The Ecoboost had a lot of trouble spinning off the line in the first video, which is logical given it produces much better torque at a low rpm than the 5.0. Once they put them in 4wd, the Ecoboost was the clear winner. Most of us aren't buying a truck to drag race, and either the 5.0 or the 3.5 will do just fine. Comes down to personal preference.
Where I live eco-boost will stomp the 5.0. Live at 7560ft and the mountain passes are even higher. Living at altitude the ecoboost is the only way to go!!
After watching this I’m definitely liking the 5.0 more. I thought that there was a fairly large performance differential between the two, but maybe the update and new transmission helped unlock the Coyote’s potential. 3.5 is a great motor too, but I prefer natural aspiration and relative simplicity.
I drove and towed my RV with both of these engines in a 4 door 4wd truck before I bought and the 5.0 sounds great but I’m telling you know the 3.5 ltr walks all over the 5.0 while towing all while getting better gas mileage. I ended up dealer locating one in 2wd with 3:73 rear gear with the 3.5 ltr and holy hell it is a monster compared to the 4wd 3:55 rear gear 3.5 ltr.
I have a 2018 with the 5.0 wouldn't have it any other way except pair it with the 6spd, the 10spd is weird. I've played with the driving modes and found in ECO mode it does shift smoother. In Sport mode its an absolute joy and reminds you of a super car with the exhaust opening up and going through the gears hats off to Ford for that mode.
5.0 is much more reliable then the new eco boost it's been around a hell of alot longer problems have been fixed the new eco boost I have heard countless problem with the turbos and over heating issues so 5.0 all the way that and the sound of a V8 is amazing
Put a tune on those with no other modifications and you'll see the difference very quickly. Use an MPT tune and the coyote will gain 40ish HP and the ecoboost will gain 100+. V8 sounds better, can't deny that but if you tune, put in 4wd, load engine to max at launch the ecoboost will humiliate a coyote every time(in stock form).
I have owned both a 2011 with the 3.5 and currently a 2016 with the 5.0. They both have their plus's and minus's. I towed a 22 ft loaded trailer from Georgia to Pennsylvania and at 75 mph i was getting 7.3 mpg with the 3.5, i slowed to 65 and increased the mpg to 11.8. It rarely downshifted going up hills but the gas gauge would tell the tale. The 5.0 loaded the same got 13.5 mpg but would need to rev above the 4k range to pull the hills and would constantly downshift. The truck i had in the middle of these 2 was a 6.7l powerstroke in a F-250, it would make you forget you were even pulling a load and would get almost 17 mpg pulling the same trailer but i really didn't need that much truck. Someone else said if you were pulling all the time you need a truck like that and they are correct but i only pull something once or twice a year. Overall the 3.5 is impressive for what it does but i prefer the sound of a V-8 and feel that the long term ownership costs will be less due to the turbos but that is just a personal preference. BTW i paid a premium price for both engines, in 2011 the Ecoboost cost an additional 1100 dollars (5.0 was 550.00 extra) and in 2016 the 5.0 cost 1585.00, the 2.7 ecoboost free and the 3.5 was a 700.00 option i believe, So factor that in to your decision.
That's my experience too. 18+ mpg towing cars on open trailer with a uhaul f150 with 5.0L about 2 years ago converted my bowtie buddy to the blue oval (partly)
Robert Franklin unless you were tuned and deleted there's no way you were getting 17 probably more like 12-13 stock these 6.7s see 15-17 empty average coming from someone who's owned a 6.7 from 19 to 23 same truck not a single problem and would never for a thing in the world trade it from a stupid ecboost or silly 5.0
TheReal NateDogg wrong. Different drivers. What octane fuel in each? What optional equipment on each (weight)? What rear end differential gearing in each?
Just bought a 2017 XLT Roush with the V8 and that thing rides and runs faster and better than the two Sierra 1500’s I had before it. It’s scary fast, and sounds like a beast with that Roush Cat Back, I love it !
I have a 5.0L 2016 ford f150 and I love it but wish I went with the 3.5L for that year but man that 10 speed 5.0L keeping up with those turbos. Impressive. Mine now has a larger intake manifold, aftermarket air intake K&N, tuner and 3.5" exhaust. It does pretty well now and I've won a few races against a 3.5L with a tune.
ecoboosts are heavily tq limited with he load to tq and inverse tq to load tables. You can tune both trucks, but the 3.5 will win all day every day by "a lot" The 3.5 is a tq monster, but it's held back by ECU as I mentioned. Really wish you could get t he 2nd gen 3.5 in the mustang as an option.
The coyote has lots of top end. When you rev it out, that's when it shines. The ecoboost has little top end compared to the Coyote. If the Coyote had Mustang cam profiles. The Coyote would spank the ecoboost all day.
