In The Sopranos, we follow New Jersey mob boss as he looks to be a successful father to his family and also a successful boss to his crime family, a crime family which is full of volatile and colourful characters, such as Paulie Gultieri, Ritchie Aprile, and that animal Blundetto.
One of Tony’s crew members is Vito Spatafore, a character introduced in season 2 as Ritchie Aprile’s nephew and later a cousin to Adriana and Jackie Aprile jr, although, technically, the actor who plays him also appeared in season 1 as a different character, Gino.
Vito is eventually discovered to be gay, and he is killed by Phil Leotardo's crew. But what I wanted to look at in this video, is who exactly was to blame for Vito’s death? Because, perhaps moreso than any other hit in the show, I think there is a whole group of individuals that need to take responsibly for Vito’s death, and the more you think about the Vito fiasco, the more people you notice are involved. So lets take a look at the suspects, in a rundown beginning with those who I think are most responsible.

@Nero Wynn same thing I was thinking. You do 20 years in prison, you had you a boy or two. Tony even admits that it's common with monsters doing long prison sentences. *GOOD CALL!*👍
They would never be able to make these shows today.
@Nero Wynn This!
Vito's biggest blunder was trying to come back AFTER fleeing. Actually, Big Puss also made this same mistake.
He could have stayed in that small towing living a quiet life out of the closet, but he had to try to get back in.
Big Puss should've stuck with The Rockford Files.
Pussy didn't have a choice, the FBI wanted him back to collect evidence, it was either coming back or facing at least 25 years in the can and the man was no Phil Leotardo.
His biggest blunder was leaving at all. I love how the video suggested that Vito should've claimed his accuser owes him money, he was already some douchebag from Yonkers in Tony's eyes
Big Puss had no choice he was already an FBI informant.
THE ONE WE HAVE TO BLAME FOR VITO'S MURDER, IS HIS DOCTOR WITH THESE MEDICATION!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah but Vito should have gotten a note from the doctor and he never did.
@@jackgrimaldi8685 IT WAS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vito was too lazy for a regular job he literally preferred death.
but he was supposed to have surgery!
Also the way you pointed that out is so fkn true 😂
Vito was an earner. Cause he didn’t want to go back on the tools after being off the for many years he can’t be blamed.
As a former construction worker, once you get off the tools it’s a harder thing to return to. You might have to do it over the years but each time it gets harder and harder.
@@mikhailv67tv true, but I think another important part is the fact that Vito made more money and at a faster rate than working a regular job. Probably even double the money. I'm not saying anything new
Maybe if he had some power tools. I mean...was Vito trying to become Amish or something? You can't even sustain a job site, or your pay without power tools.
Back in 2000, Vito could build a whole wheel chair ramp in a single day.
In 2007, it takes Vito 5 hours to put up a piece of trim
It's not laziness. Look at Tiny B's downfall. Once he got. A taste of the life again with that windfall bag, he couldn't go back.
Comedy is to blame, Vito died for his comedy act he was just doing it for a joke and I respect his commitment.
On top of that, the 2 guys that spotted Vito totally stick out like a sore thumb in the nightclub.

How have we never talked about the fact that PHIL Unitardo was in the closet WAITING for Vito? I mean…who even knows how long he was in the closet! Could have been 20 fucking years!!
🤣🤣🤣 Congrats-successful hit. I'm dead.
Lol that is a good one
Phil was inthe closet since puberty.
Now go get your fuckin shinebox!!
He compromised
Tony: If Vito wanted to pursue that lifestyle, he should've done so quietly
Silvio: He was, wasn't he?
Blowing dudes at a mob-controlled job site?
Dancing in leather gear at a mob-controlled gay club?
Fails to pre-think a halfway decent excuse for either of these?
Vito wasn't doing anything quietly, because that wasn't exciting to his sociopath's mind. He got off on the risk of almost being caught in the act of gay sex, because the punishment was so severe. It was like gambling. Not that unusual, Oscar Wilde did the same thing, called it "feasting with panthers". Of course he eventually ended up disgraced and imprisoned for it...

