This episode is so fucking cool. And, of course, Grog is an excellent Bunion Master! It’s all anyone could have asked for...

Dude I know! I was just watching that part and thinking the same thing. Out of all the craziness from this episode that scene always stuck out to me. Liam literally made it cannon that Vax had a dream that he was Liam lol This whole episode is just so incredibly meta in the best way
3:27:53 I honestly think this is the only time on the entire history of Critical role where sam breaks, and is genuinely struck speechless at the sheer absurdity of the circumstances he got himself into, trying to kill his friends imaginary, IMAGINARY bear, in a game within a game, two levels deep, because he knows that killing it only one level down would make Laura genuinely upset. WHEELS WITHIN WHEELS
This bit is my favorite Critical Role moment of all time. I wish we could've seen the rest of the cast completely lose it as well but seeing Travis having to spit out his beer, Laura and Tal both collapse in laughter while Sam and Liam simultaneously suffocate-clap, and then Sam completely blue-screened, it's just the best.
@Dominick except Sam said almost same joke way back in campaign one, when Orion was still with them, and his was more funny at my opinion. Too bad cast didn't notice it though.

I love how their characters are the total opposite of themselves when it comes to RP: -Sam does his normal voice for Scanlan. Scanlan does an accent for Scanlan bis (Scottish and sometimes australian, for some reason) -Liam is very invested and edging rules-lawyer. Vax doesn't get *anything* that happens. -Laura is the best and heavier RP-er at the table. Vex doesn't even know how to act like herself. -Taliesin tries to advocate decisions, showing the pros and cons and is basically intervening a lot. Percy sits at the back seat and watches the disaster happen...
This is a neat observation that you made! Thanks for sharing, it’s really interesting to see it when it’s pointed out like that, shows the acting chops and how much time they’ve thought about their characters
Joseph Yates its so funny cause the whole one shot is basically the story of how the baby was made. I guess both were at a bar and someone (maybe even ashley) puked on them. Afterwards they went home and had sex. Vox machina representa the sperms fighting their way to the egg
He probably refuses to watch it out of spite. He said to Travis during an episode of Talks Machina: "if you ever do an in-game session DM-ing as Grog, please... PLEASE invite one of my NPCs so I can play!" Cold, Travis. Cold.
I love how all of Grogs fuckery with the other characters (him succeeding at everything, him finding platinum while Laura finds poop, Vax failing the jump roll even though he had the highest roll) all of this would be absolutely unacceptable and probably irritate players in a normal game but because they know eachother so well and they are in the unique position that its GROG and not travis Game Mastering, its just a heap of fun and laughs
It does speak a lot of "That Guy" DMs. The ones with the self insert DM-PC that is great at everything, always making whatever they want happen regardless of player choice or rolls, ect. I actually think it's perfectly done on the meta-level. I usually think of those DMs as either inexperienced in how the game works or just very egotistical and put their own enjoyment over everyone else's. That IMO perfectly what Grog of all people probably would have done after having just discovered the game.
@@hellbringer96 its actually a good game setting where meta gaming would be expected. because it's TRUE to their characters. I can imagine Vex lying about all her roles (something i wish they did In this game)
@BakPak Gamingsince its not DnD but a joke version of it so i guess BMing? Tho thats why I prefer the general term of Game Master / GMing. As its system agnostic and surprise surprise DND is not the only existing rpg :V
"The... door just, opens? They dont do that! My own bathroom door at Whitestone hits me for 1 point of bludgeoning damage every time I go through it" "That's how its designed" I love how its now canon that every door is out to get them. Doors should have been Vex's favorite enemy
I imagine "globular" is just Grog's new favorite word because it's the one big word he knows. He now goes around using it in any situation he can think of. "Why don't you just go poke the dragon, Percy? Lost your globulars?". "What goes globular, comes globular".
Just imagine if the Mighty Nein found Grog in a tavern who invites them to play Bunions&Flagons with him to pass the time, some time. That'd be amazing.
I mean. That'd be a great quest hook. Have him be like a ghost or something that tries to help a member of the party find rest by finishing a game they never did. If the characters ever feel boring or stale to anyone they could use it as a break

Something about this bothered me visually every time I watched it until I just now realized that Travis fills up like 32% more space than Matt, even after the DM cam is pulled back to make space for how tall he is.

I hope that in Season 2. When the rest of the new characters are just sitting and eating. Grog just randomly comes in, sits down at the table and is like "Alight... So I wanna play this game, and you guys will play it with me." And Grog should be a legend at this point so they can't really object to him.
I love that the entire time this game is going Vax is just confused. It's like deep down somewhere Liam can feel this happening and hes just screaming "IM TOO MANY LEVELS DEEP!!"