I owned a 2016 with 5.0 and now i own the 3.5 twin. 5.0 gets atleast 250-280 km more per tank of gas same size tanks.. That alone makes me miss the 5.0.
i work at a ford dealership and everyday i drive these trucks and i prefer the 3.5, the 5.0 doesn’t seem as stout and peppy. if anything i prefer the previous model 5.4, those are where it’s at
Performance is nearly identical, it appears. The 5.0 will outlive the ecoboost by a long shot. Talk to your mechanic before you buy. If you're trading the truck in every year it doesn't matter. But if you plan to keep the truck a long time, 5.0 is the only way to go.
Just bought a 2018 with a 3.5 ecoboost. Very quick truck. I also have a 7.3 Superduty (diesel) with perfomance mods(15 MPG) as well as a F-250 with the high output 460(7 MPG). That little 3.5 is quite a bit quicker than my other two trucks. It pulls 9,000 pounds as well as my Superduty. The 3.5 will supposedly tow 13K. The kicker is the mileage. Freeway cruising is hitting 23 mpg. 10 speed auto trans. I'm loving it. If it runs 200K miles I'll be super happy.
Round 1 was inconclusive ... engine was still cold and Turbo wasn't able to spool normally, (based on all the steam that blew out from the exhaust on take off)
they are very similar,so 3.5 is better.makes the same "drinking" less and higher torque. no doubt i prefer 3.5 . and before saying "tune the 5.0",don t forget about durability and fuel spending/consumption
I had a 2018 5.0 as a loaner with the new 10 speed tranny and it was amazing, smooth power and responsive! Very nice sound and power delivery, would definitely want the5.0 over the turbo
I have a customer which has 29 F150's with Ecoboost. They just traded the first 7 all with over 300,000 miles and no problems. They pull heavy fertilizer wagons and all the salesmen want Ecoboost rather than the V8's because of power.
• What gear ratios? • What octane fuel in each? • Was the Ecoboost launched properly (boost launched)? All that will make a huge difference in the Ecoboost. Either way, that new 5.0 is the shit! It is overall just an awesome V8.
I have a 2013 3.5 ecoboost 4x4 Lariat and it’s one thing after another. Limp mode trying to pass someone on the highway. Two blend door actuators, replaced all the spark plugs and coil packs and it still throws a check engine light, when a reader is plugged in it always says that there’s a misfire in some random cylinder.
What gear ratio are they both running? How has no one wondered.. Cause I guarantee my 5.0L with 3:73 would kill any 3.5L with 3:55 off the line harder than that... I'll put my 5.0 3:73 with cat back mbrp exhaust against anything but the Chev 6.2
I could be wrong, but if actually using it for towing and hauling wouldn’t that V6 have a lot less life? Isn’t that motor working twice as hard to make very similar HP?
Jay P You’d see the 5.0 get it’s azz handed to it....the only way the 5.0 can keep up is to be running 1500-2000 rpm higher at the same road speeds ....
John DiMartino yea there is a reason I said that lol. I owned a 2011 5.0L and a 2015 Ecoboost. Ecoboost is a towing beast and I expect it to be better. However I would still like to see the new 5.0l with 10 speed go at it. The new 5.0L is pretty underrated based on dyno runs I’ve seen lately. I’d still be surprised to see it near an ecoboost with trailer.
If that dude in the eco new how to launch he would eat that coyote block for dinner. Turbo launch in a truck is simply amazing. The weight and power to the ground is remarkable. Sure tune the 5.0 and it will be faster but tune the eco boost and you got a weekend drag truck that can run low 13s high 12s with no other modifications needing to be done.
Great racing. I'm surprised that 5.0 was so fast. I've got a 3.5 and love the power. It was not a very expensive upgrade and worth it for towing. Can't beat the low end torque
Tyler Proud you'll regret ever buying a v6 turbo when they go out... no power no boost no pulling power very slow and very expensive.. should have went with a V8. Just like the commercials you can't beat the real thing...
Tim Estep the thing is if the turbos go it's an excuse to get a better set. Every truck has its issues. It's a low revving low boost setup designed for longevity. I'd be sad if a v8 outran me but so far no dice. Lol
I love the sound of the 5.0 its a great engine. I know allot of these guys opinions are swayed by what they grew up with. Most have probably never driven a decent turbo charged vehicle. I have driven lots of both huge V8s and great little turbo four bangers. The world unfortunately will be leaving large displacement engines behind. I for one love the new Ford Turbo trucks and for people into modifying their rides, turbos offer far more increases in power than N/A engines can and for allot less dollar per HP. If only my truck sounded as sweet!
Why would you not test the 2wd mode again? Tests are skewed, you need to time each individually to get accurate results. Was the turbo spooled the last time? That was a pretty quick jump compared to the other times
joel I’ve thought that for quite some time... Problem is, you can’t make it faster than the Mustang... The first Turbo 4cyl Mustang back in the 80s had to be detuned to not over take their golden boy 5.0 See what I’m sayin? It’s a shame tho, maybe one day we will see that drivetrain setup in the Mustang first. Also price point, maybe they aren’t quite there technology wise to make it, and offer it, at a competitive price point yet.