“PHIL I HAVE THE NOTE FROM MY DOCTOR! IT IS IN THE FRONT POCKET OF MY PANTS JUST REACH AROUND UNTIL YOU FIND IT! OH GOD NOOOOO!”
Phil didn't want to give Vito the chance to say Phil was also gay
Another person to blame for Vito's demise was the Jersey mobster Vito ran into in the supermarket on his return to Jersey. The mobster asks for a huge loan, which Vito agrees to and to make sure he wouldn't have to pay the loan back, that mobster calls Phil in NY and lets Phil know Vito is back in town.
How else could Phil had found out?
There's a scene in the back of the butcher shop after Vito is killed where someone mentions if he knew that Vito was getting whacked he would have asked for a loan, and we see the smiling face of the one who did get that loan. Ruthless back stabbing fuckers, all of them lol.
That's right.
Since The Many Saints of Newark release and all the buzz I think I've realized something new about the Sopranos and your post kick- 👢-started my heart, lol.

Oh I had a point lol
Movie goers seem disappointed with Many Saints of Newark, like Dickie's final scene.
Random and ridiculous things happen in gangs, in real life, not just LCN domestic terrorists.
I suppose their is a lot of fanfare that folks expect/require lol with entertainment, films, series but with a legend like the Sopranos I embrace every piece of the puzzle. Down to the most mundane simple situation that could have mammoth repercussions later on lol 😆
Good point 👍
I wish I asked Vito for a loan as well.
i dont think he "ran" into him -he knows hes around per tony and he wants a loan-he reached out to vito for a loan knowing he wouldnt have to pay EVER-why would vito randomly go shopping was he making dinner for johnny cakes again😆😆-
I presume that Vito has gotten away for so long with the secret, that he ended up being more and more careless about it. And he may have enjoyed the risk as well, until it caught up to him. Furthermore, he thinks that everyone can be bought with money, and he was almost right. Tony was tempted to accept the $200,000 if it weren’t for the Shah pestering him about Vito. Nevertheless, Vito should know that he couldn’t trust anyone. After all, they asked HIM to kill his own cousin, Jackie Jr. If he has no loyalty to his own blood, and his mob friends know that as well, why should they be trusted?
It was the medication he was on, it fucked with his head.
Phil Leotardo doesn't look like the Shah of Iran. I don't see the resemblance.
@@tony_dogs he could have gotten a note too
The shah lmfao
Is he really his cousin. I know they said it once but there’s no established bloodline connecting them and they never mention it again. Also that would possibly make him Adriana’s cousin and he jokes about her hitting on him.
Vito is 100% responsible. He should have been smart enough to keep it out of sight and far from where he lived and worked.
I don't think the writing of this arc was particularly good and was glad when it ended.
Yeah, it was a terrible arc. Johnny Pancakes? Jesus Christ
People probably got wise to Vito being the extra in the first episode and they did just as bad of a scramble in the writing room. “Uh…uh we’ll get him whacked for fanookism…and…and he’ll get caught at a leather bar and play it off as a joke…yeah that’ll work…” 😂

