Oompaville is one of the most funny and creative people on this platform and I’m glad you’re bringing light to this situation. This situation should never happen to anyone, especially someone as hard-working as Oompaville.
I was scammed out of $500 last year (it was my fault for being an idiot though). To say I have a personal hatred for scammers is an understatement. I hope Jake gets the pants sued off of him and goes to jail.
I swear. I wasn't scammed thankfully but my phone's been stolen. I'm still salty about it and will fuck up the guy if i ever meet him again. Can't imagine losing hundreds of thousands of dollars or fuck million dollars to scammers. Hope oompaville gets his money back.
A few years ago a (former) friend asked to borrow $500 due to an emergency. I had extra money at the time so I agreed to help. As I handed him the cash, he assured me he’d pay me back the upcoming Friday his payday. Anyway, that Friday came and went… and so did the next 3 months. I came to a point where I was running low on cash myself. I would nicely mention to him that I wasn’t demanding all paid back in full immediately but would appreciate even the smallest amount on a weekly basis until his debt was paid (like $20-$50/wk). He blew me off repeatedly and when I eventually snapped and asked point blank about my money, he hits me with “IT’S NOT MY FAULT YOU WERE BEING IRRESPONSIBLE AND SPENT ALL YOUR MONEY! NOW I’M NOT PAYING YOU SHIT!” There’s so much more bullshit to this story but I’ll just end it there to avoid an even bigger wall of text. Fuck asshole scammers.
I've been scammed out of a few grand before and it hurts. In my case it was also a professional thing, where I paid for certain services thinking I was paying for an expert, and even though the person was all credentialed, turned out they didn't know anything at all. It also would have been hard to sue and too much effort to get the money back. Can't imagine how much losing a million would hurt.
I design control systems for industrial machinery for a living -- I've seen this very often. It's actually pretty common in a lot of industries. Companies will "outsource" their machine building to a Chinese company. The machine ships without a logo and generic schematics, the American company just puts their logo and redoes the schematics in English. Edit: to be clear, not all of them are crap, so it's not a total scam, just plants being overcharged for machinery, but it's still very scummy regardless.
Oompaville seems like the RUclipsr that nothing bad would ever happen to him because he’s so chill, at the same time being honest and down to earth. It’s really sad that someone he trusted shitted on him.
Diagnosed autistic and idk what that has to do with it. We still learn to look out for scams especially if you spend a lot of time online like I did growing up, it’s just in general for most people it’s unexpected from a friend. :T
To add on maybe its just me but I don’t really tell people I’m autistic (unless I’m talking from personal experience online) unless they’re extremely close and are going to spend more time with me when I open up to them. But maybe it’s because we can be a bit naive? I haven’t fallen for any scams but I might have if it turned out my boyfriend was scamming me x)
I feel so bad for him. A tenth of that is an incredible amount of money that could change practically anyones' life, and he lost 10 times that. I hope oompaville takes jake to court and gets his money back.

It sucks to see it all unfold. Im really happy Caleb says progress is looking good, I cant imagine how devistating of a revelation that would be. I think his biggest setback was actual manufacturers looked at his inquiries and shut him out because they probably background checked his youtube channel and said "yeah we cant assosciate with this" when they shouldve been seeing easy dollar signs
@@apk4381why? Do you have any proof to say it's a PR stunt? Or do you just wanna be the one guy who thinks he knows what's going on behind the scenes.

I remember hearing about Oompah's candy company for the first time when he was using its name to help Coffeezilla expose a scammer. It really sucks that one of his friends turned out to be another scammer and fleeced him out of a million. I hope he's able to recover financial eventually.

I have been scammed like this a few times.. Whenever I seek expertise from someone else, ALWAYS get a few extra opinions.. NEVER trust just one guy or one group on a subject.. Get different perspectives, and talk about it with the original guy. If the original guy suddenly gets real defensive and offended that you looked for alternate opinions, that's a HUGE RED FLAG. Real professionals, or people who actually know what they're doing won't get defensive when you approach them with other source's opinions.. They'll usually be relaxed, and honest with you. If they can do it better, they'll say so, and if they know why the other sources might be wrong on something, they'll always be more than happy to explain to you WHY and HOW.. What they'll NEVER do, is hide information, and pressure you into just staying in their corner, and threaten to bail if you doubt them.
Once, that was common sense. It's usually encouraged by business you want to buy from if they're on the level. I get approaching mates who are plumbers, electricians or mechanica etc to get a better deal but they're usually in business themselves.
@@oppossumsarecool It's because everyone is in the mindset of "well, that wouldn't have happened to me." When they probably get scammed monthly and don't notice lol
In all the time I've watched Oompa that's one thing that's always struck me about him: his ability to just keep a smile on his face when most people might be completely breaking down. Absolute unit. Thanks for sharing

Even my brother had a run in with friends who he thought were trustworthy enough to help him start up a restaurant. At the end of the day when it comes to pure business, NEVER give your friends a pass when it comes to trust and money. You need reputable and professional business partners if you want to survive in the world of start-ups.