Both are great motors. A lot of you guys are splitting hairs. Both perform nearly identical so it’s more just what you want. I personally got the 3.5 EB because I love the sound of them turbos. I read somewhere online the turbos are only running at 60% capacity? For reliability reasons- would make sense. Either way my truck is a lease. It’s purpose in our life is for vacation. Not a daily driver.
TheDarkness2487 The smaller the motor, the more strain it will go through. The 5.0 is by far the most proven and reliable motor you could get in a current F-150.
Jared B the build materials of the 2.7L make me wonder tho. The 5.0L is tried and true, no doubt, but its an aluminium block and NEEDS to rev higher to achieve ita power. The 2.7L has a compacted graphite block and doesnt require high revs to make power. Of course turbocharging any engine is theoretically more damaging to it, this engine wasnt exactly a N/A design with turbos bolted on. It seems like they actually designed it to handle the stress.
TheDarkness2487 If you knew what went into truly making these engines tick, you would know that what the block is made of will not affect HP/TQ at any rev or in almost any way. Really the only difference is strength of the block. CGI is more resistant than aluminium but is just as strong. It is also a relatively new technology in engines. Obviously these engines were designed for Turbos, they are brand new, but in the end the 3.5 or 5.0 will be more reliable and have much much more potential than the 2.7. Yes the Coyote is a Modular 4v and loves to rev, it is still Proven to be able to make 1000+ HP reliably. Something the 2.7 can only dream of even getting close to.
Jared B please re read what I said. Lower revs consistently=longevity. Coupled with the more resistant material of the block may lead to a longer life span than the 5.0L. Personally, I dont trust an all aluminum V8 block.. there is a reason HD pickup gasser motors last longer.
Great content brother! Would be super dope to see how older trucks stack up like the trailblazer ss, silverado ss, lightning etc. Keep up the great vids, homies.
Strange, in the last F150 even the 2.7 could beat the Coyote. Still I'll always back the Coyote, its cheaper, more reliable, easier to work on and less to maintain. Just a simple tune will make it put down as much torque as the 3.5. Not to mention you can always boost the Coyote, and it will always sound better
Ram Runner I think for a reasonable dollar to dollar comparison the EB would still come out ahead. How much is the cheapest supercharger kit for the Coyote, $5-7k? Nearly every owner stops short of that. Up to that point I think the EB has the advantage, though my preference still falls towards the 5.0. If I needed more, that money would go into a 3/4 ton.
Alan Bowers well if you take into consideration the up charge for the ecoboost it’s really not all that bad. And sorry man no way even a heavily tuned eco could run with a supercharged 5.0. Especially when u wanna look at a stock eco pushing well over ten pounds of boost. Just 5 pounds of boost to that v8 and the game is over. I have a single cab short bed hemi ram with 8 speed/3.92 gears bone stock I ran 13.8 sec. fully bolted still Na best run of 12.76 sec. can’t wait for my some forced induction:) also take into consideration how many problems the eco has had. Il take a v8 anyday. Push come to shove that v8 will make way more power then the eco could ever handle
I’ve test drove the older 3.5 ecoboost and was really impressed by it. Now the 2nd generation ecoboost with the 10 speed behind it is a whole new animal. Personally I chose to go with the 2.7 ecoboost because I rarely tow, make a long commute to work, and it was designed to be turbocharged from the get go. So far I’m impressed with how quick it is compared to my 2014 ram. It feels faster than the ram did even after I tuned the Hemi. Plus it gets way better gas mileage. I was averaging 14 mpg on a 93 octane tune on the Hemi, and 20 combined on the ecoboost. The ecoboost still isn’t even broken in yet and I can tell the gas mileage is going to get even better.
See what I see is there is minimal performance difference between the V8 and the turbocharged V6. Thus raises several points, why would you buy a V6 when it will use almost the same amount of fuel the V8 will use any time you get on it or use it to tow? Why would you get a V6 that is touted as more beneficial because it's lighter than the V8? Why would you get the 3.5 when it already has the biggest modification you can do to get power out of an engine already done to it? (Forced induction) Lastly given that the V8 is naturally aspirated and has the potential for much more power output again why would you get the 3.5? Now if you are not going to drop that kind of money for whatever reason to modify the V8 to get more power I can understand why someone would get one and use a tuner much like diesel guys do to get a lot more power. That said again comparatively looking at it from the perspective that you're not keeping it stock it just doesn't seem like the best route to go. Even if you are keeping it stock you are adding more complexity with turbos and another potential failure point if you plan on keeping the truck long term.