@@octavioherschberg5280 Vito never had the makings of a varsity athelet
This was the first time I remember thinking Tony couldn't last as boss. It was ridiculous for Tony to even consider keeping Vito as part of the family. There was WAY too much resistance from way too many of his own guys, not to mention Phil and all that.
makes you think how much money he was really pulling in to make him think that way, the esplanade was no small cookie
Vito was more deserving and loyal than half the guys against him.
@@portugal5698 what????Dont you remember the scene in the hospital after Tony got shot when Vito and Paulie bring Tony that envelope and Carmela tells Tony she suspected there was a lot more and they were holding out? This doesn't mention the fact that earlier on Vito talks to Eugene after his Florida thing goes away and tells Eugene that Tony might have a heart attack and then Vito would be boss of the family.
@@portugal5698 Yeah, true, but Tony could have played that better, let Vito earn the money , pay the guys a percentage to shut them up for the time being..and work up Vito's replacement.. Even shoot Phil a nice chunk of the income until Vito slips up, or is replaced.. One would have to find the right guy to slip into Vito's shoes, but good leaders are known for that sort of thing..
Then once it's settled, give Phil the green light to wack him.. everyone's happy, gets a nice chunk of cash, and you don't miss a step in the income. That's how I think it would play out in the real world, Vito's days would certainly be numbered, but they would find a way to wring every last cent out of him before knocking him off..
Even hinting that they "know" things about him would keep him in line, he would probably off himself knowing there was no escape anyways..
Tony was just too greedy it seems and didn't want to share his cash cow with anyone, despite the indifference to the rules, Tony left himself wide open, and should have acted decisively the day he found out, instead of hoping things would go on the way they were..
Things had been going downhill for him ever since Junior shot him.
The problem is that Vito was catching not pitching.🤔
Yeah, but he certainly had the makings of a varsity catcher.
That is part of the problem. A lot of the mobsters did prison time. They probably understood homosexual acts in prison, but always wanted to be pitching there. When you catch, you are submitting. Not good for a monster.

Vito's big mistake was convincing himself he could get away with it. He should have always been looking for a way out but instead he focused on moving up the ranks. He should have focused on earning the money to set himself up elsewhere, similar to what he suggested to Tony after coming back. He should have been working on a way out of that circle not deeper into it.
Apart from that, I don't think you can blame him. Yeah he was dumb to suck a guy off in the car park and to go dressed like that to a gay bar, but it's not like he could go on grinder or anything, how else could he meet guys? Where could he realistically go? He's not exactly safer going to the New York gay scene.Yeah he should have known that being in the mob and gay would get him killed, but when did he realise he was gay and when and how did he join the mob. Say if his Dad pushed him into the family business, there's not much he can do especially if he doesn't really know he's gay yet. I doubt Vito had many options, it might have been joining the mob was his only real way of making money. I doubt he was in a position to say 'actually I should find a job that suits my ass-munching lifestyle.'
As for Finn, Vito is used to mobsters, he probably can't trust anyone to keep a secret and not use it against him. So Vito went with a 'I can be your best friend or your worst enemy approach.'
The gay bar was in New York because he was more thinking of not wanting the Jersey people to catch him in a gay bar in Jersey
At least with the security guard he obviously already knew him, they could have met privately. And Vito had a wife and girlfriend so it wasn't like he was trying to find true love. He definitely had enough money to find a discreet prostitute. I agree nowhere in public was without risk but that's kind of the point
Should have went to PA. But clubs may not be open as late.
He should have gone to Pace college.
He could've gone to a different state, but he went to NY, which is known for mob presence, specially mobsters that most problably would recognize him, as one finally did. Also NJ and NY are basically the same urban area, so if you are fully aware that being spotted means death, you might want to put at least a couple hundred miles between your "friends" and your deeds. He was a wealthy man, he could've jumped on a plane and spent a weekend away doing gay stuff freely but he went to the city with the most notorious mob families in the country. He was just careless and stupid, just as he was when he sucked a security guy in the place his fellow mobsters and other acquaintances hang around.
This was a way for Phil to get at. Tony for the death of his brother.

I think Vito hoped he could get a little bit of Finn for himself if you catch my drift.

I love all of the quotes about Vito you worked into the script.
I think the way in which the show tries to portray Vito as being sympathetic only to later show how much of a monster he was is masterful writing/filmmaking.
Vito Spatafore was a man willing to murder innocents for something as simple as not wanting to be in trouble for driving intoxicated.
It was way more than “driving while intoxicated”. These mob dudes have connections and feelers out everywhere. A police arrest/report with Vito would INSTANTLY give him away. Like, how am I even having to say this? It wasn’t about a DUI lol. At all.

