- Hello and welcome to Portugal on a shoestring. We are Brian and Diane and in 2023 we bought a 120 year old abandoned property in central Portugal. Join us as we begin a new life, renovating our house and managing our land on a shoestring budget. Watch as we learn new skills, make mistakes and discover our new home.
We welcome any and all questions and suggestions. One thing that we found difficult in our preparations for moving to Portugal was finding our about costs and processes, so we would like to be as open as possible and will try to answer your questions as honestly and openly as possible.
We have opened a buy me a coffee page to accept donations for the dog charity across the road. All proceeds will be forwarded in full to the charity. Thank you for your support ☺️ 🙏

Hi there. I wanted to share some tips with you. I've worked in construction for 40 years, so I can spot the gaps pretty quickly. The mesh tape should be used as you have, at the seams of the straight panels. The paper tape (which you're missing) is essential for the joints between the walls and ceiling panels. Typically, we apply 3 coats of joint compound, spacing them about 60cm apart on panels without beveled edges. In a humid area like the bathroom and kitchen, you're going to run into mold issues with those white panels, trust me. 🤷♂Keep at it!💪
Thank you for your advice 😊
Thanks for the heads up on that paint. Bathroom is looking great.
Thank you 😊
Great work as always. I admire your dedication and skill sets well done 😊😊

I seem to spend half my life in Leroy bloody Merlin, and out house is supposed to be finished, it isn’t a renovation project.