Josh Leviton you’ve obviously never driven both there is a huge difference especially towing the 5.0 needs to scream to get the work done . With the new 10 speed auto the v8 is happier it used to bog between gears with the 6speed towing ... if you want torque get an ecoboost if you want great sound get the 5.0 . As for the ecoboost being maxed out , it’s in a mild state of tune! The raptor version is 450hp/510 ft lbs it’s a little more turned up... Hennessy’s ecoboosts make 600 HO on a stock engine , with a full warranty . A tune intake and exhaust on a 3.5 ecoboost easily adds 100hp ... same on a 5.0 only gains 30hp if your lucky so how is the ecoboost maxes out at 375/470? You don’t own one or know what your taking about . The only way for. 5.0 to compete with a tuned ecoboost is with a supercharger which is big money, then it will outperform a 3.5 with tune...
Nice try, there are more ways than just forced induction to get power out of an engine. Anyways, if you are towing all the time may I suggest buying a heavy duty truck that is built for that purpose instead of a light duty? I already stated that if you plan on leaving it stock the 3.5 is probably going to be a better choice and it would also be the better choice if you plan on doing mild modifications to it. That said the V8 is a far superior option if you are going to heavily modify it. This includes, ported and machined heads, forged crankshaft, lightweight I or H beam connecting rods, aluminum pistons, boring it out, stroking it, lighter valves, stiffer valve springs, camshafts, intake runners, throttle body, injectors, lightweight flywheel (or flexplate), headers/manifolds, supercharger or turbocharger(s), and realistically this is just a basic list. There is no replacement for displacement. I could touch nothing inside the engine outside of slapping some turbos on running on the same boost pressure as the 3.5 and still make more power. Dollar for dollar every mod you do to a V6 that I match on the V8 is still going to make more power. As I said earlier if you plan on leaving it stock and using it as light duty truck or only do mild modifications the 3.5 is the probably the better choice. If you are going to heavily modify your engine and do all the supporting modifications needed to generate and handle that power the V8 is the superior choice. If you want noise buy the V8. If you like V8's, buy the V8. If you think a traditional full sized American truck should come with a V8 as it mostly has again buy the V8. Reading comprehension is key along with leaving your bias at the door. All in all for the average owner in terms of longevity and overall performance across the widest categories I believe the V8 is the better option. But whatever. I haven't spent the past year in trade school to learn about these sort of things. Not once did I state not to get the V6. I only questioned the points they like to sell it on when in actuality as the video proves they are pretty closely matched.
Josh, you didn't mention the life expectancy of the two, providing the v8 fixed the chinesium/obama guided fudgefest of cam/valve timing sets that go bad by 110K at best
If you read you owners manual you can not run 87 octane and tow with the eco boost so if you tow much you have a higher fuel bill. My 16 5.0 has all the power I need.
Oh really, less oxygen? I thought higher altitude meant less atmospheric pressure. Man, Ive had it wrong this whole time!! Thanks for learnin' me a lesson Layton and Avery. I sure am glad you took time out of your busy day to spread those bits of knowledge!
93Cobra There are tons of ecoboosts well into the 200,000 mile mark. Have all these hardcore v8 American muscle guys over here butthurt because a v6 can tow better than their murcan v8 can
93Cobra a 5.3 LS will last longer than a 5.0 Coyote. Its not a brand war, just facts. Look at any article. I used to love Ford but theyre just too unreliable now days. Its not just the trucks either. The Focus RS is already notorious for the engine locking with as few as 20,000 miles.
i’ve worked on, an built both engines i’ll put it this way the first pair of turbos ford pays for and the second pair are on you unless you have an after market warranty, the 5.0 liter mite need a water pump or some coolant hoses at about 50,000 i turn wrench’s for ford
School Of Hard Knocks I was a master tech for a decade and agree 100%. In my experience it is wise to avoid anything with a turbo unless it is a HD class diesel. I worked on a few ecoboost F150's and for one they are a pain to work on and second they always seem to have some issue with the turbo system be it the turbos themselves or the intercooler/plumbing.
mopar0IIII0jeep , yes sir. i’ve been maken motors crank, and what i call waken up bones since i could see over a hood i have a gift i’m told i think it’s mostly common sense, but hell these days that is a gift
Drag racing 4wd pickup trucks? At least these newer trucks have decent power. I remember a 1995 F150 5.0l truck I had, the truck would dog to cruise at 70mph on the highway.
I have a 2013 EcoBoost FX2 Sport. Put a MPT Custom Performance Race tune in it, and it is an absolute beast. I can break traction on dry roads, TC on, going 60 mph. I've done little road races with several different vehicles and haven't lost yet. I've outrun dodges, diesels, chevys, a Camaro, and kept up with a Corvette while I had 300+lbs in the back. The Corvette though was probably a 2003-2007 model year. I don't really know I don't pay much attention to the vet. Anyway, it's a monster of a truck. The gains put me at around 430hp and 550tq.
5.0 for me. I work on these things for a living, rather i work on ecoboosts for a living. They dont have any big issues, but the coyotes just get oil changes and back they go. I honestly hope the new diesel puts a dent in EB sales. The EB is just trying to be a gas and a diesel at the same time, and it just doesn't work like that.
