Ford F150 shaking at highway speed FIXED. Vibration.

  • My 2018 F150 had a more of a shudder than a shake. I can see the tailgate shaking and bouncing at 60mph only. It runs fine at 50mph and 70mph but only shakes at 60mph when the engine is slightly under load. It turns out that the rear wheels were 5oz out of balance and that seems to have fixed my problem. More than anything, keeping the inside of the wheels free from snow, ice and mud also seems to really help. I read all the forums online and thought that I was going to have a nightmare on my hands trying to get the vibration fixed. From bad drive shafts to everything else, I didn't in a million years think that balancing the tires would fix it.

Hey, just saw your video. I have a 2014 f150 echoboost. I had my truck for almost 6 years never had an issue with vibration then I got a 6 inch lift with 35 inch tires and still no vibration almost 2 years later . after owning the lift I start to get vibration I’ll look in the back and see my tailgate, shaking, thinking it might be the driveshaft or the oversize tires. I have fox 2.0 shocks and the driver side is leaking. Not sure if it’s a Ford thing, but I’m still researching. Thanks.

i got new tires (replaced Terra Grappler G2's with Falken Wildpeaks), balanced twice by two different shops, a full alignment, purchased $120 worth of "specialty" camber bolts - still she vibrates. Mine is above 70, and its enough to mix paint. It's really starting to frustrate me. I got new lug nuts and tire pressure sensors because one tech suggested they could be different and might throw off the corner weights.

I am trying not to be a jerk, but if your toothbrush tastes a little salty, it could be that someone used it to clean off the road snow from the tires. I too just found my wife's truck vibrates at 60 mph, and have not yet investigated why. Here I thought perhaps it's transmission issues. I am put to ease knowing it might be something simple and inexpensive. Thanks for posting this. It's important to me and otherw who read this. THUMBS UP!

As a Automotive Technician- I always start with the Wheel Balancing first. Once that's eliminated- I check the Front End Suspension components: Ball Joints, Upper/ Lower Control Arms, Sway Bar Links, Shocks/ Struts, Inner and Outer Tie Rods, Wheel Bearings, and then lastly- I check the Motor Mounts.

My vibration started when I had Walmart put two new tires on the truck because I couldn't afford to buy 4 new tires on. Its been vibrating ever since and just like you, i can see the tailgate vibrating like crazy. Now that its been almost a year, im going to buy 4 brand new (better quality) tires from the dealership and see if that helps.
Beware of the dreaded four-wheel drive actuator issues that eventually happen. The bladder on the 4WD actuator starts loosing vacuum and it starts grinding like crazy. What a headache that was. 🫣 Awesome video and thank you. 🤘🤘

It’s called “tip in” happens in a high gear as you tip in the gas it’s under a very heavy load until you get into the gas. It will show a bad spark plug or coil on plug miss fire at that spot only a lot of times as you push through it miss fire goes away. Very lean running for emissions will burn up spark plugs. So I got it fixed so they said. I left and a day later still have the problem. Took it to shop 2 and got it fixed again they said the balance was way off. Got fixed again. I left again same problem a day or so later. I went to put air in my tire and noticed a small screw in my tire. Got that fixed and my problem went away all because of a small screw that no one seen . Figured I get back you on this problem.

🤞🏻 for you! I have those same tires on my 13’ F-250 and I have a similar shaking problem at certain speeds. I have had them rebalanced numerous times and every-time with a matter of weeks the shake is back and they have been rebalanced by a few different tire shops. I have been told that those Goodyear Wrangler’s are just junk tires; they are very difficult to balance and apparently they don’t hold a balance long. I’m currently just running the tread down on them until I get new tires later this summer. I ran BFG All-Terrain KO2’s on my last truck and they will be going on my new truck; best tire on the market in my opinion.

I just bought a 1990 F150 manual spd, 4.9L, and it had only 64K on it. Its looks really sharp but some rust on it makes me think that it could have more like 164K. Anyways, I got it up to 55 to 60 on a test drive and it shakes. I wanted to get it in for a front end alignment and had an appt, but the machine they said was broke down. So Went to oil change, and while there they checked air in tires. and I believe that helped some of the shaking. So now I am thinking the tires need to be balanced, I do know that has a lot to do with shaking too if a tire is bad or not balanced. So Thanks for the video.< beautiful there but too cold!