I love all of them, but just seeing Laura's reactions, she seamlessly goes between Vex reactions, and when Travis pulls out an unexpected situation, she smiles sooo much :) She's so impressed and proud of her husband and I REALLY hope she runs one soon! Just about everyone has DMed at least once except Marisha(tomorrow night I heard she is though right?), Laura, and Ashley(maybe likely once she's done filming, but maybe not cause she is obviously the busiest so maybe she can't prep even a one shot)
Yeah, it was definitely a secret character/baby announcement. That’s why Travis didn’t say the blue lady was a tiefling or it would be too obvious and the whole fan base would’ve lost their collective shit on the first day of campaign two
I love how Sam's idea of Scanlan roleplaying is like a sad version of when he was Gavroche in Les Mis. Also his pure delight at diving into the "yes, and" of Travis playing Grog DMing
Grog - ''...Roll an attack at disadvantage.'' Percy - ''Why at disadvantage?'' Grog - ''Because I've never seen you throw a fucking spear before!'' Beautiful. :)
Correct me if I'm wrong,(edit added, thanks nirobu for the link. I stand corrected. But will leave the comment for others to find.) but their second campaign characters weren't picked or made yet. Plus it takes place like 20 years before C2 technically.
The absolute GENIUS of this idea though, like I'm assuming Travis has never DM'd before seeing as his first DnD game was the infamous birthday one-shot, so he can use Grog's lack of intelligence to cover if he gets smth wrong, but it's also a fucking HILARIOUS idea
[About a door that simply opened without molesting half of the team...] Vax: My own bathroom's door in Whitestone does me 1 point of bludgeoning damage each time I open it! Percy: Yes, it's designed for that, I mean it's a DOOR! Vax: This door is faulty... I can relate to that x)

Watching Grog become more and more refined with his speech and his vocabulary throughout the game. I have two head canons at this point that I can't choose from. 1. Being he's actually far more intelligent and just act's like he's not because it's funnier that way. 2. Being that he found a potion that enhances his intelligence for a few hours, listened to people at the tavern play this game. Then decided that THIS was what he was going to use it for.
I love actors having to act like they don't know how to act, one of my favored tropes. Now I love pro DnD players playing a game of DnD in a game of DnD where they don't know how to play DnD
"Maybe we should just *support him* and go with it!" - Sam speaking to the table about Travis through Scanlan speaking to Vox Machina about Grog. I love Sam. Roflmao
It's ridiculous that he even needed to do that. Did they (read: Liam) really think just being uncooperative the whole time was going to make for good content? Once again, Sam shows why he's the runaway all star of this show.
@@MrRyanxdavey that was just RP and good fun because Vax and Grog be like that. That's also why Grog is mean to him all game long and yes it does make for good content because it is a meta game and those interactions between characters being players and characters in the game are just nice :)