As an aside you know what's weird? In the elevator Paulie is the one that had the disgusted look on his face for giving Carmela the money but she singled out Vito to Tony as the one to look out for. Am I the only one that wondered this?
I agree with your statement about Vito trying a less intimidating approach with Finn. I think had he pulled Finn aside and admitted he was gay and asked him not to tell because he wouldn’t be accepted, Finn would’ve been reasonable, especially knowing Vito had a lot to lose if the secret got out. But the intimidation tactic ended up being too stressful for Finn, and he had to tell someone, that being Meadow and she of course told Carmela and then it got out to everyone else. But yeah if Vito was being that reckless, he was going to get found out eventually.
Great video as usual! I'd like to put in my thoughts: These guys are sociopaths, and Vito was no exception. They are impulsive enough under normal circumstances, but when you add panic and paranoia into the mix, you get things like Vito shooting a guy - whose car he wrecked - right there in the driveway. When lust overrides their logical thinking, you get Vito dancing in a popular club that he should have known had mob connections. He did bring it on himself.
We see in season six how problems were getting generated or made worse due to impulsivity: Tony in various situations, Chrissy shooting J.T. Dolan, Bobby punching Tony (deserved, but still unadvisable), Phil acting from emotion rather than over reason, etc. The list goes on. Season 6 was apocalyptic in tone.
That jerk parked in the middle of the road, just beyond a curve. Then he insisted on calling the cops rather than taking some cash for what was really his own fault. Nothing impulsive about that hit. Vito did what he had to do.

You forgot 3 other prominent people active in Vito's demise. Carmella, Rosalie and especially Meadow. It was Meadow who actually made what Fin had seen public, and it was Carmella who actively went ahead and signed Vito's death warrant by telling Tony. Both Carmella and Rosalie being seasoned mob wives would've known exactly what such an apparent corroborated fact would do, and yet Carmella was more than happy to share the gossip than hold back, when a family man's life was on the line.
It was in the video, how could he forget if it was literally in the video?

Rosalie doesn't have anything to do with it.
Good point 😮
maybe Carmella remembered Vitos sketchines with the money while Tony was in a coma ...
They should of done more with the telephone tough guy , he was my favourite road worker .
The way you said “Vito Spatafore….was an ass muncher” had me dying hahaha
Vito killing Finn to keep his secret would’ve made sense. I don’t know why Vito would’ve ever told Tony or Meadow about it afterwards, though. Why wouldn’t he just make Finn’s corpse disappear? As far any of the other mobsters had seen, Vito was always nice to Finn at the construction site. It’s unlikely anyone would’ve suspected him of the murder.
I never understood one thing. How exactly was Vito such a great earner in the construction business? From what, sitting on his ass at no-work jobs? Vito himself said that construction was a highly homophobic industry. He earned millions from sucking off security guards...at the job site? Doesnt make any sense.
Vito supposedly earned so much that Tony berates Carlo for bringing in a fraction of what Vito was earning.
Vito being an all time great earner in construction made even less sense than Ralph Cifaretto being untouchable due to the "millions he brings in from construction alone". If I understood it correctly, it was Tony's political connections that secured the contracts for all the big construction projects.
The workers on the job sites seemed to loathe the presence of the mobsters, as they should. Dudes making 50/hour sitting in lawn chairs, eating doughnuts and taking naps all day.
So where were these millions of dollars coming from? This shit never made any sense to me.
Ironically, Ralph would have been the only one to be lenient with Vito.
Actually tony didn’t care so long as it didn’t affect business
Blundetto to me had a lot to do with Phil torturing him as well. He was a substitute for as you can see, Phil never got over that animal killing his brother. I could go a step further with the foreshadowing too. Season five, Tony telling the crew if he give up Blundetto they matter as well give up the whole thing. Before that speech, Vito saying he willing to die, but this is BS. Sadly, he indeed died at the hands of another crew. Same thing Tony was preaching at the end of season 5
Blundetto was a animal
Yeah Phil probably was mad that Vito was gay but let's not pretend he cared about his cousin, Marie. If he cared, killing Vito was the worst thing because it left her with no financial support and its not like he stepped up to give her any money. Phil wanted to torture and kill a member of the Soprano crew an eye for an eye for his kid brudda Billy and he finally got that through Vito.
Vito would have been spared if he had the jacket.
😆
This is an interesting analysis bc it demonstrates how the women in the lives of the mafia are just as equally to blame for the murder of Vito.
But like Paulie said, he had a Goomah!
Not really, it's the fault of the guys who killed him. The guys with fragile masculinity that feel the need to kill someone who's gay just to avoid being associated with him
How?
It's Vito's medications fault
Phil coming out of the closet is the weirdest scene in all of Sopranos. There may have been a reason to write that into the script but it’s weird and it’ll never not be weird.
ultimately phil was projecting his own insecurities. especially the close up of his hand grabbing the bed sheets.

