    HBO’s The Sopranos follows the life of New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano and all the colourful characters his life is surrounded by, like his wife and two children, his protegee Christopher Moltisanti, and his mob underlings like Silvio, Paulie and Furio.
    When Paulie is running information to New York through Johnny Sack, he also tells him about the joke that Ralph Cifaretto made about his wifee. But why did John not tell Tony Soprano, who was his close associate?
    Paulie “Walnuts” Gualtieri is a solider in the DiMeo family, later becoming a captain and eventually the underboss of the family. An interesting figure, Paulie is a highly paranoid germaphobe who’s petty, jealous and competitive behaviour often put him and others in trouble.

    Funhouse: Our true enemy... has yet ....to reveal himself...
    Tony then peers through the looking glass and sees himself shooting Paulie.
    Paulie also shows up in a "blink and you miss it" moment as part of the mob that threatens Tony during his dream sequence in the episode "The Test Dream" directly after Annet Benning declares the line " There's something bugsy about him".
    Paulie was also sitting in the only red chair during the sit down with NY at the end of the show and shook butchies hand behind tony back.
    Paulie also had the cat that looks at rats stare him down in his final scene in the show.
    It's all there.

      In Blue Comet, Paulie shows up to Satriales with a box of barber scissors. This is after an earlier scene where Butchie and his guys are meeting in a barber shop, assumed to be Butchie's shop to some degree.
      Patsy and Paulie meeting with the cousins from Italy was so secretive that they had to talk about it in the bathroom (at the Bing). Paulie tells Patsy "it's all yours" before they flush at the urinals. Patsy doesn't look like he is just ordering a hit on Phil, he looks like he is taking on a much bigger responsibility.
      It looks like Patsy and Paulie conspired with New York to take out Tony. Patsy has a pretty good reason to conspire against his boss considering he killed his twin brother. And most of the family was losing faith in Tony anyway. He had no real allies left in that last episode.

    Paulie was Johnny Sac's pipeline into what Tony's crew was doing. That info could be used two ways: First, he could impress Carmine with his inside information. Second, he could use it as leverage against Tony when he became boss of New York. In some ways Paulie was a more valuable asset to NY than his own crew.

      He also went to Tony before saying anything to Carmine to give Tony a chance to cut a deal rather than being found out. This would strengthen his relationship with Tony which is a big favour, unfortunately Tony didn't see it this way at all so Johnny instead uses the information to strengthen his relationship with Carmine, demonstrating how useful he is even though he would rather have used the situation to get closer to the Boss of another family.

When they were negotiating the hit on Ralph and Tony offered to give Ralph up if Johnny named the person who was talking out of turn Carmine and Johnny exchanged a look. I always saw that as Carmine subtly telling Johnny 'don't do it. we need to keep our mole in place for further intel'. I didn't think Carmine was giving Johnny the OK to give up their info source. Johnny never had to give up Paulie, Tony knew the entire time or at least suspected it was Paulie (it gets brought up consistently throughout the series after no longer being a main plot point). Both Tony and Johnny use it is a power move. Johnny doesn't want to reveal in front of carmine that he'd been doing off record business of any kind with Paulie or that he'd used his name, and also withholding the information from Tony is like "i know you know, but i know you can't do anything to a Made man without proof, which I will not provide for you" and Tony's way of handling it seems to be to bring it up around Paulie whenever Paulie is pissing him off in a "we both know about your transgression, remember that i can bring this down on you whenever I want" kinda way, but also because after so many people died as a knock on effect of Paulie yapping to Johnny, it puts Tony in a precarious position with the rest of the captains to have overlooked it (one thing the show never really takes into account is that the "boss" really needs to keep his captns happy)

  • @azimibrahim1216
    @azimibrahim1216 2 года назад +65

    It’s a strategic move. If he tell tony about paulie he will strengthen tony position. He doesn’t want that. Great analysis. To add my few cents, I always thought that Johnny made a huge deal out of Ralph's joke, because he knew very well, that Jersey guys were making fun of his wife. It was not so much about Ralph's joke, but about sending a very strong message to Everybody.
    That legendary moment when he Almost entered when they were making tones of jokes - there is No way he would not have heard or realized what it was about. Even the slightly hostile remarks he said immediately: "Is that all you deadbeats do, talking about cus?" and "It's right there in front of you, you f*cking illiteates, turn it up!" It was quite disrespectful, walking into a room of highly-ranked made Jersey guys and commenting like that, with them playing it like if they had just been caught.
    His last comment to Tony was "No more weight remarks Tony, they are hurtful and they are destructive." That was not just about one single Ralph's joke, he was very clearly referring to "You guys stop making fun of my wife, next time, you'll know what you are risking!"

    Johnny could have been holding onto the info about Paulie for a big moment later on that never came. Giving up an informant (even if it's only an informant informing to another family instead of to law enforcement) would be a huge bargaining chip.

