- In this vidoe I will walk you through how to update your BMW idrive system in 3 simple steps.
1. Locate VIN Number. (which I will show you how).
2. Download Software from BMW using your computer to USB stick.
3. Install Software to your idrive system.

Hello, Thanks for the video, The website seems to have completly changed. There is no option to enter VIN and check for sofware update anymore just a bunch compatibility nonsense they wrote there. No option for vin, no link for download. been on their website for hours through your link and other youtube tutorials doesnt seen like there is any info out there. Have they stopped this? Have a 2017 G30 on Idrive 6 which am sure doesnt have remote update. Any help will be appreciated

wow this is what I was looking for!! It successfully updated my media as well. I have a 2015 335i and every time i skip a song the first one will stay on display for ever. It wasn't a big deal but it kinda bothered me, but with this software update it got fixed. Thank you so much for this video!!

Wow I’m just watching this video for the first time and that problem isn’t a huge deal but it bothers me every single day because I play music from an app on my phone and no matter what song plays, it only shows the info from the first song. I’m hoping this will fix my problem.

I managed to update my BMW 3 series 2017. Thank you for making it easy to follow.
It worked for my bmw f30 and my mums old car. The idrive is very smooth now especially the Bluetooth connectivity etc.

Tried this process...repeatedly. Followed the instructions exactly, with two separate memory sticks. The car does not recognize the memory sticks?! Anyone else have this issue. I hate the idea of having to go to the dealership for such a simple thing. 2017 340i.

Hi George, this could be two reasons why it’s grey.
a) usb not formatted correctly
b) your vehicle already has most up to date software or no update available due to vehicle age.

I noticed you’re the 3rd person commenting the same message. BMW may have stopped updating which is annoying. I will see if I can find free alternative method.

This software update helps most of data such as map etc but not entire sure of SOS. There are no harm in updating software. My suggestion is to contact your local BMW if you haven't already since your is still under warranty.

When was the vehicle registered? That will determine if its still under warranty.

I tried 3 USB sticks, all types of formats and iDrive still shows me that USB is not supported.

You will need CarPlay on your idrive if need Spotify. CarPlay can be purchased via BMW Connect app or their website.

That's strange. Did you visit BMW recently? They may have updated your idrive as part of routine.

Which year is your vehicle? You should be able to find software update 2015-2020. Newer vehicles are within warrantee and they should get remote update automatically.
My 2017 330e i believe is an idrive6. Are you able to download newer idrive platforms to your head unit?
The update will give you your current idrive number most recent version. It will not change your idrive 6 to 7 as example.

Hi, I have just checked the BMW website and it seems that they have removed the download feature sorry. If you have newer idrive 7 or 8, you can update remotely.

If you have done coding, yes it will potentially reset everything. Do it your own risk

If your vehicle is within warrantee, there is no need to update.

Does this happen when your trying to update idrive? Is your usb file formatted correctly?
@@APTechs it happens when on the BMW website and I input my VIN number, which makes me think it’s related to the car. I have pro nav from factory so very unsure.

I think 2021 BMW updates are done remote automatically. No harm checking bmw website if they have updates.

I got BMW 530d 2014, tried updating the software but the iDrive shows “Software on USB device not up-to-date”. The file is UPD05074 any help?
Does your vehicle recognise a usb is plugged in? If no, you may need to format your usb to MDos fat then try it again
@@APTechsyes it recognises the usb is in, but it just says the software is not up to date even tho I went on the bmw website and downloaded the file they sent me for the vin.
@Ebadul_Hx that’s strange. Maybe they discontinued updating software for older generation. The vehicle demonstrated on my video is 2016 - I don’t know if that makes any difference

Hi Danny, Have you previously had Bluetooth capabilities? Some Older BMWs does not support Bluetooth music. My sibling has 1 series 2012 and it does not have Bluetooth music play.

Idrive software uses your VIN to identify if software is available so changing the head unit will not help other than looking more slick.

I have noticed on mine 3D maps in special areas like London Bridge and tall towers such as shard. It also enhances connectivity. It does not give you apple car play if you don’t have that feature already.
Where do you download the software from? Never mind I found it. It says that my vehicle is up to date and there is nothing to download. I have a 2018 x5 f15 and the sat radio/ navigation and carplay all quit working after I coded out the passenger seatbelt. I restored the backup and nothing. I used Carly.
You may have accidentally deleted the retrofit coding you had by restoring original. You can restore from Carly again if it saved a date on the ECU back to what it was. Alternatively you can get CarPlay from connect drive app if you have previously purchased this service.

I would suggest you get this diagnosed by technician. However, if you want to do it yourself, you can try Carly OBD2 reader. I have done a diagnostic video on my BMW on this channel.

I got a 2013 420d , and Bluetooth only works on call audio…will it update the Bluetooth as well ? Will I be able to play music via Bluetooth ?
If your vehicle did not come with manufacturer Bluetooth full capability then updating idrive software would not gain you extra features. When you download new software it asks your VIN so it knows the capabilities
I don't think it works anymore. I have a bmw x5 35i 2012. The bmw site keeps saying that an error has occurred and to try again later. I've noticed a lot of other people claiming the same error on multiple videos. I used another browser, etc... might be an outdated video at this point in time.
I think they have discontinued updates for older vehicles which is annoying for users.

Hi, no this update will not give you GPS. You can purchase GPS from BMW connect website if your vehicle is compatible. This update is for connectivity issues and GPS road updates for those who already have gps built in.
I keep getting an error everytime i try. I have factory CIC filled 2010 E90 LCI. Map is the only version i can find in the menus dated 2010, so it has never been updated.

You will need to replace the entire idrive system. It also costy to change to android
I have read that you need to unpack the bin file that you download from BMW update website before you connect your flash drive to the vehicle? Says it will not work unless you unpack- which is almost impossible to figure how to do that...are you sure if you connect your flash drive with the bin file from BMW that this will work without unpacklng that file?

If there are no software available, this could mean that they have discontinued updating. You can try using newer vehicle VIN but not sure if it will work.

This update will not give you Bluetooth. You will need hardware support to have Bluetooth function.
Sadly the site says my car is completely updated. But I have CIC head unit not NBT. I’d have to upgrade my whole infotainment system
You're missing out much in the NBT either. I have the NBT and it's pretty basic. You best bet is retrofit kit

Have you attempted updating software following process mentioned in this video? To be honest anything related to navigation, I use BMW connected app where I send message as test to the car and it navigates me. I made a separate video on this can be found on my channel if you didn’t know. This maybe a solution for you if software update doesn’t work. Hope this helps.

If your vehicle supports voice command then it should work. For example, my vehicle does not support this so updating software will not help.

If your BMW is compatible you can buy GPS from BMW connected drive. It’s worth investing and it’s less than $100

If BMW are releasing updates it should update. It’s worth giving a try, I have updated mine last year so not sure if they release updates each year. The BMW website will tell you if i3 has any updates…
The engine doesn’t have to be on. Just the ignition.

I don’t think so. You BMW may not have the supporting hardware and software. This process should at least update your Bluetooth.
