I love how the door monitor looked bored at the beginning, staring out the window mostly. By the end of the solo, she was smiling and put down her clipboard to applaud him. If you can appeal to the door monitor, I tip my hat to you, sir! Absolute quality, in every meaning of the word. Bravo!
At Drums Along The Rockies (2011) my friends and I only watched one group in the lot because we clearly wanted to see shows. We watched the obvious #1 lot show in Corps. Well, their warm ups are only 4 measures long and they just rep them continuously. I tell you this because after every single rep of their triplet warm up the center tenor, Matt, yelled out random words like "pancake" and "giraffe". Maybe they're code for something.... or maybe not.
@jub2k1 It was like 105 out that day. Most everyone played, loaded the truck, then ran off to the mall to watch a movie and eat. Or just wander around San Antonio and get lost.
Great composition, great tone quality, great technique, great chops, great performance...Matt Penland ladies and gentlemen!

This is absolutely amazing
one of the best tenor players to ever grace the earth lol
ive never noticed, but the lady in the green in the back, gets SO happy after he pulls the traditional and the backsticking stuff haha. I love it
This dude played the phantom 2010 break like 4 times in this
Goes to show how much that break never made sense but was so the best
only person to end a quad solo on drum 3, what a genius.
What a boss. He did my high school tenor auditions this year but i didn't know who he was then..
Triple backsticking on tenors, you are now my favorite tenor player. along with the traditional grip.
it was tuned for smooth criminal....
Pretty cool! (I especially like 1:40 on spock.)
This was an amazing performance. Thanks, Mattie!
Yeah !!! One of the best musically constructed solos I have seen ! Kudos my friend, you kept me watching the entire time :-)
hmm 4 dislikes,
4 people must have had their Headphones on max when he starting to play
Not to post an ignorant comment but he is probably one of the best tenor players I have ever seen.
My drum instructor taught this man in high school. Like a bawss.
those are some monster chops
Greatest I&E solo ever .
oh definitely my favorite i&e tenor solo since the jackson dynasty.
I love the pit in the window trying to watch lol awesome
how many times does he have to play the 2010 tenor break? haha
This is the best tenor solo I've ever seen... Brb, gonna go give up drumming.
loving the opening lick is just phantoms quad solo from 2010...well played sir
I wasn't expecting this! Amazing! Lol and I love the guy screaming in the audience.

He plays variations on the tenor solo like 3 times.
holyfuckingjesuschristgod'smother.... That has to be the greatest tenor I&E since Bats out of Hell. Good Friken God.
The three that disliked this; Bill Bachman, Scott Johnson, and me, because he has more skill in his carpal tunnel than I do in my entire being :(
lol I was excited to watch this part, but then I forgot what time to look for because my brain exploded.
@ 3:14 i lost it. thats fucking crazy. thats like 8 notes a second. fucking insane
This was amazing.
This guy is a legend
holy crap, this dude sweeps like a janitor....
fuck that was crazy
in a good way
definitely best i&e setting.
The opening lick is the break from phantom 2010
Man the echo rumbles the whole damn building haha
I'd love to see what this looks like on a piece of sheet music
the michael jackson quote was very cool
damnit my brains are all over the wall......thanks Matt
The JONZ is back!
@jub2k1 It was like 105 out that day. Most everyone played, loaded the truck, then ran off to the mall to watch a movie and eat. Or just wander around San Antonio and get lost.
i am much better but i am not going to post my solo because it will make him feel bad
lel k
like times a million times a million...times another million
Hence the term, "Champion".
See those? They're called "Mallets". Some men use them to drum on multi-tenors with.
That's pretty standard tenor tuning for Paul Rennick, regardless of year.
@Jdrummzz He was on Phantoms line that year
Best quad champion EVER!
@doublebassheeltoe I caught that too. It's just the structure of the spree, hella filled in with reefed beats. pretty cool
@zildjian1884 Could I see the sheet music?
@jub2k1 He was on the road with DCI - living on a bus - I doubt he had one in his back pack :-)
The piece is called Geek
1:17 ... and not a single rim to be heard ... AMAZING!!!!
HAHAHA did anyone else realize the beginning was smooth criminal?!?!
I give up playing drums forever. i cant compete with this -_-
Wow, that 1080p came at a price in audio quality 😂
Dope, was that Pulse's Spree at 1:40?
Wow what skill honor to watch
i love the mj stuff the king would be proud
SCV was so cool with their t shirts and jeens
umbeliveble!
I was already on my knees the first 1:30 seconds he played...
This is my friend's cousin, and HE friended ME on facebook. Waddup?
I lost my shit when he did the casey claw, that was just too fuckin much, man.
How do you dislike this?
I marched with him in high school...
A lot of this is from his pasic I and e
Tyrone Biggs would just say "Goddamn!!!"
Heard that Pulse Spree in there haha.
@masterdrummer19
No, Keelan won, however that dosen't change the fact that Johnathan Leal is a great drummer
he writes for phantom right?
No rims were harmed in the making of this solo.
💖🤔😇😂😇🤔💖
homage to Phantom 2010 at 1:33
@bsoeban He didn't really steal it since he was on that line.
Why did he keep playing the tenor solo from phantom 2010
This has to be one of the worst places to hold an I&E competition. But Penland is awesome, so that makes up for it.
His hands were Kung-Fu fighting!!!! They were as fast as lightning... 0_o
sweet solo!!!!!!!!!!!
Anybody know what sticks/mallets he's using?
“RIP headphone users,”
-me, a headphone user
Bill Bachman's arrangement lick at 1:40 on spock
THE CLAW!!!
1:18 I drooled a little
was he playing smooth criminal??
guess where he marched last year
:16 oh "deviation" that sounds pretty coo- OH MY GOD NECROMORPHS
Didnt know Alan from 2 and a half men marched tenors for SCV.
He opened with Phantom's 2010 quad solo...hm.
so...... Tim Jackson, who??
I imagine if the greek gods played percussion, it sounded a lot like this.
Hit a rim at 0:47... Even though he meant to. I need to find something to make me feel better...
yeah, uh.. My mind was just freakin' blown...
first 30 seconds is just a smack in the face for phantom
i think i just crapped my pants
Why couldn't they play outside? the indoor echoes so much it makes good drum playing sound like a mindfuck of intensity D:
your telling me thats not bill bachman? oh
annie are you ok?
@vicfirthdrummer95
you should check out bill bachman
S'all good man.
