- The Sopranos follows New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano ask he looks to balance his family life with his gangster lifestyle. In one scene, the guys at the Bing, like Silvio, Paulie, Tony and Gigi are all shown to be taking cracks at Ginny. And while they’re making weight remarks, who else walks in but Johnny Sack, asking who everyone is talking about, with Tony just about managing to salvage the situation and the conversation moving on to different things.
It was a close shave, and season 4 shows us just have sensitive Johnny is about his wife’s weight, knowing her struggles with the fasting and the deal-a-meal cards, so a question arises - what if Johnny Sack walked into the Bing just a couple of seconds earlier, or stood by the door and listened to the guys take turns roasting Ginny? What would happen if he head everything, how would he react?

He did not want to burn Pauile as Paulie was still useful as a mole.
Paulie was still useful to Johnny as long as Tony didn't know he sold out Ralph to New York. Paulie would have been demoted or even wacked and Johnny loses his grapevine connection to the Sopranos' business.

No matter how you slice it, though, Johnny was not thinking clearly about the whole thing. Every way this demand for Ralph's head could go would either hurt Johnny's standing or hurt the business relationship with between the New York and New Jersey families, or both. Bringing Paulie into the conversation would hurt both..
@Jordan King Paulies only a soldier. Johnny sack was in a better position to do tony damage financially or other wise.

I suspect Johnny did hear the jokes but held it together. He’s a strange combo of emotional and calculating. And Paulie’s tip about Ralph opened that wound, causing John to isolate Ralph as a scapegoat. He knew he was a laughingstock for having a fat wife and Ralph became the easy villain to pin it on
Yes definitely you can be both but especially in this situation it was so traumatizing for him to hear it that the mind actually stops immediately so you actually can keep your cool pretty easily..

Johnny sack was always one of my favorite characters!
You didn’t see him open a door. He walked through a threshold. The door was out of view. If you’ve been to a bar, you would realize Johnny Sack was already inside the bar, just out of view, when Tony mentioned Ginny. He definitely heard him.
If Johnny did hear the New Jersey crew talking smack about his wife, I can see him aggressively confronting every single person in the room, daring them to repeat what they just said again, knowing that none of them would. I think he cared for Ginnie that much that he would defend her honour even when the odds were stacked against him. His balls were that big in my opinion. I'm not saying he would get violent because that certainly would give the New Jersey boys and excuse to retaliate, but if he *did* hear them say that I doubt he would let it go unchecked. I also think that having been caught red-handed, the New Jersey boys wouldn't get violent with him, they would be too mortified and also terrified of the ramifications.
And then pissing on all them before he leaves
I think John knew and overheard but there was nothing he could do. I think what set John off so much on Ralph is he saved his neck with Tony and got him a promotion (for his own benefit so he could profit more on business dealings) but felt Ralph was in debt to him for it, so he was so livid Ralph would go behind his back and insult his wife. It wasn’t just insulting Ginny but John thought he was betrayed.
He'd probably just have Jennie make him a nice pasta dish using her blood as the ragu

This is what I always thought, and I just figured that John couldn't really berate an entire room full of guys, whereas when Ralph did it he could focus his anger on him. Also he might have been more angry at Ralph since they were closer and he had helped save Ralph's life with Tony.
That play "hide and seek with jenny", joke would get you wacked faster than Vito puts on his assless chaps.
If you rewatch the scene you can hear the door open and a single footstep in the background while they are cracking jokes, a few seconds before Johnny Sack walks in.
So it’s possible he heard a lot more and as you said, played dumb in the moment.
I've rewatched that scene a few times, the only thing is though, they mention Ginny by name at first, then dont reference it again for a bit. so he mightve heard the jokes, but not the name and assumed they were talking about ginny
I don’t think Johnny overheard the jokes, but he suspected for sure. He would’ve gone ballistic, and it would’ve got back to Carmine, or someone maybe even Pauly. But the way Johnny felt about his wife he would’ve gone crazy
Sopranos Theories could learn a ton from this channel, this is actually well researched, well thought out, and clearly comes from a fan or fans of the show.

This is actually an interesting thought that I've never had but could play into him trying to play both sides or get more out of The sopranos because he is trying to get one over on Tony oftentimes. Maybe he didn't think that his friend would make jokes about Ginny, and was more focused on business. It could be the public nature of Ralph's jokes since maybe he knew being an enemy territory and outnumbered that blowing up on Tony would be a bad move as he constantly tries to show some respect for Tony's position if not Tony himself but at least they are behind closed doors making fun of his wife against the more brazen Ralph making a joke in front of all the friends of theirs.
Of course considering that John is actually pretty Machiavellian it could be just one giant power play to get rid of Ralph and using it as an excuse to do so and maybe put someone that he actually thinks he can control like a paulie in that position.
At the end of the day even John can't raise his hand to have made guy or it's very difficult to get away with it.