@@renel896420 F#CKING YEARS
Regardless of who is to blame for Vito's murder, my read is that many of his brothers-in-arms cared for their fallen comrade underneath his homosexuality and how repugnant they found it. A key scene that illustrates this is when Fat Dom shows up at Satriale's, all but admits to killing Vito when joking about it with Silvio & Carlo, and you can see all over their faces that they are genuinely upset. When Sil tells him it's time to leave, Dom keeps egging them on and crosses one line too many, so it appeared to me that killing him was a murder of passion, a purely impulsive act by Sil & Carlo (who both erupt into violence in near-perfect sync). When Tony walks in on Dom's corpse, Sil despairs "F***in' Vito!" Despite all their homophobia and some of them being eager to kill Vito after he was outed, I believe they were still upset by his murder (especially with Dom being so obnoxious about it) because of all their shared history. Deep down, the New Jersey guys - to varying degrees - still considered him a friend and member of their family, and his unsanctioned hit at the hands of the New York faction - even if they wouldn't admit it - was totally out of line.
"He couldn't think straight, literally" 🤣🤣🤣
Here's an interesting question, if Vito stayed in NH would they just let him live? Or would Phil find him in New England and kill him anyway?
He'd probably be fine until the social media age started and Vito popped up on Facebook as the winner of the NH regional pie eating contest and one of the NYC gangsters saw it and showed Phil and they take a road trip.
Vito couldn’t deal with boring civilian life.
Wait a minute, Phil Leotardo did time in prison? I think Vito had no idea how to handle that situation with Finn, not did he know how to handle his secret
Yes, he did do time. Twenty years, in fact. It was actually mentioned quite a few times in the show.
After watching this only one question comes to mind. Who told Phil? Tony told everyone in the room to keep it to themselves!
I’m guessing it was Phil’s cousin
He was a married man with children, a Catholic Christian and an Italian mobster who did a whole bunch of vows. His degenerate behavior is wrong on so many levels and he absolutely deserved to get into some serious trouble for it.
Lmao, you admit that he's a mobster but then call him a degenerate just for being gay? Are you fucking serious?
Serious trouble? He's GOTTA GO!!
When Finn asked what was gonna happen to Vito and Chris answered we'll get him to pay for some therapy lol 😆
Also Carmela has a hand in killing Christopher sowing the seeds of deceit in Tony’s heart after telling him the movie was about him it’s like Carmela acts dumb sometimes like she doesn’t know who her husband is or what her husband does and tells him certain things that’ll probably lead to certain absolute things or somebody getting whacked
yes, that's a weak side of the script. no mafia wife would be so clueless. same with Adriana's murder. Carmella was good friends with Adriana. Adriana disappears and Carmella suspects nothing.
Oh please. Tony should contorl himself

Phil may have been a victim of assault in prison. He had no protection going in. He was there 20 years. Maybe that "compromise" wasn't up to him.
The tell-tale signs are there, the rage he feels towards Vito for one. This is the most brutal kill he had committed in the show. Like he wasn't really mad at Vito, but here he was. And it probably was a double whammy it was so close to home. If he was assaulted; he probably couldn't imagine someone choosing that lifestyle. Let alone in the Mob Life.