-Sam does his normal voice for Scanlan. Scanlan does an accent for Scanlan bis (Scottish and sometimes australian, for some reason)
-Liam is very invested and edging rules-lawyer.
Percy deserved the extra 500XP because the pun "Did you perpetrate this grizzly murder" was absolutely GLOSSED OVER
This is quite possibly my favorite one shot now. A dude playing a dude who thinks hes another dude! The chemistry was just great!
Joseph Yates sounds like tropic thunder x)
Joseph Yates its so funny cause the whole one shot is basically the story of how the baby was made. I guess both were at a bar and someone (maybe even ashley) puked on them. Afterwards they went home and had sex. Vox machina representa the sperms fighting their way to the egg
Never go full grog.
tis sooooooooo meta....
And this was mine too. Until the “Search for Grog” came out hahaha. 2019 anyone?
The fact the Travis dropped his and Laura’s characters for the 2nd campaign as well as their pregnancy in this one shot is fantastic.
Me watching this for the first time right now, i was like wait……did he just…..bfueiwnslwnrhrubdjiwmw
I know I was like “fjord? jester? Baby!”
I believe Laura had played Jester in a previous one shot
Made me believe that Fjorester was canon ALL along! LOL.
@@hms21793 Fjord? Jester? RONIN???
I wish there was a reaction video of Mercer watching this.
Oh god, I'd pay to watch that
Both Matt and Marisha would be CACKLING
He probably refuses to watch it out of spite. He said to Travis during an episode of Talks Machina: "if you ever do an in-game session DM-ing as Grog, please... PLEASE invite one of my NPCs so I can play!"
Cold, Travis. Cold.
Probably he and Marisha watched this together with tears coming out of their eyes from laughing so much! I like to think so!
Yes I want to see that!
I love how all of Grogs fuckery with the other characters (him succeeding at everything, him finding platinum while Laura finds poop, Vax failing the jump roll even though he had the highest roll) all of this would be absolutely unacceptable and probably irritate players in a normal game
but because they know eachother so well and they are in the unique position that its GROG and not travis Game Mastering, its just a heap of fun and laughs
It helps that he did it in a way that had no consequences to the game from a mechanical standpoint. Just cosmetically.
So what the players would need to do, is role play themselves in how Grog's mind works as seeing Grog roleplay a DM. If that makes sense.
@BakPak Gamingsince its not DnD but a joke version of it so i guess BMing?
Tho thats why I prefer the general term of Game Master / GMing. As its system agnostic and surprise surprise DND is not the only existing rpg :V
Ah, this “Bunions and Flagons” game must be a rip off of my favourite game, “Cave Systems And Fire Lizards”!
They all stem from "Half plate armor" anyway.
Watch yourself in the caaaves! There's lizards....
Which is of course derived from the original classic “Rock and Hot”
Tombs and Salamanders
Caverns and Fire Scaleys
"The... door just, opens? They dont do that! My own bathroom door at Whitestone hits me for 1 point of bludgeoning damage every time I go through it"
"That's how its designed"
I love how its now canon that every door is out to get them. Doors should have been Vex's favorite enemy
Let's all give Travis some credit for DM'ing max level characters for his first time DM'ing
That...yeah. Didnt realize that. Good point
Travis didint dm max lvl characters.... grog did
He might’ve DMed offscreen before
Man, Pike's reading and math lessons are really paying off! Proud of you, Grog.
I imagine "globular" is just Grog's new favorite word because it's the one big word he knows. He now goes around using it in any situation he can think of. "Why don't you just go poke the dragon, Percy? Lost your globulars?". "What goes globular, comes globular".
the starting npcs in the tavern being a blue skinned lady and a half orc and then jester and ford being in the next campaign is amazing
with a baby!!!! 😍😍
And there was a baby. Wouldn't Laura be pregnant with Ronin right around this time?
"Do you even know what genealogy is??"
"Yeh, it's like a blue denim"
"I'm not asking you this in character," said Laura, asking Scanlan in character as Vex.
BWAAAM
Lol
The brilliant thing was asking him in Vex's normal accent.
Sam’s bit of doing an outrageously bad character voice that keeps changing is pure genius
With all of the other hints at C2 characters from Travis I swear Sam was hinting at Nott with that voice lol
@huayujie143 And Liam pointing out that one of the dice he was using was BOOK themed.
If the characters ever feel boring or stale to anyone they could use it as a break
the Mighty Nein finds Grog in a tavern, but then some half-elf pokes Fjord in the eyes :)

It's hard to be a good DM.
But it's nearly impossible to be good at being a bad DM.
Travis is just that good.
It helps that Grog has no idea what math is or how to count
+10 Charisma
What's funny is he's also good at the one thing Matt isn't: narration. If they could somehow do Dragon Ball fusion, you'd have the best DM that ever lived.
Scanlons in game voice sounds like freaking Doby from Harry Potter.
What makes you think Matt is bad at narration?
After years of Matt trying...it was GROG who finally managed to split the party.
I love how Grog messes with Vax's roll results, that is one of those little fun details that make it really feel like Grog is indeed the BM.
Yes! Messing with Vax and helping Scanlan was so Grog! Travis's genious was evident throughout this episode.
Something about this bothered me visually every time I watched it until I just now realized that Travis fills up like 32% more space than Matt, even after the DM cam is pulled back to make space for how tall he is.
Travis is a freaking tank lol
dude this comment made me legitimately laugh out loud. hahahaha I didn't realize until I read this and now I can't unsee it
It's the first thing I noticed when I loaded the video and saw Travis in the DM seat and it made me laugh. It's honestly hilarious how much space he takes up in the frame but also how uncomfortable he looks (Travis did great of course, but seeing how nervous he was is adorable.
3:27:55 Percy's strained "did you perpetrate this grizzly murder?" pun is the cherry on top of this whole sequence
Yeah man...the puns this episode were excellent

This is empirical evidence to have Travis DM a game yearly.
Grog's Game. Should be a national holiday.
Bi-annually at least.
I hope that in Season 2. When the rest of the new characters are just sitting and eating. Grog just randomly comes in, sits down at the table and is like "Alight... So I wanna play this game, and you guys will play it with me." And Grog should be a legend at this point so they can't really object to him.
When Marisha goes to labour, Grog would be taking over the show by rage.

'There was a guy with long hair playing at the tavern.' since the animated show has depicted several characters who look like Matt AND showed a group of guards playing the game too, it is very possible Grog actually saw someone playing this game in the tavern lol
This is the truest experience of a typical home D&D session I have ever seen. Right down to using children's toys and cooking utensils on the maps. I appreciate Critical roles production value but this feels like home.

