This has never worked for me. I have an 2018 M3 Competition, and I have tried with a USB drive formatted as FAT32, and ExFat. Nothing works. It says that is incompatible with the vehicle. This is so, so frustrating. It is just dumb luck. It works for some people, and it doesn't work for others. A waste of time for recent models. I have searched and no one has been able to articulate the proper procedure. I am glad it worked for you. Nevertheless, thank you for the video. It is appreciated it.
Hello fellow BMW Enthusiast. The guy left off a few steps. The file is a “.bin” file. The car cannot read this file in this state. It has to be unzipped. Once you place the download file on the flash drive ( windows or Mac system) unzip it. It will then open up four (4) new zip files. High light all four, then unzip them. The original zip files will remain on the flash drive. You don’t have to remove them. Once you unzip all four zip files you will see four new sub folders. Enter each, one at a time, then unzip the .rar file(s) that’s inside of each new sub folder. I hope this helps with the newer BMWs. Happy New Year all!
Modern cars have this idiotic software Achilles heel. It is completely unnecessary, and beyond frustrating. And manufacturers and dealers couldn't care less. They just shrug off users' problems as if, once you were stupid enough to buy their defective products, the problem is YOUR problem. This mindset was spawned by companies like Microsoft, and now infects every area of industry. It goes like this: develop a product ( software ) to the point that you can launch it on the public ( launch date ) in time to meet investors' ( Wall Street ) expectations. It doesn't matter if - as you know perfectly well - the product is full of holes. Just get it out there and let the guinea pigs ( customers ) sweat with its defects until you can send out corrections ( updates ) which may or may not solve the original ( known ) problems, but will invariably cause others. Warranties are only there for the gullible. They are not intended to be honored. At least two generations have been weaned on this idiotic and unethical business model, invented by Bill Gates. They have been trained to expect product software failures, and to think that this nonsense is "normal". It is not. I have owned many, many BMWs. Loved them all. I recently purchased a used 2016 F30 for my grand daughter. It is completely wired into BMWs proprietary software disasters. I HATE the car, and I especially hate the non-intuitive user interface called the i Controller. The only things it controls ( consumes ) are the owner's time and attention. What an unmitigated lousy piece of technology. And when it fails ( which it does, repeatedly ) the BMW dealer wants a king's ransom "to look at it" ( they don't understand this stuff either ). Then they tell you that your model BMW is obsolete, and they don't support it anymore. Sound familiar? That's Bill Gates talkin' to ya'. How people are willing to put up with such flawed, expensive playthings as modern vehicles is beyond me. I have way better things to do with my time...
I have a 2016 550. Upon putting my VIN it said it's updated. I still need to see the current software in my car but if that is updated, then am doomed!!
Thanks just updated my 1 series m sport took about 14 minutes to update after install so yep just be patient and wait or you will corrupt the install. Great video
This comment is spot on. I spent over an hour on calls to BMW's "Connected Services team" this week asking them about the software update process for my F30 3 series. They were completely clueless about the process so they transferred me to the BMW "Customer Information Team" who were also completely clueless. They should put this guy on charge of their Customer Service teams and he'd probably have them sorted within a week!

For newer cars,.not for older cars like 2015 and before as these models have been updated to their final software upgrades and no newer updates will be created.

Has anyone ever solved this problem? I'm trying to update my inlaws 2012 535 but I get the same response every time. They said one garage said they could do it but they wanted 1200 to do it.
if you live in the UK and your BMW is more than 3 years old this method will not work , if your car is less than 3 years old it may does only if ; the USB drive you are using has got a minimum capacity of 32GB or more and it must be FAT32 formatted before downloading any BMW files on it.
This is the process if your car doesn't support OTA updates. Bad news if it does - the web site will not allow you to download the update, instead say "your car will be updated automatically". And of course, no OTA update on a car yet with no way to trigger it manually. Neither it is not possible to find a schedule anywhere on when the update will be pushed. So BMW.

Looks like nothing was updated though, took a screen shot of the before and after and its the same numbers except for the media which is -071 after the update and was 080 before

Hi Viorel, i haven't seem this issue before, you should be able to download it again unless BMW site stores the download history of your vin. Please try again, seem like a website problem.

Going to try this out, my F25 constantly disconnects/reconnects to my iPhone 7 and it's extremely frustrating. Hopefully this will solve my issue!
Update didn’t fix the issue, I ended up just connecting to my car through Bluetooth and use a USB cigarette charger instead...

You do not have a subscription for connected drive. So dealer has to do it. The BMW systems recognises non subscription cars......

My usual USB did not work. I used a lot of USBs but all showed off as inappropriate by iDrive. My car is X1 2017.
I think some BMW cars do not accept software update through USB, etc. Someone may kindly advise me. My car X1 AWD 2017. Thanks

They stopped that. You can't update that way anymore. The website says that your system is up to date, even if it is not the case.

It updates the cars computer safety features and fault detection features mostly. If you want a new look get a newer BMW