I used to own one bad ass 5liter mustang. Now I own a expedition EcoBoost and I gotta admit that the EcoBoost is a sleeper. If Ford would put that EcoBoost technology with a 5.0 instead of a supercharger it would make a unstoppable beast of a machine. Hey Ford, let me know!
Why do so many people keep asking for a turbo charged 5.0 Liter? It makes no sense. Often it's the same people that diss a downsized turbo and spreads turbo hatred throughout the internet that gets all excited about a V8 turbo. The whole strategy behind a downsized turbo or super charger is that when the engine is not under great load, the turbo(s)/super charger will not spool or boost power and add fuel, and then it has the advantage of a smaller displacement engine for better mpg; but turbo charging can actually serve only to hurt the mpg of any gas-powered engine at any given displacement or cylinder arrangement. So for instance, a 3.5L V6 that is naturally-aspired would actually get better mpg than a turbo charged 3.5L V6 in a pickup truck; but it would not have the performance of the capability or torque needed for a hard-working 1/2-ton. So the strategy is to find a balance where the turbo charged, downsized engine can do the work necessary when needed and get better mpg when not needed. If you plant an engine in a pickup too small, the turbo will spool even in normal driving and there will be no advantage; maybe even worse, which is what I foresee with the new Ranger and the 2.3L and is the reason why those with the 2.7L Ecoboost in a Lariat and 20" rims get average mpg whereas my near base truck with the 2.7L can get right in the meat of the EPA estimate. On the other hand, if you plant a charged engine in a pickup that's too large, then there would be no engine displacement advantage and so it could not return better mpg under any circumstance. So if you turbo charge a V8; plant it in a half-ton pickup, then it is not possible to get better mpg; it would likely do much worse. They're trying to do better; not worse. The Coyote is already allowing for the most capable pickup in the industry for payload and near the top for towing, it's already competitive with respect to horsepower and torque with other brands, especially when considering power-to-weight ratio; it's the V8 mpg leader; and so why would you need more than what it's already producing for performance and capability. Like I said, unless you're buying stock vehicles to support your drag racing hobby; you're trying to get 3/4-ton duty out of a 1/2-ton, then I don't understand why people would ask for a turbo charged V8 in a pickup truck.
I still want the V8 in my truck! To many ducts on the ecoboost, plus if you ask any Ford mechanic which one is better and more reliable they will tell you the 5.0 is the winner.
I don't care about racing, hauling, acceleration etc. I just want a daily driver that I'll be able to make my last truck with as little issues as possible. Would the 5.0 be my better option?
Brady Stanga the standard 3.5 EB F150 is faster than the Raptor though. Raptor has 35’s and lift to move and it doesn’t make up for it, even with the Raptor EB engine. It’s been done before and the F150 beat the Raptor.
Tony Man (I am very biased towards GM as I own a 2011 Silverado LTZ 6 2) The 6.2 would smash the ecoboost on take off but I'm pretty sure the ecoboost would catch up on account of the ford being very light it would be an interesting race
Andrew Moore Actually they are almost dead even from 0 to 60 but up top the Chevy has the advantage. Car and driver has tested this already. But if they are up north way above sea level the turbo had the advantage
Andrew, I think it's awesome you're a GM fan I am sure there is good reason. Forget GM vs. Ford for one second this is turbo vs. NA engine. The turbo has more torque down low, the NA engine has more horsepower up high. So what happens is the turbo takes the NA engine off the line and the na engine catches up. And there are video's out there that show this is what happens.
Holy Cow... I didn't think the 5.0 would be that fast! I thought the 3.5 would smoke the regular aspirated engine! But that was NOT the case at all. Knowing that I would choose the 5.0 so I could put on an after-market exhaust to get a nice sound, because I wouldn't be sacrificing that much in power. Nice test guys. Thanks.
For some reason, the newer 5.0L is much more powerful. Another channels review dynoed a stock '15 and an '18 5.0L. The '18 made 88 more horsepower and 100 more torque to the wheels. Don't know if it's the 10 speed transmission, but that is a freakin' huge difference. Found it: ruclips.net/video/NBBw1N1_3aQ/видео.htmlm13s
The 5.0l is certainly quicker then before. Put some weight on these trucks and watch the torque advantage of the eco boost further leave the 5.0. The first race was a joke. The ones following were much more accurate to the quickness of these trucks empty.
Jay P still surprising that the coyote did as well as it did. Whatever revisions they made to it for the ‘18 MY did wonders (direct and port injection were part of that I think), not to mention the benefit of a transmission that could allow it to stay in power better gear to gear.
Alan Bowers I am with ya man. The 18’ changes were excellent for 5.0L. Glad to see it get some love. I knew the 10 speed would be a game changer for that high reving engine. The new inject system combined with that real nicely.
I have a 2012 f150 with a 5.0. I had the door painted, so I got a rental truck. It was a new Ecoboost f150. Not only was my truck much quicker. It has much better fuel economy. 19.5mph vs 16.7mph. I believe the v8 is the way to go.

