Satisfying to the end! I must say that I always enjoy watching the way you react to whatever you are listening to and watching, Tre. When the subject turns to the loss of Selena at such a young age, and you say, "I'm upset," I can feel your loss. Your whole body shows the depth of that loss for you. I believe that what accounts for much of the attraction so many of us feel for Selena comes from how easy it is to imagine what she could have become, and therefore what she would have given us. The loss is felt deep within our imagination. As the famous lines of the poet John Greenleaf Whittier say, "For of all sad words of tongue or pen, /The saddest are these: /'It might have been!'" Kathie and you both comment on the way Selena, the back up singers, and the band work together. They act as one. No one is trying to upstage anyone else. They are all in harmony as one. I agree, yet I find that this is true of just about all Latin performers. Yes, Selena is the one out front; however, she's not alone: like family, they all contrive to produce a unified effect, an organic experience for all of us. I loved yalls reaction to the Queen! Thank you for doing this. Lets not forget Selena did this whole set without ever stopping for a sip of water. She was singing 100% live without background vocals, Without an in ear monitor, she was singing live while hearing a 5-10 second delay from the speakers. I believe there's actual footage from her previous astrodome where you can hear the delay in the venue. I don't know how she stayed in tune without going off key. Selena was such an angel. She always stayed behind to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. She had traditional family values and was surprisingly conservative (with love of course) lol. She wanted her own family one day and always told young children to stay in school and stay out of trouble and work hard. I was ten years old when she died and was riding home on the school bus when it was broadcast all over the country and they releasing “dreamin of you” in her honor. Now I can’t listen to that song without crying. She BFF as a statue if you in havent been there called “over look of the flower” along the bay google it for pics.

I was at this concert in 1995 a sold out Go Tejano Night at Rodeo Houston. She performed at the Rodeo 3 years in a Row 1993, 1994, 1995 and it was her dream to perform at the Astrodome as she knew Elvis and Michael Jackson had performed there.
They have yet to release the full concert of her 93’ and 94’ performance. I enjoyed the reactions from the both of you. I’m a big Selena fan myself, I was almost 2 years when she passed.

What is so amazing about Selena's performances is she always looked like a little girl singing in a bedroom with a brush in her hand... she looks so natural, comfortable and genuinely having fun. Not only is she singing live vocals but you don't even see her drinking water, or having super complex choreographed dance routines, or seeing an industrial fan blowing her hair everywhere that you see now. Like, I get why artists like Beyonce use those, helps keep the artist cool and prevents them from passing out from the stage lights lol (I'm not hating, promise) but it's those little things that makes her performances so raw & real. She was an absolute queen, commanding the stage. 💜

First time watching you reacting and 1st time seeing a reaction of her concert in full, so worth it. Fyi, the series has more facts than the movie. Before winning her Grammy, she had won many Tejano Music Awards in different categories including best female artist of the year. The story behind Amor Prohibido was confirmed by sister Suzette in an interview. Husband Chris has also finally been interviewed after many years of not opening up. Also, it is very normal for Tejano bands to perform at weddings and 15's and local festivals, etc. and walk around amongst the crowd very down to earth. Thanks for your part in keeping her alive.

The white rose being thrown on stage during the posthumous song performance in the movie could have been a reference to the flowers she had at her funeral. Mourners placed them on the casket as they were her favourite. She truly was a supernova in music and her life and she's stayed so modern and current. She was truly ahead of her time in music, attitude and fashion. I don't believe in reincarnation unless it's for people like her, she deserves that moment to live a full life doing what she couldn't in 23 short years.

If you haven’t seen the Netflix series. You guys should react to it! It tells the story of her career much more accurately than the movie. But the controversy is how not so accurate the story of her personal life is told in the series. But I feel like the series tells a lot of lore and it shows you her 80’s era that the movie skipped. It’s a cool watch if you want to know more about her career.

Wonderful! You two work so well together. I am writing these comments at about the half-way point. After the second half, I'll no doubt make more comments. First of all, your multiple use of the word iconic. Here's the rule I follow and used to teach my English students: If a word is the right word to express the meaning you have in mind, use it as many times as is warranted; don't go looking for synonyms simply to avoid repeating a word. So far, it seems to me that iconic is the right word to use where you have used it. If one is honest and insightful, Selena is iconic, and all that emanates uniquely from her is iconic of her. No apologies needed. Period. Second, as to how Selena would have been were she still alive. Two words: Celia Cruz. And lastly, for now, that was an excellent observation Katie made: Selena is so at home on stage. Having lived and worked with Latinos since 1964, I have concluded that central to Latino culture is performance. A Latin child is not brought up to be good so much as to act with beauty. The mother does not tell the child "don't be bad" but rather "don't be ugly; carry yourself with beauty." Selina was the epitome of beauty in action. I would say that she took what was natural in her culture and perfected it. She became an icon.

There's a principle in philosophy that says "morals follow being." Thus acting human follows being human." There are various ways to judge whether someone is acting human; that is, following the moral order for right human behavior. Different cultures use different criteria. For most Anglos, it's a moral code that dictates right behavior; for Latinos, it's primarily beauty. I also agree with you: that it's much easier to explain beautiful and ugly to a kid than to explain right and wrong!

