Was Johnny Sack Really Going To Whack Tony? | The Sopranos Explained

  • In season 5 of The Sopranos, Tony Soprano is in a pickle when his cousin Tony Blundetto is wanted by the New York Lupertazzi family, in particular Phil Leotardo, for taking out one of their members.
    Not wanting to give him up for torture, Tony instead takes Tony B out himself and tells Johnny Sack where Tony B is.
    This doesn't solve the problem though, and Johnny Sack phones up Tony telling him Phil is angry, and John wants to set up a meeting in New York. But Tony says, "no offence, John, but I got an IQ of 136. It’s been tested." John is silent, Tony waits, and then Johnny says “Alright, tomorrow morning then my house 6:30”, but when Tony is hesitant he says “You think I’m gonna give you armatz with Ginny upstairs?”, and then reiterates that Tony should come alone, as he will be too.
    So what happened here? Was Johnny Sack setting up a hit? Was Johnny really going to kill Tony if he turned up to the original meeting in season 5? Let's discuss.

      Tony getting whacked in NYC, 100% a legitimate concern. At that point in the war, there was enough tension for everyone to be concerned.
      When they had that sit down at the Lupertazzi hangout, The Averna Social Club, threats were being made on Christopher, in front of everyone.
      Johnny already made arrangements with Tony to whack Carmine. Then, Carmine gave Tony the OK, to whack Johnny. (or was it the other way around)
      Either way, it was implied that NY was ready for some major shakeup, while the battle rages on.
      Curiously, Melfi continued to treat Tony, despite all the news going down during the conflict. Jennifer had already warned Tony of her obligation to call authorities if people were to get hurt, during that earlier war between Junior and Tony, several seasons before.

    Johnny had whacking Tony on his back burner for a while. When he moved to NJ, he said he wasn’t going to stick his beak in, and immediately started sticking his beak in with Ralph at first, then Paulie. He had designs on taking that territory for himself. He wasn’t a natural busybody. He was always rational and pragmatic. He had a plan when he started cozying up to Tony’s underlings.

    I never noticed Tony kept his hand in his pocket the whole time, and I’ve watched the show through 4 or 5 times! Makes sense though. Tony didn’t walk around strapped all the time because he didn’t need to and it would be an unnecessary risk to carry an unlicensed firearm, but he made sure to have an unregistered handgun on him when he went to meet Johnny and as you pointed out, kept it close at hand

He had no choice but to come alone and try to make peace with New York, but he had the good sense to bring a little plan b with him

    There was scene where Phil sees Tony at Artie's restaurant, I think, and relays thanks from John in prison, about handling the "Russ" situation. Tony denies knowing anything about it. Phil opens his jacket, to show he isn't wired, but also communicates that he understands the current situation, and being extra paranoid and careful. I think Johnny understood the same from the phone call with Tony and offered his home as a good faith gesture. The Feds busting John during that scene was just another sign that no one was safe, anywhere. And Tony was right to be paranoid and trust no one.

    I believe if the Sac-Man had not been indicted and had not contracted cancer, he would have whacked Tony somewhere down the line. Sac was playing a waiting game, he had Paulie as his inside guy and once he had a capo or two in his pocket and was confident they could take over the rackets in NJ, Sac would have whacked Tony and made Patsy or some other amiable capo boss. Either way, Tony's days were numbered after that animal Blundetto went off the rez. NY likely figured if Tony did not directly sanction Blundetto's actions, then he was unable to control his own family and therefore both a liability and a bad boss in general.

    I think is John wanting to talk to Tony in a dignified manner, but from a position of strength, on "neutral" enough ground that two bosses could talk without Capos or right hand men since we saw how that went last time when John has to put on a show and make threats for his underlings.
    The two can't just meet anymore, and since Tony doesn't trust John and John comes on too strong, maybe it is John realized that Tony has every reason to think he's walking into a trap and has to convince him that he is sincere. Masterful acting.

    Speaking of Phill, could you do a video on how many years he served in prison? I know there is only slight speculation as to how many years, but I have a feeling that there are some key details that I, and all Sopranos fans may have missed.

    I think that Johnny Sac would have made good on his agreement if Tony went through on the Carmine Sr. hit. Even in an inter-family war, Johnny Sac would have come out ahead either way, so why not make the move? It always seemed to me like that was the mistake which led to all the other mistakes that led to the S6 War with NY.

    killing isnt taboo to them, theres no reason for johnny to react with surprise. it's a professional tool for them both, so it's not a big deal to bring it up as a possibility tony would prefer to minimize.

    These videos are SO GOOD. Every single time.
    136 IQ isn’t “genius;” it’s 140. That’s an oversimplification as many scientific communities still argue over how many types of intelligence there are and how to best measure them.
    The way to calculate IQ (mental age divided by chronological age) means by default your IQ gets lower every year on your birthday.
    Which simply illustrates its an inexact science.
    136 is pretty high tho, considering the “average” American is at 100, so a large portion of Americans are below 100 IQ. Which isn’t too bright.
    Marilyn Vos Savant holds the Guinness World Record for highest IQ ever tested.

    I'm personally in the camp that John would've allowed Phil to kill Tony. Not because he hates Tony or that there's an inherent advantage to get rid of him, but this is Johnny right when he's considered to be at his worst. At this point he's insanely paranoid, trigger happy, and full of bloodlust. It wouldn't surprise me if his first response to a problem now is just to kill it, and that's how he viewed Tony.

    The reference to 136 in IQ is that Tony B had that score in catholic school. Something that Tony S pulled as a way of saying "How gullible do you think I am?" and Johnny Sack quickly came up with a better option, that Tony would agree too.
    But then again, you see numerous examples in this show of how Tony and Johnny and other characters go from advanced plans of whacking to cancelling the plans in the blink of an eye, such as the aborted Carmine Sr.-hit.
    So I think that the quick conversation between Johnny and Tony is a power struggle, as is many other conversations, and the outcome could have been either way in the end.

    • @NotQuiteFirst
      @NotQuiteFirst Год назад +2

      Tony B's IQ was much higher, something like 157 which is basically genius territory. 136 is a normal intelligent person like a doctor or engineer (or waste management consultant).

    • @intelligencelimited2708
      @intelligencelimited2708 Год назад +2

      @@NotQuiteFirst The IQ for Blundetto was stated as 136, where you get the 157 figure from, I don't know. Anything above 120 is in the lower reaches of high intelligence. 136 is not 'a normal intelligent person', it's way above the average range.. Tony S is only slightly above average intelligence, and his academic record is unexceptional (Ok that doesn't mean everything, but..) Most of his supposed wisdom is simply parroting the intellectuals in his orbit, like Melfi. With Chase, the mangling of language and malapropisms (Tony S, Little Carmine) tends to indicate the character is a bit of an idiot.

    • @NotQuiteFirst
      @NotQuiteFirst Год назад +3

      @@intelligencelimited2708 I got 157 from the scene in which Tony talks about Blundetto's IQ.
      I didn't mean it's normal to have an IQ of 136, I meant a "normal" intelligent person as opposed to a genius level intelligent person.
      Edit: I just looked up the scene, Blundetto actually has an IQ of 158, I misremembered it (which is understandable as my IQ is a paltry 136)
