My ex wife is one of the very first farmer Gardner for over 60 yrs We met in 1968 in haleiwa and are still the best of friends, she's been a vegetarian for over 75 yrs. And is so knowledgeable about all plants, she eats only things from our yard which have and abundance of every fruit and vegetables known in Hawaii. Remarkable woman, I Call her Tutu wahine and she calls me Tutu Kane. First a lot of fish and slaughter my own pigs and cows also goat and sheep are in my diet too. Thanks for noticing those details! Yes, absolutely everything had to be brought down that path by hand. I have a 2 wheel Gorilla Cart that I strap materials to. Thankfully it's downhill! If it was uphill... the path would have definitely been shorter lol. Also, the Cooks Pine windowsill in the bathroom matches the sills in the living room. It's fun creating something with your bare hands and with no real plan. Mahalo for watching 👀!

Food is the most expensive thing here. Thankfully I bought the land when prices were at the bottom right before going up up up. And when you build the house completely yourself it's fairly affordable. No mortgage, no utility bills (off-grid). I found a way to make it affordable 😀

Do it! I got my 1 little acre about a year ago and its kept me more than busy. You'd be amazed how much you can fit with a bit of planning. Nothing feels better than having your own little oasis, especially one that's paid for. Anyone can buy, but few ever own. Cheers from FL!
It's definitely a dream worth working hard for. I found that bringing reinforcements helped quite a bit with all the difficult land clearing and path making. That shit required many hands! Cheers to you in AZ. Say hello when you make it to the island!

@HawaiiOffGrid well, a lot of us, including myself, really wish we were able to do this.... I live in Oahu, and I'd much rather be on the Big Island, off grid, but, I'm a contractor and there's a very limited labor pool out there as well as a lower demand for the custom services we offer.... My wife is Samoan, and she really lived off grid most of her life in Upolu. She'd love to get back to nature. Also, it's very challenging saving money to make the move and buy the land.... not to mention, we're in our late 40s and we had surprise twins 5 years ago! So, at least we can watch you do it and know that it's always possible with unique opportunities! Anyway, keep posting and have a blast!!
Just to let you know the cinder you're walking on is also the best building material on the island, Cindercrete is a mixture of cinder cement and water mixed and poured into a set of reusable forms walls are poured from 12"to 24:" Thick Cindercrete is fireproof termite proof rust rot and mold proof non toxic and has a high R value and good sound attenuation solid poured walls means no critters can live in your walls Cindercrete is the only local building material on the island Aloha Ray
NOw that you mention it that makes perfect sense. You could get a six inch thick wall for about the same price as a treated 3/4 plywood. of course you want some mesh wire in it so its not that cheap. (and a lot of work)

I'm in Hawaiian Acres. No codes or covenants here. 3 acre wooded lots and bad roads. If you can deal with the roads you're Golden. We like the raggedy roads to keep 'rippers' out. (Middle of the night bandits are rippers)
I purposely bought property on a dead end... rippers don't like dead ends because they can get trapped. I'm excited to get back on the island in 2 weeks tho

@HawaiiOffGrid well, a lot of us, including myself, really wish we were able to do this.... I live in Oahu, and I'd much rather be on the Big Island, off grid, but, I'm a contractor and there's a very limited labor pool out there as well as a lower demand for the custom services we offer....
My wife is Samoan, and she really lived off grid most of her life in Upolu. She'd love to get back to nature.
Also, it's very challenging saving money to make the move and buy the land.... not to mention, we're in our late 40s and we had surprise twins 5 years ago!
So, at least we can watch you do it and know that it's always possible with unique opportunities! Anyway, keep posting and have a blast!!

Just to let you know the cinder you're walking on is also the best building material on the island, Cindercrete is a mixture of cinder cement and water mixed and poured into a set of reusable forms walls are poured from 12"to 24:"

Cindercrete is fireproof termite proof rust rot and mold proof non toxic and has a high R value and good sound attenuation solid poured walls means no critters can live in your walls Cindercrete is the only local building material on the island

NOw that you mention it that makes perfect sense. You could get a six inch thick wall for about the same price as a treated 3/4 plywood.
of course you want some mesh wire in it so its not that cheap. (and a lot of work)

I'm in Hawaiian Acres. No codes or covenants here. 3 acre wooded lots and bad roads. If you can deal with the roads you're Golden. We like the raggedy roads to keep 'rippers' out. (Middle of the night bandits are rippers)
I purposely bought property on a dead end... rippers don't like dead ends because they can get trapped. I'm excited to get back on the island in 2 weeks tho