Thanks for the time. indeed I agree that this type of "aesthetical " approach to teaching works mostly well on Latin upbringings as most families I knew don't have time/knowledge/interest to discuss these topics with the younger or to challenge the things they learned during their own childhoods, and that is the negative of this approach, as your moral systems are built by comparison and judgment of your immediate social circle, the individual can end up being limited to/by them and be isolated from ways of living external to his/hers culture... Latin conservative families tend to judge strongly the system of values of other communities!

In the movie where the white rose was thrown was dreams Selena had because in some religions if someone throws you a white rose and you don’t catch it means that you’re gonna pass soon, Selena kept having those dreams. Also at the end of this concert where she is riding the carriage and waving to every you can see that someone threw a white rose at her and she didn’t catch it…
This show was recorded for a TV special that was going to air soon on national TV. Because of her death, they decided to release it as a posthumous tribute. Since they already had the footage, they decided to release it on DVD 2 years later. They rerecorded the music and edited out some of the monologue where she thanks another Tejano artist who performed earlier that evening on the same stage. It is amazing Tre how you said she seemed like a Disney princess because for some time after her death, her family and Disney were in talks to do a project, which was never revealed. That project fell through for some reason. Nobody knows what they were going to do. Her family is very protective over what is created with her name and image. So, everything you see out there about her is fully supported by the family. Of course theres a lot of bootlegged material (like shirts and books) but the majority of things are sealed by her company/family. I saw her in concert twice here in TEXAS.

The ending of this concert always gets me choked up. It was her last televised concert and a month later on March 31st 1995, she was gone forever.

The white rose being thrown on stage during the posthumous song performance in the movie could have been a reference to the flowers she had at her funeral. Mourners placed them on the casket as they were her favourite. She truly was a supernova in music and her life and she's stayed so modern and current. She was truly ahead of her time in music, attitude and fashion. I don't believe in reincarnation unless it's for people like her, she deserves that moment to live a full life doing what she couldn't in 23 short years.

If you haven’t seen the Netflix series. You guys should react to it! It tells the story of her career much more accurately than the movie. But the controversy is how not so accurate the story of her personal life is told in the series. But I feel like the series tells a lot of lore and it shows you her 80’s era that the movie skipped. It’s a cool watch if you want to know more about her career.

Wonderful! You two work so well together. I am writing these comments at about the half-way point. After the second half, I'll no doubt make more comments. First of all, your multiple use of the word iconic. Here's the rule I follow and used to teach my English students: If a word is the right word to express the meaning you have in mind, use it as many times as is warranted; don't go looking for synonyms simply to avoid repeating a word. So far, it seems to me that iconic is the right word to use where you have used it. If one is honest and insightful, Selena is iconic, and all that emanates uniquely from her is iconic of her. No apologies needed. Period. Second, as to how Selena would have been were she still alive. Two words: Celia Cruz. And lastly, for now, that was an excellent observation Katie made: Selena is so at home on stage. Having lived and worked with Latinos since 1964, I have concluded that central to Latino culture is performance. A Latin child is not brought up to be good so much as to act with beauty. The mother does not tell the child "don't be bad" but rather "don't be ugly; carry yourself with beauty." Selina was the epitome of beauty in action. I would say that she took what was natural in her culture and perfected it. She became an icon.
Interesting observation, George... Its true that in a lot of latin homes ( including mine), they will correct by saying "No hagas eso, se ve feo" ("Dont do that, It looks ugly / Its disgusting"), though I must say there is a level of morals: as you will be judged because what you are doing is wrong and everybody knows it... but you, apparently.
So interesting that indeed our first approach to morals is like that. I guess it's much easier than explaining philosophy to a kid!
@@PinguinoLetal Thanks for such a close read of my comments. I am in complete agreement that morals play a central part in the upbringing of Latin children. There's a principle in philosophy that says "morals follow being." Thus acting human follows being human." There are various ways to judge whether someone is acting human; that is, following the moral order for right human behavior. Different cultures use different criteria. For most Anglos, it's a moral code that dictates right behavior; for Latinos, it's primarily beauty. I also agree with you: that it's much easier to explain beautiful and ugly to a kid than to explain right and wrong!

indeed I agree that this type of "aesthetical " approach to teaching works mostly well on Latin upbringings as most families I knew don't have time/knowledge/interest to discuss these topics with the younger or to challenge the things they learned during their own childhoods, and that is the negative of this approach, as your moral systems are built by comparison and judgment of your immediate social circle, the individual can end up being limited to/by them and be isolated from ways of living external to his/hers culture... Latin conservative families tend to judge strongly the system of values of other communities!

In the movie where the white rose was thrown was dreams Selena had because in some religions if someone throws you a white rose and you don’t catch it means that you’re gonna pass soon, Selena kept having those dreams. Also at the end of this concert where she is riding the carriage and waving to every you can see that someone threw a white rose at her and she didn’t catch it…

This show was recorded for a TV special that was going to air soon on national TV. Because of her death, they decided to release it as a posthumous tribute. Since they already had the footage, they decided to release it on DVD 2 years later. They rerecorded the music and edited out some of the monologue where she thanks another Tejano artist who performed earlier that evening on the same stage. It is amazing Tre how you said she seemed like a Disney princess because for some time after her death, her family and Disney were in talks to do a project, which was never revealed. That project fell through for some reason. Nobody knows what they were going to do. Her family is very protective over what is created with her name and image. So, everything you see out there about her is fully supported by the family. Of course theres a lot of bootlegged material (like shirts and books) but the majority of things are sealed by her company/family. I saw her in concert twice here in TEXAS.