appreciate the marked uptick in random sopranos quotes with no warning. adds to the flavour
He could have survived if he got that note from his doctor.
Vito should've never taken those pills!
Great video man, I love your content. Thanks for making them!
Letting Vito back in certainly could have caused a lot of dysentery in the ranks
You ought to know, sweetie
I think Vito's intentions at the baseball game was to take him there, but you never know. One of the many head-scratchers of this series.
Looking forward to that video.
🎉🎉
Phil doesn't like to mention that he did 20 years, that's 20 years in the freaking can and not a beep! I dying over here!
I blame mostly the other guys in the crew.
They kept asking for head.
His head, what the fuck
Realistically, It’s on Vito. Dude was way to reckless with his vices.
Vito is to blame for getting involved in the mob in the first place.
#1 - Tony could have protected Vito. He could have put out the word that he does not want Vito killed and it'll be war with anyone who kills him. This would include NYC. Uncle Philly would not have been happy but I doubt he would have risked going to war over it. Past gangsters got away with a lot less. Kill a guy for being gay in the 2000s? Lame.
#2 - Phil didn't really care about family honor. Killing Vito hurt his cousin, Marie, more than anything. She lost her husband and only means of financial support and its not like Phil stepped up to help Marie financially. Phil could have let it go but it was more about him still being pissed about Tony's cousin killing his kid brudda Billy and Philly wanting revenge in killing a member of the glorified jersey crew.
#3 - Ultimately, Vito killed himself. He knew these guys didn't really care about him. Sucks that he would have missed out on his wife and kids but he could have made a new life in NH. In time he might have found a job he liked. He came back in the hopes of easy money knowing the high risk they'd just kill him.
Phil’s heart is an open book, Vitos death? Chalk it up to the headless horsecock, I mean horseman 🐴
You should do video on that ANIMAL BLUNDETTO
wait so vito was adrianas cousin but he still kept trying to hit on her when chrissy was in rehab?
Grindr for not existing yet.
Whilst one can admit to a certain sympathy for Vito when he's in that hotel room, he had only recently murdered a civilian and he killed Jackie Jnr. like it was nothing (suggesting it wasn't his first or even second rodeo). And he walked backed into that, even when he had got clean from it. He's a murderer who got murdered, really it's that simple. Hard to pin the blame elsewhere, even on Phil really who was really only following the code Vito signed up to.
This is discussed on Reddit, but his best option was probably the FBI. His high-level involvement in construction was almost certainly enough to help advance their case significantly.
Great vid! Pls correct me if I misunderstood: Between the 5:57-6:10 time markers, it is stated that "Vito coming out in the early '90s would've been..." Didn't this occur in the early to mid 2000's? ('05-'06, roughly)? Assuming Sopranos took place at present-day? If so, I know the argument doesn't change much. But it may be important to note the differences in acceptance in the early 1990's versus the 00's (which may change how we view the response of his crew).
you're right, it's only after the Obama/Ellen thing did Americans begin to accept homosexual people (in general)
This channel is amazing. All the quotes you pepper in are hilarious. Salute!
With Paulie being the leak in the Northern Jesrey Mob, he might've told Phil Leotardo about Vito's Location.
Alone time? How many people died without that “alone time?” All they needed to know was your location
it seems like you had a lot of fun with this one
Vito was fav character on the show.he was ambitious and focused and he was ruthless when he needed to be.you didn't want to cross him.
You’re loving using their slang on this one lol
First Johnny Sack now this, the guys in New York can't take a joke.
Seriously love your channel and all your videos regarding my favorite film sub genre the gangster film. Been watching you since I heard about the Irishman about a year before it’s release.
Much love from Kentucky in the United States.
Thank you for your kind words
I think Vito was going to try something with AJ when he offered to give him a ride home from the hospital. But Paulie wasn't letting AJ go Nowhere with him...
Homophobe detected.
He wasn’t gay. It was the blood pressure medication. I’m sure he could of got a doctors note
Vito should’ve wore a leather eye/facemask along with the biker outfit lol
The person who is most to blame for Vito death is the security guard . When that car pulled up and fin got out the security guard failed to look out for Vito. He should immediately put his hand on the back of Vitos head and held him there. Im sure Vito would have liked that anyway.
You would think the security guard would do that to protect himself if anything.