That's pretty cut-and-dry IMO. Tony would have killed Jesus Rossi himself. Maybe he would've tortured him a little first but we've never seen Tony doing anything like that so he probably would've just drawn it out a little like he did with Matt Bevilaqua.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I cannot believe how this is has not been spotted properly long ago by The Sopranos community, but the series has shown us very clearly what exactly would have happened if Johnny had heard those jokes: EXACTLY what has actually happened, because John DID hear those jokes! Come on, he walked in Precisely when they were loudly making fun of Ginny, saying her name all over the place and they had been making jokes for more than a minute until John stopped them with his timed entry "coincidence", what are the odds of that?
It's not even a debate of how low, they are clearly virtually zero. Will you say that it was just a show, so extremely unlikely coincidences could happen? Please, as we well know, The Sopranos is one of the very few shows were something like this would have Never been left explained as random by the genius of David Chase. Far more subtle details have been confirmed to be intentional, so how could have this critical moment been random? He either overheard or even waited at the doorstep for some time, to confirm it and then he chose the moment which would not have been too obvious, thus allowing the guys to save face. The latter one is a speculation, but it's another coincidence that he entered at the precise rare moment which did allow them to save the day.
Hence his obvious aggressive approach, seeing their obvious consternation and calling ALL OF THEM them "deadbeats" and "illiterates" straight away, without a shred of opposition, something that would have not happened otherwise and further making it obvious that they were behaving like dogs caught on chewing the owner's shoe.
How could he have taken down an entire family? Carmine wanted to have him whacked over Ralph alone, let alone over trying to annihilate the entire Jersey crew. Getting in a fight like suggested here? I won't even comment on that, because it's brutally obvious how that would have ended for John. Would he have not been able to control himself? It's been shown multiple times how John is one of the very few characers who we know for sure would have been perfectly able to control himself, in a situation like this.
John countered it subtly with passive aggression and he made sure to send the strongest message possible once it was confirmed that somebody joked about Ginny in public. Of course his reaction with Ralph was a compensation "for this and many other things"! That's why he went berserker on Ralph, his former friend, despite being fully aware he would lose financially on that, as we saw that construction was his main source of income. He wanted to whack Carmine over the very same construction beef, but here he didn't even care about money and was so obsessed over one, technically even unconfirmed joke? Because all that was not over just one joke... And the face he gave Tony when Tony said he knew nothing about Ralph's joke said "Don't give me that bs Tony, but I'll make sure this one is the last time, believe me". Needles to say, as he well knew, this was indeed the last time Ginny was ever joked at; he had made his point, without even having to actually kill Ralph.
This is in my opinion the biggest "hidden" message that I have never seen commented once on any video, before today. Please correct me if I'm missing on something critical here, because I cannot see how there can be even any debate on this subject.

One small issue: there's no reason to believe that Johns behavior in his office suggests he knew that Tony was guilty of joking. He gave us no indication of that at all.

He heard the joke for sure, but not Ginny's name. They'e in a strip club, they easily could've been talking about one of the girls. Anytime you walk into a room and people go dead silent its going to be suspicious, but people probably wouldn't want to make fat jokes about any woman in Johnny's presence. He probably wouldn't find it funny.

I think it’s very likely that John heard the jokes, or at least the subject matter of the last joke, making him suspicious. I’ve always compared that scene with the one when Christopher walks in on Vito and Co laughing about Adriana and Tony. I think it’s most likely that John heard something resembling a fat joke, and was suspicious bc of his own insecurity on the subject. If he actually heard one or more of the jokes verbatim, he would’ve lashed out imo. Great video as usual!

I think if he heard those guys joking about his wife he wouldn't have said anything. He probably would have just greatly soured on Tony and their friendship and his dealings with the Glorified New Jersey crew.
He probably would have been hurt and maybe told Carmine about it and have him removed from basically being the liaison to the Lupertazzi Family's shared construction and business dealings with the Jersey Family and put on something else similarly lucrative as the Underboss.
Carmine would never have sanctioned hits on another family for something like that especially with money at stake. It wasn't even technically breaking any mafia rule.
Or maybe Tony would have confronted John about why he was giving him the cold shoulder and he would have told him "I heard how you talk about my wife behind my back good buddy". And waited for Tony's response.
Regardless he wouldn't have forgotten about it especially when he became boss of the family...however short lived his stint was.

If Tolls were affordable, people wouldn't need to try to beat the system. Reminds me of the city of Mesa who had a parking lot of Recycling bins but no trash bins. They installed cameras to prosecute those who left their trash. They boasted on how many offenders they caught. Not everyone can afford garbage service. I honestly felt the city should have trash bins for the public too. Most people can afford the service, so the people who would dispose of their trash would be the needy. I felt Mesa was disgraceful bragging about these offenders.

This is correct. Johnny had a temper and hearing those jokes would have pissed him off but that dude is smart. He knows he couldn't take all those guys at once. He would of done it your way.
If he'd heard he would have walked out. If it was Gigi he heard and he whacked him it might have accelerated Ralphs progress to Captain. Kind of darkly funny under the circumstances. With that in mind if Paulie later tells him about the source of it all but not realising John had not whacked Gigi then I don't see how he could do also have whacked Ralph without arousing suspicion. By that point he'd have had to let it go.
