As a lawyer, I see people ripped off all the time. There are always warning signs. Never enter into a big contract without first meeting the person face to face, visiting their workplace, speaking with their other clients. If you can’t afford to fly to meet them and visit their workshop/business, you can’t afford to enter into the contract. Definitely look at their previous work and speak to their former client’s, and know what questions you want to ask. If you are getting something built, visit the factory regularly. If you can (and you should be able to), stagger the payments so that you can see the work is getting done as you are paying. Finally, never contract a friend/internet acquaintance who is an up-and-coming professional to do professional work for you. That kind of thing is usually really hard, and inexperienced people generally don’t have the ability to do it. Please learn from this poor guy’s mistake.
Some solid advise. Doing business with family and friends is definitely stressful and can lead to some bad outcomes. But is looks like he's making it work. If you have no experience there is a world of consultants out there. And you can't just entrust the the success of your business on one guy. You said multiple payments in stages is better. After an initial payment, all other payments would require parts lists and labor costs, and a physical inspection to make sure the work is getting done. In my personal experience, the more casual the relationship with a manufacturer, the more chance there is of a project going south. You have to lay out your expectations at the beginning, remain professional, and make sure the work is getting done. I really feel bad that this happened to Oompaville. With someone of Oompa's intelligence, I think he learned a lot, and now has the expertise to take things to the next level. You will find that if you cross train your staff, and somebody gets ill or leaves, the business just keeps moving along. Always be training someone like an Ops Manager to take over your job. If you do that, you can take a vacation from time to time, or attend to family matters without worrying that your business will collapse. Cross training lowers the stress level for everyone.
@@A_Concerned_Citizen again, as a lawyer, who has had hundreds of clients over the decades who have made these mistakes, I can assure you that there are a significant number of adults who don’t know this - including, self evidently, Oompaville. If your going to cry over money than that’s sad. It’s an object. True talent ? It’s called being a normal human being who doesn’t snap in half like a pencil when faced with problems.
@@vincedamato8563 when you work hard and persevere through issues to get that type of money just to have it stolen from you in a scam, it's not sad to cry about it, it's fair. humans can snap when faced with problems, whether small or big, and have that right

Jake's problem is that he asked Will to go to Oompa. This means he has now direct connection to Jake. Will, being a childhood friend of Jake, would have access to Jake's address, probably some conversations, and other important stuff. Him, being friends with the culprit, Jake, is a strong witness in court. If Will doesn't exist, there's no chance that Oompa can get the 1M back since they never met in person, like ever.

I've watched oompa a lot mainly from his part in the podcast with muta, and it seems like his self-deprecating/edgy humour is almost like a defense mechanism that he knows keeps the others on their toes so he consciously doubles down on it so they aren't clear on what's going on in his mind. that's some 4D chess gaming right there. I can't even begin to imagine the stress and anxiety this caused you. As an avid fan for 6 years I've grown a lot as well as you have. My family owns a comic store in Alabama. We've had a similar incident but not nearly as bad as you've had it. One of our properties was being sold out from under us and due to the law we were forced to move within 7 days of just moving into the property that we'd just almost paid off. I wish you the best Caleb and I will continue to watch your content until youtube becomes irrelevant.

That is absolutely disgusting. I can never understand how greed can corrupt a person, to the point where they can sleep at night knowing they have possibly ruined someones life. This fellow Virginian is rooting for you and your family, and hope that Jake gets whats coming to him.
It blows my mind how anyone can call a person that they have never met, a friend. If I am hiring a contractor for that sum of money I am meeting them in person first.
Unfortunately that never happens. In the money he paid for a PI and Lawers hes’s looking at a loss no matter what most likely. And even if homeboy is prosecuted if he has the money hidden well enough, it just disappears.

Jake's problem is that he asked Will to go to Oompa. This means he has now direct connection to Jake.