Driver was the biggest reason for these results
Idk what it is about the Ford's 5.0 but damn by far my favorite engine sound, power, and reliability wise.
Where I live eco-boost will stomp the 5.0. Live at 7560ft and the mountain passes are even higher. Living at altitude the ecoboost is the only way to go!!
Both engines are great but I would prefer the 5.0 over the 3.5
Alex Cardona what?!? You don't like turbo lag?
Even the Ford Dealer Techs prefer the 5.0.
I can’t speak for this particular year truck but most of the F150 eco-boost has better towing power and pounds of torque.
After watching this I’m definitely liking the 5.0 more. I thought that there was a fairly large performance differential between the two, but maybe the update and new transmission helped unlock the Coyote’s potential. 3.5 is a great motor too, but I prefer natural aspiration and relative simplicity.
If you're doing a lot of towing, get the 3.5. If you do occasional towing, the 5.0 is still plenty stout, plus it just sounds so much better.
I may have missed it in the video, just curious, what are the rear end ratios in the trucks? Do they both have the same? Thanks.

In Sport mode its an absolute joy and reminds you of a super car with the exhaust opening up and going through the gears hats off to Ford for that mode.
Would still choose the 5.0 over the ecoboost.
More reliable and sounds good.
you be right, the tubo engine is cool but the V8 sound is key.
Bill Peirce where are your source as to it's more "reliable"?
Bryan Milligan
Carcomplaints.com
Thousands of complaints about the ecoboost, non about the 5.0
5.0 is much more reliable then the new eco boost it's been around a hell of alot longer problems have been fixed the new eco boost I have heard countless problem with the turbos and over heating issues so 5.0 all the way that and the sound of a V8 is amazing
Bill Peirce ...both are bulletproof! Excellent overengineered designs by Ford.
Robert Franklin well said.
That's my experience too. 18+ mpg towing cars on open trailer with a uhaul f150 with 5.0L about 2 years ago converted my bowtie buddy to the blue oval (partly)
Good to hear real world opinion
Robert Franklin unless you were tuned and deleted there's no way you were getting 17 probably more like 12-13 stock these 6.7s see 15-17 empty average coming from someone who's owned a 6.7 from 19 to 23 same truck not a single problem and would never for a thing in the world trade it from a stupid ecboost or silly 5.0
Robert Franklin I do like the 5.0 power tho but my lightning probably has more 🤔
Finally a straightforward comparison
TheReal NateDogg wrong. Different drivers. What octane fuel in each? What optional equipment on each (weight)? What rear end differential gearing in each?
Just bought a 2017 XLT Roush with the V8 and that thing rides and runs faster and better than the two Sierra 1500’s I had before it. It’s scary fast, and sounds like a beast with that Roush Cat Back, I love it !
I love my 3.5 eb and peoples reactions when they get stomped by a full size truck with a 6cyl.
My dad has a 2015 5.0 and it puts a smile on my face every time I bury the pedal to the floor
someone should do a 3.5 vs 5.0 dyno test to see how much horsepower they actually make
I wanna see how the 6.2 ecotech silverado/sierra compete with the 5.0 or the 3.5ecoboost.
The v6 did so much better than I had thought. I'd pick the 5.0 all day every day though as that truck will be on the road for a very long time.
I thought the 5.0 would get absolutely spanked considering the low end torque advantage of the ecoboost. Glad to see I was wrong! V8 all the way!
Spencer Leeper I agree everyone says torque is what truly matters but the 5.0 was every bit as fast.
ecoboosts are heavily tq limited with he load to tq and inverse tq to load tables. You can tune both trucks, but the 3.5 will win all day every day by "a lot" The 3.5 is a tq monster, but it's held back by ECU as I mentioned. Really wish you could get t he 2nd gen 3.5 in the mustang as an option.
driver of the ecoboost was apparently unfamiliar with starting out in the proper gear...
The coyote has lots of top end. When you rev it out, that's when it shines. The ecoboost has little top end compared to the Coyote. If the Coyote had Mustang cam profiles. The Coyote would spank the ecoboost all day.
With 10 frickin gears, the torque doesn't matter all that much..
I owned a 2016 with 5.0 and now i own the 3.5 twin. 5.0 gets atleast 250-280 km more per tank of gas same size tanks.. That alone makes me miss the 5.0.
What differentials were in each truck, some have 3:31, or 3:55 and rarely in base models a 3:73 diff.
I drove a '17 5.0 xlt pickup and man let me tell you something, that thing moves!! The low end pull is crazy!
Put 100,000 miles on both of them and let's see which one is more dependable and not falling apart. My money's on the V8!
i work at a ford dealership and everyday i drive these trucks and i prefer the 3.5, the 5.0 doesn’t seem as stout and peppy. if anything i prefer the previous model 5.4, those are where it’s at
Suprized ecoboost did not pull harder on 5.0.
