Lunada Bay Palos Verdes | Biggest LA Surf since last Winter

  • The biggest surf to hit CA since last Jan '23 hit today. The next swell is on track for the weekend and is likely to be in the same size class. Swell direction looks even more west, so SoCal could be a little bigger than Thu/Fri.

When I was a kid (70s), almost all the surfing films/footage were of Hawaii. I was really starved for California footage, but I understood that filming these spots was not feasible. Now I just open the laptop and enjoy the highlights from THAT day. Ha! I guess I sound like an old man. Anyway, thanks for the great footage.

In all the footage I've ever seen of Lunada until now, it looked pretty mushy. I knew it could hold more size...but I didn't know that it ever had a critical section where the lip pitched out like at many of the more renowned spots. It really is a formidable big wave and I have a *tiny* bit more sympathy for the locals now.

Nobody is really ripping. Kooks are struggling to make the weird bumby shoulder. much rather go down to swamis, cardiff or blacks ...
Even big trestles is way more rippable than tired lunada. I'll drive up to Oxnard and keep heading north to Tarantula's at Jalama.

Lunada Bay is very racist, including most of the YT people in Palos Verdes, the locals there for years would beat up and harass people, especially minorities who would tried to surf there or even just to view the waves. I grew up in Redonde beach the city over and got into several fist fights in my youth trying to surf over there!