Laura would have been about two months pregnant here, and they definitely would have prepped their characters for C2 by then!
Yeah, it was definitely a secret character/baby announcement. That’s why Travis didn’t say the blue lady was a tiefling or it would be too obvious and the whole fan base would’ve lost their collective shit on the first day of campaign two

[About a door that simply opened without molesting half of the team...]
Vax: My own bathroom's door in Whitestone does me 1 point of bludgeoning damage each time I open it!
Percy: Yes, it's designed for that, I mean it's a DOOR!

Head Canon accepted. cheers for that XD

@@thomastakesatollforthedark2231 Well, at the time it was what we had so it seemed fine. Once I got going with 3rd/3.5 however, I began to see just how imbalanced and inconsistent ad&d was. That would hurt...EVERYONE'S brains. Us included.
That shits hard. I had to do that in a game where we got soul swapped for a bit. It’s rough but fun.
This popped up in my recommended 3 years later and the first things I've noticed at this point are:
- Grog made the couple in the tavern Fjord and Jester and they have a baby
- Vax's wild dream is himself as Liam IRL driving his kids around
I love this group of misfits
I'm glad you noticed that about the green orc and the blue teifling who had a baby. Travis threw that out there long before the official announcement, and nobody noticed.
Popular successful voice actors with sizable bank accounts, always surrounded by friends/family and beloved by tons of fans are misfits... 🤔🤔🤔
As Percy once said in the mansion how about we grab some paper grab some dice and see how far the rabbit hole goes
samtrue3 shit.. Travis is the original DM.. thats what it felt like
He had a continuity to the play that surpassed expectations...
Grog was always impatient forcing the game forward

I really wish we could see how Matt would have reacted to this episode.
"Why didn't you let me sleep in?! I spend so much time killing things and I never get to cuddle..."
SOMEONE CUDDLE VAX PLZ.
Yeah I didn't realize this silly one shot would make episode 114 hurt that much more
@@gradientforce761this all happened before de vecna fight ep 114??
"I ate that meatball from Scanlan and I fuckin diiiied.......I dont wanna make any assumptions but...."
I am fucking dead XD
I couldn't stop laughing
Probably the best moment in the whole episode
"And in front of Scanlan materializes, to his horror, a fucking T-Rex."
Best Grog line ever! Hands down.
When you learn that fjord and Jester make a cameo + THE BABY at 17:57
Now that’s what you call foreshadowing
The baby is Nott
Thom Hixenbaugh Nott what?
@@parkerharris4489 Nott a real baby.
Nott the brave
*fjoreshadowing
Oh man, I'm only 16 minutes in, the actual game barely started, but good God if the rest of the episode is even half as hilarious as Travis playing Grog playing Pike being drunk this will officially be the day that I die of laughter.
Reading this two months later I realized this poor person must have actually died by the time they got to "assumptions". RIP TheGreatMizuti!

@@BasketOfPuppies sams laugh in that scene is one of tge funniest crit role moments ever. It still cracks me up even after seeing it more than 10 times. xD
I died during the Scanlan poisoning Trinket scene. that's where I lost it. SOOO Funny!
It wasn't until the first dice roll that it dawned on me...
Grog doesn't know numbers.
This was a f*cking *incredible* idea.
Liam being the first to figure out he could cheat by confusing Grog with numbers.
The moment that Laura saw that Travis had gotten sharpie on their pepper mill and he refused to look in her direction had me in tears🤣🤣🤣
“Is that our pepper mill from home with marker on it? Travis Willingham!”
“What? It’s from our wedding shower, it’s fine.”
Long haired guy at the tavern is his name Matheson mercy
Stop the fake news, it was Catthew Bercer!
Liars, it was Mattrick Merci.
man's a legend
It was mad marker
It was obviously the sourcerer Mathias M. McCree man of a million faces its slightly creepy when you see them all pinned in the display cases though
That second 'speak w/ animals' did it for me. We can all stop trying to roleplay now. Travis playing Grog playing BM playing Trinket just did it to perfection
God this episode is such a meta mindfuck 😂
ZerkerHealzzz96 It's interesting to see them be Vox Machina without a DM in Layer 2 of D&Dception.
Mehaz 2 DMs? “You want to roll a dice? Make a dexterity check” 😂😂
It's like they are playing in the 5th or 25th person. I love it, but sweet jeeezus it's very possible that my fragile mind might break.
*mecca
This is so meta it hurts.
I love how far Liam goes to be ion character. He is being vax pretending to be little vax, having no idea how to play the game. 10/10
that's interesting, i found it lowkey annoying, lol
I loved what Liam did! And I loved how Grog kept messing with Vax, as per.
@@windows-into-spaces Right? I did too, especially after the 3rd time
I really appreciate that he, who brought 8 tubs of miniatures for Travis to use, acts as if he doesn't know how to play the game at all. it non stop made me laugh
“It’s no mystery that Grog likes you better than he likes me, so--“
“SHUT UP LET GROG TELL A STORY”
