They said I couldn't build an off-grid home in Hawaii on a small budget

  • Mahalo for joining me on a tour of my Hawaiian off-grid paradise. Each year I leave the bitter cold of Minnesota and spend the winter building my small home in the woods of the Puna district of Big Island, Hawaii. Still a work in progress, each year I get closer to my dream of a self-sustaining homestead a million miles from anywhere.

    If you are building a tiny home in Hawaii just build it on a flat bed trailer as your foundation. keep the tires on and skirt the trailer with lattice. then register the trailer and pay the license plate cost. This way you wont pay property tax on the tiny home. I built one on Oahu and it drove the property tax guy crazy... but alas its a trailer not a home on foundation..

    • @HawaiiOffGrid
      @HawaiiOffGrid  Год назад +10

      The property tax here on Big Island is so low that it's not even a consideration. $200/yr

      @@HawaiiOffGridI got my husband to watch your video and now he wants to move to Hawaii and changed his mind about moving to Vietnam. We have around $100,000 to buy land and build. Do you think that’s enough?

    • @HawaiiOffGrid
      @HawaiiOffGrid  2 месяца назад

      @yennguyen-uj3ri Thanks for watching again. I think it can be done within your budget. I'm currently into my project less than $75k total. But we did absolutely EVERYTHING ourselves. So yes it's totally doable if you do it that way. You can find lots just like mine for around $40k, and there's smaller lots for half that. Of course it all depends on the size of the house you want to build. A big 3bd 2bath on slab will blow your budget out of the water, no matter who builds it. But if you're creative and resourceful and you dont need anything fancy this can be done. I would suggest spending a good amount of time on the island first before making any decisions tho. This island isn't for everyone, which is one of the things that makes it special 🤪. Let me know how your plan proceeds. And I'll work on the next video

      I actually don't have any blueprints... I drew it out in a notebook and just built the simplest structure I could, because it was my first time building a house. Because of the same reason I also overbuilt it (much bigger footings/over bracing, etc). Not bad for a first timer eh?
      I've got some some footage of the loft with the big diamond windows... I'll show more of the interior of the house in the next couple upcoming videos.

      I have a septic system under the house installed in a lava tube.
      Where I'm at hasent had a lava flow in around 700 years. There are many areas of the island that are much more prone to lava flow than mine. Was definitely a consideration when I bought the property. I'm not worried. 🤙

    I love this! I'm looking forward to your future videos. How is the vog in Mountain View? How was your experience with the loud coqui frogs, mean wild hogs, noisy wild chickens, and wild dogs so far? How do you get internet out there? I'm from Honolulu, and have been starting to look into getting some property on Big Island to do my own off-grid home, and these are things my old aunties keep telling me to worry about.

      Mahalo for checking out my new channel. Your Aunties are right to be cautious of certain things that can make a property undesirable. Where I'm at the vog is only slightly noticeable every so often... so not bad at all. I've got plenty of coqui frogs around but they don't bother me at all. I rather love that sound. Rooster chickens on the other hand drive me batshit.. so I made sure to buy property where I couldn't hear any of those bastards crowing. The pigs are numerous and can be fairly destructive if you don't have your property fenced in, which is #1 on my to-do list when I get back in Nov. Can't have a nice manicured yard without a fence. As for internet I have a Verizon Jetpack for wifi and it works just fine. I can stream movies no problem. Stray dogs can be a problem in certain areas... just have to be diligent and spent time at potential properties. I literally spent 2 hours parked in front of my property just listening. All I heard for those 2 hours was birds. I found my spot

      Well, unless you're a vegetarian wild pigs and chickens can be turned into a food source... Even dogs can be a food source if you aren't too finicky. LOL! Some trapping should make do... I remember a tale about a Yankee in Tahiti who tried gardening and had his crops destroyed by the coconut crabs until he learns that the "plague" can become a delicacy...

      Damn right. I plan on building 2 pig traps into my fence I'll be constructing around an acre of my property when I get back. Then when it's time to harvest a pig I just set the trap and open the latch to the outside of the fence. Tilapia fish in the pond, chickens in their coop, and pigs whenever. Protein is taken care of. And if you know how to use a spear gun the ocean is a huge bounty as well

    Awww man that looks very nice great job👍. So can I ask you. Did you do all that work by yourself?
    Do you build houses for a living? If you don’t how did you know how to build small house like that unless thats what you do in for your profession. Im looking to buy on the big island and this is similar to what I want. Didn’t want a traditional house on my land.

    • @HawaiiOffGrid
      @HawaiiOffGrid  2 года назад +3

      Aloha meech. Yes I did build all of this myself. I don't actually do this for a living and I've never built a house before... I'm just fairly knowledgeable about tools and took it one step at a time with the help of Google and RUclips. Kicking myself now for not having RUclips premium during this... I watched SO many commercials lol. So yeah, it's totally doable to build your dream without having to hire a crew or prior house building experience. This house was build without any real design on paper. When we made the footings I didn't know what the house was gonna look like. I don't normally wing shit but that's how it went. I'll be releasing the videos showing how I built it in the coming weeks so be sure to be subscribed!

      @@HawaiiOffGrid That’s an awesome journey really inspiring man…. I don’t know if I can build my own house lol. But it’s great to see it can be done for not a lot of money maybe I can hire a small crew to build me something and not be over charge by arm and leg. I’ll be waiting for the next video showing how you did it. Definitely got a new subscriber👍.