    I think the real reason is because there was a contingency plan to place Paulie as the new boss if the relationship between the sopranos and new York were to sour even more, and why would Paulie be the one too replace Tony ? well its for all the reasons you mentioned in this video and more, Paulie is loyal to new York and has a healthy fear of the five families and isn't interested or ambitious enough to solidify the NJ faction as anything other than a glorified crew, placing Paulie at the helm would give new York a stronger grip over their operations

    • @empac8631
      @empac8631 2 года назад

      That makes sense in regards to the finale too, there’s always been that lingering look of shame and sadness on Paulie’s face after the truce, like he knew Tony just signed his own death warrant by getting Phil too, and that he’ll be expected to kick up. I think Paulie being so connected to both families and taking the “thing of theirs” so serious puts him at an advantage of experience and knowledge, he knew it was common sense that they weren’t just going to off Phil with no retribution for everything that happened. Also makes sense why Paulie kept trying to turn down being the Cappo of the waste management crew. Not only is the position cursed, but as this time he knew they were squeezed in tight against NY and couldn’t take any generosity from Tony knowing what was probably about to happen and that he’d be staying Neutral after

  • @empac8631
    @empac8631 2 года назад +27

    As much as I love deep diving into Soprano’s theories and lore I always just kinda took this storyline for what it was presented as. Johnny is shown to love his wife and be very old school, respectable gentleman gangster type. Also he sees Jersey as barely a branch in the gigantic New York crime family tree. I think him and Paulie are about the same age, and Paulie’s always had a feeling he was more important than he is. I could see years of him and Johnny making small talk where Paulie takes it to heart and thinks he’s making a friend and John almost pities him for it. You could see it meant the world to Paulie that John, someone pretty big time in NY, took the time to call him when he was in the can where Tony and the boys didn’t.
    I also think it just comes down to a petty jealousy. Paulie wants a painting of Tony in his house, he clearly idolizes him quite a bit, and seeing Ralph being the golden boy earner who acts like his shit doesn’t stink would rub Paulie wrong immediately. So when Ralph is doing something as disrespectful as saying John’s wife is fat, knowing what Ginny means to him, he takes it upon himself to repay not only John’s faux friendship but make some trouble for Ralph who Tony has been sticking his neck out for and who’s been towering above the rest with his kickings. Do I think Paulie did it with the intention of Johnny wanting to kill him? Probably not, but maybe enough to let John know who’s saying what and where loyalties lie- maybe make a show of it and have Ralph demoted or shipped off.
    As for Johnny not giving him up, like everyone thinks yes it’s good to have someone on the inside and ratting Paulie out would make him look untrustworthy but I honestly kind of think John appreciated Paulie being the only one to tell him something about Ginny. I think she’s his weakness, and if Paulie just came shit talking he wouldn’t have cared, but Paulie is giving John the inside knowledge of not only some of the family affairs but letting him know not yo be buddy buddy with Ralph; it would make him look like an idiot to Jersey, and that his wife is being disrespected and John wants to know to protect her and his image. I think that’s why he ultimately calls off the hit too, is that after being prepared to basically go to war for her honor he sees she hasn’t been making any positive changes to her weight so he can’t even be upset that they’re making fun of someone struggling to get better; but still why he says to Tony “no more weight remarks”

    I think it was smart of Johnny Sac to not give up Paulie, or at least keep the info in his back pocket. There are PLENTY of ways to get on Tony's good side but it's definitely NOT easy to get inside information on the happenings of the Soprano Family!
    Think, Johnny ONLY got the inside info from Paulie because, being pissy that his family wrote him off while he was in jail, Paulie went out of HIS way to reach out to Johnny and start spilling the beans. Approaching a member of Tony's crew and offering cash or favor with Carmine in exchange for inside information is absolutely out of the question for Johnny. If the person Johnny approaches acts interested but then runs to Tony to tell him what Johnny is up to, Tony could retaliate by giving Johnny dis-information, end his relationship with Johnny all together, or even kill him!
    All in all, it was more valuable to Johnny Sac to NOT give up Paulie at the particular moment, in my opinion. Even waiting for a more strategic time to offer Tony the "snitch" in his crew could benefit Johnny more than leveraging his source just to kill Ralphie over a joke

    I don't think Johnny thought that taking Ralph out would hurt his pockets. He told Tony anyone could handle it and even suggested Pat DeCorvo

    OK. Thank you you hit the nail on the head. Johnny Sack is treacherous. But he’s not a snitch. Good job

    Once he saw Ginny going behind his back and binge eating, his perspective on the situation changed.

    The joke was a device to bring the underhanded dynamics between the mobsters into the foreground. Giving up Paulie would be an admission of John's deceitful practices and compromise his status vis a vis him and Tony. Remember, there was little genuine respect between New York and Jersey - the former always feeling like they were dealing with subordinates, albeit useful subordinates who merited displays of respect for pragmatic reasons.