We should start a club for this shudder problem.2020 xlt 2.7 3000kms. I've had 3 visits to 2 different dealers. First visit they did a force balance. didn't solve it. Second visit they said to drive it till it got worse(wtf?). Contacted ford canada and they said to get a another dealer to test. Third visit the technician confirmed the vibration/shudder but that is was a characteristic of the truck. We then drove another brand new truck on the lot which had the same vibration fell as mine. So ya, guess I can pound sand cause that is how "they all drive". My vibration now seems to have gone from just felling it at around 75kph to feeling it and lower speeds too. It is still the same rpms which is 1500-1800 rpm. A mechanic suggested it could be engine related. The truck is also not getting the rated fuel economy. I'm getting 12.9L/100. Should be 11.8. Not a heavy foot but since I've discovered this vibration I could be just fishing for it and causing the truck to run in this state which certainly could the cause of the bad fuel mileage. I have a file with ford canada and they know I'm pissed but because the vibration is part of the trucks driving character I'm stuck with it. Selling/trading is not an option as I do not feel like taking a $8-10000 hit. Really want to like this beast but my ocd won't let me.

There is a recall on F150 and other Fords for the transmission, the lead member that attaches to the valve body can break off. Also there is a recall on the software that can give it codes and doesn't shift properly, eventually it can't be repaired. The lead member is an 8 month wait to get it done at the dealer on some sites I've seen. We have those darn wheels too. :( Our new 2011 3.7 4x2 developed a code for fuel air ratio after i sprayed the dirty engine down. I removed the filthy air filter, found a good used one in my buddy's junkyard and fixed the issue. Thanks for the wheel info, we have serious vibrations, suspect a wheel bearing front passenger and bad tires on rear need to be changed and that issue reaoved as well.

My 2010 F150 ....brand new (maybe 2000 miles). Enroute to VA from NC on I 64. Truck started to vibrate badly. Found a Ford dealer at next exit. Bad coil pack. Vibration so bad I stopped twice checking for a flat tire. Now......mileage is 89,000 vibration starts. After truck is driven less than 25 miles at high speed. When truck has not been driven then parked like going to the dentist, vibration starts when going home. Figured the same plug pack failure. Just in case , took the truck to a local totally honest mechanic I have known for 20;years. He drove it for less than 5 miles on back county roads. All the time complaining of breakers dragging. Calipers have a vibration, pedal is almost to the floor. He took a laser temperature of the front calipers. 1 was 525 degrees F. The other over 600 degrees. He believes the calipers are not resetting when the pedal is released . He has the truck until he can either turn the calipers or replace as he does not have a tool to turn them on the vehicle. We will see. Will up date this comment as soon as the planned repair/replacement is completed. Will also report his billing. Wish me luck.

I have a slight vibration at 30 and 60 mph. It feels like you are driving on worn rumble strips. All of the research I have done only returned one fix. The issue was noted as the rear carrier assembly being out of spec with excessive tolerances. Unfortunately, I have not had a Ford dealership willing to take on the task of checking the tolerances in the carrier sssembly.

This could be your torque converter. I thought for the longest time it was to do with my tires, turned out to be torque converter. When the shudder starts, let off the gas, then accelerate at a faster rate. The gear gets stuck and won’t lock in.

Plastic trim I thought was loose or rubbing and nothing. Wasn't until I got frustrated while getting up from under the bed, and I grabbed the tailgate itself to pull myself up and it squeaked right away. Other than figuring out that that tailgate had to be shut, not slammed good, the rubber bushings that made contact with the tailgate to the bed and the hard plastic insulators that the tailgate actually catches when shut were the cause of the squeaking. Once I had lubed them up with silicone paste, it never made another sound after that. When I got my '19 F150, the first thing I did was lube up the tailgate bushings and insulators, never had a squeal from it, even over a year of owning it now.

The main engine wire harness always breaks at the coil connector. This means coils not happy. Coils not happy spark is off. Ford and Harley-Davidson have spark on the exhaust stroke and the intake stroke. No wonder, with a lean burn engine.

Thanks for the great video, I like you went to a bunch of blogs and read all kinds of stuff and a lot of people seem to think that it has to do with the driveline, my 2010 F150 only has 60,000 miles and runs great but it has a vibration somewhere around 40 to 45 miles an hour nothing terrible but still noticeable and after reading so many people tell me that the tires and rims were not the problem I was inclined to think the driveshaft might be out of balance or came from the factory not properly balanced who knows? I’m sure will probably go ahead and get the tires and rims balanced just to make sure that’s not it, but it seems like it would do it at other speeds also if it was that in my mind, doesn’t do it at speeds higher or lower just 40 to 45 mph.

    • @kimp1942
      @kimp1942 2 года назад

This sounds exactly what was happening with my F150. Turned out to be the torque converter. When the shudder starts, let off the gas for it to stop, then accelerate at a faster rate to get the gear to lock in. If you find that this stops the vibration by accelerating faster thru that gear, you may be able to just replace the torque converter without having to do a rebuild.