Benefit of ecoboost - throw just a tune and you have extra 100tq and 80hp.
Benefit of v8 - sound.
Round 1 was inconclusive ... engine was still cold and Turbo wasn't able to spool normally, (based on all the steam that blew out from the exhaust on take off)
So which one is most likely to last 400k miles?
they are very similar,so 3.5 is better.makes the same "drinking" less and higher torque. no doubt i prefer 3.5 . and before saying "tune the 5.0",don t forget about durability and fuel spending/consumption
I like these videos but Start incorporating their 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times.
“Horsepower sells cars, BUT torque wins races” I could never get that line out of my head when I’m looking for a car.
Did the driver of the ecoboost brakeboost prior to any of the launches? If not this is an integral part of any successful turbo vehicle launch/race.
TDCtactical does it matter? 3.5 sucks enough said.
What gearing does each truck have in the rear end ? 3.73 in a 5.0 vs 3.31 in 3.5eco would cause this result in the video
Axle ratios?
You mean gearing? axel would do nothing.
Ratio means gearing
ubernoob77 Axle ratio means a whole lot. If one had a 3:30 and the other a 3:73, the latter would have the drag strip advantage.
ubernoob77 uhm... I've had a 5.4 triton with 3.73 that beat 5.0s with 3.30 so I think the axle ratio matters in a drag race
ubernoob77 , thats a very appropriate name.
I could be wrong, but if actually using it for towing and hauling wouldn’t that V6 have a lot less life? Isn’t that motor working twice as hard to make very similar HP?
Should do with trailers too
Jay P You’d see the 5.0 get it’s azz handed to it....the only way the 5.0 can keep up is to be running 1500-2000 rpm higher at the same road speeds ....
Jay P they'll both be on trailers to the repair shop soon lol
Jay P 5.0 would win
Oak Lumberjack lol
The most important question is what's the gear ratios of both trucks.
Seems like the 3.5 L EcoBoost struggled for traction a lot more than the 5.0 on lunch... And if that was a factor?
Great racing. I'm surprised that 5.0 was so fast. I've got a 3.5 and love the power. It was not a very expensive upgrade and worth it for towing. Can't beat the low end torque
the ecoboost just pulls so hard. i like the 5.0 and would probably buy it but i must admit that ecoboost is awsome
R Green I agree.
Why would you not test the 2wd mode again? Tests are skewed, you need to time each individually to get accurate results. Was the turbo spooled the last time? That was a pretty quick jump compared to the other times
Man, if they did the exact same ecoboost-type stuff but with a small V8, that would probably make them even more the #1 selling truck. Why don't they?
joel I’ve thought that for quite some time... Problem is, you can’t make it faster than the Mustang... The first Turbo 4cyl Mustang back in the 80s had to be detuned to not over take their golden boy 5.0
See what I’m sayin? It’s a shame tho, maybe one day we will see that drivetrain setup in the Mustang first. Also price point, maybe they aren’t quite there technology wise to make it, and offer it, at a competitive price point yet.
Have replaced two ecoboost engines that have blown up. Have not had to replace a new 5.0 yet.
Adamm Jarvis you 3.5 guys are all the same! Lol j.k.
I just wonder why Ford won't apply Ecoboost Technology to the 5.0. Would it be too much power ?
Do 2018 f150 5.0 vs Ram 5.7 or GM 6.2! Or both haha thank you!
Been thinking about the 2.7l sure its not as raw as the 3.5l but itll prolly hold up well over a long time.
I hate the lag from the eco boost (driven for 3 years). I will be getting the V8 in my next truck.
Great content brother! Would be super dope to see how older trucks stack up like the trailblazer ss, silverado ss, lightning etc. Keep up the great vids, homies.
IDC what the hp is, I could never see myself in a v6 full-size pick-up, or 4 banger
Did they both have the same rear end ratio and what were they?
Strange, in the last F150 even the 2.7 could beat the Coyote. Still I'll always back the Coyote, its cheaper, more reliable, easier to work on and less to maintain. Just a simple tune will make it put down as much torque as the 3.5. Not to mention you can always boost the Coyote, and it will always sound better
The 1 mpg you save with the ecoboost will pay for the repair cost after 150,000 miles if you're worried about the reliability of the Ecoboost.
5.0 for me, a quick tune and its just as fast as the ecoboost.
Skitter302 And the if EcoBoost gets a tune the 5.0 won't be able to catch it. Believe me, I know. 5Star tuning has an awesome tune for the 3.5.
atvtinker01 and if the 5.0 gets any amount of boost it would murder a ecoboost
Ram Runner I think you missed what I said...
So which one will tow better?
What rear ends where in both trucks??
5.0 all day .no one races in 4 wheel drive i am sure the fastest time was the first race.and in the long run it is more dependable and cheaper to fix.
I thought the Eco would be a little bit further than that.