For those wondering how people in the industry avoid situations like this, this is how buying a machine usually goes: 1. Hire an experienced project engineer in operations. 2. Describe what you want to achieve to the project engineer. 3. Project Engineer creates a detailed document with all the needs of the machine RFQ (Request For Quotation) 4. Project Engineer sends out RFQ to different suppliers or machine builders to get offers in. 5. Offers are evaulated and you pick a supplier to negotiate a contract with 6. Negotiate the contract with the supplier, deliverables, timings, ramp up rate of machine (efficiency at start), payment periods, ... 7. Agree on contract and the supplier start the process of building the machine. Usually at this point you would pay around 30% of total contract price 8. After machine is build you go to the supplier and do a FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) to see if the machine complies with everything you want. If everything is OK you usually pay another 30% of the total price. 9. Supplier install machine on site, you do IO (signals) testing, check if everything is built as described, check if integration is done properly with your other machines, ... 10. You start running test product on the machine and see if the machine is OK to go in commercial production. (Safety, quality, ....) 11. If machine is OK'd for commercial production you sign the Preliminary Acceptance and usually pay another 30%. 12. You start commercial production together with supplier 13. After X weeks/months if the machine is running according to spec (defect rate, run speed, unplanned stops, ...) and there are no open points on the punch list you sign the Final Acceptance and you pay the last 10%

Everyone is part of the game, doesn’t matter how vile or great your personality. When you play the business game and aren’t prepared for the worse possible outcome, then you’re not ready for a business. It’s great to receive help from a friend, but you always want to be the one to make the moves so you aren’t getting bullshitted on. Lesson learn, if not, history shall repeat. 😊👍
Bro idk how people get scammed like this… I double, triple check for better deals on any item I spend more then $100 on let alone spending 700k on somthing.
It's stories like these that make me happy RUclips hates my channel. All shadowed zero exposure. And random removing of views and subscribers. I accept that better than losing a million dollars.
I was just talking with my friend the other day how the definition of friend seems to have evolved with the internet to mean a whole lot less than it used to.
I deal a lot in the custom manufacture of industrial equipment for food and pharmaceutical. I do some fabrication in Canada and some in China and India. I feel bad for Oompaville, but it just sounds like he was too far removed from his money. He didn't have direct oversight and completely trusted his friend with an enormous sum. You make drawings and models before fabrication. You shop around to see who has the capacity to fabricate it and you go from there. He 100% did get scammed by a friend, but not overseeing such a big part of the project was negligence on his behalf.
Yeah, I feel like Charlie tried to frame this as something that was hard to avoid with the whole "he was his friend" angle and the absolutely asinine response to a viewer who asked "Why did he not shop around?" as if Jake is seriously the only guy on earth who makes candy machines. While Oompaville did get scammed, he is at fault for it. The excuses used in this video would get you laughed out of a building in any professional setting.
I'm so happy Charlie is talking about this. What happened to Caleb needs enormous awareness by everyone. Jake needs to get what's coming to him. I bought his sour candy around the same time as I bought Charlie's Godslap comic series, and I remember enjoying both of them simultaneously. Caleb's candy actually slaps and there were notes and stickers in there too and I could tell he worked really hard on the production of these guys. He was advertising it so much during that time too, it sucks to see that the money I paid to support him went to some scamming scumbag instead. If he launches his next shipment, I will definitely be buying it again for sure.
I love you Charlie, platonically ofc, I've been going through bad rough times as a 20 yr old. You make me laugh when no one and nothing else can, you keep me going everyday. Thank you
My sister had a similar scenario last year where a close friend scammed her bad, not a million bad but for her at the time was a pain. They were good friends with lots of communication on what was going on but after a year the scam was done and her ‘friend’ disappeared instantly off of everything. Shit sucks, people are terrible sometimes
I lost 3000 dollars in a pyramid scheme so I get how it feels like to get scammed, still it's nothing compared to losing a million dollars, hang in there man. ❤
Unfortunately this might fall under the grey area of retail arbitrage/middle-manning. They will just argue that Jake was providing a service ("sourcing" the machine). Unless he explicitly lied about the actual manufacturers price that he paid for it in their agreement, there isn't much that can be done. It's no different than a drop shipper convincing you to buy a product for 10x what they paid.
i can understand getting scammed by a stranger, you never see them again and have never seen their faces for the most but a freaking friend... i hope oompa gets back to being able to trust people again and doesnt get paranoid, this shit hurts

It's just drop shipping 101 dude
You gotta do some price research before buying..
He blew me off repeatedly and when I eventually snapped and asked point blank about my money, he hits me with
“IT’S NOT MY FAULT YOU WERE BEING IRRESPONSIBLE AND SPENT ALL YOUR MONEY! NOW I’M NOT PAYING YOU SHIT!”
There’s so much more bullshit to this story but I’ll just end it there to avoid an even bigger wall of text.

Man this is horrible. The scam is one thing, but being betrayed by someone he thought he could trust like that must be so crushing.
Damn, I hope he still launches the product and it does well worldwide.

Thank you for bringing more light to this. Caleb is one of the most genuine people on this platform and absolutely did not deserve this.
For those wondering how people in the industry avoid situations like this, this is how buying a machine usually goes:
1. Hire an experienced project engineer in operations.
2. Describe what you want to achieve to the project engineer.
3. Project Engineer creates a detailed document with all the needs of the machine RFQ (Request For Quotation)
4. Project Engineer sends out RFQ to different suppliers or machine builders to get offers in.
5. Offers are evaulated and you pick a supplier to negotiate a contract with
6. Negotiate the contract with the supplier, deliverables, timings, ramp up rate of machine (efficiency at start), payment periods, ...
7. Agree on contract and the supplier start the process of building the machine. Usually at this point you would pay around 30% of total contract price
(Safety, quality, ....)
11. If machine is OK'd for commercial production you sign the Preliminary Acceptance and usually pay another 30%.
12. You start commercial production together with supplier
13. After X weeks/months if the machine is running according to spec (defect rate, run speed, unplanned stops, ...) and there are no open points on the punch list you sign the Final Acceptance and you pay the last 10%
He’s such a good, honest, funny guy. It sucks that someone would do this to him but I’m glad he’s better now and growing stronger.
