling in the future, I will start collecting again. Also kept all of my Android 18 pops and statues...shes a badass 😈😎😇
Box not Bow...sorry my auto correct hasnt graduated 4th grade yet lol 😈😎😇
I would love to find that Johnny Rico POP, I loved Starship Troopers. Visible on screen is Pennywise, David from Lost Boys and Daryl from The Walking Dead. :)
@@VoiceOverAngela Ah, I thought David (thats my name, and I'm blonde lol) was the chattering man. Ya, the Johnny Rico pop is siiiiiiiccccckkkk lol, just couldn't part with it and hope I can start collecting again in the future (sold just under 200 pops to help with my moms bills and mine at the time, although I'm more financially stable now,, I'm still considering college because I never used my Pell Grant and qualified...so since I turned 37 on 9/15/21 I'm trying to go after all my passions, including writing and voice acting 😈😎😇
Hey Angela 🤗
Hope you’re well!
@@VoiceOverAngela thank you for the quick response! I did not get the “suicide” part though? And I’ll def look into some foam padding potentially
@@andreaaguilera oh my gosh, autocorrect changed welcome to "suicide" how did that even come close? Gah, I'll edit and fix that now if I can... sorry about that....🤦♀️
@@VoiceOverAngela OH my gosh! I was like wait what just happened! No need to worry! Auto correct can be annoying sometimes!
@@andreaaguilera thanks for the understanding, I use the swipe feature for typing on my phone and it comes up with super weird words sometimes.... note to self: ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE SENDING. 😆
What is the average investment cost for all of the equipment you need?
Depends on what you already have. Expect to pay a couple hundred at least, although if you can find these second hand to start, it may be less.
What do you call the name of voice recorder app
Hi Angela, I’m a nurse and this sounds like something I would be interested in doing for extra income. Do you think it’s possible to get into acx without any acting background or anything similar? I really have zero background, and how much at disadvantage does that put me on when it comes to being hired?
What do you use to add background music while you are reading?
I always add the music after the narration is done and edited. It's easier to control that way.
Can audio recorded on iPhone get approved?
I would doubt it, I wouldn't recommend using your phone to record an audiobook.
hi angela! i have a macbook pro. with that, do you think there's a way around recording an audiobook/audition with a laptop as such that has the fan making noise? or would i just have to invest into a macbook air/desktop? =/
You can work with an external monitor, keyboard And mouse and move the laptop itself away from the mic. :)
@@VoiceOverAngela haha, thanks!
Hello again, Angela :) So I am signing up with ACX as a narrator soon and I am wondering what "with AFTRA H&R" is all about ? Looks to be SAG options with ACX. Any experience with this?
Not really, I am non-union. If you are also non- union, do not select any union options. :)
Do you see that union narration offerings are appearing more and more on ACX or not really?
@@stihlsawrepairs7955 no, not really. They've always been there but I don't see a change in frequency of availability.
Wonderful to know, Angela, and thanks again for insight. Lamont, Portland Oregon
so is 16g good enough? I got it with an i5 cpu processor 😈😎😇
Oh yeah, that should be enough for Voice over. If you decide to get into heavy video editing or any serious multitasking you may need more, but 16gb should be sufficient for just voice over. :)
@@VoiceOverAngela thanks 😈😎😇
One recommendation if I may have is to start the video with your channel name instead of "welcome to my {channel}"
Better to name it for branding purposes.
Kindly, LT.
Thanks for the idea, I figured that it was visible underneath the video and in a few other places, but it doesn't hurt to mention it more. 😉
Have you thought about the rodecaster?
I've heard some good things about that, I'd try it :)
@@VoiceOverAngela I'm wondering if it is better than motu m2
So Subbed you, thanks 😈😎😇
Thank you!
I will put in my head phones And see if it's easier to hear. don't get a " loud enough to hear ( straining to make-up the words) worth my phone on the desk right in front of me. that doesn't happen on youtube much anymore. however, I can tell that the quality of your voice is crisp and rounded good tones!! just the loudness makes it so hard to hear and thus dismaying, as the conntent is excellent!!!!!!!!! and quality of sound excellent!!!! the loudness; can hardly hear💜💜💜💖💜💜
Interesting.... thanks for your comment! I went to listen to this video and it sounds the same volume as the others on my end. I'm not sure why it's so quiet for you, but thank you for the heads up!
@@VoiceOverAngela You're welcome! Amazing. (Do you have Patreon?) (And... sorry for all the prior post 'Swype' errors!)