(Forced induction)
Lastly given that the V8 is naturally aspirated and has the potential for much more power output again why would you get the 3.5?
Josh Leviton v6 blah blah blah tune blah blah blah v8 noise blah blah blah more problems with turbo blah blah blah stock stock stock tow tow tow. Oh please who the hell cares
Clearly you do in some capacity if you felt the need to retort.
Thanks for the video guys.
Nice to see an apples to apples comparison.
Do you know which differential ratio each truck was running?
Do a gas comparison pulling a heavy load ,??
I live at 6k feet over sea level. I bet the ecoboost would smoke it here.
Rich Farfugnuven that was the deciding factor for me. We live at 5,000' and it's all up from here. Turbos definitely help with altitude.
No way turbos suck at higher altitude. Not enough air.
Yeah turbos get worse at higher altitudes! Airs thinner less oxygen equals less HP !
Oh really, less oxygen? I thought higher altitude meant less atmospheric pressure. Man, Ive had it wrong this whole time!! Thanks for learnin' me a lesson Layton and Avery. I sure am glad you took time out of your busy day to spread those bits of knowledge!
Layton McDaniel idiot
So what's the difference in price?
I'll take the 5.0 over the Eco-boost junk any day, that 5.0 will out last any Eco-boost engine
93Cobra There are tons of ecoboosts well into the 200,000 mile mark. Have all these hardcore v8 American muscle guys over here butthurt because a v6 can tow better than their murcan v8 can
93Cobra you are absolutely right!
I bet you drive an old 4 banger, got to love the butt-hurt lol
93Cobra a 5.3 LS will last longer than a 5.0 Coyote. Its not a brand war, just facts. Look at any article. I used to love Ford but theyre just too unreliable now days. Its not just the trucks either. The Focus RS is already notorious for the engine locking with as few as 20,000 miles.
93Cobra yea that's cool bro a small 302 cubic inch v8.... real cool.. the ecoboost will always be better brew sry bout it.
What about the 2.7EB vs. the 5.0 and/or 3.5EB?
V8 its my favorite
Now after seeing how close they are, are you really going to spend the extra 2k for that V6? Because that’s how much more it is than a V8
i’ve worked on, an built both engines i’ll put it this way the first pair of turbos ford pays for and the second pair are on you unless you have an after market warranty, the 5.0 liter mite need a water pump or some coolant hoses at about 50,000 i turn wrench’s for ford
Might’ve missed this but same gear ratios?
Drag racing 4wd pickup trucks? At least these newer trucks have decent power. I remember a 1995 F150 5.0l truck I had, the truck would dog to cruise at 70mph on the highway.
What engine will last longer ( before rebuilding)?
What gear ratio does each truck have?
Great vids. Where is the race between f150 eb vsram, tundra, Chevy?
We would like to do that matchup but we need to have the right vehicles available to use. Hopefully soon
Why not put a 10 speed 2.7 Ecoboost into the mix so it can embarrass BOTH of the trucks shown above.
LOL that's not even the the Mack Daddy EcoBoost 3.5 I'm talking Raptor 3.5 , 450 horsepower 510 torque.
Brady Stanga the standard 3.5 EB F150 is faster than the Raptor though. Raptor has 35’s and lift to move and it doesn’t make up for it, even with the Raptor EB engine. It’s been done before and the F150 beat the Raptor.
atmospheric82 are you referring to the high output EB in the 2017 and 18?
Wonder if man can take 3.5 eco boost put in a 1997 f150 4x4??
Great video please do the GM 6.2 vs the ford 3.5
Tony Man (I am very biased towards GM as I own a 2011 Silverado LTZ 6 2) The 6.2 would smash the ecoboost on take off but I'm pretty sure the ecoboost would catch up on account of the ford being very light it would be an interesting race
Andrew Moore Actually they are almost dead even from 0 to 60 but up top the Chevy has the advantage. Car and driver has tested this already. But if they are up north way above sea level the turbo had the advantage
I hate that GM only puts the 6.2l in top level trim's. The ecoboost can be found in an XL.
And there are video's out there that show this is what happens.
darkjedi351 TFL are at altitude where the turbos shine.
So the 5.0 smokes it in 2wd so you put them in 4wd and race again. What is the point of this? 4wd slows the 5. 0 down more then the ecoboost?

The EcoBoost was cold the 1st race. Just look at the exhaust. These guys are stupid. I'd NEVER buy a car from them.
Who does sport mode for pick ups?
Lotta wheel spin on 1st race on the ecoboost.
Is the slo motion a joke?
I have a 2012 f150 with a 5.0. I had the door painted, so I got a rental truck. It was a new Ecoboost f150. Not only was my truck much quicker. It has much better fuel economy. 19.5mph vs 16.7mph. I believe the v8 is the way to go.
I would like to see the ford f150 2.7l vs chevy 1500 5.3l both 2018's same gears and setup.
Well in 15 years when i can afford that truck hopefully it still runs that good and isnt all rusted out. :)
